Re: Tate from Washington DC

The first one Samuel G. Tate is my grandfather. The initial is just that, he didn't have a name for it.
Him and my grandmother had another child named Joseph who lives in Maryland he married a lady by the name of Betty.
My dad Sam Jr. married Minnie Hurst who was from WV also.
I am trying to find were my grandfather and grandmother are buried in DC. If you could email me personally I could give you a copy of a paper I was able to get out of my grandmothers bible, but it doesn't give info on her which is what I am really searching for. Here is all I have on my grandmother. Children of Ada M. Crim, and Rease S. Davis
Mary A. Davis born March 26,1893 in Harrison Co.WV.
Mary E. Davis born March 26,1893 in Harrison Co. WV,
No one had ever spoken of Mary E. so I am guessing maybe she died when born.but I do know my grandmother was taken by a man named Robert Smoot and raised on the Pineridge Reservation until she was old enough to leave and that is when she went to Chicago. From there the rest I have to figure out as when she died she was closer to my dads children Joseph and left everything to him and he is the one living in Maryland.
Again I thank you for all your help. I am so hoping to find their obits with info on their parents and were they last lived in DC.
Oh yea my grandmother was a secretary for someone in the whitehouse or the government.
Do you show anything for the Wolfes? Also anything else for Mary or Sam in DC? I would like to find their memorials or were they are buried. The other grandkids will not talk to me about her. Only that Joseph has her native stuff and that he had it authenticated and will one day give it to the native library in DC. Also he has the moccasins her native mother made her and the head dress of her father so I am guessing her parents there were Chief. Also what about this Robert Smoot? He was an Indian Affair Agent for the government can't seem to locate anything about him either. But I know from Joe that just before she died she told him how she was a Lakota Sioux and how she was sent to the white's school and had her hand tied behind her back so she would use her right hand instead of her left, and that she never spoke of her Lakota parents because they told her she wouldn't make it in the white world if white's knew of her heritage. I really hope to find out more about her living with the Sioux.
Thanks again you are such a big help so far and I really do appreciate it. If I can find out more about her and my grandfather then my time left here on earth I can say I finally found who I am.
Big Hugs,B

No, I am saying Mary was the one raised by the Sioux indians. I believe that since her mom Ada was living at this boarding house with 2 children, that somehow this Robert Smoot came thru and she either gave Mary A. to him or maybe she was killed and he took her. But this is what my grandmother told on her dying bed, so I have to believe it is true as she even had the native items with her initials on them to back all this up. I have searched and even sent to WV for the birth and we got the same thing you got it lists 2 babies for Ada Mary A. and Mary E. but I am more interested in finding were her and my grandfather are buried in DC and a clipping from the paper with their deaths.
You are being so kind and if I am over whelming you please let me know.

Hugs,B

Correction to the 1900 census date: Ada Davis was living the Flagles not Wolfes. Even though Ada has listed as having given birth to 2 children, none are listed with her.

Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is in South Dakota. You might be able to do some research at the National Archives.

I've exhausted by WV reference sources.
Bernice

You are saying that Ada Crimm Davis was Sioux Indian and that Mary A. Davis (Ada's dau) was taken by Robert Smoot as a young child to live at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and this happened in West Virginia. None of the census data indicates that either Mary or Ada were anything but White.
Only a handful of people listed as Indians under race on 1900 WV census. I can't find any mention of a Indian Reservation in Harrison County, nor of a Robert Smoot, Indian agent. This is not to say that there is no such person or place, but that I can't find the info .

When Mary Ann's birth was registred, the race was listed as
White and father's occupation as laborer.

Bernice

Ada M Crimm and Rease S Davis were married on Aug 28, 1892 in Harrison County WV. She was 22 and dau of Mary and John W Crim. He was 23 and son of Amanda and John Davis.

Mary Ann Davis; born March 26, 1893 at Clarksbury WV; first child of Adda C Davis age 22 born Harrison County and Rezin Davis age 23 born Harrison Co. number 248 registred June 12, 1893.

I think that Mary E and Mary A are the same person. On one of the records, the names are alpha and appear to be copied from another source and in the copying Mary Ann became Mary E.

On the 1900 Harrison County WV there is a Ada Davis, born may 1871, age 29, widow; 2 births, 2 living. She is boarding in home of George W and Mary W Wofle?

Bernice
Monika, it has been several months since I looked at the Ancestry Bulletin Board. Say hi to Billy for me , besides being cousins we were pretty good friends growing up, until My family moved South in the early 50's when I was 9. Billy taught me how to tie my shoe when we were in kindergarten together! Tell him thanks, I still remmber how to tie them. I remmber all those comic books Billy had in boxes under his bed. I am living in Prattville, Al (near Montgomery where I work for the Federal Hwy Administration). My son Torin who is 14 & autistic lives with me. I have been divorsed about 1.5 years now. I don't have too much info on the Bottlinger side of the family, but I keep on looking. If you have any info, maybe you will share. I will send some photos of my Grandma Rose if you want. Come & visit. My e-mail is MAGYARMB@Earthlink.net Take care, Dennis
