George Tapscott of Buckingham Co Virginia

The Tapscott Board has, in the past, posted conclusions about the wives of George Tapscott Sr. (abt 1749 to abt 1789) of Lancaster, Northumberland, and Buckingham counties, Virginia, son of James, son of Henry the Immigrant. Some of these conclusions, including mine, have been wrong or doubtful, particularly about the supposed wives, Elizabeth James and Sarah Hill. Below is a passage updating our knowledge of George's marriages from the second edition of my book (still in writing and subject to change). Footnotes have been eliminated.

George was married at least twice. George’s first wife appears to have been a Conway, for on 20 Nov 1778 the Northumberland County estate of Samuel Conway, who died intestate, was divided among four men said to be husbands of Samuel’s sisters—William Haynie (Northumberland County license 13 Nov 1769 to marry Lucy Conway, sister of Samuel), William Rice (married Catherine Conway on 5 Mar 1772 in Northumberland County), John Booth, and George Tapscott. From this division, George received 100 acres located in the Parish of St. Stephens and adjacent to land owned by his uncle Capt. Henry Tapscott. A month later, on 21 December 1779, George sold the property to John Booth, one of the other heirs. Since the sale record did not give his wife’s name, as required by law, George was widowed by this time.

The next wife is often said to be Elizabeth James due to an error in reading a list of Lancaster County marriage bonds given by William Armstrong Crozier. In Crozier's book, the bond for Tapscott Oliver (given incorrectly as “Oliver Tapscott”) and Winifred Lunsford (21 Mar 1784) is listed immediately above that for George Carter and Elizabeth James (16 Nov 1780). Somehow, the bottom entry has been read incorrectly as “George Tapscott and Elizabeth James,” and the error has been promulgated among researchers. The original bond shows conclusively that Elizabeth James was to be married to George Carter, not George Tapscott.

It is possible that one of George’s wives was a Hill. Among the papers of George Tapscott’s great-grandson George Allen Tapscott are four notebooks, with a few genealogical notes. One note states, “Geo. Tapscott it is Said married a Hill.” Although some researchers have accepted this and have assumed a given name of “Sarah” (from the name of one of George Tapscott’s daughters), the evidence is suspect. George Allen may have confused the first George Tapscott with a grandson who had the same name. That grandson, George H. Tapscott, the son of another James Tapscott, James who married Martha Woodward Burgess, married a Sarah Hill. It should be noted, however, that one of the first George Tapscott’s children, William H. Tapscott, and a grandson, John H. Tapscott, may have had middle names of “Hill.” William H. Tapscott, who was born in 1783 or, much more likely, 1784, would have been a child of George’s (presumably) last marriage.

Re: Looking for info. Frank A Tapscott

Frank J. Tapscott (his initial appears to be “J” rather than A) was the son of George Nicholas and Ann E. (Scruggs) Tapscott, great grandson of George and Mildred V. (Cobbs) Tapscott, GG grandson of George Tapscott Sr., and GGG grandson of James Tapscott, one of three sons of Henry the Immigrant, the first Tapscott of Virginia. Frank, one of nine children of George Nicholas Tapscott, was married twice. His first wife was Nannie Howell and his second wife was Lizzie Ayres. Lizzie is buried in Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery, Buckingham Co, Virginia and I have a photo of her grave, which I have visited. I am uncertain where Frank is buried.

I have no information about Frank’s illegitimate son George D. Green and would like to learn more about him. The Tapscotts of Buckingham County were white; however, I believe that your George D. Green was a Tapscott descendent of mixed race, probably an offspring of the Green family, a group of Blacks living with William Wallace Tapscott, who resided next door to George Nicholas and Ann Tapscott and their son Frank J. in Buckingham County in 1870. William Wallace Tapscott was Frank’s second cousin. One of Frank’s uncles, Thomas Cobbs Tapscott and his second cousin William Wallace Tapscott, both of Buckingham County, are known to have had partially Black descendants out of wedlock. This is an area of great interest to me. I am particularly interested in what evidence you have for George D. Green’s parentage. Please don’t hesitate to email me direct at retapscott@speakeasy.net.

Bob Tapscott

Frank was born around 1866 in Buckingham county and died in 1959. Can anyone provide details, pictures or whatever about this man. His son George D. Green was born in 1890. He obviously did not marry George's mother. He later married Nannie Howell. I am a rookie on this ancestry search stuff.

I think it is that the Tapscott's are wanderers and have trouble staying settled in one place for very long. My grandfather brought his family to Australia from Devon after the 2nd world war. He was from a family of builders, but when I went to Lympstone, Devon to stay with my extended family I found that they also use to be boat builders and sailors. Always traveling on the mind.... Even now my Australian family has spread far and wide across the world.

William Tapscott of Daviess County, Kentucky

I am looking for good primary sources providing information on William Tapscott who appears in the 1820 Daviess County Kentucky Census with five girls, one boy, his wife (presumably) and one other adult male. The 1830 Census is for the household of Nancy Tapscott, presumably the widow of William, with, again, five girls and one boy. I have information on the marriages of the five girls. I would like to obtain a transcription of William's will and/or a reliable reference to the Daviesss County Will Book, page no., etc. Any other information, particularly on William's origins, would be appreciated.

Bob Tapscott

It appears to be a common assumption that William Tapscott, son of Henry of Caswell, married a Winifred Cobb and had five children: Henry, William Stewart, George Rice, Richard, and Winifred. (The family was primarily in Barren County and Green County, Kentucky.) I have never, however, seen a primary (or even a good secondary) source either for the marriage to Winifred or for the five children named. Does anyone have a source?

Thanks,

Bob Tapscott

The following is a transcription of a will from the loose wills of Hamshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia) for Chichester Tapscott, brother of Newton and Baker Tapscott. Like the will of his brother (Newton) Chichester's will provides little information about his immediate family. He does, however, use the word "children" though we know of only one child of Chichester, a daughter Anna Chichester Tapscott.

Bob Tapscott

Will of Chichester Tapscott

In the name of God Amen I Chichester Tapscott of the County of Hampshire being in a low state of health but of sound and disposing mind and memory do make this my last will and testament-
In the first place I will and direct that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid by my Executors herein after named and I do hereby for the purposes aforesaid authorize my said Executors to sell at public or private sale the whole or any part of my estate real or personal and should my Executors think it most adviseable for the interest of my beloved wife and children to sell the whole of my real estate and vest the proceeds thereof after paying my debts, in other property I do hereby authorize and empower them to do so.
Secondly I do hereby devise and bequeath all the residue of my estate, after the payment of my debts, whether the same shall remain in the shape of real estate or shall be converted by my executors into any other description of property, including also my personal property that I am now possessed of, to my beloved wife, Jane, for and during her life, and after death to my children.
I desire my executors to give my children as liberal education as my estate will justify and I do now Commit my children to Almighty God with a firm hope that he will so guide and direct them through life, that they may leave the world in triumph and enter into joyful eternity.
I give and devise to my brother Baker Tapscott an article of African manufacture presented to me by the reverend Wm Hill and my razors and shaving apparatus – To my friend John B. White my sword cane – To my friend William C Woodrow my Watch seal now in his possession as testimonials of my respect and esteem for them. I also devise to my beloved wife Jane my gold watch chain, in addition to the bequests heretofore made to her, as an evidence of my pure and devoted love and affection for her and I request my Exors to give to Mrs Hill and Mrs Tidball acds [?] a ring as tokens of my affection for them
And Lastly I Do hereby appoint my friends John B. They are ones who have done a lot of research on the Tapscott name. We have been out to the cemetary where Robert and his wife, Lucy, are buried, and searched the Clarke County records, as well as many other records, but to no avail. Certainly, if something comes up, we are happy to share. I just want to wish you happy hunting. The rumor is that Robert Francis was "disinherited" (reason unknown) and that his father, whoever that was, decreed that his name be "erased" from the family. If that is the case, he certainly did a good job for those of us trying to find proof of Robert's parentage. If you would like more information, contact my sister, Joyce, at shortjf@ispwest.com.

I am not a direct descendent (John Chichester Tapscott is a cousin); however, I have a lot of interest in this branch, in particular owing to their connection with Edgehill Plantation. As you undoubtedly know, John and his brother Albin were children of William Chichester Tapscott and Martha Victoria Norwood of Baltimore. However, you have the wife of John Chichester Tapscott as Mary Susan Scott. I have John's wife as Cornelia Avalon McCarty. She and John are buried in White Chapel Cemetery, Lancaster County, Virginia (along with her parents and John's mother, Martha Victoria). I have a lot more (but there are a large number of questions). I will contact you by email.

James Tapscott the Physician

A James Tapscott who studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh in the 1760s[1] has been widely accepted to be James the son of Capt. Henry of Lancaster County, Virginia. This belief has been strengthened by the fact that the latter James was Lancaster Coroner. But this appointed position required no medical training. Equally important in justifying this conclusion is a William and Mary Quarterly article, dating from 1911 and providing no source, that claims James the medical student to be a Virginian.[2] A more reliable and more recent article, however, shows that the James who studied in Edinburgh was from Philadelphia, not Virginia.[3] James Tapscott of Philadelphia is first found at a meeting of the Philadelphia Baptist Association on 22 October 1747, when James the son of Capt. Henry was but an infant.[4] James of Philadelphia is later seen as a physician in a 1756 tax list for Philadelphia,[5] where he may have been practicing without a medical degree (not a requirement at the time). He obtained his MD degree from Edinburgh in 1765.

Conclusion: James, son of Capt. Henry, did not attend Edinburgh.

1. “Education in Colonial Virginia: Part IV, The Higher Education,” William and Mary Quarterly, Ser. 1, Vol. 6, No. 3, 1898, pp. 171-187.

2. “The Medical Men of Virginia,” William and Mary Quarterly, Ser. 1, Vol. 19, No. 3, 1911, pp. 145-162.

3.

During a recent visit to the Library of Virginia in Richmond, I copied some birth and death announcements involving Tapscotts from original or microfilm of some old Virginia newspapers. The following are verbatim transcriptions. Capitalization, spelling, and punctuation are shown exactly as printed. In two announcements, "…" shows omission of unimportant material (e.g., flowery speech). In all other cases, complete announcements are shown. Comments in brackets are mine. Otherwise there are no changes. If there is any question, I can provide information on where these various Tapscotts fit into the descendants of Henry the Immigrant and Ann.

1.
George Tapscott of Buckingham County, Virginia

Most Tapscott histories give the place of death of George Tapscott, husband of Mildred Cobbs and son of the first George Tapscott of Virginia, as Fallsburg, Kentucky. Considerable research, however, shows no evidence that George (or any other Tapscott of that era) was ever in Fallsburg, Kentucky or even in Lawrence County, where the town is found. The error apparently arises from a 14 April 1949 letter written by Clayton Tapscott, GG grandson of the first George (copy in files of Robert Tapscott). In that letter, Clayton states "George Tapscott married Cobbs Killed at Fallsburg." The letter has had broad circulation. If someone has a source other than this, please let us know.

Though the source is highly questionable, it is quite possible that George did indeed die at a Fallsburg. In Buckingham County, where George lived, the name "Fallsburg" has been given to (1) a creek that flows into the James River from the south a mile upstream from the Warren Ferry site, (2) a 19th-century tavern near Warren Ferry, and (3) at one time, the area around the ferry. (The latter two pieces of information were provided to me by Alan Bruns, author of Howardsville Some History). All of these sites are within three miles, at most, of the fork in Rock Island Creek, where the early Buckingham Co. Tapscotts, including George, owned land. What is meant by "killed" in the Clayton letter is unknown, but George may very well died at Fallsburg -- Fallsburg in Buckingham County! Now, can anyone explain "killed"?

Where did you get this?

Robert Francis Tapscott Researchers:
I just returned from a research trip to Virginia, part of which was spent on researching Robert Francis Tapscott, in particular to find a possible connection to Baker Tapscott. I found no smoking gun, but I am still going through a lot of records and I will post important findings as they come up.

Several people have thought that full obituaries (rather than what were thought to be abstracts from the Bernard J. I have now examined the original newspapers in the archives at the Library of Virginia for two Baker Tapscott obituaries. Unfortunately, they are almost identical to the "abstracts" which are available on the internet. I have now examined the original newspapers in the archives at the Library of Virginia for two Baker Tapscott obituaries. Unfortunately, they are almost identical to the "abstracts" which are available on the internet. Nevertheless, the verbatim transcriptions are shown below:

Staunton Spectator, and General Advertiser
Staunton, Virginia
Thursday, May 17, 1838, p. 3, c. 2

OBITUARY
On Friday the 27th ult [ultimo mense: last month], at Shepherdstown, Mr. Baker Tapscott, long a respectable merchant of that place.

Virginia Free Press
Charles Town, Virginia/West Virginia
Thursday, May 3, 1838, p. 3, c. 3

DIED
On Friday last, at Shepherdstown, Mr. Baker Tapscott, long a respectable merchant of that place.

Newton Tapscott

I have found a will for Newton Tapscott, son of James Tapscott (son of Capt. Henry) and Susan Howard Baker, among loose wills in the Hampshire County, Virginia/West Virginia, Courthouse. Since there is considerable interest in this family (particularly, Baker, Newton, and Chichester, who might be connected with Robert Francis Tapscott), I am posting my transcription at the bottom with some comments in brackets.

The will fixes Newton’s Tapscott’s death as occurring between 17 Jan 1826, when the will was written, and 19 Jun 1826, when it was proved. I have, however, a copy of an account of Newton’s estate following his death showing the earliest entry on 1 Apr 1826, which means he died before that date. Thus Newton Tapscott died in January, February, or March of 1826.

We know of only one child by Newton, Susan K. Tapscott, who was born around the time of her father’s death; however, a boy appears in the Newton Tapscott household in the 1820 Census for Romney, Hampshire Co. Unfortunately, Newton’s will gives no information about children and does not even name Newton’s wife (it would have been Louisa W. nee Fairfax). Despite the lack of information, there are two things of interest.

First, Newton makes the very strange statement “In the Event of my death before I return from the Journey I am about to take.” What could this mean? Is he speaking metaphorically? Is he going somewhere for medical treatment? The Tapscotts born to James and Susan Howard (Baker) Tapscott were not physically fit. Newton died around age 25, Chichester around 28, Baker about 42, Louisa Alcinda about 30.

Second, Andrew Woodrow Dailey (also written Daily), one of the witnesses proving the will, appears to have had a sister Mary Ann Dailey (from a land bounty claim that I am still unraveling.). A Hampshire County Chancery Court of 3 May 1833 involves a suit including a Mary Ann Tapscott, heir of James Dailey. We do not know who Mary Ann Tapscott is, but there is evidence that Louisa W. Fairfax was not Newton’s first wife. Of course, Mary Ann could be related to Chichester since he lived in the same town as his brother.

I would appreciate comments.

Robert E. (Bob) Tapscott

[WILL]

I Newton Tapscott of the County of Hampshire and State of Virginia [now West Virginia] being of Sound mind and memory do Make and publish this my last will and Testament. First after the payment of all my Just debts, I leave and bequest unto my wife all my estate both real and personal. 2nd It is my desire and wish that my Brother-in-Law Jno B. White [John Baker White, who married Louisa Alcinda Tapscott, Newton’s sister, and whose mother Arabella Baker was the sister of Susanna Howard Baker, Newton’s mother, was both brother-in-law and first cousin to Newton Tapscott] and my Brother Chichester Tapscott be my executors. Therefore I do appoint them my executors and request that they manage my business to the best advantage. In the Event of my death before I return from the Journey I am about to take, It is my request that my Brother Baker Tapscott take upon him the management of my wife’s property in Jefferson County and If a Sale Could be made to advantage It is my desire, with her Consent, that it be made, and the Money Vested in Some Stock or Otherwise to the best advantage, So that she be able to Draw the Ints. [interest] twice a year. Majr [Major] Hickman Can give him all the information he may want both respecting her property in Jefferson and elsewhere. I wish my executors to Gratify the wishes of my wife in the purchase of any article she may want when my personal property is Sold. It is also my wish If I should never return that my brother Chichester accompany my wife upon a visit to my Sister Caroline [Susanna Caroline Tapscott was married to Judge Lucas Powell Thompson Sr. and living in Staunton, Virginia] that is if she would like to Spend a few months thus,
Given under my hand this 17th day of January 1826 – Newton Tapscott

Newton Tapscott Will
1826 June 19
Jus [judged?] to be in hand writing of testator by Jms. [this is clearly James, not John, but John Baker White was the executor and was living at the time] White & Adw Woodrow Daily [Andrew Woodrow Dailey was the grandson of Andrew Woodrow, a prominent early Hampshire County settler.]
Exers gave bond and [unclear] ordered
Recorded and [rest missing]

Re: Gus Tapscott

Thanks a lot.

On a related matter:

I have found only two wives for the first George Tapscott: a "Conway" (Division of Estate of Samuel Conway, 20 November 1778, Recorded 14 December 1778: Northumberland County, Virginia, Record Book 10, pp. 410-411) and Elizabeth James (William Armstrong Crozier, Virginia County Records, Vol. 4, Lancaster County, p. 56). I have never found a reliable source showing that George married a Sarah Hill. The only source I can find is a questionable note among the papers of George Allen Tapscott, great grandson of the first George, at the University of Virginia stating, “Geo. Tapscott it is Said married a Hill.” ("Sarah" as a first name seems to have been assumed from the fact that one of George's daughters was named "Sarah".) This evidence is highly suspect. George Allen Tapscott may have confused the first George Tapscott with a grandson who had the same name and who did marry a Sarah Hill (the sources for this are lengthy but are available from me on request). Of course George's son William H. Tapscott (and some other descendants) is said to have had a middle name of "Hill", but again I have found no primary source for this middle name though many primary soures are available for the middle initial "H."

Of particular importance is that William H. Tapscott, who was born in 1783 or 1784 (from his age, 65, in the Buckingham 1850 mortality schedule) was a son from the marriage of George and Elizabeth James (married 16 Nov 1780, Crozier, p. 56). Could Elizabeth James have been a Hill with "James" as a name from an earlier marriage?

In summary, I am looking for a reliable primary source or a contemporary secondary source showing that the first George Tapscott, son of James and grandson of Henry the Immigrant, did marry a Hill and/or that his son William had a middle name "Hill." I would be glad to discuss this further in this forum or by email: retapscott @ speakeasy.net.

Robert E. Tapscott

I have made no attempt to get an exact date of birth for Robert Clay Tapscott; however, he was born around 1885 according to the 1900 Census for Fairfax County, Virginia, where he appears with his mother and father (Henrietta and James). The date of 5 May 1857 (from an unconfirmed secondary source) for the birth of James Edward Tapscott, Robert's father, is in agreement with calculations from ages given in the 1860 and 1870 Censuses for Clarke County, Virginia.

Robert Clay Tapscott (caution, Robert had an uncle also named "Robert Clay Tapscott") was a son of James Edward (b. 5 May 1857 in Clarke Co Va, d. 16 Aug 1932) and Henrietta (unknown surname) Tapscott. James Edward, in turn, was one of seven children of Robert Francis (b 8 Mar 1817, Virginia; d 24 Jun 1874, Clarke Co Va, bur Old Chapel Cem) and Lucy Frances (Wood) Tapscott. Robert Clay and Violet (Amiss) Tapscott had three children: Juanita Virginia Tapscott (m Ercell Fairchild), Robert Howard Tapscott Sr (m Elizabeth Cecelia McNeill), and Edith Tapscott (m Alfred Crowe). This line is extremely unusual since, thus far, we have been unable to determine who Robert Francis Tapscott's parents were. It is, however, believed that he is descended from one of the three lines (Edney, Capt. Henry, James) of the original Henry Tapscott ("The Immigrant") of Lancaster Co Va. Considerable research is underway on Robert Francis Tapscott's roots.

Unfortunately, no. Further back, my great-grandfather William S. Tapscott born 1885 to Benjamin Franklin Tapscott b. 1856, both in Casey Co. Kentucky. Perhaps the Ohio branch also came from Kentucky? B.F. Tapscott had a son, George F. (half-brother to my William S.), and I don't have any more info on him. Also, B.F.'s father, William S. the 2nd (b. 1805 N.Carolina) had the following male children: James b. 1838, William Rice b.1844, Uriah Thomas b.1847, as well as B.F. So, if your Joseph can be traced to Kentucky or North Carolina, we may find the family connection through one of these siblings.

It seems unlikely that she could've been the Aunt Viola in question. We are undoubtably related, but we'll probably have to dig back a few generations to find the connection. Do you have information on Jerry Tapscott's father or grandfather and their locations?

Elizabeth Carr Childress (17 mar 1796 Nelson Co. - 3 Nov. 1864) and had (among 7 children) Pocohontus Caroline Tapscott (18 Nov 1832 Buckingham Co.,VA).

I have not found the name Pocohontus used in the Childress family nor the Johnston family (Mrs. Childress' maiden name) so it must have been in use in the Tapscott family of Buckingham Co., VA.

This is not my direct line, but I think William Hill Tapscott was son of George Tapscott and Sarah Hill who also had other sons. One of those other sons would be about the right age to have married Rosannah and had your Pocohontus.

I have no "proof" but can supply what I think is a logical source of "Gus" in your Tapscott line.
This is not my direct line and what I have is thin on dates.

George Tapscott married Sarah Hill and had William Hill Tapscott (1794-1849) who married Elizabeth Carr Childress (1796-1864)[my cousin] and had Mary Magdalene Tapscott (b. 1835) who married Gustavius Adolphus Wallace.

Mary's brother, Benjamin George Tapscott (1825-1868) married Charlotte Wilson Wallace and named a daughter Gustavia Adolpha Tapscott (b.1858).

Looks like "Gus" (short for Gustavius) came from the Wallace family connection.

Mary and Benjamin Tapscott were born in Buckingham Co., VA

Sarah Abraham Tapscott (Topscott?) b. c. 1837 VA

Sarah is said to have compiled a record of her Topscott (Tapscott?), Childress, Johnston and Waller family ancestry and connections around the year 1903. I would like ask if anyone has knows of a copy of this record?

She was living in Golansville, Caroline Co., VA circa 1903.

I will gladly share what I have with others who connect to Sarah and her family, as I have extensive data on her Johnston realtives, etc.

Sarah Abraham Tapscott was born about 1837, d/o William Hill Tapscott and Elizabeth Carr Childress who was d/o Benjamin Childress and Ann Key (Kay?) Johnston.

Just in case you do not have all this and in case it might be of use; (from various sources)

William Hill Tapscott (22 May 1794 - 17 Dec 1849) m.29 May 1823 to Elizabeth Carr Childress (17 Mar 1796 - 3 Nov 1864) and had:

Agnes Ann Elizabeth Hill Tapsoctt (b. 23 feb 1924)
m. David L. Baber
Issue: Agnes Cora Baber 1859
Albert Sidney Johnston Baber 1862
(worth noting "our" Johnston line is NOT related to the CSA General A. S. Johnston or J. E. Johnston)

Benjamin George Tapscott (b. 30 Oct 1825)
m. Charlotte Wilson Wallace
Issue: Kate Tapscott
William Wallace Tapscott
Lillian Roasalie Tapscott
Gustavia Adolpha Tapscott

Sophronia Eliza Tapscott (27 Aug 1827)
m. James Clifton Childress (probably her cousin, but there are more than one with this same name and not sure this one fits in)
Issue: Virginia Elizabeth Childress
Samuel Childress
James Clifton Childress
Hillizia Childress
Nancy Hammer Childress

William Henry Hill Tapscott (no dates and not all account include him)

Pocohontus Caroline Tapscott (18 Nov 1832)
m. William James Fontaine
Issue: America Clementine Fontaine

Mary Magdalene Tapscott (1 Apr 1835)
m. Gustavius Adolphus Wallace (brother or relative of to Charlotre Wilson Wallace above?)
Issue:Charles William Wallace
Margaret Ross Wallace

Sarah Abraham Tapscott (5 Nov 1836) (date from the death cert. you provided).

Much of this comes from a a Gnealogy of the Johnston Family by Virgil Johnsotn of Quincy, IL completed 1903. He had sold his printing business for a very good profit and spent the next two years traveling and gathering materials from relatives. He made a very good record of those living at the time who were descendents of Henry Johnston and Agnes Waller Johnston of Spotsylvania Co., VA. I have to admire his efforts made in a time when long distance phones calls were expensive and most researchers had to rely on postal mail or personal visits to court houses, realtives, etc.

His work on our "ancestry" however has later proven to be in error. He based it on what was available to him and made "assumoptions" that were not right. In his defense, one branch of the family withheld some vital information from him; including the Goodloe Family Bible and the Waller Family Prayer Book. Alas, that same branch is less than cooperative even to this day and other than some notes taken in the 1930's from the books in their possesion, we do not have access to them.

We know Henry's parent's were William Buford Johnston and Mary Goodloe (m. 21 Jul 1720 Middlesex Co., VA) and her family is fairly well known, but his Johnston ancestry is our "brickwall" at this time. Y0DNA results sho no exact matches but indicate a family line from the Aberdeen area odf Scotland; a big area with LOTS of Johnstons!

Thank you for that information.

An interesting turn of phrase for her occupation, "A Lady of Pleasure"

I assume that means she had independent means and NOT that she was in a very old "profession"
