Francisco Tavares 1872-1938

I'm helping my husband do some research on his Great-grandfather, Francisco Tavares. He came from Sao Miguel (probably Furnas) about 1908 and lived in Fall River, MA until the 1930's when he went to Valley Falls, RI, probably to live near his daughter, Rosa Tavares Estrella, who was born in Sao Miguel 1895. Another child of Francisco Tavares is Arthur J Tavares b. 1914. We have Maria de Arruda as the wife of Francisco, but the death certificate shows a different wife, hard to read, but perhaps is Marion Trazoa (sp?). We know from Francisco's death certificate that his parents were Jose Tavares & Maria Jacinto, both from Sao Miguel. (I put a copy of the Death Certificate for Francisco Tavares on ancestry.com if anyone want to see it.)

One of the Census records shows 2 children for Francisco Tavares with the last name Souza, which is confusing. If anyone knows more about this family, or the Souza onnections, it would be much appreciated if we can exchange information.
-Thank you.

Hi Christine,

I don't have any information for you about the family in the Azores. I can tell you that Manuel Sr & Virgina had 3 children. Sebastian (had 3 children, Suzie, Andy & you), Virigina married Frank Medeiros in Bermuda (they had 4 children, Raymond, Josephine, Joseph & Lorraine)Manuel Jr. married Gloria Kennedy on November 6,1962 (they had two children, David & Donna). Manuel Jr. died on Sept 12, 1990. The rest of the family all live in Canada, with the exception of yourself & Sebastians second wife.

Hope this helps. I would love to know if you have any more information on our family in the Azores.

Sincerely,
Your cousin, Donna

Hi, I just started helping my sister-in-law research her ancestry. Her grandparents came to Fall River, Massachusetts from St Michaels, Azores on the ship Evelyn in 1921. Their names are Laureanou Tavares(Travers) and Estephania Cabrol. Have you run across these names at all? I'm new to Portuguese research, are there any good websites you've found in your research. Any leads would be great!! Thanks!
Sue

Alfred Tavares in WWII

I have a 1942 US 50 cent piece, whose reverse has been whizzed smooth, replaced by a very neat, nearly Gothic printing saying: Alfred Tavares, U.S.Army, March 4---1943, N. Africa. My husband got it at a coin show somewhere in New England. Having had no success in tracing said Alfred Tavares (there were altogether too many of them in the 1930 census, some Portuguese in origin, some from Mexico), I offer it to this family board, in case anyone wants to buy it, cheap. However, I am currently living in Miami, Florida and was born in Rhode Island. There are MANY Portuguese in R.I. & Massachusetts. I mean MANY. All of the Tavares families I know have migrated from the Azores Islands, as did my family. St. Miguel mostly. Does that help?

Where do you live in Brazil?

Nice hearing from you.

Write back!
Curious, I've been trying to put some pieces together as well. No one is certain of the root of the name BRUM.

Did you learn anything?

I am BRUM from my father's side and have TAVARES relatives on my mother's side (SOUSA). The families are all from the Azores, Portugal.

Let me know!
:)

Hi Renata, my name is Lydia, 26 of age from Riverside, Calif. I was tempted to reply to your posted message because my mother's side of the family is from Zacapu, Michoacan. Which only one of my aunts still remains living there. You or your family might know them, since Zacapu is not that big. My aunt's name is Teresa Marmolejo. But her maiden name is Vasquez Sanchez. My uncle's name is Francisco Marmolejo. I went to visit them when I was a teenager (long time ago) and I loved it there. It was beautiful. Well Renata, I hope to hear from you and keep in touch. Sincerely, Lydia Lopez ;)

Tavares from San Miguel

I am new to this site and am searching for information on my fathers side of the family. The following is the only information I have:
Durvalino Maderas(Sp?) Tavares (my father) was born on the island of San Miguel,
Edmund(?) Tavares (my grandfather),
Tiberio Tavares (my father's brother),
Ida Tavares (my father's sister).
I was told that they came to the U.S., hiding on a ship, so that my father could avoid being in the Portugese war that was going on. As they had to lie about his age he was not sure of his birthdate - the known date is 6/21/36 (may be two years earlier).
