Great suggestion! I really appreciate it. I haven't tried those boards (I'm actually just a couple of days new to this whole thing) but I will. Ordering the birth certificate should'nt be too hard. I hope they will have listed the father. Under the circumstances, they might not. We'll see.

Thanks again!

The Social Security death index has Herman Tadlock b. Dec 16 1895, died Jan 15 1971 Loudon county TN. Find a grave.com shows him buried at Oak Hill Baptist Church cemetery Washington Co. TN. You likely have the census data, one showing him as Elbert H. Tadlock age 14 in 1910, nephew to Samuel Tadlock.

I think you may need to invest in some records to answer your questions. You can send for his Social Security application which should show his parents' names, if he knew them. Also a marriage record can be requested from the Washington county TN county clerks office. It looks like Herman married about 1916. You could also request a copy of his birth certificate. Be sure to give his full name of Herman Elbert Tadlock and let them know the first name and middle name could be reversed.

Have you posted your message on the Washington county TN message board?

Herman (1895) and Mary (1895) were my great grandparents. I know some of Herman's history. I do not know Mary's. They had several children named Clarence 1917, Addie - 1930, Pauline - 1923, Nana - 1925 (aka Wanda/Lewana),and Fred. Fred was 2 1/2 years younger than Nana and was killed when he was about 11 years old. If anyone has any information about Mary in particular, I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, Herman was conceived under dark circumstances (assault?). I know his mother is Mary Jane Tadlock, daughter of Samuel K. Tadlock. She married a Smith. If anyone knows who Herman's biological father is, that would be wonderful too.

Thanks so much.

After I wrote the other reply, I realized that I did have the data for your family in my file.

I show that John Lewis was the child of Lewis and Charlotte Padfiled, not his second wife Jane Blair.

As such, I currently show that John married a Ruth Baxter and had the following children: Susannah, Margaret, Lewis Alexander, Barnett Boone, Sevier, John Hobby, and James K. Polk.

Lewis Alexander married a Deborah Maltsberger and had a number of children, to include Lewis Alexander II (1850 census in TN, 1860 in IN, and 1870 in MO).

I show that Lewis Alexander II married Mary Catherine Maltsberger (the families were found next to each other in several census reports) and had 6 children, to include your Elbert ... but who I had been up to today shown as Nelson.

I would still like to compare notes and possibly offer what I can from my files.

Yours appears to be a branch, or part of the line that I do not have recorded.

My files indicate that John Tadlock (son of Lewis) was married three times. The first wife being Mary "Polly" Horton, with nine children (Margaret, Sarah, Thomas, William Jack, Lewis, Nancy, Lucy, Martha, Rebecca, and Elizabeth. The second wife being Hester Clark, with one child (Tennessee), and the third wife being Susannah Garland, with no children.

Of the children, I only have a descendant listing for William Jack (who used Tedlock) and Nancy, who married Joseph Fraker. William Jack's children were John, Lewis, Peart, and Elizabeth. I have a brief account of John and Peart's civil war history (they enlisted in both sides during the war).

I have been doing the Tadlock line for a number of years now (actually my wife's line) and can provide possibly a good deal of data to your records. Further, I would like to add your information to my data fields ... in order to have a more complete record for the next Tadlock researcher down the road.

Please contact me at okienarc@yahoo.com. We can share data and discuss theories where information is lacking.

Hi June,
I am doing research on my husband's family of Tadlocks. It is my understanding that most Tadlocks were from England, however I just read a note that said some were from Ireland. My family of Tadlocks came from England--Edward Tatlocke was the 1st to come to this country. He settled in N. Carolina.
My husbands family migrated to Iowa in 1850 settling in Moravia, which was on the Mormon trail.
Carol Tadlock

Re: Jeremiah Tadlock, Crawford Co., Indiana

Hi Amy

That would be my Jeremiah. According to the 1850 and 1860 census records, my Jeremiah was born in 1797. In the 1820 Crawford Co. census, he is listed next to James Suddarth, who I believe is Sarah (Suddarth) Tadlock’s brother. I would like to find Sarah’s parents as well. I have traced James back to Casey Co., KY through his application for bounty land due to service in the War of 1812. When looking through the tax lists for Casey Co., I then found an Elisha Tadlock on the 1810 tax list. That is why I thought that Elisha could be Jeremiah's father.

If you have not checked for a bounty land application file for Alexander, I would recommend it. In the file for my James, the application outlined where and when he enlisted in the KY militia and described his service.

I have just started researching the Tadlock line, so I do not have too much just yet. I would be very interested in whatever you have. I would like to put together the Tadlock line and would very much like to share information that I find.
Re: what dose tadlock mean

I'm sure this is a little to little, a little too late. The surname Tadlock is a toponymic name. This means it's derived from a place, probably where the original bearers of the name lived. Tadlock as it's spelled in our case, was further changed from it's original spelling Tatlocke. The original bearers of this name (alledgedly)were from Tatas Lock, or modern day Chester England. However, having spent 5 yrs. in England,I found nothing to substantiate any relationship between Chester and Tatas Locke. So the most credible meaning I've found is, someone who lives or works by the lake: Lock Dweller; Lock Keeper
Hello-

My name is Jennifer Johnson. Mittie was my Great mother, and Tula is my grandmother. I would love to have a copy of the family tree in her bible. I have memories of her reading it to me as a child, and telling old family stories when she lived with my grandmother. I have been trying research our family tree, I am so glad that a family member has our beloved Granny's Bible, I has afraid it was lost. Thank you.

Jennifer
