Thanks for this. My grandmother was a Tams from Brekendorf(south of Schleswig). My ancestors are the same as those Tams from Nebraska (Cathy Harris/Tams).
Since those from Havetoft(north of Schleswig) are not so young a make phone calls and send them letters for confirmation and requests.
Like to find common ancestors of those from Havetoft and Brekendorf, which may be the case, but not yet confirmed.
Please respond to maru.nirusu(at)gol.com

I am just starting to input my information on Tams into Ancestry.com. Have spent time on my mothers' side as she is 88 and available for input.

My great grandfather was Peter F. Tams whose obituary lists he was from Havetoft. My grandfather, Christopf Johana Tams was around 3 years old and also born in Havetoft. I have a couple of pictures with notes on the back. One is from May 30, 1952 and the golden wedding anniversary of Uncle Julius and Aunt Meta Tams. I have another one which is them and I believe their daughter and husband. I remember that my grandmother use to correspond with relatives in Germany but have no record of address--just these two pictures. There are some other Tams' in the eastern part of Nebraska that we are trying to make a connection with but haven't had any luck yet. My family also lives in Nebraska.

The family you are talking to in Germany, are you doing via e-mail or how. Would love to make a connection with someone connected to Tams.

Looking forward to hearing from you.--Rolena (Tams) Novak

Since Lee is not a typical German name, he might have changed his name after arriving in the US. And since I have most of the Tams from and around Brekendorf in my data base, I would like to know more about his ancestry/descendants.
Pls see also: http://familytrees.genopro.com/maru-san/ma/
My maternal grandmother was a Tams.

Hi LTams - sure wish I knew who you are.

To my actual knowledge, I have no idea whether I am kin to Arthur Tams. Just when I found an obit for him, just decided to list it here.
You spoke of William Henry Tams - yes I found him too, but that one is not my great grandfather. My William Henry Tams was born in Fayetteville, NC in December 1824 to William Tams from Burslem, England and Mary Brownlow Purviance from Fayetteville, NC. After my great grandfather was born, William Tams moved to Philadelphia where he was a pottery merchant. His brother Sampson Tams was a potter and is buried in Laurel Hill. He died in 16 December 1853.
Suggest if you wish to you may email be direct to:
Emaress_nova@yahoo.com.

I'm not positive if we're talking about the same William Tams (my great great great great grandfather). The way I have been able to trace him through my family is William Tams- his son James Tams- his son George E Tams- his son Theodore Tams Sr- his son Theodore Tams Jr- and my father, Brian Tams.

I read in the genealogy book that William Henry Tams was actually James Tams's son and therefore would have been William Tams's grandson. That's where I'm not sure if we're talking about the same person.

How are you related to the Arthur J. Tams mentioned in the obituary?

William Tams who died in Philadelphia, PA on the 29th of April, 1864 and I buried with his first wife, Mary B. Tams in a vault at St. Andrews Church in Philadelphia.
I am a direct descendent through his son William Henry Tams, and then his youngest son Weightman Hanson Tams of Staunton, VA. W.Hanson Tams was my grandfather and my mother was his only child.

So, if we are speaking of the same William Tams, that makes us cousins (smile).

Do you know if William Tams married again after 1830? If so, can you give me the information as to his wife's name and any children from that marriage?

Hoping to hear from you soon.

Dear emaress_nova,

I'm not sure how far you've come in connecting William Tams and Arthur Tams, but I have a piece of information that you may find useful. I found a book online called "Genealogical and Personal Memorial of Mercer County, New Jersey" by Francis Bazley Lee. It includes several pages of information on the Tams, including a connection between Arthur and William.

William Tams was my great great great great grandfather.

TAMS family St. Andrews Cemetery Philadelphia

According to tax roles there is a cemetery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania located 267 S Fifth Street which appears to be between Manning and Locust one block from Spruce. Square footage listed as 7,332. Is this the cemetery referred to as St. Andrews (now non-sectarian)? Property next to this cemetery appears to be owned by the Department of the Interior. Looking for vault of the TAMS FAMILY especially Mary Brownlow Purviance Tams died 1830. Willing to pay for photographs.

In 1856 M'Elroys Philadelphia City Directory, St. Andrews Church listed under Protestant Espiscopal as located 8th Street at Spruce. This appears to be location of the Pennsylvania Hospital system. Can anyone confirm that the building is no longer there and has been built over?

This St. Andrews has nothing to do with the Russian Church at 5th and Fairmont which was not established until 1897 and is in different location.

MaryFrances Flournoy

Hello Anne,

In the last year I found online a photo of a soup plate made by Samson Tams in Philadelphia in 1723. He was the younger brother of my great great grandfather William Tams who came to America in 1720, settled in North Carolina, married Mary Brownlow Purviance, had one son named William Henry Tams. Apparently, he then moved his family to Philadelphia and became a pottery merchant. I believe this makes us cousins.

Hello Lynn,
I am not sure how to reply to your query. Let me begin this way.
According to a notation in "Gleanings of Virginia History" by William Fletcher Boogher
"William Tams, born March 13, 1794, was a native of Burslem, England; migrated to America in 1820; settled in North Carolina, where he married, in 1824, Mary Brownlow Purviance, of Fayetteville, a granddaughter of Col. William Purviance........His only living child, William Henry Tams, born 1824, at Fayetteville, North Carolina was a Master of Arts of Princeton College before he reached his nineteenth year; and after graduating in law at the University of Virginia, settled in Rockingham county, VA where he married Marie Antoinette Smith, daughter of the distinguished jurist Judge Daniel Smith"

William Henry Tams was my great grandfather, his son Weightman Hanson Tams was my mother's father. Her name was Alice Conway Tams. There were cousins of hers that married - one had no children and the other produced two sons neither of whom ever married. So that ended the Tams line as far as we have been able to determine. Recently I was told that when William Tams was widowed in 1830, he remarried in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I am seeking information about that marriage and the possibility of other kin through that marriage.
Let me know what else I might be able to help with - if anything.

William Tams, the son of Michael Tams and Sarah Wildblood, was born March 13, 1894 was a native of Burslem, Staffordshire, England. He immigrated to America in 1820; settled in North Carolina, where he married Mary Brownlow Purviance of Fayetteville, a granddaughter of Col. William Purviance. They produced children, William Henry Tams, born in December 1824 in Fayetteville, NC and a daughter, Mary Caroline who was born in Philadelphia, PA. She died when she was only 13 months old and is buried with her parents in St Andrews Church (now a Greek Orthodox church). Mary B. Tams died in Philadelphia in May 1830 at the age of 28. William died in April 1864 at the age of 70. I have a copy of his obituary and his death certificate.

There was a Sampson Tams who came to the US from Burslem,England in the early 1800's. He was the brother of my great great grandfather, William Tams. They had a pottery in Philadelphia, PA. I have a picture of a soup bowl that is marked S. Tams, Philadelphia 1823. I know there is a burial place for a Margaret Tams at St. Andrews Church in Philadelphia.

The man's name you are listing here is William Henry Tams, the father of William Purviance Tams, my great uncle. William Henry Tams was the only son of William Tams and Mary Brownlow Purviance. Digging a bit into Google listing the name William Henry Tams, who died in August 1873 in Rawley (not Raleigh)Springs, which is in Rockingham County not far from Harrisonburg, VA. To date, I have not found an obit such as you describe.

Thanks for your response. According to my family records Sampson's parents were Michael Tams and Sarah Wildblood. Sampson was born in Straffordshire in 1793 or 1795 and in 1824 married Anne Hennessey Deas; they are my great-great grandparents.

The Margaret Tams who is buried in Philadelphia is probably their oldest daughter and first born, my great-grandmother; she was born there in 1826, but died in New York. I have two photographs of her, one as a very young woman, one as a very old one.

I didn't know about the pottery; good information, the dated bowl helps establish when Sampson came to America (perhaps with his brother William).
