It is unlikely that you will find the information that you are looking for here, because this board pertains to people who have the surname "Swiss", not those who have anything to do with Switzerland. There are other boards that deal with people who have their origins in Switzerland. Good luck with your search.

Mary Asche Hartman

Looking for information on my great great grandmother above. We believe she left Basel about 1877 and made her way to New Jersey to join her husband John Hartman at the Sayre and Fisher Brick Co., Sayreville NJ. She traveled with her 3 small children, Frank age 5, Bertha age 2 and Elizabeth 1. If you have any information that would help us find her place of birth in Switzerland, please advise. With thanks, Robin.

Welcome SWISS Researchers

Hello Swiss family reseachers,

My name is Bob Warwick and I am the Board Administrator of the Swiss Surname board. Researching the surname "Swiss" can be a problem because of the confusion of those people are searching for the surnames of people who come from Switzerland. This board, however, only pertains to people with the last name of "Swiss". I have spent many years searching for the decendents and ancesters of John J. Swiss, born around 1828, and who settled in the area of Kearny, New Jersey after immigrating from France around 1850.

All messsages pertaining to the surname "Swiss" are welcome on this board. Many "Swiss" families had their origins in countries whose language resulted in names that were difficult to pronounce in English. These surnames were shorted to "Swiss" for convenience. I believe that my "Swiss" connection comes from an ancester who lived on the French/Swiss border, moving to France after marriage.

On with the hunt!

Bob Warwick
