BOOK: HOPEDALE, MY HOME TOWN by Ruth Schilpp, publ @1980

I bought a copy of a 560 page book about Hopedale, Tazewell County, Illinois. The book is full of so much information and pictures of families living in Hopedale, Illinois.
The Table of Contents follows:
Founders of Hopedale
At the Turn of the Century
First Brick Home in Hopedale
Hopedale Newspapers
Town Doctors
Businesses
Churches in Hopedale
Park
Baseball in the Park
Post Office
Banks
Hopedale Fire Department
Telephone Services
Library
C & A Railroad
Hopedale Medical Complex
Lodges
Organizations
Village of Hopedale
Traditions
Hopedale Schools
Hopedale's Miracle Girl - Pamela Wilson
Pat McGee - Opera Singer
The Hat Lady
Hobbies
Animals about Town
Interesting Trivia
Cemeteries
This Business of Farming
Some of the Hopedale People
Pictures of Hopedale People
Homes in the Early Years
Miscellaneous Pictures
Hopedale Township
Notes on Tazewell County
Closing Comments
Family Pictures

There are pictures of school graduating classes, churches, men in the military, photos of folks in the train depot, nurses, layout of the original town with the owners of lots, photos of police, teachers, basketball teams, Sunday School classes, janitors, members of the children's Audubon Society holding their birdhouses, race cars, quilters, cemetery headstones, farm equipment, and more.

The only drawback to this book is that there is no index. I believe it would be a valuable resource to anyone with family in Hopedale, Illinois.

I will attempt lookups as long as I have the book. It is for sale.

Please contact me if you have an interest in this book.

Kathy Wieland in St. Louis, MO

Re: Tazwell or Tazewell Family in Mississippi

My GG grandmother was Harriett Rebecca Ward Upshaw, wife of James Beverly Ragland. She was born May 19, 1837 to Mason Tazewell Bonapart Upshaw and Mary Virginia Jones.

Mason, her father, was born Dec. 26, 1797 in Essex Co, VA and died Nov. 1, 1847 in Memphis, TN.

I am certain this is part of the line you are looking for as I have considerable family ties to MS, LA, TN. I will have to sort through my "Upshaw" records to find any earlier info on the Tazewells. Feel free to email me directly at hhvsi@yahoo.com

Taylor's of Tazewell

I am looking for the father of Charles Taylor b. 1807 Virginia. I have traced him back to 1850 eastern district Tazewell county census and wish to go further. I was wondering if anyone has info on Charles Taylor and his father. Also his son Robert Taylor b. 1837 in Virginia served in the civil war and I am having trouble finding which side he served on because the story passed from family member to family member is that he served the confederacy but the artifacts we have are union. Any info would be helpful

Betsey Tazewell

I research Tazwell/Tarzwell surname of Somerset, England. The surname appears a variey of ways in the church records: Tazwell, Tazewell, Tarswell, Tarzwell. A fellow researcher sent me this information:
Betsey Tazwell and her twin brother John Tazwell who were baptized 13 DEC 1811 St. Mary's, Bridgewater, Somerset, dau and son of William and Jane Tazwell. They also had another daughter,
Eliza Tazwell bap 16 JAN 1814 St. Mary's on which William is listed as a yeoman.

I do know of a James Tazwell who emigrated to Kane Co, IL about 1832. His son, James B. Tazewell (12 JAN 1838 ENG-06 OCT 1902 IL) is in the IL Census for Rutland Twp, Kane Co, IL
and the surname listed as Tarzwell. On his marriage 13 APR 1859 in Kane Co, IL his surname is spelled Tazwell. He married Mary Jane Moore 1838c IL. The descendents use the surname
Tazewell. I am wondering if James B. Tazewell may be a relative to Betsey Tazewell.

My great grandmother was a Tarzwell, born in Ontario, Canada.
The surname is spelled a variety of ways in Canadian records
as well as in the Somerset records.
Her grandfather was George Tarzwell of Walton, Somerset, England
and so I have researched church records in that area and some
towns around. Some of the descendents in other lines chose to
use the surname Tazewell, like those in Oregon.
I have not connected Betsey's family with mine as yet.
You can email me at s_vp@hotmail.com for more information and give me
your email and I will give you the name of the person who gave
me the information about Betsey Tazewell.

Sharon
