Tannehill yDNA project information

Genetic genealogy continues to play an ever more important role in determining familial relationships. The tiny portion of the entire DNA molecule – called yDNA – is passed from father to son nearly unchanged for many generations. This means that all male Tannehill/Tannahills who are descended from a common ancestor would have the same yDNA pattern. And all male Tann*hills who are descended from a different Tann*hill ancestor would also match each other but NOT match the descendants of the first one. And so forth . . . .

Genetic genealogy in conjunction with traditional paper genealogy is a very powerful tool.

Although the testing seems quite expensive it can give results not gotten any other way. I know that I broke through a 30-year brick wall with the test.

From now until the last day of 2009 the leading company that does surname-yDNA studies is having special pricing. We would welcome you or your male Tann*hill relative into the study.

You can go to the website www.ftdna.com or you can write me for details. I am happy to help in any way that I can. (I am a volunteer for the Tann*hill surname project and do not get paid a single penny for enrolling you!)

Jody McKenney Thomson
Jmthomson at gmail . com
Janet,
My name is Lucy Richardson. I am a Tannahill Descendant. I am trying to find out how we got here from Scottland and when. Does your book or your research tell you the answer to this? I have our tree as far back as Magruder Tannahill born 1-25-1808 but no further. some of this information seems to be conflicting with others on the message boards but I haven't been able to back it up. I can't find the census records for Kansas.

My Grandmother was Lucy Elizabeth Tannahill and my father is the (unk) MCCOY on the file I found online. His name was Eddie Merle he was born 12-7-1921 and died 4-29-1994

I would appreciate any information you could provide.

I do hope your illness is better now than it was in 2002. I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes as well, but I hasve been lucky enough to keep it under control with diet. And I thank God for that cause that medication was going to kill me. My husband is taking insulin now and feeling better but he's gained weight. Well, actually he lost weight just before taking the insulin. He'd lost 60 lbs and has gained back 30. It's not fun being sick. As far as your fibermyalgia, I hope that hasn't gotten too bad. I don't know much about that disease other than it is really painful. Hopefully you are doing better.

Lucy Richardson
More about genetic genealogy and how it can help you!

FTDNA is continuing a variation of the special summer pricing for three of their DNA testing kits. The prices are good through the month of July.

So if you are interested - or know someone who is - check it out. I am happy to answer any questions you might have but I am not free to post prices on this website.

Genetic genealogy is an increasingly valuable addition to traditional paper research to be able to identify your precise family. Once you have found others that share your genetic pattern, you can zero in on that family to find just where your family fit into the picture.

If you are interested or want more information please contact me!

Kinda wierd huh?
I'm John Patrick Tannehill, Jr. Age 14, youngest son of the first John Tannehill who posted 7 years ago. He is now almost 41 (he said he was 34 if that clears up any confusion). I'm shocked that there are so many family members I don't know about... My dad will be surprized to hear about this.

Is Elizabeth A. Tannehill the daughter of Ninian in Logan, KY?

Elizabeth A. Tanniehill (Tannehill) b. Abt 1823 is my g.g.grandmother. I have little information on her other than her marriage to Robert W. Cundiff on 12 January 1846 in Logan county, KY and that she died about 1906, also in Logan County, KY.

There is a N. Tannehill in the 1840 Kentucky Census, who lists himself, a wife and 3 girls, one in each age catagory, ages 10-30. Elizabeth would have been about 17 then and I wondered if anyone on this board knows of this N. Tannehill and if he had a daughter named Elizabeth or Ann? It is possible his name is Ninian Tannehill.

Records have her marrying Robert W. Cundiff on Jan 12, 1846 in Logan, KY. And, they had 4 children, Frances W.; Armilda Tanniehill; Wilson M. (Bud) and Robert E...I follow Robert E. Cundiff's line.

Can someone help me out? Elizabeth has been my brick wall for ages.

Thanks so much! Thelma Sorenson

I think there is some confusion here. Mary Buntin md Thomas Tannahill 21 Jul 1730 in Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland. The "little Tommy Tannahill" legend IS just that... Thomas and Mary Buntin are the ancestors of the Paisley branch of the Tannahill family, but weren't yet born in the 1650s!

Hello all I am new to the boards and have been reading a lot of the posts. I have been interested in my family history for many years now. Though I have always wondered if stories of my hertiage are true. So here it goes with what I know of my Familys history.

Three brothers were cast out of Scottland because they were accused of Piracy and they had the choise to die or be shipped to the americas. They chose to be shipped to the Americas and on the way there one of the tree brothers died. Of the two bothers that made it over here, one married into the Indians one into "white" people. From there I am a disendant from the Brother that married into the "white" people. My direct family has come into contact with members of the Family from the Indian side and they too have heard the same story.

If anyone out there knows anything of this story or any info that could be helpful please let me know. My email is cmspagans@yahoo.com

Thank You

Re: Rebecca Elizabeth "Becky" Tannehill of Missouri, b. ca. 1845

The 1880 census (FamilySearch.org) has a Rebecca Holland living in Jonesburg, Montgomery, MO. She was b abt 1839/40 and had two daughters, Rebecca E (b abt 1860) and Caddie (b abt 1863). The census indicated that she was widowed.

The Office of the Missouri Secretary of State has a website which includes a file of death records. I have pulled up a death record for a Rebecca Holland who died 9 Mar 1908 at the age of 70 in St Louis. This might be the Rebecca Holland you are seeking.

I have also pulled up a copy of a death certificate for a Rebecca E Holland who died in St Louis on 21 Oct 1930. It lists her father as Ferdanand Holland who was b in St Louis, and her mother as Rebecca E Tannehill (at least the last name resembles Tannehill) who was born in Maryland. Coincidently, the name of the informant is Carlton H Randolph. I don't know if he is related.

I wasn't able to find a death certificate for Caddie. It is possible that she married and I don't have a name of a spouse.

I hope that this information is useful.

Mary Brewer

I have 3 brothers, children of Thomas Tannahill:

Thomas Tannehill: 1616– (don't know who he married)
Eduard Tannehill: 1618–1662 (married Magdalene)
William Tannehill: 1620–1667 (married Alice Duncan - not positive about surname)

If your story holds true, then likely it was Thomas b. 1616 who did not make it to America. Of the remaining brothers, Eduard and William, do you know which allegedly married an Indian?

This would possibly have been, William I believe he was married twice on the death of his first wife, the William I have, married Mary Payne, of which there are 4 Mary Paynes on the Cherokee role(Dawes Commission) you'd need to know what the middle initial was to have the correct Mary Payne, or at least who her parents were. If you could provide that I might possibly be able to find which Mary Payne was the Cherokee-HOWEVER, since William is commom this MIGHT be a different William, but MY William was married to a Cherokee, since I am of that line also. Feel free to contact me.

Hi, I am a Tannehill descendant and am trying to unscramble some of the relationships. I am descended from James Tannehill of Abbeville, SC. He was related to Andrew but was not a brother. I have his descendants in their proper order and would like to do the same with Andrew P but I need lots of help. What I know: Son of Andrew T., b: 1803 in Franklin Co., GA. m: 1st unknown, 2nd Susannah Duncan. Ch. by #1: Wilkins, Celia, & Andrew J.; Ch. by Susannah: Harriet, Rice (pronounced Reece), Diana, Jesse, James, John, Sarah, and Ninian B. Was the above James your gg-father, James Perry? I believe this is surely the same family. Can you verify or repudiate any of the above information? Please contact me via my email, red-rivermavsfan@att.net.

Hi, I have been researching Tannehills for more than 10 years now and believe you may be looking in the wrong family of Tannehills. I am pretty sure that Andrew J. was Andrew Jackson, son of James who was born in Maryland but raised in Abbeville, S.C.
Contact me At red-rivermavsfan@att.net. We can share info.

William Tannehill was my gggrandfather's brother. He was born in Abbeville SC, not NC, in 1794.He married Martha Thurmond in SC about 1815. They lived Jefferson County, Alabama. I'm surprised he wasn't buried at Bucksville Cemetery, near Tuscaloosa. His mother and a brother are buried there. William died in a steamboat accident about 1846. I know of no relationship between him and the lady in question but they were both widowed, Martha having died about 1840. Family history tells us that William was returning from a business trip to New Orleans when a boiler on the steamboat exploded. Sorry, that's all I know.
