Hi Glyn,
I have discovered that the Benthall branch probably go back to Sussex in the 1380/1400 period and in the C16th were using the same Taylor alias there as in Shropshire.

Peter

Peter
Is it not equally likely that the place in this case originated from the surname? I have only just discovered that there is a Syners Hill and a Synershill Pit - but knowing from parish records that the family lived in Benthall from the time parish records started - if the Siner family go back through hundreds of years in Benthall / Broseley and had a well established trade as travelling tailors, could the hill not have taken its name from the family who resided on or near it?

I have several theories for the name -
1 It's from the old english 'synar' meaning an archer who missed the mark regularly (also where 'sin' comes from)
2 It's a midlands dialect form of Senior
3 It's a corruption of 'siveriner' = dweller on the Siverin / Severn: the only correlating evidence backing this up is the town of Sinnington which derives from 'siverin - inga - ton'

To answer my own question it seems the Synar name in my case came from a geographical location near Broseley. There was a Syners Hill and Synershill Pit. It was not uncommon in the 1500's for the surname to derive from a village or other physical place apparently.

Hi again,
I am now back to the 1530s in Shropshire and have looked into other Syners throughout England and Scotland and it is evident that even in the C16th the Syners were very scattered. As an origin there is also "seiner" as in someone who seine fishes. The earliest reference I have found is a C13th trader Clement de Sinor suggesting that Sinor may be a place name.

Peter

Have your tried checking census 10 yrs before and 10 yrs after ....could be a misspelling...sometimes that happned and the families thinking this make it their legal named continued useing the "government" spelling.

I have read that you are looking into the history of the syner family. My mother was Florence Syner born in Birmingham in 1916 ,she had a brother called Bill, also brothers George ,Jack and Fred and sisters Mary ,Sally and Frances, her parents were John Edwin Syner and Edith Mary nee Corbett . If these names are familiar to you it is possible that we are related ,I think that your father and my mother were brother and sister

Syner - America/Britain connection

Hi. I'm researching the Syner branch of my mother's family history. Her grandmother was Florence Syner (b.1916 in England), and her Great-Grandfather was John Edwin Syner (b. 1871). Florence Syner (now deceased) always said that her great-grandfather came aross from America and i'm trying to investigate this possiblity. He would have been born between 1800 and 1820 i believe.

Does anyone have any information about a possible link between Syner's in England and Syner's in America?

I have a lot more info. available if anyone would like to know more.

Samantha
sam@paterson84.freeserve.co.uk
