Re: Interested to find ancestors--TAN family from Indonesia

Hi Adreinne;

I am sorry that I don't see an apparent connection between our families. At least not as for now; you never know with genealogy! We might be distance cousins.

I did not see your message until just now, while visiting the LDS library in Utah! My apology for the late reply.

I assume you have looked at the LDS library search for records for Surabaya. LDS have extensive records for Indonesia, and you can order the micorfilm to be delivered to a local LDS facility for a nominal fee. I have found key birth records for my grandfather through records from Padang through this process.

My father, Tan Tjien Lien and I were born in Semarang. I see you have the same consternation as I do about having the name-change. My father indonesian name is Tantosubroto. It is sad that we're losing our Chinese heritage.

Good luck on your search

Any chance there is a connection to this Tan family?
Khing Ing Tan b. 1922 Surabaya, Indonesia
m. Kiem Lian Tjoa b. 1938 Bangil, Indonesia
children:
An Nio Tan
Tiang-Bie Tan m.
Re: Interested to find ancestors but don't know where to start.

Angelina,

I assume you have ask your relatives, and record as much history as possible e.g. bring a voice recorders to family gatherings, write letters to distance relatives, etc. I myself was from Semarang, Indonesia.

If you are asking from an ousider (like this posting), to start with, it would be good to supply as much details as possible about yourself and your parents: Birth places, dates, DOD, last location. This way you could at least start a possible trend for those who are interested.

As you may know, Tan is a very common Chinese name in SE Asia, so if you are looking for leads in this site (which is predominantly for western hemisphere, esp. USA), you will probably be disappointed. If you are indeed from Asia, many old family tombs has their ancestory listing at their grave sites -- it is worth a try to go back to your native village. That is one of my dreams to do that.

And the most important part -- have fun doing the search. Good luck!
