Martinsville Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Clark Co., Illinois, TAGGART PLOT: FATHER, Mathias M. Taggart, 1833-1939, MOTHER, Lucy A. Ishler 1834, 1916. I do not know if this is the correct Mathias you seek. I have no information on Martin Taggart. There was also a William F. Taggart b. Ohio, a Harness maker on the 1870 Cumberland County, Ill. Fed Census, p. 333, Hazel Del post office, m. to Margaret Haskel (surname on IGI). They lived next door to my direct line ancestors who next moved to Martinsville. The Taggart family is related through collateral marriage; they are not my direct line.
Marjorie M.

Taggart in Leeds Co Ontario Canada

I recently found that my Ida Sherwood b.5 June 1843 Portland, Leeds Co. Ontario Canada was married to a Mr. Taggart and they had a son Elmer Taggart in Feb 1863. Ida Sherwood was on the 1861 census for Bastard Twp. Leeds Co. with her parents (William Homer Sherwood and Elizabeth Shipman) and she was 19 and single. She must have married Mr. Taggart about 1862. I found her on the 1870 census in Oswego, NY as Ida Lovelace, b. Canada, with a husband Alfred Lovelace, b. NY, and her son Elmer Taggart b. Canada, was 7 years old. The census says that both his parents were born in Canada. There was also a baby Hattie Lovelace 9 months old. So Ida Sherwood Taggart married Alfred Lovelace by 1869. Mr. Taggart either died before 1869 or they divorced. I am hoping someone researching the Taggart name in the Leeds Co. area will know who he is. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Penny, Ottawa, Ont.
It was very interesting to read that Elizabeth Duncan Wells Church is your great-great-great grandmother.

You may be interested to know that my husband and I own the house on Sugar Island and are in the process of renovating it in a historically appropriate manner. A number of the Church relatives came for a visit several years ago, and if you were one of them, I just wanted to up-date you that the project is going well and still moving steadily forward.

Just thought you may be interested.

I believe he's son of Henry and Mary Taggart, but I haven't found documentation to prove it. If Henry was married twice, that's Mary the first wife. He may have been the Henry Taggart that married Mary Barker 20 Feb 1742/3 after his first wife, Mary, died. I also believe, but haven't found definitive evidence, that this Henry Taggart is the immigrant ancestor who came from Isle of Man, UK. I'm descended from William, Sr, by his 2nd wife, Almy Clarke. By the way, if you haven't found it yet, Cynthia Taggart's "Poems" is available for download on books.google.com with the memoir of William Taggart, Jr. beginning on page xxxi.

All I have to work from is a Baptism record of my grandfather Herbert Alexander Parke Taggart (born 30 December 1904) from the parish of All Saints in Belfast dated 29 March 1905. I believe the census records don’t exist prior to 1911, and I can’t find him or his parents Alexander and Sarah Park Taggart.

I hope your Jacob is possible ancestor of my Samuel Taggart b. 1796 in Westmoreland PA. I am leaping to the possibility that Jacob's son Samuel b. (date unknown0 was my Samuel's father. I have the will of this Jacob of Taggart's Crossroads in Chester Co. PA and in that will it names two of his sons a William and a Samuel. Since my Samuel Taggart's line named succeeding generations of sons William and Samuel I am hoping for a connection. I have been up against the familiar "brick wall" and have not been able to trace my known Samuel back to any known parent until a researcher found this will of 12/1787. Do you have any further knowledge of the families of any of the other brothers? This researcher found the sons of John and William and no Samuel there. Since it was customary to name a sons after the father I am hoping to find this Samuel to have a son Samuel.

This is very exciting! I had begun to think I would never find another connection to this Jacob Tagart & Ann Morton line. I have just sent a private message to you via Ancestry Connections, in the hopes we could exchange more details.

We descend from Jacob Taggart(Tagart)as: Jacob, William, Reuben, Calvin, Edward, Calvin, Robert. Our Taggarts lived at Taggart's Crossroads in East Marlborough Chester Co, until Calvin I. He moved his residence to Philadelphia, where he operated a steamboat business with his son Edward, who in turn, resided in Philadelphia and Camden, NJ. Upon the death of Edward, his widow and three young children moved to Chicago, to be near her family.

Thanks for your response.
Of Jacob Taggart (Tagart) b. 1727 - d. 1787
Military Service: While we have found no records showing that Jacob and Ann were members of the Society of Friends (Quaker) - several of their children, and grandchildren were. Within a few generations most had left the Quaker faith and joined other Protestant denominations. We have found a record of at least one serving in the Civil War.

Please, tell me, how are you linked to this family? I'd be happy to share information.

Lydia Taggart (Tagart)(1815-1848) was the daughter of Quakers Reuben Taggart (1793-1848) and Asenath Cooper of Chester Co, PA. Interestingly, given the name of her son, she was a grandaughter of William Taggart.
Could this be the Lydia you are looking for?
If so, Do you have information you could share?

We descend from the Jacob Taggart-Ann Morton line. Other than noting Archibald and Jacob appeared in Chester County at about the same time (c.1750)- we have never found a connection (other than they both named their first sons, William.) We hit a dead end for the ancestry of Jacob. Family lore says he had a brother Thomas, who came with Jacob from Ireland. Cannot confirm.

Since your post in 2006- were you able to link these Taggart families? Happy to share information.

hello, I don't know if you have gotten the info you need, but I believe I have info for you - John and Nancy had several children - Samuel and Mary were two of eleven. In 1880-or so , they moved from Washington, Indiana to Fort Worth, Texas. I am living on a property that he and Nancy lived on, with his son Samuel. I think that I even have photos of either Samuel or John - not sure since the photos were found in the house - some were labeled, some weren't. Contact me if you'd like more info. lialou@hotmail.com

No, I haven't been able to find any information on Jacob's ancestry.

I find it odd that none of the TAGGART's listed in the Revolutionary War records seem to come from this family.
The information I have shows the father was married to Mary Clarke and the son to Elizabeth Macomber. I don't know if they had middle names or not. I know that both men served during the Revolutionary War, the father was a Major and junior was a Captain. I cannot seems to find the parents of the father.
Looking for any/all info on a Jacob Taggart of Taggart's Croosroads, East Marlboro, Chester Co. PA. Jacob had sons John, William, Jesse, Joshua and Samuel. Looking specifically for any info on Samuel and his son's names.
He made a will on Dec. 1787 in PA. This Jacob may be an ancestor through son Samuel. Another researcher found the names of the children of John and William. A good candidate for an ancestor is Samuel. Any help greatly appreciated

Your information on Daniel Taggart Wells is correct...Elizabeth Duncan Wells Church is my great-great-great grandmother. All of the information I have found on the Wells family comes from a very detailed written history called "The Ancestry and Descendants of Calvin Wells Senior, of Greenfield, Mass, and Byron, NY." It was prepared by Calvin Wells Sr. It traces the Wells family to 1630 when Hugh arrived in America...very detailed history...Elizabeth Duncan Wells married Philetis Swift Church, a merchant and lumberman. They built their home on Sugar Island, Michigan. Both are buried in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan....I found the Wells document in Bayliss Public Library historic files. All Daniel Taggart Wells descendents are listed.
