Another DNA Success story

After 36 years of searching, I have finally been able to break down the brick wall to identify my third great-grandfather's paternal line. My ggg-gf was Brownell Green of Charlestown, RI. He was the son of Elizabeth Greene and grandson of Amos and Amie (Knowles) Greene. But his father was unknown and unknowable from the records in Rhode Island.

Earlier this year I found a DNA match between a patrilineal descendant of Brownell Green and a man named Tefft, descended from Joseph and Esther (Brownell) Tefft of Rhode Island. This DNA match was found on smgf.org. Family Tree DNA has just completed a 67-marker DNA test of another descendant of the Teffts of Rhode Island. This man is a participant in the Taaffe DNA Project through Family Tree DNA. http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/t/taaffe/ The latter test matches 61 out of 67 markers with the descendant of Brownell Green. The DNA of the man tested by smgf falls midway between the two men tested by Family Tree DNA.

The results of these three tests can be extrapolated to provide an estimate for 66 of the DNA markers for their common ancestor in Rhode Island.

Patrilineal Tefft descendants are welcome to join the Taaffe/Tefft/... DNA project. As more men named Tefft are tested, we will learn more about our ancestry and origins.

Bill Wright

Edward Strong Tefft of Syracuse New York

Looking for information on Edward Strong Tefft, who lived in Syracuse, New York. More specifically, I'm looking for information on his wife, Elizabeth J. Casserly. She's the daughter of James A. Casserly, and Jane (Hilton) Casserly of Brooklyn, New York. They married on Edward's birthday (June 13) 1885. There is quite a lot of info on Edward, because he was a busy and influential guy, in banking. I know this sounds as if I know a lot, but what I really want is to find more info on Elizabeth's parents and family. My husband descends from Elizabeth's brother Robert James Casserly. The Casserly line research going backwards is dead-ended at James and Jane Casserly. I know Edward and Elizabeth had two children, (Kenneth and Mildred) and at least two grandsons. one from each child. Mildred married Fredrick W. Barker, Jr. Any help that anyone could give me would be much appreciated. Thanks! Lisa Casserly

Snipet I found about Gilbert Tefft from Hawaiian Airlines

HAWAIIAN AIRLINES Captain Gilbert Tefft surveyed the boarding process from the left seat of DC-3 #9’s cockpit. This morning Tefft and copilot Steve Rosetta would transport a full load of passengers from Honolulu to Port Allen Airport. Most of the seats were filled now, and with any luck the flight would depart close to its scheduled time of eight a.m. Soon the captain would bring engines to life, taxi out and depart. After a quick turn the plane would head west above cane fields, the blue waters of Pearl Harbor passing off the right wing as the DC-3 climbed toward Kauai.

Bill Capp moved quietly around his Waikiki apartment this morning so as not to waken his wife. Capp’s position as a Civil Aeronautics Authority inspector allowed the couple to enjoy their comfortable apartment beside Honolulu’s Ala Wai Canal. This early morning departure had nothing to do with the job, though, no sneak inspection or anything like that. Today was Sunday and soon Bill Capp would rendezvous with friend Bill Holloway for a little surfing.
Capp drove his Buick the short distance to the ocean and found a parking space on Kalakaua Avenue near the Royal Hawaiian. As he exited the car he noticed something unusual. Anti-aircraft shells were exploding above Pearl Harbor. Bill had towed targets for the coast auxiliary and knew they never practiced firing over land. He headed home, grabbed his rifle, then sped to the airport.
He brought his car to a stop in front of the Hawaiian Airlines facility. As Bill exited the vehicle one of the company’s pilots yelled “Here comes one.”
Capp didn’t know what the pilot was talking about but joined the man beside a telephone pole. Then he saw it, a Zero heading their way and strafing the area. At that moment the telephone pole seemed no wider than a matchstick to Capp as bullets tore up blacktop on both sides and bits of asphalt hit his legs. He pulled up his trousers after the plane passed to see if he was bleeding.
As Bill Capp left the telephone pole he heard someone shout that another plane was coming, so he darted into a building to take refuge behind a large safe. A number of pilots already were hiding there and Capp landed right on top of them. The pilots welcomed his arrival with a far from complimentary greeting.
After a few minutes passed without the sound of lowflying aircraft and gunfire, Bill ventured outside. DC-3 #9 stood right alongside the hangar. Captain Tefft and Copilot Rosetta had spotted Japanese fighters shooting up the field moments before the plane was to taxi out for departure. The airliner took quite a few hits, but passengers and crew had deplaned quickly enough so that no one was on board when bullets cut through the aluminum. One fighter plane had hit #9 with a cannon shell and started a fire inside the cockpit. Moments later another Japanese plane hit the airliner with bullets, but in a unique twist of fate one of the bullets knocked the top off a Kidde fire extinguisher behind the copilot’s seat and put out the fire. Now some would-be passengers from the DC-3 wandered around the grounds of Hawaiian Airlines. Just as Capp told them to get in their cars and leave the airport a number of bombs exploded beside nearby hangars. The passengers couldn’t have moved quicker to follow the inspector’s advice.
Capp made a quick trip to nearby Andrews Flying Service and requested that all small planes be disabled through the removal of some critical parts. With this job done he returned to his car and left the airport for town. At one point a line of tracers cut across his windshield and he pulled off the road, drove through a small fence and hid behind a house. When he was sure no more planes were coming he again took to the road heading towards town. The car felt like its clutch was burning out, it just wasn’t going fast enough, but when Capp looked down the speedometer said 90 mph. He stopped for a traffic light at School Street and in his rearview mirror he saw a Packard go up in the air and turn over. Probably a shell from one of our ships, he figured. Small fires burned alongside the road on his way home.
By this time Stan Kennedy, Capt. Elliot, and a variety of other Hawaiian Airlines people heard of the attack and reached the airport. ....

Elizabeth Tefft, wife of Nicholas Utter

I do beleive Elizabeth Tefft was a daughter of John Tefft and Mary Barber but remember back in those days when traveling between villages or countryside if there was a birth it wouldn't have been recorded. Records then were scanty at best. I beleive in their old age Nicholas and Elizabeth Tefft Utter lived in vicinity of present day ClarksFalls/Ashaway state line near /off present Anthony Road,,,remember also back then state boundries and town boundries were in constant flux /change. so,,,in the records indicates a old woman around 80 in 1720s-1730 named Elizabeth wife of Nicholas Utter, there was a definite connection to the Tefft family, if you study in depth the whole picture ... I beleive here name was somehow left off the records.

I am looking for proof that Eleanor Tefft, born January 13, 1780, was the daughter of George Tefft and Rebekah Brown. She married Latham Denison in Stephentown, NY, which is where George and Rebekah were buried. I have information about a Brown, Tefft, Denison bible record, but it doesn't seem that Eleanor is mentioned there, although a sister, Rhoda, is. Any help will be very much appreciated.

Patience Tifts / Tefft? b. 1764

Hi there!

I have been researching one of my family lines and have hit a dead end. I have Patience Tifts (born Nov 02, 1764, d. sometime in the 1800s) married to John Conger (b. Mar 28, 1766 in Rathway, NJ, d. Mar 03, 1813 in Hinesburg, VT). I descend from their daugher Mahala Conger (b. abt 1805 in VT). While I have quite a bit on John's ancestry, I cannot find anything about Patience's line - not even the names of her parents. I am wondering if perhaps her ancestry lies in the Tefft line. I don't know if her parents went by the name Tifts or if they had a different spelling (Tift, Teft, Taft, Tifft, Tefft) . . . the only possible "Tifts" I've found so far is Uriah Tifts - marrying Sally Harris in Boston in 1760. I'm still looking into this connection. Does anyone have any ideas about possible connections of my Patience to the Tefft line? Anyone with ancestors in VT, NJ or MA around the early - mid 1700s? Any info or leads would be much appreciated!!

Thanks!
Carissa Thomas (dancingbanana11@hotmail.com)

Tefft George W.

I am searching for links to my g.grandmother Grace Elwood or Elizabeth Tefft. She had a brother George W. Tefft born Feb 3, 1860, died May 14, 1918. I have an original remembrance card from his funeral with the above information on it. I have a picture in my collection of George and Rosa Tefft (the spelling is definitely Tefft with 2 f's). The writing on the back says George and Rosa Tefft. Whether Rosa is a sister or his wife I have no idea. His sister Grace was born in 1868 in Iowa and married George Edward Dunn. They moved to Missouri where my grandfather was born. Are there any Teffts out there that match with this link. I can definitely tell you about Grace, how many children she had etc.etc. etc.
Thanks for any help.

All I know is that she would have been in her late teens, early twenties around 1949. She had a daughter that year, born in Michigan, that she put up for adoption. I am her biological grandaughter and would like to learn about my family history (health and life). If you think you may be her or know someone who might please contact me.

TEFFT Family History

The John Tefft Ancestry is available on microfilm through LDS. The first persons of the name in America were John William TEFFT or TEFFT or TIFFT, etc. the former of whom settled in Boston not later than 1635 and the latter in Portsmouth R.I. It will be noted that the TEFFTS were an intensely patriotic family, their names frequesntly appearing on the rosters of regiments in the Colonial, Revolutionary, and war of 1812. They were equally prominent in civil affairs, holding both local state offices.
In religious faith they were generally Baptists, the prevailing sect in R.I.

I received your message about Amanda TEFFT's family relationship. I will need to do some reading in my TEFFT family genealogy in order to answer your query. I am related to the John TEFFT line. There were/are a lot of TEFFTS living in the area of Easton, Greenwich, etc. I beleive that my ggrandmother, Sarah "Sally" TEFFT -WHITE did have a sister named Amanda. But it might not be the one that you are researching as the families did use the same names over and over again. More later ,and thank you for writing.

Marjorie

Some sources say that Elizabeth Tefft (b. about 1640) married Nicholas Mattson Utter. The sources indicate that her parents were John Tefft and Mary Barber. Other sources just say "Elizabeth".

If I am related to you Teffts, I would love to know it!

Thanks for your help!

George TEFFT and Elizabeth HALL

I am seeking info on George TEFFT, who married Elizabeth HALL sometime prior to 1792, when they were named in her father's will. In that will the spelling was TAFT. However, they had a son named Robert TEFFT, who was born 1794, died 1850. He was married to Rebecca ESSEX, daughter of Corp and Mary. Robert and Rebecca are buried in North Kingstown, RI. Anyone have any clues about these people?

Judge William A. Tefft

Judge William A. Tefft moved to Parkersburg, Wood Co., WV in 1817. His first child, William A. Tefft grew up and married in Parkersburg. He married Sarah Elizabeth Creel and they had 6 children before she died in 1852 of Typhoid fever. It is said in The Tefft Ancestry book that in 1859 he married a second time to Mrs. Emma Tomlinson Hastings of Parkersburg, WV. Since she is listed as "Mrs." I am assuming this is her second marriage, even though she is only about 18 years old. In the birth records for the children they had, she lists Tomlinson as her maiden name. In a census from 1880 her mother lives with the family, and her name is Louise or Louisa Tomlinson. Emma lists Pennsylvania as her birth place in this census (about 1841). In a different place in the Tefft Ancestry book, she is listed as Emma Tomlinson Wyatt Hutchinson. In 1840 there is a Wyatt Hutchinson that lived in Wood Co., but I can find no listing of him in the 1850 census in Wood Co. There are no listings for Hastings in any of the Wood Co. census's. Can anyone help me with finding information on Emma Tomlinson? Does anyone know anything about Wyatt Hutchinson of Wood County or a Hastings family that lived there? Any help would be much appreciated. Jenny Williams

They had four children: Goldie, Everett Wayne, Hilton, and Nora. Goldie and her husband, William Farley, are also buried in Paola, Kansas. We assumed Vinton and Stella Smith lived in or near Paola, Miami County, Kansas. But we know nothing else about them.
John Tefft m. Mary Reynolds

I am a Reynolds family researcher working on the James Reyonlds of North Kingstown, RI, line. I am looking for verification as to the parentage of the Mary Reynolds (born 05 February 1704, RI) who married John Tefft (usually understood to be the the son of John and Joanna (Sprague) Tefft). Some sources list Mary as a daughter of Thomas Reynolds and Sarah Clarke, and other references has her as the daughter of Robert Reynolds Reynolds and Deliverance Smith. Reynolds Family Association Annuals list both Thomas Reynolds and Robert Reynolds having a daughter named Mary born on 05 February 1704, and both giver her husband as John Tefft. Marriage dates for this couple can be found as 11 December 1721, 11 November 1721, and 17 December 1721. I suspect that there may be more than 1 Mary Reynolds or 1 John Tefft involved in all of this (John and Mary being very common names). Can anyone help? Thanks.

Steve Roth
