Stephen Sysak, son of Andreas and Justina Sysak, was born in Dickson City, Pennsylvania on January 9, 1917 and died October 4, 2003, at age 86, at the Veteran Administration Hospital in La Jolla. He spent 17-1/2 years in the U.S. Navy, was a Pearl Harbor survivor and also served in Korea. He was an officer with Teamsters Local #542 and a lifetime member of numerous Democratic committees. He was an avid baseball and football fan. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Blanche Sysak, and five stepchildren, Jane Halshaw-Avery, Wendy Stafford, Sharon Halshaw-Prowell, Robert Halshaw and Donna Halshaw, nine granddaughters and two great-grandsons. Memorial services will be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery on November 10, 2003 at 11 a.m. According to his wishes, his ashes will be brought to Pearl Harbor. In lieu of flowers, it is the family ' s request that donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans (Department of California), Retinitis Pigmentosa International (RPI) or a charity of choice.
