Hello. Thank you for writing.

I've been e-mailing with Mary - away from the Board. She will probably respond to you on the Board.

As I probably mentioned in my other message, one of my grandfather's sisters was Mrs. Helen (LEWIS) TALMADGE. She grew up in Stoneham, MA, and married in MA. The couple moved to NJ where her husband came from for a few years, and then moved out to Gardena, CA.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

I have been researching the Talmage line for a number of years but not Jehiel's line. However, my ancestors were Thomas Talmage and Mary McCoy, through their daughter Susannah, the eldest of the family.

The number of clergy in this family is remarkable, most of whom attended the New Brunswick Theological Seminary (NJ). While Princeton had a similar seminary (Presbyterian), NB was Reformed. And, it was only a stone's throw from Raritan or Somerville where the Talmages lived (and Thomas is buried).

Anyone wishing to communicate with me on furthering this line, I would be pleased to share.

Sue

The Rev. Jehiel (or Jahial) married Letitia Stryker on March 13, 1817. She was born in 1791 and died December 1824. Jehiel died September 26, 1854 at the home of his son, the Rev. Peter Stryker Talmage. His second wife was Maria Hendric. Jehiel was the 5th child of Major Thomas Talmage and Mary Goyn-McCoy.

Is it possible that the Frank Talmadge you were looking for was related to Henry Pearl Talmadge?

Henry Pearl Talmadge I, son of Frances Anna Cossitt and Henry Talmadge, was born March 10, 1847, at Troy, New York. The Talmadge family were descendents of Thomas Talmadge, who came to the Colonies from England in 1631. Talmadge received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard College in 1868 and married Lucy White on April 18, 1872.

They named their first child, born on September 22, 1873 in New York City, Lucy. The rest of his children were born in Netherwood, New Jersey. His son, Henry Pearl Talmadge II, was born on May 15, 1877, graduated from Harvard in 1899, and became a lawyer in New York City. His son, Arthur, was born on February 25, 1880, graduated from Havard in1902 and died eight years later, on January 10, 1910, at Prescott, Arizona. His daughter, Helen, was born on August 30, 1881. His son, Frank, was born on January 19, 1884.

Sherry;
I am fairly new at this, but hope to shed some light on the the darkness. I beleive thta the James Montgomery that you see in Nebraska is not the same James Montgomery belonging to Martha Talmadge. Look at the places of birth of parents that are listed.
I am of the line of Josiah Talmadge Montgomery who went west to California and who did not like to make himself apear on any census until 1900, so tracking him has been fun.
You will next find Martha and daughter Cora on the 1900 census living in Los Angeles, CA. I have tentatively tracked David Cora Montgomery to Lompoc, CA. and family oral history says that all but 2 of James & Martha's children would end up in this area. Again I have not proven this and really have only been doing this for a few months.
If you have any questions you can contact me directly at kimbal.montgomery@verizon.net , good hunting.

Hello. I just found out that my father's aunt married a Durling TALMADGE, who was born in 1894 in either NJ or NY. I don't know anything else about him.

If he is the right man, he married Helen Gertrude LEWIS around 1924 in Stoneham, MA. They had a daughter, Mona, in 1925, a daughter, Marian, in 1926, and then 4 more children. The 1930 Census had them living in Paterson, NJ, with 4 children (2 young sons).

I don't know when they moved to California, but they seem to have lived in Gardena, CA, or in Los Angeles, for the rest of their marriage. I just found out that Durling died in 1959, and I was reminded that Helen died in 1972.

I just did a little on-line searching, and I'm not finding a TALMADGE family in MA, NJ, or NY, with a son, Durling.

Does anyone know which family he might have been part of? (One "hint" is that his death record said that his mother's maiden name was LEWIS, but that could have been a mistake.)

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Hello. I continue to look for the husband of Mrs. Helen (LEWIS) TALMADGE. She was born in 1896 in Stoneham, MA, so her husband would have been born in the 1880's or 1890's. They probably married around 1920 in MA, and seem to have lived in Lynn, MA, before they left for Gardena, CA.

I was just looking for Census information and found a Freeman TALMADGE living in Methuen, MA, in 1910. He was there with a wife and an adult daughter, 28, and a married son, 29, was living with them (with wife and 2 babies). They were all born in NY (except for that wife and babies).

Freeman was 51, and I don't know which part of NY he came from.

I'm just curious if Helen's husband was somehow related to Freeman's family.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

P.S. I was just looking at some old postings and saw that there is an alternate spelling TALLMADGE. I'll have to look for census information with that spelling.

I'm looking for a _____ TALMADGE who married a Helen LEWIS (b1896 MA) in Stoneham, MA. They lived in Lynn, MA, before moving to Gardena, CA, in 1920's.

Also, I was just looking for census information and I found a Freeman TALMADGE and his family living in Methuen, MA, in 1910. He was 52, and had 2 adult children, 28 and 29, living with him. They were all born in NY.

I'm wondering if Helen's husband had a connection to Freeman's family.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Hello. Something on my genealogy to do list for a long time is summarizing the extended family of my great-grandparents, John LEWIS and Mary CORKILL, who married in Nova Scotia in 1879. * They raised 13 children in Stoneham, MA.

Yesterday, I spent the entire day typing up this summary. It took a long time because my notes were not in order. One of the couples I didn't have information on, or so I thought, was _____ and Helen (LEWIS) TALMADGE. I just went to the archives of this Board, and discovered I did have a little information. I will add this information to my "summary" now.

But, I'd like to bring the couple up for discussion again.

I believe that my grandfather's older sister, Helen LEWIS, probably married around 1920 to _____ TALMADGE, probably in Stoneham, MA. In 1923 and 1924 when her parents died, Helen and her husband were living in Lynn, MA.

I do not have the 1930 Census available to me, so I can't check whether they were in Gardena, CA, in that year. (I can't find Mr. TALMADGE in MA in 1920.)

Because of my queries on the Lists, I have found 2 "distant cousins," and they might have information for me. I will ask them next week.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

They were dated around 1894. Anyone else have a similar experience? I would like to know if he was that important to people back then. Are they of interest to anyone? She was Presbyterian in Courtland, Lawrence Co. AL. Far, far away from Brookyln!

I would be surprised if you received hate mail for a very apt analogy. No such analogy would ever be correct in every detail, and shouldn't be expected to be so. My comparison with Jimmy Bakker was made with a nod to some of the controversy surrounding Rev. Talmage, however you are quite right that his political connections and influence were probably more similar to Rev. Graham's. (If I recall correctly, Talmage knew 7 presidents personally.)

Several books by Talmage, including his autobiography are now available on Project Gutenberg:

http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/authors/t#a5618

I have several more books by or about him in my collection which I will add when I have time.

I am searching for information on a book,"The Beautiful Story" written by J W Buel, Co-authored by Rev. T Dewitt Talmadge. It was copywrited in 1887 and published by Historical Publishing Company in St Louis Mo. It is a companion book to the bible I believe. My book has the front cover missing and I would like to give it to my pastor as a gift. Any history of the book would be greatly appreciated.

Look up Russell's death data on the Social Security Death Index. It will provide the date and place of his death. You can then apply for a transcript of his death record which should list the names of his parents.

Even if you are new to genealogy, there is a certain amount of research you must do before seeking outside help. If you DO need assistance, you should include ALL of the information you have - for example the year of birth or death.

Hello. I am looking for more information about one of my grandfather's 12 siblings ! Her name was Helen G. LEWIS, born in Stoneham, MA, and she married a _____ TALMADGE in MA.

At some point, Mr. and Mrs. TALMADGE moved to Gardena, CA, where her brother, John LEWIS, had moved to !

I don't know where the TALMADGE children were born. And, there is a chance that Mr. TALMADGE either died young, or the couple divorced.

I just received the death notice for Mrs. Helen TALMADGE from 1972, and her husband is not mentioned.

Her children are listed as daughter, Mrs. Mariam CORPLE or CORPIE (shown as Mariam COYNE on death record), and sons, Richard TALMADGE, Robert TALMADGE, Peter TALMADGE, and Carl TALMADGE.

I have more details on Helen's family which I can post at another time !

David,

In doing some family research, found that my grandmother's (1886-1971) half twin brothers (born 1890 now both deceased) were named Joseph Talmadge and John DeWitt. The twins were born in Tennessee and the family later moved to Texas and then Louisiana. My having been raised Catholic, and they too, long story, I wondered where in the world my great grandmother got those middle names for my great uncles. My great grandmother (born in Alabama) was not Catholic but married second time a Frenchman Catholic, who the twins were a product of, and apparently the children were raised Catholic by the father. Only last year did I learn from a fellow Presbyterian church member that I attend, who DeWitt Talmadge was. I am now trying to find out more about him, but on line have not found much. Can you tell me where I might find more of a bio on him. Apparently my Christian Reformed great grandmother may have read his sermons in the newspapers? Thank you for any help.

I have been reading with great interest the biographies you have listed. My Uncle (DeWitt Talmage Graham) was born Jan. 1890 and I have wondered for years from where this name came. I feel with certainty I have found the source, because of the time element. My grandparents must have heard him preach or at least knew of him, and named their first born after him. What a magnificent person! I would compare him with Billy Graham though, rather than Jim Bakker! Have you posted any other of his books since the date of your 2004 query? I am going to check in the local libraries for his writings. Thanks to you I believe I have found another brick in my genealogy. I have just recently found the family of my uncle Talmadge in Mass. If you would like to see this family on "The Graham Family Place" I will send you an invitation to the site. Regards, Gerri Abrahamsen

I've traced my ancestors back to Charles Talmage born abt 1834 in Barton Stacey, Hampshire, England who married Harriet Woolford, born 1839 Stratfieldsaye, Hampshire, England. Their children were Marice Woolford Talmage, b. 29 Jan 1860, Stratfieldsaye, Hampshire, Eng - d.1899 Caulfied, Victoria, Australia; William Talmage b abt 1869, Stratfieldsaye, Hampshire; Harry Talmage b abt 1872, Beech Hill, Berkshire; Edward Talmage b. abt 1875, Mortimer, Berkshire; and Alice Talmage, b. abt 1876, Mortimer, Berkshire. I can supply more information on descendants but I'm hoping this will be enough to determine if this might be Charles, the son of Mary and Thomas.

Martha Talmadge b abt 1825 NY to Charlotte(?)Talmadge, father unk
Married abt 1844 in Illinois to James Montgomery b abt 1817 Ohio.
James and Martha lived in the Waukegan,Lake Co.IL area until abt 1856-58, having Four known children:
David b abt 1845 IL
Grace b abt 1847 IL
Josiah b abt 1849 IL
John Hale b abt 1854 IL (married Susan Adair in Misoouri)

The family then lived in Iowa having one son Sawyer b abt 1858, and next I find them in Missouri with the birth of three children:
Edward abt 1861 MO
Cora b abt 1863 MO
Percy b abt 1866 MO

1870 Us Census in Clinton Twp. Henry Co. MO... finds Martha age 46, managing a boarding house with all the children except Josiah, and James Montgomery (Husband) is not listed.

1880 US Census, same location, now Martha is listed as a widow, with four children still at home, and one grand daughter Birdie age 6.

Now here is my dilemma, the James Montgomery and Martha I have followed from 1840-1870 lines up in dates and places to my other Montgomery families. However I find my James living with his brother William in 1880 US Census, Plattsmouth, Cass Co. Nebraska, he is either listed as visiting or writing under occupation(Hard to decipher)

#1 Possibilty the enumerator listed Martha as a widow in error on the 1880 census.
#2 Since he wasn't with the family in 1870 Census either, could his occupation require he travel?
#3 James was a scoundrel who had abandoned his family.
#4 This is not the right James Montgomery, who was a brother of William.

I am hoping to locate someone researching the Talmadge line who might have some info on Martha that would shed some light on this or rule in or out if the James Montgomery I know is with his brother in 1880 is the same James who married Martha Talmadge. As I said it lines up with dates and locations until 1880. I have found info on two of their children, but that info has not answered my questions.
I look forward to any suggestions, other possibilities that I am not seeing, or most importantly hearing from someone connected to Martha (Talmadge) Montgomery who may have further input. Thank you in advance for any kind response....Sherry in Texas
I haven't any photo's. I just recently started my research and only found out a year ago that Talmage was eliza's maiden name. William's daughter Mary Clara married William H Connor. I have counted 4 men in the family with Talmage as a middle name. sons grandsons and great grandsons of eliza. here are the names of eliza and eli Hallowell's children. my line starts with william talmage hallowell. 2nd son of eliza and eli. children are Adolphus G., william Talmage, Amanda M., Charles T., Eli Berrell, Anne Elizabeth and Bertha L. in that order. Do you happen to know the names of Eli hallowell's parents? I can't find a link to them. If you are interested in gathering information for Eliza's decendents I will forward it to you.
