My mother Louise Tatum was Bish's daughter. Her mom died when she was 13. Bish remarried several times is my understanding. He is buried at a small chapel in Dawsonville. I live here in Dahlonega. Mom has 1 living sister. Mrytle and one brother B.R. I think. I have 1 sister and 2 brothers. I was adopted by my aunt and uncle and was not raised with them. However, I have been in touch with them over the years. And now live close by and getting reconnected with my family. I understand that the Tatum's (Bish) was one of the bigegst moonshiners in Dawsonville back in the day. I'd really like to know any information you may have. My email is goldenhills600@yahoo.com. My name is Susie Olson. Madian name Miller, Mom married Clevland Miller from Dahlonega.

This is a distinct possibility. I have no information on Stephen's daughter Mary. But something has always bothered me about Stephen. Stephen and Mourning were married in King Willliam County, VA in 1746. They had ten children. The only one I have been able to find a birth date for was the fifth child, William, who was born in 1760. Mary was the ninth child. They usually had their children earlier and closer together than these would be. I have been somewhat suspicious. His son John had a daughter named Polly. Stephen's family lived in Dickson Co., TN.

Stephen had two brothers, the older one was named John and His children went to Granville, NC, then to Wilkes Co., GA, and Dickson Co., TN. He his children are candidates for your "Polly".

The younger brother was Benjamin. He had a large family. His eldest son was Reuben Tatum who had a daughter named Polly who married Henry Stokes (there may have been a second marriage His second son, Joseph, had a son named William, but they lived in Pearson Co., NC. Another son, William, had a son named Allen and a daughter named Polly. He seems to have stayed in Lunenburg Co., VA. He had a son named John, born c.1775, whose wife was named Mary. So many Johns and Williams with little information about any of them. We will need to make a timeline chart of them all to keep them straight.

UPDATE: I see from some "charts" on RootsWeb World Connect that Stephen Tatum and his "Mourning wife" had a daughter around 1768 who was named Mary Tatum. Stephen Tatum died around 1788-1789 in Orange Co., NC. Unless someone has information to the contrary, I would not be surprised if this Mary Tatum was the Mary "Polly" who married Josiah Davidson, Senior of Orange Co., VA. Josiah was on the 1810 Rutherford Co., TN census, and his wife was shown as age 26-44 (so that "fits" for a woman who was born about 1768...since she would have been age 42 in 1810). Josiah and his wife had children name Margaret (who married William M. Hicks), David (note: Josiah also had a BROTHER who was named David Davidson), Hugh, Josiah "Junior," Mary (apparently never married), William.... and MAYBE the John Davidson who married Nancy Potts in Williamson Co., TN in 1817. As stated in my earlier post, Josiah Davidson, Senior had a couple of Tatum teenagers (Allen A. Tatum, age 16 and Frances Tatum, age 14) living with him (and Josiah's daughter Mary Davidson) in Hickman Co., TN in 1850, per the census. Comments?

I wonder if the William Tatum who was the son of John Tatum was also the William Tatum who appeared on the 1820 census in Hickman Co., TN? I wonder if one of these Tatums had another Mary "Polly" Tatum who married Josiah Davidson, while Josiah lived in Orange Co., NC (do you have the names of those 11 children of John Tatum and his second wife...and was one of them a Mary/Polly)?

There was a William Brown in Wilkes Co., NC in the mid-late-1700s who fathered sons named William, John, Benjamin and SHADRACK Brown. William left his will in Ashe Co., NC around 1800, as I recall. It appears that this William Brown came into Wilkes Co., NC from the Lunenburg/Halifax Co., VA area (as did some members of the Tribble family), and I suspect that this William Brown married a Tribble from VA (there was a Shadrack Tribble in Lunenburg/Halifax Co., VA who had married an Elizabeth Coleman back in Caroline Co., VA; Shadrack Tribble died in 1759 in Halifax Co., VA, if I remember correctly). The Shadrack Brown who married a Tatum in NC in 1802 was PROBABLY a descendant of this Brown family (I wish a living male Brown from this union would join the Brown Society DNA testing project...my mother was a Brown).

The referenced Elizabeth Coleman who married Shadrack Tribble in Caroline Co., VA was out of the Coleman family in VA that included an early Robert Coleman who married Elizabeth Grizzell, and their son...who was also named Robert Coleman...who married Ann Spilsbe/Spilsby. As such, Shadrack and Elizabeth (Coleman) Tribble had a son who was named Spilsbe Tribble. It appears that this Spilsbe Tribble and his brothers (that included a Benjamin Tribble...note that William Brown had a son named Benjamin Brown) also left VA and moved to Wilkes Co., NC in the 1700s, and it appears that Spilsbe/Spilsby Tribble fathered a son of his own who was named Shadrack Tribble "II".

If there is any evidence of another Mary "Polly" Tatum who could have married Josiah Davidson (born 1766 in VA) in Orange Co., NC before 1810, please let me know. Note: I have "traced" this overall Davidson family back to James City Co., VA by at least 1682. Thanks.

I have two marriages for this John Tatom born 1762 in Spotsylvania Co,VA. The first marriage was to Peggey Phillips january 13 1781, dau of Roger Phillips and Mary. This union had one daughter, Polly, born 1782 in Granville Co.NC. She married Shadrack Brown, Dec 18, 1802 in Dickson Co. Tn.
John Tatom married Mary Wright 20 Oct. 1783 in Granville Co. She was dau of Richard Wright and Mary. She was born 1765 in Granville Co and died November 4, 1861 in Dickson Co. Tn. She is buried in Old Union Cemetery, Charlotte Pike, Dickson, Tn. She applied for Revolutionary War widow's pension benefits on 30 Nov 1840 in Dickson Co.Tn On 1860 census she was living in the household of her son, John Tatom.
In 1790 John and Mary lived in Orange Co. NC beside his widowed mother Mourning Tatum (State Records.NC, Vol 126 page 1299)
John Tatom changed his name to John Tatum prior to 1783.
Deed Book B page 396 Dickson Co Tn "John Tatum Sr, for 'good will I bear to William Tatom, my lawful son' land, stock, land where I now reside and furniture."
Bill...per another post on this message board, there was apparently a Stephen Tatum in VA who married a Mourning???, and they had a son named John Tatum (who eventually lived in Spotsylvania Co., VA) who married a Mary Wright. John fathered a son in VA named William Tatum, and this William Tatum left VA for NC (and MAY have been the William Tatum who was then on the 1820 census in Hickman Co., TN). Was this a branch of your overall Tatum family, by chance?

The 1850 Hickman Co., TN census shows Allen A. Tatum (age 16) and Frances Tatum (age 14) living in the home of Josiah Davidson (age 84 and born in VA). Josiah Davidson was a member of my overall Davidson family, which is "represented" by "Family 10" on the Davidson/Davison/Davisson DNA website at www.davidsongenes.org)

Any idea as to the lineage of the above two Tatum children in the home of Josiah Davidson in TN in 1850? Josiah Davidson was married to a Mary "Polly" Unknown, and his father William Davidson (born circa-1740s in VA) was married to an Elizabeth Unknown (this William Davidson left Henry Co., VA and moved to Orange Co., NC around 1780). I wonder if either Mary "Polly" or Elizabeth was a Tatum? Thanks.

The 1850 Hickman Co., TN census shows Josiah Davidson (age 84 and from VA), and it also shows an Allen A. Tatum (age 16) and a Frances Tatum (age 14) living in Josiah's home. I have a lot of info on this Davidson family. Does anyone know the lineage of the two Tatum children in Josiah Davidson's home?

Josiah Davidson's parents were William Davidson (born in VA circa-1740s) and Elizabeth Unknown. William apparently left Buckingham Co., VA in the mid-1760s with his father (who was also named William Davidson) and moved to the Pittsylvania/Henry/Patrick Co., VA area....before moving again to Orange Co., NC around 1780.

Josiah Davidson married Mary "Polly" Unknown, and it appears that the Josiah Davidson who was on the 1810 Rutherford Co., TN census was this same man (and then he appeared on the censuses in Hickman Co., TN in 1830, 1840 and 1850, and one of his sons, who was also named Josiah Davidson ("Junior"), appeared on the Rutherford Co., TN census in 1830 and 1840...and then Josiah "Junior" moved to Fulton Co., KY by 1850; Josiah "Junior" was married to Mary Finch). I wonder if either the above Elizabeth Unknown (William's wife), or the above Mary "Polly" Unknown (Josiah's wife), was a Tatum? Thanks.

Thank you for getting back in the game. Would be interested in your conjectures about Abel Tatum. A friend of mine here in southern Tn where many of Benjamin and Stephen's descendants live has also proposed a John Tatum as father of this group. He says "Spotsylvania County, VA land Patent Book 12, page 401 records that on 6 June 1726 John Tatham patented 1000 acres in the fork of the Rappahannox River, beginning by---" The land was in the part of Spotsylvania County that was formerly part of King William Co. Va and that this John has the potential of being father of John, Benjamin, Stephen, Agnes, Susannah, Nancy, Jemima and Sarah. Of course this is speculation. Would like and appreciate your comments. My main search of course is to find the father of Benjamin.

We'd also like to get copies of the tin types you mentioned and would gladly pay for them.

We are descended from Jesse's son Jesse Alpheus Tatum, who was lived in Alpharetta, Georgia.
My father is a non matching Tatum too. When his DNA results came back, we discovered that biologically he is an Allen rather than a Tatum. If you Google "Tatum DNA Project" and choose the entry marked "y-results" you'll see my father's and his first cousin's results. They are listed as T-20 and TA-2. Compare these to your results. Perhaps you're another link in our mysterious Tatum/Allen line. If your results are similar, please contact me at PatMill60@bellsouth.net.

Pat Miller

Reuben Tatum is my husbands gggggrandfather (4, I believe). In researching his line, I find that Reuben and Mary Young's son, Lemuel married Lucinda Tatum. Their child, John Issac (I have a picture of him and his family) was the father to my husbands grandfather, Ed Cary Pope. Ed married Birdie King. My husband Gerald (deceased in 2008) was born in 1939 in Union City Tennessee.

A niece on my husbands side is interested in this information. I am trying to pull all loose ends together. Any more information would be helpful.

Thank you, Priscilla from Michigan

NEW INFORMATION on their ancestry. I am a descndant of Benjamin and I had my DNA tested by the Family Tree DNA project and entered into their data base. It shows that my DNA (T-22) is almost identical to that of a descendant of Stephen Tatum with a 99.9% chance there is a common ancestor in the last ten generations or so. But there is a 0% chance (no matches) of having a common ancestor with Nathaniel and his family. I have long held that Nathaniel can't be the father of these sons for various reasons and this test proves it. I think the ancestry goes to an Abel Tatum first mentioned in 1667 in York Co., VA.

There is almost no correlation between our two families. However, there is quite a bit of correlation of your family and that of Samuel Tatum, who coincidently, lived in Madison Co., KY, when my gg grandfather, Craften Tatum, lived there. I knew those two families were not related, but maybe there's a tie in to yours?

Re: BENJAMIN TATUM -VA. CA 1730-32?

NEW EVIDENCE!! I have gotten back into the genealogy game after several years absence. I have long held that Benjamin Tatum's family is NOT related to the other Tatum families in VA (including the Nathaniels'). I have had my DNA tested at the World Families.net DNA Project and there are no matches out of the 67 markers used. We are a completely different family. I have often commented that it is much easier to prove who is NOT an ancestor than who IS the ancestor. I do have a theory about our ancestry and some circumstantial evidence to support it. I am descended from Benjamin Tatum through his eldest son Reuben and his son Craften.
