Bob, I read your post that Malcom Swink was your Grandfather. My mother was married to Jesse Edwin Swink and divorced when I was approx 1 year old. Jesse was the son of Jesse Pinkston Swink who I show was Malcom Swink's brother. My mother put together some geneaology info for me but I know very little about my father. Are you familiar with Jesse or his brother Roger Lee Swink? I only met my father 1 time when I was 13 and have little info about him or the family. I know he died in Sparks, NV in 1985. Any info you have would be helpful.

My 3rd great grandmother was Nancy Caroline Swink of Rowan County, NC who married George William Cox.

The Burke County and its surrounding counties such as Rutherford are a complete different line of Swinks from the Rowan Co. Swink's where Leonard's line lived.

The Joseph "Joe" Swink who married Alpha E. Johnson is buried at Big Springs Baptist Church in Rutherford Co., N.C.

He was b. 15 May 1870 in Burke County and d. 12 Mar 1933 in Rutherford Co., N.C.

Children of Joseph Swink & Alpha E. Johnson were:

1. Ellen J. "Zulie" Swink
2. Oliver Swink
3. William Joe Swink
4. Susan Alpha Swink
5. Dovie E. Swink
6. Sumney Roland Swink
7. Eliza Lee Swink
8. Daisy Etta Swink

I hope this information will help you continue your research on your Swink ancestors. Research takes a lot of time and gets very expensive. I believe you have corresponded with me before about this family.

Hi Robert, I'm new to this site and only just beginning to research my family line. Swink is my maiden name...being born and raised in North Carolina I am quite sure I am related to some if not most of the people posting the messages here.My paternal gg grandfather was a Joseph Swink from Burke County NC and married Alpha Omega Johnson also from Burke County. Oddly enough my maternal gg grandfather was Theodore Cleveland Dale; he married a woman named Elizabeth (Denton) I think. I have been told these families ( Swinks, Johnsons & Dales ) often married cousins making it even more confusing to research.Evoline (possibly Evlin)Johnson was my gg grandmother's mother. Thank you for your reply to my message. I am a SWINK researcher and have been for a number of years. My line of Swinks came from PA. to Rowan Co., NC and then to Burke Co., N.C. Your line of Swinks was through one of the brothers to my oldest ancestor who came to America in 1738 from Germany. I will look to see if I can find an address or telephone number for Dorthy and Lawrence Hunnicutt who have done some research on this family line. I would like to compare research with them.

I know that Jess and Jettie are buried in Shamrock and he was sheriff of wheeler county for a long time--I knew him and Jettie personally. Henry Swink and unknown had a son, Peter Henry Swink (1789-1823)

Peter and Catherine had 2 children:
1. John Henry Swink (c1806-1866)

I am not related to this line, however, I am working with a researcher in SC on a Swink DNA project. We have accumulated a lot of data on various Swink families, including the Arkansas Swink line.

I agree that it sure looks like John H. is descended from Michael Swink (b 1725).

Do you have any info on John H. Swink's (1808-1866) descendants? If there are any living male descendants maybe they would join our project. DNA has proven some things and disproved others.

I am always willing to colaborate with others to get to the truth.

Swinks and Fortners Rowan County

As I read your replies about H. J. Swink and Ruth Estelle Jonas I saw a connection with the Swinks and Fortners.
I have Vira A. Fortner, my great great grandmother who married Richard Obedhiah Atwell in Rowan County, NC. No one know who her parents were. Do these people show up on anyone's tree other than mine? Their daughter Addie Belle Atwell married Caleb Hamiton Cox also of Rowan County. Caleb's grandmother was Nancy Caroline Swink who married George Cox.
Any thing concerning this bunch of Fortners and Swinks would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for additional information on Eli Swink. I am listing all I know.

Eli Swink (1844-1897) married Mary Buff (1824-1896), dtr. of Peter Buff (1801-1886) and Margaret Unknown maiden name (1802-1882).
Eli was the son of David Swink and Nancy Unknown Maiden name.

The last I have found Eli was in the c1886 Petition to Sell Land of the deceased Peter Buff (Father of Mary). Although this Petition list the names of Peter and Margaret's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, I find none of these being children of Eli and Mary Buff Swink.
Did Eli and Mary have any children?

I believe that Eli and Mary Buff Swink are buried at Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery in Cleveland Co., NC, just outside of Casar. This is where Mary's parents are buried.

Swink, Eli April 29, 1844 December 28, 1897
Swink, Mary July 24, 1824 September 23, 1896

I don't have any details other than census info regarding John H. Swink and Amanda J. Davis offspring. There were 3 boys, Leander Davis, Peter Henry and William, and one girl, Delilah A. Of the boys, I only have info on Leander and his wife Emma C. Bogan. Of their boys there is info on William Leander & Lucy ? and Charles D. Swink and Callie Greenfield. William Leander had 2 boys, Joseph (1898 - ) and Jesse Willie (1903 - 1973). Charles D. had 2 boys, Vernon (1898 - 1984) and Earl (12 Oct 1907 - 16 Dec 1992). I have no info on the next generation, so it is unknown if there are any living male descendants.

Since my original post, I have found info supporting my assertion that Peter H. Swink is Louis Matilda Swink's father. I came across an article from the Raleigh, NC Star stating that Maj. P. H. Swink gave his daughter Louisa Matilda in marriage to Peter Pinkston on May 3, 1825. You can look at my tree, the Thomas Pinkston family tree, for the details. Additionaly, there are other trees that have information on this line.

His sister, Mary Ann Swink is my great great grandmother. She married Francis Marion Tanner.

All I have to go on for the two of them is the 1870 census that have them living with John and Mary Harmon.

I think I've already pinged you about this on the Swink DNA project website! This is the first time in 3 years I finally found a lead on them so I'm a bit excited.

I'm glad to hear from a descendant of this family and wished I had heard from you some years ago when I was researching the "SWINK" family in various counties of N.C.

I have Rev. Hazel Justice Swink, s/o Eugene Arthur Swink, b. 16 Oct 1924 in Burke Co., N.C. He died 04 Mar 1995 in Catawba County, N.C. I show him marrying Ruth Estelle "Jones" 08 Jun 1946 in Gaffney, S.C. She was born 06 Nov 1927. Both are buried in Catawba Memorial Park Cemetery in Hickory, N.C.

I'm glad you have given me the correct surname as "Jonas" instead of "Jones". Records I have looked at also show "Jones".

Their gravemarker just gives: H. J. Swink, US Navy, WWII, Oct. 16, 1924 - Mar. 4, 1995; Ruth J. Swink, Beloved Wife & Mother, Nov. 6, 1927 - {Blank}.

I have copies of H. J. Swink's birth certificate, death certificate, marriage license and certificate. All the records show Ruth's surname as "Jones". I guess they misread the handwriting also.

I show them having the following children: (1) Justice Wayne Swink, born 07 Mar {Living} in Cleveland Co., N.C. (2) Nancy Lou Swink, born 20 Dec {Living} in Catawba Co., N.C. (3) Patricia Diane Swink, born 17 Dec {Living} in Catawba Co., N.C.

I was not able to extend the family information on Nancy Lou Swink's family nor Patricia Diane Swink's family.

I do show that Patrician Diane Swink married (1) Amos Bennett Smith in 1971 in Catawba Co., N.C. She married (2) Bobby Calvin Cloninger, Jr. 02 Oct 1973 in Catawba Co., N.C. I have copies of both of these marriage certificates.

Again, I appreciate you and Michael sending messages on this family. Even though I'm signed up to receive all Swink message board messages, the one from Michael escaped me.

Peter Hugh Swink, b.1876-1878, d. 1840; married Nezzie Lee Deese 13 Feb 1898 in Rockingham NC. She was born 1877, d. 1941. I have a list of their children, but you probably have that. Peter Hugh Swink's parents are John Scott Swink (b. 13 Mar 1852 Salisbury,Rowan Co.,NC; d. 25 Mar 1935 Troy, NC; buried at Bethel Methodist Cemetery,Anson Co.,NC) & Mary Elizabeth Helms or Hayden (b. 9 Oct 1844; d. 13 Jun 1889 Anson Co., NC; buried at Bethel Methodist Cemetery,Anson Co.,NC). Peter Hugh Swink > John Scott Swink > Peter Hamilton Swink > Henry H. Swink > Leonard Swink > Michael Swink. Like I said this is not verified, not my branch of this family, but maybe it will give you a place to start looking.

Just to update....cause I see my cousin Michael has decided to chime in here.... :):) I see you brother.... anyway. Some of the info here is not right. My grandmother's name was Ruth Jonas...not Jones....married to Hazel Justice Swink...and yes her did have a son by the name Wayne Swink who we rarely see...and he was married several times. One of those times produced a fabulous son named Michael. :) Still, he had two sisters: My mom, Nancy Lou Swink Fortner and Diane Swink (can't remember my aunt's middle name...oops) and she married to a Cloninger for a long time, but still goes by Diane Swink sometimes.
