My line of Talkingtons went to Arkansas where they settled on the Western edge in Hempsted, then Washington, Scott and Crawford Co. After the Civil War, some of them moved to Collin Co, TX, others to Polk Co, MO, and San Diego, Orange, Mendocino, and Fresno Co in CA.

Do you know who Ruth Talkington's husband was?
In one place I saw that Ruth Talkington married Philip Abram Rose on Oct 1803. This Ruth Talkington Rose moved to OH and then IA, where she was buried in 1875,
Another source said that Ruth married Adam Lamb on May 8, 1804 in Logan Co, KY. She too was supposed to have moved to IA where she died on May 15, 1875 and in buried in Swan, Marion Co.

The two women had similar birth/death years. However the Ruth who married Philip Rose was supposed to have been born in PA in 1786 (suggesting she was part of the "Northern Talkingtons") while the Ruth who married Adam Lamb was supposed to have been born in 1780 in KY (suggesting she was part of the "Southern Talkingtons"). I think that the latter was d/o Robert and Elizabeth (Heiwood) Talkington, but do not know the parents of the former (except that I think her father's name was John).

It is confusing isn't it? I think that Ruth and Stephen were the children of Robert and Elizabeth (the original immigrants) and brothers of John since John was only born in 1772. I have the final three children of R and E as follows:
Ruth 1780-1875
Robert 1782
Stephen 1783-1859
HOWEVER I am in correspondence with someone whose ancestor, Sarah Talkington, was born in Logan County KY in 1785 and we think that she must have been the final child of R and E who would have been 44 and 43 at this time. Apart from her birth though, we have found no early trace of her.

John was definitely married to Lottie Sapp in 1795 but I can find nothing else about her so it would make sense if she perhaps died and he married Sarah Thatcher in time to start having children in 1812.

Andrew Jackson was married to Mary Ann (Polly) Isbell 1816-1889 and they had (as far as I know!) nine children

I know of only two children of John but would love to know about more. I just have
Joseph 1812
Andrew Jackson 1813-1889

The Andrew Jackson Talkingtons went to Alabama (where John, his father, died)and then some went on to Arkansas.

Kind regards, Caroline

Talkington Immigrant ancestors

Part of my confusion about John Talkington and wife Sarah Thatcher was information from Wayne Talkington - - I believe he said that "the northern Talkingtons came to America at a different time than the Southern Talkington families. They trace their ancestry back to John Talkinton of Pennsylvania who came to America from England before the revolution. He was married to Sarah Thatcher, whom some think was related to John and Priscilla (Mullens) Alden" The name of Sarah Thatcher caught my eye when we started communicating about your ancestor and reminded me that I needed to sort out their ancestors.

My confusion came from online posts that stated that the line of Jesse Talkingtons (the "Northern line") came from this john. Other information that I found online stated that the Robert & Elizabeth (Heiwood) Talkington line (the "Southern Line") came also from this John. Both could not be true if the two lines are distinct and do not have a common ancestor in America.

I would appreciate help in sorting this out before I start trying to change my family file.
I believe that part of my earlier response to you may have been in error - - I have Lottie Sapp as one of two wives of John Talkington. I got this info online didn't check carefully as it is not in my direct line. It is more likely that John did have only one wife, as you believed, and that Lottie was the wife of his son, again as you thought.

I believe that John and Sarah Thatcher began having children in 1786 (Ruth) and then Stephen Jacob in 1791. The reason I had thought that a second wife was likely is that there was such a long gap between the next child I had for John (Joseph in 1812) and then Andrew Jackson that you mentioned in 1813 who probably did marry Lottie Sapp and not his father. I hadn't realized that John Talkington and Sarah Thatcher had 14 children in all (I had know about the first and last and read about the total number recently in an online post).

When I had found them in the 1820 census, I had thought that there was another family living with them but realize now that all of the children could have been theirs!

1820 - Russelville, Logan, KY p 6
3m <10
3m 10-16
1m 16-18
2m 16-26
2m 45+
1f <10
1f 10-16
1f 16-26
1f 45+
6 people engaged in ag, No slaves.

I am descended from Robert and Elizabeth's son Stephen and his wife Sally Acock, through their son Edward Pennington Talkington and Elizabeth J Bland, their daughter Mary Malissa Talkington and JJ Reed and then their daughter Georgia Mattie Reed and James Madison Harris (my great grandparents). I'll try to attach family group sheets for this lineage. I have lots more information if you are interested.

Sorry, I couldn't attach these family group sheets - - I can only attach a photo or gedcom. If you send me your email address, I'll send them that way.

Thank you for your message. I had no idea that John had been married twice. He is my 4x G. Grandfather through a son named Andrew Jackson Talkington born 1813 (d.1856) to Lottie Sapp.
Andrew Jackson married Mary Anne (Polly) Isbell (who was reputedly 3/4 Cherokee and had at least 7 children, including Henry Franklin born 1838 to his wife Emily Still Wheelis.
HF had 5 children, my grandmother Virginia Alabama being the 4th. Her brother John was a State Representative for Arkansas.
By a strange coincidence --and knowing nothing about the early Talkingtons, we moved to Logan County, KY 2 years ago so I will check out the 1830 census in the archives here.
John died in Jackson County Alabama but I have not been able to find out where he is buried or any trace of Lottie Sapp.
I do have information on Isaac Talkington (b.1795), son of Samuel. He married Elizabeth Morrow and she is buried with 3 of her children on a hill behind a farm in Todd county.
Which of Robert and Elizabeth's children do you descend from?
Kind regards, Donald

Re: John Talkington

This is all I know about John Talkington:
Robert and Elizabeth (Heiwood) Talkington immigrated from Manchester England before 1760. They first appeared in Daysville, Logan Co, KY in 1764 (There is little left of Daysville now except a country store - - located on Hwy 68 at Logan Co line near Elkton KY. I have a picture if you would like it).

Robert and Elizabeth had 4 sons and 6 daughters between 1764 and 1783) Robert and his sons Samuel, John, Robert, and Stephen, became relatively large landholders, having received some early land grants. Much of their land was good farmland on the Whippoorwill River. In 1819, Logan Co split; Daysville became part of Todd Co

John was born in 1772 in KY. He had two wives (Sarah Thatcher with whom he was supposed to have had 14 children (but I know the name of only one) and Lottie Sapp whom he probably married in 1795 in Washington Co, KY). He and Lottie had at least one son, Joseph, in 1812. Joseph married Mariah Perry in 1831. They moved to IL when they were still young and had 12 children (they named a son John and a daughter Lottie).

John's father, Robert died in 1799. In 1802 John was allowed 200 acres of Robert Talkington’s estate so it is asumed he was his son. John's widowed mother continued to live on family farm - - 1810 Logan Co, KY census, she was listed as HoH living next to her son Samuel. It appears that some of her grandchildren are living with her.

1820 - Russelville, Logan, KY p 6 It appears a brother or sister and their family are living with John Talkington. [he was enumerated on the same page as his sister-in-law 's brother, Alan Acock. .John owned no slaves]
3m <10
3m 10-16
1m 16-18
2m 16-26
2m 45+
1f <10
1f 10-16
1f 16-26
1f 45+
6 people engaged in ag

1830 - Todd, KY, p3
He is supposed to be listed 3rd from bottom, but the scanned document on ancestry.com is completely unreadable

[Logan Co, KY was created out of Lincoln Co in 1820 and then Todd Co was taken from Logan and Christian Co]

I am looking for any information on my 4xG-Grandfather John Talkington who was born in Logan County, KY in 1772. He was the 2nd son (5th child) of Robert and Elizabeth (Heiwood) Talkington. John had a least 2 sons, Joseph (b. 1812) and Andrew Jackson (b 1813, d. 1856). Jim was born ca 1820 in Ulster, No Ireland.

By 1860, Jim and Elmira were living in Collin Co, TX (p96 of census on ancestry.com) near her brothers Leonidas, Maxwell, and Chesterfield and not far from her cousin Allen Talkington and his family. Allen was the 2nd oldest son of Stephen Talkington, Stephen was the youngest brother of Samuel Talkington, Elmira's grandfather.

The children of Elizabeth and Isaac Morrow are as you have listed except I have no record of Elmira at all.

Emily's tombstone in the Talkington/Morrow cemetery is close to those of Elizabeth, Leander, and Orlando and reads as follows:
In memory of Emily F. Talkington who was born April 8th 1829 and died June 29th 1847.

The "4" in 1847 looks like a "1" but close examination shows it to be a "4". We have noticed other inscriptions of "4" which have the same problem.

I will try and attach a photo.
regards, caroline

Stephen and Sally (Acock) Talkington

Stephen was born in 1783 (not sure where, but I assume KY)
Sarah (Sally) Acock was born in 1784, NC probably Halifax, Warren, NC) Her parents were Robert Eaton Acock, Sr (a well-documented Rev War soldier) and Mary Blanchett)

1803 - Stephen purchased 200 acres on Elk Fork of Red River from Barbara and Joseph Alexander of Bedford Co TN. The land was originally granted to Barbara Balek (first marriage?). Witnessed by Edw Wade & Jas McKisick. Recorded in Bedford Co, TN in Jul 1816 and in Christian Co, KY on Oct 9, 1816 This land was in the southeast quadrant of early Christian County, which later became the southwest quadrant of Todd Co when it was formed in 1820.

In 1805 he filed, and then withdrew, a claim against his father's estate for a mill site

1807 - Stephen and Sally were married in Christian Co, KY. I have a copy of their marriage bond, which was posted later (Apr 25 1807) found in the Hopkinsville Library.

1810 - Hopkinsville, Christian, KY (p532/24, near Rbt Acock family)
2m <10 (Edward & Allen)
1m 26-44 (Stephen)
1f 16-25 (Sally)

1820-Todd Co, KY 3 people engaged in Ag, no slaves
1m (<10) ?
2m (10-16) Edward Pennington, 12; Allen Acock, 10
2m (16-26) ?
1m (26-45) Stephen, 37
4f <10 Margaret Elizabeth, 8; Mary, 2; Sarah Ann, 1 and ?
1f (10-16) ?
1f (26-45) Sally, 36
There must have been another family living with them, because they would have had only 3 daughters and 2 sons by them, all under 16. One of Stephen's older brothers who was a widower?

1820 - land was patented to Isaac, Joseph and Sally Talkington before Isaac was in 1824

1830-counted in first census of Hempstead Co, AR and is in tax list

8/10/1831 sold 150 acres to George Clayton of Logan Co, KY (this was land that had been patented to Elizabeth on which she had lived) and was also the land she’d willed to grandsons Joseph & Isaac)

1826-1830 moved to Arkansas. The story is that Stephen and his older sons came overland with their livestock. Sally and the younger children (Mary, Sarah Ann, and Isaac Walton) came by flatboat. They were accompanied by other families, including that of Abel Bland, whose daughter Elizabeth married Edward Talkington in 1830 in Hempstead, AR.

1837 - Stephen and his son Edward filed 2, 80-acre parcels and 2, 40-acre parcels in Howard Co, AR in 1837 and 1843
Washington, Doc# 176, 40 acres, apr 1 1837, SENW, 11s 27w 13
Washington, Doc# 138, 80 acres, aug 1 1837, E1/2SW, 11S 27W 13

1839 - Stephen registered 40 acres in Fayetteville, Washington, AR and a few months later 40 more acres in Washington Co (in Cane Hill near Edward’s family?)
Fayetteville, Doc# 2453, 40 acres, sep 2 1839, nenw, 14n 31w 17

1840 - Mountain Township, Washington Co, AR (living near Edward)
1m 15-20 Isaac Walton (18)
1m 50-60 Stephen (57)
1f 20-30 (All their daughters were married by then)
1f 60-70 Sally (56)

1844 - registered 77.54 more acres in Fayettville, Washington, AR
Fayetteville, Doc# 4486, 77.54 acres, aug 1 1844, n1/2nw, 14n 31w 5

1850 - Jasper, Crawford, AR, p6. Living near sons Isaac and Allen (Edward lived just south in Tomlinson, Scott, AR). He owned 1 23-year old male slave, although everything I've read said that the family was pro-Union during the Civil War
Talkington, Stephen, 67, NC (an error?)
Sarah, 66, NC

1850 - Sally died in Van Buren, Crawford, AR

Oct 1, 1859 - Stephen died of typhoid fever. Altho was supposed to have been one of the first people to be buried in the Fairview Cemetery, just up the hill from old section of Van Buren, I couldn’t find his grave.

In a separate post, I'll provide the information I have on Stephen Talkington - - he would have been their last child.

I have a question about the children of Isaac and Elisa Morrow Talkington. These are the children I have listed for them:
Maxwell Calamas (1832-1926)
Leonidas M (Lee) (1834-1912)
Chesterfield Berkley (1840-1905)
Elizabeth (Lizzie) 1842 - ?)
Elmira E (1825 - ?)
Leander (1826-1827)
Orlando T (1837-1838)
I don't have a daughter Emily. Eliza married and lived to have 10 children, so wasn't she. I also have Elmira marrying and having at least 4 children in Collin Co, TX, so it wasn't she.

I would be happy to share any information with you but I have no information about Stephen and his line.
Robert (1740-1799) and Elizabeth Heiwood (1742-1813) were both born in Manchester and married there in 1762. They appear in Daysville, Logan County, KY by the birth of their first child in 1764, Hannah. In 1819 Logan County split and Daysville became part of Todd County

They had 10 children all of whom survived into adulthood--rare in those days!
Hannah 1764
Samuel 1766
Nancy 1768
Margaret 1770
John 1772
Elizabeth 1774
Mary 1776
Ruth 1780
Robert 1782
Stephen 1783

My husband descends from John and his wife Lottie who, towards the end of his life went to live in Alabama where some of his family had settled. From there the next generation moved to White County, Arkansas, and finally, my husband's grandmother to Guthrie, OK.

We have also researched a thread of Samuel's descendants. His son Isaac married an Elizabeth Morrow and became large landholders in Todd County for a while. Some of their family moved to Prosper, TX where I believe some of their descendants still live. We live in Logan County and there is a tiny Morrow/Talkington cemetery as part of a farm about 5 miles away. We have started to clean it up a little but it is difficult as it is unfenced and the farmers allows his cows to graze there so most of the tombstones have been broken and knocked over. Buried there are Elizabeth Morrow Talkington, 2 of her babies, Leander and Orlando, and her 17 year old daughter Emily. The rest of the burials are Morrows.
We are doing some work in the archives here and have found out that the various Talkingtons (Robert and his sons mainly) were large landholders--having received some early land grants. Much of their land was on the Whippoorwill river here. It is good farmland and very beautiful. We have found evidence of slave ownership--Isaac owned at least 10 slaves.
I hope this helps and I must stress that this research is very much ongoing. I do have photos of the graves and would be happy to take anyone to see them who cares to visit (very difficult to find without knowing where to look!)

Kind regards, Caroline

Thanks for the information. I don't have this line in my family file. Could you provide a little more info?
I am pretty sure that I am descended from the same line:
Robert Talkington and Elizabeth (Heiwood?) from England & KY >
Stephen Talkington & Sally Acock (KY and AR) >
Edward Pennington Talkington & Elizabeth Bland (KY & AR)
Mary Malissa Talkington & JJ Reed (AR, MO, CA)
Georgia Mattie Reed & James Madison Harris (AR, MO, CA, AR)
(my paternal great grandparents)

I have a fair amount of information about this line and would be happy to share.

I don't have any information about the Robert > John Talkington line that you mentioned in this post. I'd appreciate more information.

Also, do you know anything about the parents of the immigrant family, Robert and Elizabeth (Heiwood?) Talkington. I know there is a line of Talkingtons who used the name Jesse a lot. They spent time in WV and then moved west, but farther north than my line. I've never been sure about who was the common ancestor between the two lines.
My name is Rick Read. I am the research aide for the Whatcom Genealogical Society in Bellingham, WA. One of members was recently given a photo album that was donated the local library. There was little information in the album about the pictures, but there are references to "grandfather Talkington" and "Mable Talkington Smith" and baby "Eva Derine (?) Smith".
The album may have been given to a Grace Smith on or about 3 Feb 1887.
Many of the photos seem to have been taken in Rothesay (New Brunswick?). The photo of "grandfather" may have been taken by Gates in Waverly, IL.

We're trying to track down the rightful owner of the album. If you have any thoughts, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Pls contact me at rmr-wgs@comcast.net

Rick

I am directly to the "southern" Talkingtons, but am tracking the other branch as well. Who is the father/mother of the Jesse Talkington you mentioned in your earlier post (children are buried in Mt Olivet Cemetery in Alert)? I can't fit them into the family tree I am developing for that part of the Talkington family.

By the way, do you or anyone else on the message board know if the two branches are related and through whom?

I have quite a bit of information about the Talkingtons - - My great grandmother, Mary Malissa Talkington was Richard Steven/Stephen Richard's aunt. I have traced their lineage back to the 1700s, visited some graves, found great stories about them online, etc. What would be the best way to share this information with you?
