The primary Tayloe family home was Mount Airy in Warsaw, Virginia. The Tayloe's are primary a Virginia family, among the first families of Virginia.

I don't know the date of the Washington Post newspaper article but it didn't have anything useful regarding locations of family members other than perhaps the mention of Mount Airy as being the primary family home, and/or The Octagon House (now Museum) in Washington as being a Tayloe home/landmark in DC.

I don't know Richard Tayloe c.1712. I'm sorry I can't help you. I'm primarily interested in my direct lineage not off shoots of other lines.

Look in North Carloina. We have a cousin John who has all the Tayloe info you could ever wish for. I am from Abraham-Richard- Margaret and Charlotte Tayloe bunch who settled in Stewart County TN after leaving Bertie NC in early 1800's. We have had problems with people changing the census and what they read written as Taylor. I will be glad to share any info and find John in NC if you like. We are still around just not appreicated.:)

Not only was the law messed up for heirs but the census didn't list the women and children until 1850.

By the way we have a John from the 1800's who is buried in Stewart County - Is he yours?

Hello I'm a Tayloe descendant .... my father's mother was a Tayloe by birth.

According to the Washington Post newspaper, a number of years back, there is ONLY one Tayloe family in the United States .... and only a handful with this surname, despite the Tayloe family being in this country since the 1600s.

As can be illustrated, John Tayloe III was the 8th child of 9. He inherited the bulk of his father's estate .... for one simple reason ... the law of primogenator .... he was the ONLY male child out of 9 children born to his parents ... this also accounts for why the surname is not common. This and WARS killing off heirs and/or disease/infant/early deaths.

Bonnie, I'm not sure if we're talking about the same William Tayloe. The one I'm researching lived in the late 1600s in Richmond County, VA; was married to Anne Corbin and had a daughter, Mary Tayloe who married John Lyell. I am descended through John Lisle, the son of Mary Tayloe and John Lyell.

I would love to exchange information if we have a connection here.

Late response, but maybe you'll get it.

Was this Abraham Tayloe by any chance a son of Richard Tayloe (d. 1795) of Bertie County, NC? Abraham Tayloe is named first in Richard's will, which presumably means he was the eldest son. Richard's daughter Rachel married James Rice c. 1788 and was my gggg grandmother. I haven't found much on Richard Tayloe. (Since the name was also spelled Taylor in the legal records and census returns, I'm not even sure which one it was! )

William Tayloe descended from a Gloucestershire family and lived in London before sailing to VA. He purchased land on the north side of the Rappahannock River in 1682. This property is located today in Mount Airy, VA.

Information about this and the other Tayloe's can be found in a book: Octagon by George McCue. I know that The Octagon House in Washington DC sells copies. 1799 New York Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20006-5291

Phone 202.626.7369

This is what I have that was copied from A Tayloe book..it wasnt very big but i do know that what I was in to to richard tayloe who died in Stewart county Tennessee Sept. 19, 1839 is correct because it names Margaret(peggy) Tayloe-Outlaw as a daughter. Now what I have for Richard is that his parents were Abraham Tayloe from Bertie Co. Nc who died in 1802 and was born in Maryland around 1740. I havent checked any of this information myself but I am heading to our state archives in Nashville sometime this week. Richard from Stewart county Tn was married to a Winefred Wynns. I can be reached at cristin1970@yahoo.com or on the messenger for yahoo at cristin1970! Hope to hear from some cousins...if any of Nellie Tayloe Ross family is on this contact me..I have a good article written about her.
