I have just read your details concerning your Tankard family originally cam from Halifax.
I was a Tankard, whose grandfather's family came from West Riding in the late 1890's. My grandfather's mother was a Tempest, and father was a Tankard, he himself was born in Sunderland in 1903 (Donald William). I clearly remember him talking about 'cousin Harry' who had been a headmaster at a school in Halifax. Do you know anything about this section of the family? Amanda Evans (nee Tankard)

Jane Tankard in Bradford

My grandmother was Jane Tankard Rochfort - the daughter of Miles Tankard and Emily (nee Hogg) Rochfort. She was born in Bradford in 1891. Miles Tankard Rochfort was the son of Elizabeth Rochfort and he was born around 1855, also in Bradford.
Elizabeth Rochfort appears in the 1841 and 1851 census as the daughter of Jane and Benjamin Tankard and I deduce that they were both born in 1816.
I am interested in Jane, wife of Benjamin as I again find her in the 1861 census as a 72 year old widow but living on "income from property" at 10 Landsdowne Place in Bradford Elizabeth Rochfort is still living with her. Coincidentally, there is a Amelia Tankard living at 8 Landsdowne Place - also a widow of 50. It cannot be coincidence and I presume some relationship.
If anyone can shed some light on Jane and Amelia I would really appreciate it.
Also any information on Elizabeth Rochfort would be welcome. In the 1841 census she is seen in the household of her mother and father with sons Benjamin and George and is, presumably, married - possibly to a Walter Rochfort. In the 1861 census she is still living with her mother and Miles Tankard and brother Walter are also there.

Dear Hannah,
Interesting to see your message. In fact, Hannah was a reasonably common name in our branch of the family. My mother was Hannah (although only a Tankard by marriage, of course), I had an Aunt Hannah and my great-grandmother on my father's side was also Hannah (married to a Robert Tankard of Bolton). It is just possible that we are part of the same family as I believe there is some connection with Bradford several generations ago, although I have not been able to trace it back beyond Robert Tankard.

Best wishes

Alan Tankard

Stilllooking for information on Joshua Tankard. I have a Joshua Tankard born 1720 in London, father was rober son of robert born Ireland. My ancsestor was Joshua Tankard who married Dorothy Smithers in Kellington, Yorkshire 15 Dec 1754. I don't know if my ancestor is the Joshua of London or not but the London Joshua is the only Joshua I can find in the right time frame. The family has been in the Birken, Chapel Huddlesey area of Yorkshire since the late 1700s. My great grandmother Phoebe Tankard was born at Birken in 1809 and Married Joseph Plowman in Hull. They emigrated to the USA in 1829.

Dear Susie,
Once again, I'm afraid I can't help you very much with your search. I have no relevant photos, and have no idea of Eunice and Constance's married names.
However, I can add that Joseph's wife was Susannah Rigby. Unfortunately, I think the 1846 Joseph you mentioned is too early. He would have been 70 when Hannah was born, and about 105 when I knew him in Devon! The Joseph in the records, however, might have been the father of our Joseph. I reckon we should be looking for someone born around 1880, give or take ten yeasrs.
If it would be more convenient to communicate by e-mail from now on, I'm at: alantankard@libero.it

Kind regards

Alan

Dear Alan - thank you for contacting me with so much information. It is a real breakthrough for us. The only thing still missing is a photograph of Hannah. I don't suppose that you have any of your parents wedding photographs that Hannah was a witness at do you? She would have been 17 when your parents married. If you let me have your e-mail address I will send through the family tree. Also had another e-mail today from someone claiming they have access to the 1881 census and Grandad Joseph is on it born in 1846. Does that sound reasonable? Also do you recall the married names of either Eunice or Constance?? Hope to hear from you again - I really didn't think anything would come back from this entry on the web, so it just shows - it's always worth a try. - Kind regards and thanks again - Susie

Hello Alan,
Thanks for your message. The generation of Tankards you were asking about would have been that of my grandfather Thomas. His father was William Tankard born in 1846 in Birch, which is now part of Heywood, near Rochdale. He had one brother, Thomas. His mother, Betty Tankard (unmarried) had at least four brothers who mainly born in this area, although two were born in Yorkshire. It's possible that your ancestor was a son or grandson of one of these brothers. I'm afraid I have no records of a Joseph other than my great, great grandfather who was born in Bradford in 1770/1. Sorry this is not much help. I'm trying to get my family tree on-line, but I must be doing something wrong. I'll keep trying - see if you can find it, then you'll have all the information I have up to now.
Regards
Lesley

Dear Lesley,

I saw your message and wondered if there might be a connection between your branch of the family and mine, since yours moved from Yorkshire to Lancashire. My grandfather was Joseph Tankard, and would have been born I suppose around 1880 +/- ten years. By 1900, he was living in Bolton and married to Susannah Rigby. They subsequently had at least 5 children: Bob, Harry, Fred, Frank and Hannah, all born between about 1900 and 1916. Any information would be gratefully received.

Best wishes

Alan Tankard

I am trying to trace anyone in the Bolton area, who may have any recollections of my Grandmother, or her family. The facts are as follows:

She was born in 1916, and named Hannah Tankard. She gave birth to my father in August 1935, in Cyril Street, Bolton, aged only 19. The following month, 23 September 1935, she married my grandfather, Alfred Robinson, who was a professional footballer, playing for Bolton Wanderers. At the time she lived with her family in Cemetry Road, Bolton. The witnesses at the wedding were Fred and Hannah Tankard (I beleive possibly her mother and brother). Her father was Joseph Tankard, and he was a Leather Worker.

Unfortunately, she died in the following year (1936) aged only 20. My father was then raised by his paternal grandparents in the North East, and all contact with his maternal family was lost, as he was only one year old when his mother died.

My father vaguely recollects cousins being mentioned named Eunice and Constance, and also possibly a Uncle Harry that was in the Police Force. He thinks there may also be a connection with Birkenhead.

We would dearly like some information about Hannah Robinson (nee Tankard), and specifically would like to trace a photograph of her, as my father has no idea what his mother looked like. If you could help, I would be extremely grateful.

In your "Tankard Family" research, have you come across any info. That might be related to the following;

I am from a lineage of Tankard's it has been hard to trace, as for some reason info. seems to be a scarcity.

My Grandfather was a William Tankard Bell (b. 23/Oct/1866, d. 18/Aug/1945), however his original name in Edinburgh, Edinburgh Parish, Midlothian, Scotland was William Bell Tankard. His father and mother were William Tankard (b. abt. 1845, d. abt. 1872) Eliza Bell. His sisters were Sarah Jane Scott Tankard and Catherine Duncan Tankard. William Tankard Bell came to Canada; a short time in Montreal, then to Watford, Ontario (about 1883/84) and finally, until his death lived in Port Stanley, Ontario.

William Tankard Sr.'s parents were William (John) Tankard and Sarah Scott. Sarah Scott eventually was married a 2nd time to a Joseph Jarvie. Sarah Scott's parents were John Scott Ann Gardner. Sarah Joseph Jarvie had a son John. John Jarvie eventually married Eliza Bell when William Tankard died.

Eliza Bell was the daughter of William (John??) Bell Mary Ann Chisholm.

William (John) Tankard was the son of Mr. Tankard and an Elizabeth Ritchie.

Does any of this line up with your research ?? Have you ever came across the surname Tankard or any of the Bell's connected to my description?? or any other connection??

Any insights are much appreciated.

Thank You!!
My great great great grandfather was Joshua Tankard born between 1728-1730. Lived in Kellington, Yorkshire and family later lived in Yorkshire. I have been trying to find a birth record for him, but with no luck. The only Joshua I have found was son of Robert Tankard and born in London. The age was somewhat differant than what I had. The Tankard name was in this area of Yorkshire at the tine of Joshas birth. I thought I would check and see if you had a Joshua who fit. Hope to hear from you. Paul

Dillington Tankard, London--1650s-1690s

I am looking for further information on Dillington Tankard, who lived in London from at least 1655 to at least 1693. He was described variously as a silkman or a dyer. He had three marriages.

By his first wife, Anne (last name unknown; d. 1659), he had: Dillington (1656-57), Sarah (1657-1659/60), and Anne (b. 1659).

By his second wife, also Anne (last name unknown; d. 1667), he had: Dillington (b. 1661), Eleanor (1663-1663), Eleanor (b. 1664), and John (b. 1666).

By his third wife, Jane Bridger, whom he married in 1668, he had: Henry (d. 1679).

His children were all christened at St. Lawrence Jewry, and his first two wives and his children who died as infants were all also buried there. His third wife was buried at St. Mary Aldermary; Dillington apparently survived her.

It appears that Dillington's daughter Eleanor married, in 1682, one William Elliot, at St. James, Duke's Place. I have a theory as to the identity of this William Elliot, but have been unable to confirm it.

It also appears that his son Dillington married a woman named Dorothy, by whom he had two daughters: Dorothy (b. 1684) and Hannah (b. 1690). The younger Dillington Tankard may have made a voyage to New England in 1680 on the ship Dolphin.

I am particularly interested in any connection to the Tankard family of Northampton County on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, but any help or information you may be able to provide would be most appreciated.

Jeff Pilchard
San Francisco, CA
Dear Lenore,
I saw your message a couple a months ago but have been waiting information from my mother. My great-grandmother's name was Fannie Tankards. Her siblings were Earl, Willie, Arthur, Georgia, Mamie, Marawa and Sarah. Have you been able to get any information on the Tankards?
