Louisa TAFF / TAFT b. 1846 eastern NC

We are wondering if the Louisa TAFT who married Miles BLOUNT 18 March 1866, and who was born 17 March 1846, could be the Louisa TAFF found in the 1850 Tyrrell Co. Census, dau. of George W. TAFF (b. abt 1819) and Affa M. SAWYER?, b. abt 1828.

Our great grandmother Louisa Taft BLOUNT lived in St. George, SC. She has many, many great grandchildren, mainly in SC. Does anyone know more about the TAFF/TAFT family around those dates? This is the only Louisa from NC that I can find who might be our ancestor. Miles BLOUNT was from Lee's Mills/Plymouth. He served in the Confederate Army and Navy. I've been looking for Louisa for ages. Thanks for your help!

Hi Beth:
Thanks for the reply. Do you know where they were married? I see on the 1881 census that Mary Jane was from Illinois and the first 4 children: George, Kate, William and Nellie Meehan were born in Ohio. Then on 1900 the other children: James, John, Bessie, Frank, Charley are listed as born WI. There is also an adopted daughter Lennie Grace.

I was hoping to see if this is indeed the James Meehan I am searching for. My Meehan family has James with a brother George T(homas) and James mother is Bessie Magee. The father is Patrick Meehan. They were living in Belleville, Ontario, Canada in 1863 when James went to join the US army.

Jerri

Jerri,
I don't have much information for James Meehan. I have him marrying Mary Jane (Jenny) Taff in about 1874. They had 9 children whose names I have as George, Fred Charles, Charles, James, John, Frank, Kate, Bessie, and the ninth I have listed as only female. I have James Meehan's death as February of 1921. I don't have any other information beyond that.
Beth

They lived in Marinette WI on 1881 Census.

According to a family story James MEEHAN left Canada abt 1863 to join US Army, he was woounded, stayed in USA in WI and had 9 children - all red-heads.

Does this sound familiar?

Jerri

Myrtle Lawmaster was my great grandmother also, she was married to Chester Lawrence Taff before Will Lawmaster, she had a son named Luther Lawrence Taff,(my grandfather) and I think she had a daughter named Margie Taff and one other that I don't know about. She had 4 other sons, Danny,Melvin,JD & Leroy, who are all now deceased. I would be interested in contacting anyone of these family members so that I might learn more about that side. Any information would be greatly appreciated, Thanks, Ramona

Re: sarah taff

In summary, no, I don't have good evidence, just coincidence.
The conflict in our data is your Abraham married Lucinda Mize in 1831. The Abraham I have is also the brother of Samuel Taff who married Eliza Giltner (she'd be my gg?? Aunt). And, there is a marriage record of Sarah Giltner marrying Isaac Taff (brother of Abraham). I haven't linked it yet, but I believe this Sarah Giltner is the sister of Eliza and she married a Taff. In 1852, when her father died she was single and living on the family farm. Did she marry Isaac Taff after 1852? I don't have proof, so I should not have said that in my email.
As far as Abraham, I don't know where I got the Sallie Giltner marriage, but it came from somewhere (duh). I mean I wouldn't have recorded it as "Sallie" without that being in the record. I think I must have gotten it from Clark county records, but I probably speculated it as this Abraham Taff (there was another one, who served inthe civil war in Illinois).
So, the only thing I know with certainty is the ELiza Giltner and Samuel Taff as they are listed in ELiza's father's will. Unfortunately, this family scattered after the father's death in 1852 so it's hard to trace them all. Her sister Christena Giltner married John Payne and her brother James married Henrietta Rommel, and her brother Jacob K married a Sarah and her brother Andrew Jackson (mine) married Mary Jane Baird and they moved to Missouri.
Sorry to ramble, but this is a tough family (giltner and taff in Clark county) to trace. I have land records I'm going through now, but haven't gotten much done yet.
Will try to let you know how it comes out.
Phil
Thanks for your response. I had to go back and see what my original query was! I've advanced my knowledge of Lucinda (Mize) and Abraham Taff quite a lot since then, but I haven't worked on this family in an age, so don't have everything I know about them clear in my brain at the moment.

But I have a question: Do you have good evidence that Abraham, son of Samuel and Sarah (Snow) Taff, married Sallie Giltner? I have Sarah Giltner married to Isaac Taff, 12 Aug 1839, Clark Co IN, based on transcribed (not original) marriage records, but listed in two different sources. I have Isaac as my Abraham's brother, both sons of Samuel and Sarah (Snow) My Abraham was born 7 Jul 1811 in Indiana, presumably Clark Co if I have his parents right; died 1 Aug 1835, Boone Co IN; m. Lucinda Mize 11 Aug 1831, Fountain Co IN (at age 20, so he didn't have much time for two marriages; this marriage from the original record). I can't, at the moment, tell you exactly why I decided that my Abraham was the son of Samuel and Sarah (Snow), had a computer crash and haven't yet re-entered everything, but if you have evidence that contradicts that, I would certainly like to know about it.

I have James Taffe (m. Elizabeth Reed) d. 13 Jun 1832, Indianapolis, Marion Co IN, from published sources, but they look convincing. Let me know if you're interested in them.

I have an Abraham Taff as the son of Samuel Taff b:1794 in KY and Sarah Snow also b:1794 KY. I have him as the son of James Taff and Elizabeth Reed (both out of VA, but I got this from others. Need to check 1821 deaths in KY for James' probate)
Sarah Snow's father was Prince Snow, but I don't know much about them.
This Abraham Taff married a Sallie Giltner, but even though I have a lot of Giltner kin in the area, I don't know where she came from - and she could be a widow...
I just looked at the 1850 census of Joseph Fall and Lucinda Mize, who first married Abraham Taff in 1831. The last person in the census is Sarah Fall 17, who I assumed was Lucinda's daughter from her marriage to Abraham Taff. I thought I'd check here to see if anyone had more info. There evidently were no other children, at least none that lived to 1850. Who are Abraham Taff's parents? I'm looking for the Abraham that is the son of Sarah Snow and James Taff.
I know a little bit about Sarah Taff/Giltner from some discussions I had with her Granddaughter (from another marriage to a Mr. Balleweg)back in the late 1980's. I am the great, great, great grandson of Sarah and Issac Taff. I know bits and pieces about her, but would like to compare notes with what I have and what you have. I'll have to get back to my geneology program to review my notes. I also have a photo of her.

Very interesting how these families interacted.
John Payne (son of John Payne b 1772) married Christiana Giltner.
Her sister, Eliza Giltner married Samuel Taff (son of Samuel Taff and Sarah Snow).
Their brother, Andrew Jackson Giltner and along with some Stoner, Giltner, Allhands, and a few other families from Clark and Jefferson county went on to Andrew and Nodaway counties in Missouri, I think in the 1850s.

The Giltner's in this case are children of Andrew Giltner and Susannah Kistler.

Hi. There's not much info about his birth, but it's still interesting. I want to look up the location of Laughry Creek sometime.

I typed this up last night so I could post it. What I would really like to know is where James Taff and Sarah Snow were married, or where he moved from on this trip, as that would tell me where my Snows were.

"Snow Family: Information on John Payne

Source: Mrs. W. H. Nutter, 1003 North Morgan Street, Rushville, Indiana

JOHN PAYNE.

Newspaper, Nov. 13, 1844:
John Payne; Sarah Payne, Administratrix.
Land N1/2 NW 16-2-9

John Payne died 1841
Ida Belle Bayless, James Mounts, Agnes M. Payne; John P. Payne; Sally Jane Payne; Jeremiah Crawford & wife, Betsy Ann; Jacob J. Payne & Milton Payne.

Mortality Schedule, 1870:
Saluda Twp. Sarah Montgomery, age 77, widow, born Kentucky, died in March.

James Taff, son of James and Sarah Snow Taff, was born February 14, 1816 at the mouth of Laughry Creek as the family were coming down the Ohio.

George Snow died before 1830 in Clark Co, Indiana..had land grant for service under George Rogers Clark.

John Payne was born in 1772 in Baltimore, Maryland. (A handwritten note on the original typed page has “Snow Hill, Somerset Co.) He was a shoemaker by trade. He married Sarah Snow Taff at Madison Indiana, December 27, 1821. To this union was born seven children, one of whom was named Andrew. He was born in Saluda township, Jefferson County, near Paynesville (but we can’t pin-point the farm on which he was born). Birthdate was October 26, 1822. He died at his home in Paynesville,
September 15, 1915.

He was married to Electa Ann Carley, January 23, 1844. He was a veterinary, farmer and merchant near Paynesville where he spent his entire life. The town was named for him. His store stood just east of the present grocery, also his last home remains standing.

He was the father of six children, one of which was Emma, Paul’s mother.

He was a devoted member of the Tryus Universalist Church and a pioneer of Jefferson County.

Your great grandfather, Marty’s grandfather, James Taff was a son of Sarah Snow Taff by her first marriage.

We were always told that James Taff was born under a tree in the state of Ohio as the family was moving to Indiana.

Therefore, James Taff and Andrew Miller were half brothers, having the same mother.

Written by Mrs. Paul Rankin"
I have an account of James Taff's birth. Do you have it? If not, I'll type it up and post it.

My ancestors are Samuel Snow and Sarah Crawford. They are in Saluda Twp living next to Sarah Snow to married Taff, Payne, and Montgomery. I believe my Samuel is probably a sister to Sarah Snow.

Here's some info I just found:

Missouri Death Certificate # 10545
Racheal Elizabeth Crawford
b. Aug 5 1856, Jefferson County, IN
d. Apr 13, 1910, Nodaway County, MO
Father: Snow, b. Indiana
Mother: Susan Giltner, b. Indiana
Informant: James S. Dec 24 1918, Nodaway County, MO
Father: John Crawford, b. Indiana
Mother: unknown, b. Indiana
Informant: Mrs. James S. Crawford (must be second wife)
Buried: Parnell Cemetery

1880 Census, Saluda Twp, Jefferson City, MO, p. 263A
James Crawford 21 IN DE IN
Rachel Crawford 19 IN MO KY
Souce: familysearch.org

Susan Giltner married Phineas/Prince Snow in 1851, and who is buried in Saluda Twp.

Marilyn

This may be an amazing coincidence.
My Andrew Giltner and Susannah Kistler had a daughter Sarah. Her sister, Eliza married Samuel Taff in 1834 in Clark, IN. There is also a marriage record of Sallie Giltner marrying an Abraham Taff in 1839, which is too early, but there is another marriage record to Isaac Taff and Sallie Giltner...
Little is know about my Andrew Giltner. I do know his daughter, Sarah, was unmarried in 1852 when he died and the daughter Eliza was married at that time to Samuel Taff.

Thanks for all the good Taff info. I do believe the James who died in 1832 isn't the same one we're talking about here, but likely from the same family. I believe the James Taff we're talking about here was the son of Samuel Taff and Sarah Snow.
Two of my Giltner ancestors married Taffs of this family.

George Washington Taff Obituary

Spectator, Ozark, Franklin Co, AR, May 1, 2002 edition; 50 Years Ago section: Arrangements were incomplete Monday for the funeral of George Washington Taff, 71, who died at his home on Route 2, Mulberry, after a long illness. Survivors include his wife (Julie Mae Spencer 6/12/1887-10/25/1966); five daughters, Mrs Nelia Shores of Glendora, CA, Mrs Ethel Earls, Mrs Edith Pointer, and Mrs Ruby Trotter, all of Mulberry, and Mrs. Lillie Powell of Ozark; a sister, Mrs (Mary) Ida Wilbourn of Mulberry (my connection); two brothers, T.K. (Thomas K) Taff of Loco, OK, and Bud (Leland Smith) Taff of Ft Worth, TX, and one half-brother, J.W. (John Walter) Taff of Rt 1, Mulberry. (The parenthesis are mine. George W, 4/4/1880-4/21/1952, along with his wife, brother, Joshua R Taff, died 2/18/1936, and Joshua's wife, Marinda M Williams Taff, died 7/6/1948, are buried in Concord Cemetery, Crawford Co, AR. The fact that J.W. is referred to as a half-brother and the other three siblings are brothers and sister shows that David A Taff had only two wives, Margaret Cox and Anna Lydia/Lydia Anna Reeves. Mary Ida Taff Wilbourn's funeral home record shows Ann Reeves to be her mother, and David A Taff her father.)

John Taff-Spartanburg, SC 1820 census

pg. 273-John Taff, farmer: 2 m. under 10; 1 m 16 under 26; 1 f. 10 under 16. I believe this to be the son of William and wife unknown. However, John's wife, Susannah, was 65 in 1860 Cass CO, GA census. Did enumerator put her in wrong age column in 1820?
