Margrate Tattersall to John Hammer

I found this great letter in the archives today and wanted to share it:

Envelope addressed to: Mr John Hamer
Oshkosh, Winnebago County, Wisconsin Territory
North America

Burnley [Lancashire, England] August 1st 1853

My dear children,

I hope this letter will find you all well and better composed in mind than I am at present. I have to inform that your father has not been well for some length of time, but on the 7th of July the day after he had reached his 57th year, he took his bed being very poorly indeed, so much so that your brother Henry scarcely left him either night or day, till the day of his Death which took place Tuesday the 26th of July about half past 4 o’clock in the afternoon. But my dear child I am happy today that so great was the change wrought in him by the power of grace divine that the Stern Lion truly became a Patient Lamb and he left such a testimony behind him that we have no doubt but what he his now happy in Heaven and that you know will be forever. He was interred at Pigs Lee Church on Friday the 29th of July. Your Uncle John Hall from Bury [Lancashire] came to Burnley to the funeral and your Aunt Sarah and Uncle George from Oldham also came to the funeral and brought with them your 2 cousins James and Alice. Your Aunt Mary and Uncle Edmond met us at the [illegible] Bank the following went from Burnley home by your uncle Henry and wife and your Uncle Archibald and wife and your Uncle Lindly and wife, our number being so great I was obliged to engage 4 cars to convey us to Pigs Lee. But my children it would have consoled my mind a little in the midst of my grief had you [Mary Ann Tattersall Hamer] and John [Hamer] had been in our number. But the time has not yet come for me to see your face, but I still live in hope. Being so far I had to engage 2 horses with the hearse. With this letter you will receive a few verses which I have got printed for the occasion.

I must now give you some account of sister Alice Crook. On the 21st of June last, about 4 o’clock in the evening, she was taken very suddenly ill. The cause was a miscarriage in labor and her life for some time was despaired of. We had to wake with her in the night for a long time. The doctor at length ordered them to quit the place where she was living and having no home ready, your father immediately gave consent on his sick bed that she and her husband [and] children should come and live with us. They are doing so at present and such was the state of your sister at the time of his death she was not able to go up stairs to see him so I leave you to judge what kind of a house we have had lately for sickness. But I am happy to say that Alice is much better at present and in a nice way for recovery. So you see in the midst of all my troubles I have blessings intermixed for which I am thankful. With regard to the rest of our family we are all as well as we can expect. My paper you see is getting full. I cannot say much more at present, but I would just say that I have received 200 pounds and have some more yet to draw. I will [give] you more particulars when I write next time. If you have not wrote, do so immediately. Till then I remain your affectionate mother.

Margrate Tattersall
family connections

I am looking for my family blood line because I am doing my Family tree report in school and I can only trace my blood line back to my grandparents so I am searching for other Ta's or former Ta's (maiden names). I would appreciate any information on anyone with this last name or was their last name.
I am Vietnamese and we do not keep many genealogical records (family trees)so I don't have much info on who I am a descendant of. If you have any information please E-mail my dad's adress (tatrung@msn.com) and write Ta or Viet on it so my dad won't delete it. Thank you very much.
