Hi Renee,

I have just come across some some digital records that support your story. I was wondering where you got your information about our great grandmother marrying twice. My info comes from an interview conducted by the Bishop Museum. Any info you have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Marily Sylva

Re: Mary Mendonca married to a Sylva 1st from Hawaii

This is not entirely correct. Mary Anehe Sylva was married only once. She and Joseph P Mendonca had five children: Joseph Sylva, Francis Kaaha Sylva, Edward Sylva, Rose Sylva and Alyce Sylva Ackerman. Francis was my grandfather. When he and my grandmother, Martha Cochrane were to be married, Martha's parents insisted that Joseph and Mary marry. Until then, they were unmarried. My great-grandmother, Mary, we called her "Tutu" was 91 when she died. I was 21. She was from Haleiwa, and we believe she was "hanai'd" - adopted - by the Sylva family, therein taking their name. Her children were all named Sylva because they were all born prior to her marrying Joseph P. Mendonca. My grandfather, Francis, was 96 when he died and he was mentally and physically in very good shape until the night he suddenly fell and died. He was a dental surgeon, a territorial senator, head of the local CAA and finally head of the Mendonca (family) estate. Joseph P. Mendonca was from the Azores. He "jumped ship" in Honolulu and became a very successful local businessman and landowner. He was married to a Hawaiian whose last name was Helenii, or Helanii - not sure of the spelling. There is a building in downtown Honolulu on Hotel Street with his name on it. And he owned a large part of Chinatown. I have never heard that he fought to get rid of the monarchy, and that is very likely untrue. The reason I say that is that Tutu was a friend of the queen, and a "member of her court". When the queen was locked in Iolani Palace, during the takeover of the monarchy, my great-grandmother, Tutu, and her very dear friend, Jenny Wilson, visited her, bringing her flowers wrapped up in newspapers. (They were actually sneaking in the newspapers so she could read the news of the day - as she was prohibited from receiving the daily news.) I knew Aunt Jenny well, along with many of Tutu's friends, including Lurline Roth, who was from the Matson line family. One of the Matson ships was named after her.
I hope whoever you are, Renee, that you will get in touch with me. My cousin, Marily Sylva and I have been working on our heritage for a couple of years. jswaloha@yahoo.com

Hi there pseats,

My name is Marily Sylva Badger. What is your name, how old are you and where do you live now. Were you born in Hawaii like I was? Which one of my great Uncle Joe's daughters was your mom? I am in touch with Denise Storm and her grandfather was Henry Puaena Sylva. Your grandfather died at a very young age and any information and photos that you have would be more than greatly appreciated. Thy uncles would not let your mothers cousins do any research because the were not only born out of wedlock, but they were living in an era when being Hawaiian was not cool and could prohibit your success and stature in society. So, you would have been 5 in 1964 when we buried Tutu and I was 7. When you guys stopped on the way out to the country houses (in Mokuleia)at that store to see tut's brother, I am told that she was related to two different families. One of them was the Helenii's and the other would have been the Kaho'owela's. Do either of these names ring a bell and do you have access to any photo's at all. Also is your mom and or your dad still alive? Any birth dates etc, attached to all of your names will help me completer your side of the family. My email address is surfergirl@nyms.net and I hope you contact me soon. It sounds like you've already seen the website. It's so fascinating to put this all together and to connect with our long lost relatives like yourself. Hope to hear from you soon.

Aloha,

Marily

I have not posted on this site for years. It sounds like there are quite a number of great grandchildren of Mary A. and Joseph P. Mendonca. My grandfather was Joseph who was the oldest son of Mary and Joseph. I have 3 aunts and I believe counting my brothers and first cousins there are 11 great grandchildren from that branch of the family. I enjoyed the pictures you posted. My mom has the picture of "Big Tutu", Mary A, on her dresser. I saw Uncle Ed and Aunt Rose a couple of times growing up. I think I met Uncle Francis but that would have been when I was 5 and when we came to "Big Tutu's" funeral. I remember going to her house on Judd Hillside. My mother told me that 2 of her cousins tried to do research into the family history when they were younger but the uncles would not let them. My mom said they would go to the country and they would stop at a store on the way and see "Big Tutu's" brother. Mom thought he might be a full Hawaiian from his features. I don't think mom knows much about Joseph P.'s side of the family. Mom said Joseph P.acquired a lot of land but had to sell much of it to raise money to help rebuild China Town after it was burned. Let me know what you find on the family history.

Researching Info on Grandmother

My name is Charles C. Rhames II (Buddy). Over the last several years I have been looking for info on my family history. I have had little sucess and I am becoming hopeless with my efforts. My grandmother, Marion S Mervin, last married name, born 22 Jan 1913, seems to be a huge key in finding out more. I don't know if she is still alive due to the fact my Aunt won't allow any contact with her. The info I have is little but hopefully it can be helpful. She was married three times, second to a Laughlin; had one child with first marriage, nine with second and one with third, my Grandfather, Emzy Oren Mervin, born 30 Mar 1924, pasted away 22 Sept 1990 in Florida. I'm not sure if her maiden name was Sylva, Silva or whatever. I can't remember, but it sounds right. Any help from anyone would be extremely appreciated. My son will thank you one day also. This is all for him, so he won't grow up like me not knowing all of his family background or history. Thank you again.

Greetings,
My full name is Erica Dee Borges-Sylva Waldmann. My mother was married to John for a short while during 1945-46. She left him and to my knowledge never had any other contact. The only reason I would like information is for genealogical purposes. I have their marriage license and several bits of correspondence from that time. It has been very rewarding to find that he was successful and happy. My mother passed away in 1981 and I have been looking with just tidbits of information. I hope that you understand I only want information that you feel comfortable sharing. Thank you so much for the response. My private e-mail is eandewaldmann@aol.com.
Yours truly,
Erica
Assuming we are talking about the same person, I have a little information- not much, as Grandma was rather old when I got interested, and was a bit forgetful, and altho I spent time with Uncle Johnny and Donnette during the holidays while I was at University, we didn't talk about the early days. I gather that he had settled down quite a bit in his mature years.
I do know that he had two sons that grew up with his first wife's family.
I think first tho that I need to ask what your own interest is. Also, do you want direct email contact or do you want to continue on a public board? I also have access to Skype & Skype-out, should you want to chat.
Cheers
Linda Macdonald

He and his wife Donnette retired to Fresno after living in San Francisco.
John died about 15 years ago, I think, and Donette a few years later.
They did come once to visit us in New Zealand.

Greetings Renee;
Mendonca's candies was founded in 1946 near the old airport off of the Nimitz on Oahu. It was called Mendonca's Candies Ltd. Mendonca's Candies made the Macadamia nut chocolates and coconut candies along with frozen coconut milk.etc. If you go onto the internet, you can find it. The candy factory was sold in 1986 if my memory serves me right. The name is still used and I believe a Japanese company bought it. My uncle John passed away then his wife Chrisitne in 2001.
I was born and Raised on the island of Oahu.
My wife and I live in San Martin Ca, just about twenty minutes south of San Jose.
The builing with the Mendonca name on it (on Oahu), is no relation to us as far as I know. I remember when I was a child, I asked my parents about that building with our name on it, and they said it was not from our family.
Blessings; Mike Mendonca

How are you related to Joseph Perry Mendonca? I have always been told that Mary A. Sylva was the daughter of a Hawaiian and a British sea captain whose last name was Sylva. To my knowledge she was only married once. Her kids kept her maiden name. She and Joseph also had 2 daughters, Rose and Alyce. Joseph was married twice the second time to Mary A.

I would be interested in what your research has found.

Mary Mendonca married to a Sylva 1st from Hawaii

It appears that Mary Anehe Mendonca was married the second time to a Mendonca relative of mine,Joseph Mendonca. She was a member of the "well Known" kamaaina family and the Daughters of Hawaii, as per her obit. Is there still a Daughters of Hawaii group?
Her children included Edward Sylva the former territorial Attorney General, Dr Francis K Sylva, former territorial senator and Joseph L Sylva, a former territorial senator.
She was 92 when she died. I also understand that Joseph Mendonca was at least a somewhat powerful businessman. He was suppose to have been a labor union rep who fought for Portugese and Chinese worker's rights. He also owned some buildings in Chinatown(Honolulu) and was part of a group that fought to get rid of the monarchy and "fought" for Hawaii to become a republic. I thought he might be in some local history books , but I do not know where to start on that! Anyonw have any advise? I would appreciate any help with any of this.
Thanks,
Renee

Basil Sylva(parents from Montreal, PQ

Does anyone have any information on a sylva family from Montreal, Quebec in the mid 1800's? Basil Sylva married my 2x gr. grandmother Elizabeth (Betsey) Holden, nee Egan in 1853 at Chapeau, Que. The Church record stated his parents, (names illegible), were from Montreal. The couple must have left the Chapeau area because Elizabeth disappears from the census records there. She reappears for the 1881 census, using the Holden name again, & is a widow. She remains in the Chapeau, PQ area until her death c1908. What i'd really like to find out is where they went in this time frame & if she had her youngest son Patrick Holden bn c1851, with her. Any help appreciated.
Gloria

Sylva in Mobile Alabama

Looking for Mary Ann Sylva that married
Jacob Eckstein in Mobile Alabama. Census states that she was from Ireland. Do not believe Sylva to be an Irish name, though she could have been born there...or perhaps living there when she came to U.S. Husband Jacob Eckstein was from Germany if that helps. Thanks if you have any info. Joyce
