Obit: Edward Teets, s/o Edward and Phoebe (Terry) Teats

Mount Clemens Monitor Leader - Jan. 11, 1907
Several times during the past few weeks mention has been made of the serious illness of Mr. Edward Teats, one of Macomb county's sturdy pioneers. In sad postscript to these paragraphs comes the announcement of his death on the evening of Jan. 2, aged 79 years. Mr. Teats was born in Dutchess Co., N.Y., in 1829. He removed with his grandparents to Michigan when thirteen years old, locating in Harrison township, this county. The story of his boyhood is much the same as that of other boys of that period, but by the time he arrived at manhood and married Miss Harriet Rackham (daughter of Simon Rackham of All Saints, Sussex Co., England) in Mt. Clemens in 1850, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. Geo. W. Newcomb, pastor of the Presbyterian church, his magnetic personality and sterling qualities had so endeared him to the hearts of his fellowmen that he was urged to accept generalship in municipal affairs. Political honors came to him repeatedly. Year after year he represented his constituency in affairs of state and history making. In business life he ever exhibited that integrity and uprightness which always bring success, he thus comparatively early in life securing a competency. But it was in domestic life that honors him greatest, because of his untiring efforts to "make childhood sweet" and his motto, "If you have a friend worth loving, love him; yes, and let him know you love him, ere life's evening tinge his brow with sunset glow." Why should good words ne'er be said of a friend--till he is dead? He loved him home, he loved his fellowman. Mr. Teats united with the Presbyterian church in 1860, (was an elder for many years) and remained in that faith until he passed beyond to enjoy with unclouded brightness the sunshine of that better land. He resided on his farm in Harrison township until 1896 when he sold the place to William Cole and came to make his home with his daughter Grace, in this city. Few men of his day and denomination have been more popular and few will be lamented more. His funeral was held from his late home with Rev. Kennedy in charge of the services who paid eloquent tribute to the memory of his co-laborer. Nine children remain to mourn his loss: Mrs. Chas. Fries, of Utica, Mrs. Henry Generecuix, of Saginaw, Mrs. Thomas Houghton, of Erin, Arthur Teats, of Harrison, Mrs. Chas. Fields of Hamtramck, Mrs. Robert Fox, of Clinton, Mrs. Anson Harris, of Hamtramck, Mrs. Allen Houghton, of Croswell, and Mrs. Jos. M. Danby, of this city. There are 29 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, also one sister, Mrs. Alice Campau of this city, and two brothers, Jacob Teats, of Kansas, and Philip Teats, of Montana.
Improved Teets Family website at http://johnteets.com

Current version of Teets Family & Ancestry website at http://johnteets.com has over 22,000 names and over 3700 Teets listed, with sources. There are several Teets lines at this point, hopefully to be connected some day. Happy to share and make corrections if merited. Contact me directly at jteets@austin.rr.com.

This site contains genealogy information for the Befort, Booth, Conner, de Temple, Gum, Hall, Harclerode, Hughes, Johnson, Lorentz, Lowe, McKinney, Melton, Ours, Raynes, Stansberry, Teets, Woodruff and Wilfong families, as well as many related others. Many of the above families lived in West Virginia, but they are quickly seen to be from much of the northeast, and from all over the United States.

Hi, I don't have any children listed for Walter &Margaret yet. I just picked up these two genealogies Last Summer and thought I Would work on them to see if they hooked up to Teets in Preston County. But couldn't find a link yet. But you should look at your third husband for Angeline .I have her death certificate and says her husband was A.J. Koontz. I also have Dessie's death certificate and it does list her husband as E. B. koontz.

Phyllis

Hi,

Visited West Virgina Again Last year, we picked up two genealogies done by other members of the family that came from Hardy, Barbour, and Upshur counties. Both seem to have Angeline's Children as Charles Morgan Lance Married to Maggie McCully; Minnie Lance married to a Robertson; Walter Albert Lance Married to Margaret Shaffer; Esta Talbott; Lawson Talbott; Dessie Bell Talbott Married to Ernie Koontz;Hartsel Married to Flossie Fink. Not sure if Dessie's husband is the same as her Mothers . But Dessie death cert. gives her husband's Name as E. B. Koontz. Dessie lived to Be only 34 yrs.

Phyllis Teets.

Hi,
I had most of the spouses of Angeline's siblings, but I only have 6 children listed for her. For Angeline's children--I have Cora B Lantz, Charles Morgan Lantz, Walter Albert Lantz, Louvila E Talbott, Hartsel Schieler Talbott and Dessie Bell Talbott (Dessie married Ernie Koontz--I believe he was Angeline's third husband, Augustus J Koontz's, nephew). What other child (or children) did she have?
I also came on a dead end for the 1880 census for Angeline and her children with Elam Lantz. I could find no record of them there. I thought perhaps the children were raised by relatives--since Elam Lantz died (cause unknown)in 1879 when he was only 31 or 32--and my grandfather, Walter Albert, was only a month or two old. Angeline was only around 21 when she was widowed for the first time.
Thanks for any other information you may have--we appreciate any help.
Phyllis,
Thanks for writing. My husband's grandfather was Walter Albert Lantz (his father's name was John Edwin Lantz and was from Walter's second marriage to Mary Elizabeth Dobronsky). Walter was married at least 3 times. How are you related to Angeline? I have 3 children listed from her marriage to Elam Lance (or Lantz)--Charles Morgan Lantz, Cora B Lantz and Walter Albert Lantz. From her marriage to Irvin Franklin Talbott, I have 3 children also--Esta, Dessie Bell, and Hartsell Schieler. What years were Minnie Lance and Lawson Talbott born? I have neither one listed. Cora B Lance was born December 11, 1877 to Elam and Angeline. Dessie's husband, Ernie Blaine Coontz (or Koontz,) was Angeline's 3rd husband, Augustus Coontz's, nephew. Ernie's father was Augustus' brother, Jasper Coontz.
Mary Teets (older sister of Angeline) was married to Elam Lantz on August 15, 1867. They had at least 1 child--Melissa. They are all listed in the 1870 Census. When Mary died in October 16, 1874 (she was about 24 years old), Angeline and Elam's relationship began. When Elam died in 1879, his widow, Angeline, was only 21 years old.
Do you have any children listed for Walter Albert Lantz and Margaret Shaffer? According to my records, they were married February 14, 1897. I know of at least 2 and possibly 3 children born to that union. Let me know if you would like that info. I also do not know when that marriage ended or how. But Walter married Mary Dobronsky December 9, 1912.

If you want any of the information I have on Angeline's son's (Walter Lantz), other marriages, please let me know.
Also, I am very interested in the children of Angeline and her first 2 husbands. I do not have several of the children you have--do you have any more info on them, such as birth dates? Those children would be Minnie Lance, Lawson Talbott and Esta Talbott(could her first name have Lovila?)--see the following. I have one other child for Irvin Talbott and Angeline--they had a daughter, Lovila E Talbott, born August of 1885. I would really like to explore this further. You could contact us directly at lantz54@ptd.net if you like.
Thanks,
Sylvia (& Fred) Lantz

Hi Melinda, from information posted in 2001 by Shirley Teets and Wanda Foltz, Nancy's parents were Michael Teets Jr. and Margaret Elizabeth Miller (see genealogy.com, http://genforum.genealogy.com/teets/messages/160.html).

What is your source for her father being "Samuel"?

Wish I could be of more help. But if you believe that Michael is her father, then see http://johnteets.com for all that I have on that line of Teets (I have more than 2700 Teets on my web site and trying to make it right).

Hope this helps, and if you find more information please let me know.

John Teets

Hello Mary,
I'm not positive I have this family, since you didn't provide any birth/death dates for either Isaac Kelly or "Catherine" Teets, BUT, check out my web site at http://johnteets.com, and tell me what you think. I have "Christine" Teets, m. Isaac Kelly at
http://johnteets.com/TeetsAncestors-p/p387.htm#i18917.
Check out citation 1 to see if the family looks like the right one for you. I couldn't find them in 1880 as you said in Butler County, but did find them in 1860-1870. Hope this is the correct family.
John Teets (contact me at jteets@austin.rr.com).

Hi, researching the Teets (Deats or Teats) family is a passion of mine, and I would be happy to share with you. I have your Erasmus Teets of Hunterdon, NJ on my web site at http://johnteets.com. He was in born in 1870 and lived in Hunterdon at least thru 1930 per census records. I show one son and three daughters. See the site for those records. Use the Surname Index, and find "Teets (Deats or Teets), he is in that section. The URL of Erasmus is http://johnteets.com/p287.htm#i6684. He was also known as "Erastus". Erasmus is a son of George A. Teets, member of the Adam Teats line, b. c1708. The web site has many of that family. Sometimes you will find the Teets name spelled Deats, Teats, Dietz, and others. If you have information to share, I would love to have it.
Hope this helps,
John Teets

Hi Dorothy, thanks for the information. I forgot to mention in my previous post that Earl and Myrtle were TWINS, according to the 1910 census record; I just checked to be sure. And I found Earl Teets WWI Draft Registration on 9/12/1918. If you would like a copy of it, send me an email to jteets@austin.rr.com and I will email it to you. From this registration, it is clear that he was born on Aug 29, 1900, and since he was a twin of Myrtle, that means she also was born on Aug 29, 1900. Also, I have a document (pdf) on my site of all of the descendants that I know about for Adam Teets (Deats or Teats), b. c1708. If you're interested in that, see
http://johnteets.com/AdamTeets.pdf.

Nancy TEETS/TEATS & Jesse CASTEEL children

I have death certificates for Margaret, Shadrach and Amanda CASTEEL, children of Jesse and Nancy TEATS/TEETS CASTEEL.

Certificates:
Margaret Ellen CASTEEL COLEMAN d 04 Nov 1929 "westernmost, Allegany, MD" is what it says. Information was given by Mrs. D. W. GROSS. I believe that is Emma, Margaret's daughter. She gives her grandmother's maiden name as UPHOLD. It's not uncommon to find mistakes like this, either because of grieving or just lack of knowledge.

Shadrach CASTEEL d 28 Feb 1911 near Friendsville, Garrett, MD. Information was given by John CASTEEL. Shadrach had a son, John W., but I believe he was dead, so it would have been John W.'s son John Alvin (21). He lists Shadrach's parents as Jesse CASTEEL and Nancy TEATS.

Amanda Catherine CASTEEL UPHOLD/UPHOLE BURCH d 21 Mar 1929 Albright, Preston, WV. Information was given by her son, Charles BURCH. It says that his grandparents were Jesse CASTEEL and Nancy TEETS.

Priscilla
