Sylvester family of Windham County, Vermont

I'm a ggg granddaughter of John F. A. and Laurana (Johnson or Hanson) Sylvester. John was originally from Canada and Laurana from Vermont. They had 7 children, Lester was my gg grandfather. Walter was another son, whom I believed died in the Brattleboro Vermont area in 1969 at the age of abt 101. I'm trying to locate any information that I can on them, and would love to find out which cemetery they are buried in so that I can then plan a trip there from Ohio. Lester married and lived in Cleveland Ohio area from abt 1884 to the time of his death around 1904. If anyone has any information on this family I would greatly appreciate any help that could be given. Thank you.

My Mom's name was Marjorie Frances Sylvester. She graduated Bourne High School, Bourne Massachusetts in 1954

The meaning of the name Sylvester is "From The Forest"

The origin of the name Sylvester is English

I didn't know a lot about Mom's past or ancestry. I was curious to know more especially if she had any Jewish Hebrew ancestry.

Hi again.
Thanks for replying. I will perhaps get a book out of the library and see if I can find anything about the Sylvesters. Looking at the censuses (censi????) they seem to have members of the family involved in different aspects of lace making. They seem to be based in Nottingham at present probably on a small scale but different generations following the same path.
Thanks again
Melanie

Re: Sylvester Lace industry Nottingham

hi Melanie,

I'm replying because I do most of the research, but my wife is registered with ancestry.co.uk

Lace making and weaving were very big industries in the 1800s in Nottingham and the Midlands. The Sylvester(Silvester) name comes up fairly readily, but establishing the relationship between the various branches of the family is proving more difficult. For example, there was a lace-making company 'Bridget and Sylvester', and I am aware that my GGGrandfather employed a significant number of workers, but there is no evidence of a link yet.

My branch of the Sylvesters moved to Nottingham from the Leicester area probably between 1826 and 1846. The name is more common on the Continent, and a significant number of French or Low Countries workers moved to Britain in the mid 1700s because of the increased demand for skilled workers in the industry.

I'll keep an eye open for your relatives. Is there anyone in particular who may be in the Leicester parish records who you would like me to look for?

Bill

From the obituary of Charles M. Sylvester, of Denton, MD.?
I believe that she may have been Carrie Pippin, born1872, died after 1935
What was her husband’s name?

More details on the other members of this family, listed above:
Miss Mary Pippin, unmarried, 1874-1948
Miss Josephine Pippin, unmarried, 1862-1947
Mrs. Effa Patchett, of Atlantic City, N.J; (1866-1947, she married Robert Harry Patchett)
James H.

Hi
I have some relatives in the lace industry. William Sylvester (born about 1818), Thomas Sylvester (born about 1846) and Alfred Sylvester (born 1884). Alfred was my Great Grandfather. I don't really know anything about the lace industry yet or if what they did was unusual or if it was commonplace in Nottingham. I know that Alfred and Annie with their children Ivy and Leonard went to Germany before the First World War (something to do with lacemaking) so presume that is why they are not on the 1911 website.

I think I might have "found" Eli, Almira and Anson Harvey Sylvester's parents along with a "new" brother(=Bartlett N. SYLVESTER, b. FEB 1822, Dutchess Co.) It all seems to fit. Go to rootsweb.com world tree and search for Nehemiah SYLVESTER, b. 27 Feb 1792 (prob. born in MA), m. to Palmedia MURDOCK (prob. born in NY, abt 1798) and died March 25,1839 (less than 3 months after Anson's birth, if 1839 is correct). Palmedia looks to have siblings: Daniel MURDOCK and Eli Harvey MURDOCK(lived in Cayuga Co.). Nehemiah's dad (also Nehemiah, b.1746) looks to be the brother of the Nathaniel in your query (Nehemiah Sr's wife, Hannah, might also be a BARTLETT). Residences of Nehemiah(b.1792) and Palmedia include Saratoga Co. Palmedia's dad, Eli MURDOCK (Sr.) was also in Dutchess Co. around the time that your Eli SYLVESTER was born there. What do you think?

I'm looking for information on Camille and Helen (Ellen?)Sylvester of Derry, PA and their descendants. The 1930 census information that I have shows that they had 8 children, Lewis, Diagina (Jean), Mary (my grandmother), Ardwin, Edna, Arthur, Louise, and Diana. They did not appear on any other earlier census which is odd. I have very little information on Camille except that he died circa 1934 in an accident, and I know even less about Helen (Ellen?). The son Arthur died in WWII at the age of 22 in 1944, and he was married to Perrine Maggorie. I would also like to know where in Italy that Camille and Helen immigrated from. Their youngest child, Diana, had at least one child, Sue Ellen Schmitt, born in 1954. I would like to get in touch with anyone who is a descendant of their children, so we can share family ancestry. Any one with information on these Sylvesters, I would greatly appreciate it if you email me at dutashark@yahoo.com.

William and Lucy B Sylvester Church had 4 children according to the 1910 History of Hanover, Lucy W. born 21 Nov. 1824, William born 15 Oct. 1827, Eliza M. born Feb. 1835 & Hannah S. born Nov. 1837. I see the Church line was descended through Richard born 1608 who had a son Col. Benjamin with a son Thomas in the intro to CHURCH.

There is George, Karen, Jean(me) and Richard. George lives in Greenville, Karen lives in Lansing, I live in Mackinaw City and Richard lives in Taylor. All in Michigan. I really didn't know that my dad had any sisters or a brother. I found out about maybe 5 out 10 years ago. I asked my dad about his side of the family because I didn't know my aunts or uncle or grandparents. I wanted to learn more about them. I would like to stay in contact with you.

Yes, we are on the same page(s), David, re Dr. Albie Warren Sylvester's interpretation of "The Sylvesters Or Silvesters And Their Name." And you are correct, he had Calvin's d.o.d as 1813. Another descendant had given me 1847, and having been warned that Dr. Albie's work was full of errors, questioned the discrepancy.

By the way, notice one of your web pages says "Mary or Sarah Sylvester" married Timothy Hall (b. 1714). Both sisters married and had children by Timothy Hall. It was sister Sarah's daughter by Hall (Mary Hall, b. 1754) who in 1771 married her third cousin, Edmund Sylvester (b. 1751), the father or your Calvin.

With thanks for your reply and best holiday wishes to you and yours from the Outer Banks of North Carolina,

Tony Sylvester

Re: Retracing my steps: Sylvester - Barden connection

The late Dr. Abbie Warren Sylvester, in his genealogical papers, said Calvin died at Etna in October of 1847 (rather than 1813 as you have it) "leaving four small children in rather destitute circumstances." He identified three of them as Daniel, b. 11 Jan 1811; Sewell, b. 4 Jan 1812; and Lovina, b. 9 Jan 1813 and d. 26 May 1830. AWS did not identify the fourth child, which I gather from your list was a girl. The 1847 death date raises questions about the 'four small children' assertion but I also wonder whether 1813 is correct. Any comment, additions or corrections?

He would know the most about my grandmother. Probably even has pictures. Do you know how to contact him? My dad and his sister Fran have been asking me to try and find one.
Hi TonyS42,

Thanks for your note about Calvin Sylvester.

I haven't seen Dr. Sylvester's "genealogical papers" per se but I do have an expanded copy of his booklet entitled "The Sylvesters Or Silvesters And Their Name". Are we talking about the same thing? (By "expanded" I mean that my grandmother Evangeline Sylvester (nee Washburn) added later generations).

In Dr. Sylvester's booklet (by the way the spelling of his name was Albie Warren Sylvester) he gives 1813 as Calvin's date of death.

On page 4 he states:

"Calvin (6) Born in Chesterfield, Mass. Nov.1, 1782, Went to Etna, Maine in 1808. Perhaps with Asa (6). Married ... Died in 1813, leaving four small children in rather destitute circumstances. His widow afterwards married John Dunton of Hampden, Maine."

On page 9 in addition to the information on Daniel and Sewell he states:

"3 and 4 Daughters of Calvin. No record found."

Maybe you have some information that I don't have. I would like to know the source of Dr. Sylvester's "genealogical papers" if you wouldn't mind sharing.

Regards,

David
