Rose,

I know this message is very old, but just ran across it this evening in a link from the Taker family board. Peter was indeed married to a Keating and then to Catherine MacLean. As I told Frank Taker earlier, according to the 1881 census of Canada, he gave his birthplace as Russia, and nationality as Russian, so you may be on to something with Teichert. The earliest form of Taker surname I have seen in my research is TAGER (pronounced Tay-Gher... hard g)... the name went on to become Taker as it is spelled to this day. Your ancestor may have gone from the border of Finland/Russia to England, and then set sail for Canada, so anything is possible. I would also tend to lean toward the Finnish ancestry as many Russian surnames use the "ovich" and "ovna" endings meaning son of/daughter of in their surnames. One can't do that with Peter's surname. There could also be the name Teckoff/Tekov. I too have been toying around with possibilities as you can see. If I do stumble upon anything, will gladly let you know. Sincerely, Dennis Boudreau (Magdalen Islands genealogist)

Rose,

Question for you? Are you sure Herbert Taker's mother was a Keating? I have no birth record for him, but his other siblings were all children of Peter and Kate MacLean who married circa 1860. Herbert's date of birth given in the 1901 census says 1862, but it was probably the year earlier. In addition, I know the children of Nicolas Keating and Nancy Grant, and have no daughter of theirs married to Peter. Are you sure of Herbert's mother's maiden name then, and if so, do you have any documentation which proves this, or just oral tradition? Thanks, it is appreciated, Dennis

Hi Rose, My Grandparents were Wilfred Taker and Lillian Ross Keating. Peter Taker was married to Mary Catherine McLean, Peter was a Sailmaker. I haven't yet figured out where he comes from, but legend has it that He was from Finland because of a finnish bible he had!? Mary Catherine was born in England in 1825 according to the 1901 census. Peter's real name was Alexander Peter Taker. A very kind Dennis Boudreau looked up this information for me. He has a query link from the Gaspe- Iles de la Madaliene Gen Web page. Good luck in your search and if you need any more information, let me know. Lisa
