I had a Prof at Oberlin College translate it a few years ago. Basic Birth Cert stuff, date, location, parents and parents occupation. Thanks for the offer, though, and thanks for the info.

I contacted a Teleha in L'viv a few years ago, got a letter back, and something happened and I never got back to her. And last year contacted a Teleha, he was Mayor of a small town there. Got an email from his sister, gave me a little info, offered more. I've emailed her a few times, but never received anything in return.

Mark,

They refered to themselves as Czechs only because when they were in the US it was part of Czechoslovakia but it was actually the Slovak part of that country!

The 1910 census for Lorain lists them as speaking "Slavish" and Slovenian is stamped over Austria... but Slovak and Slovene are often confused... Chas arrival date in the US is given as 1898 and Mary as 1900 and the sonPaul as 1900... the 1920 census lists them as Slovaks....this time their arrival dates are given as 1900 and 1901... there was also a Stephen TELEHA family living on the same street with a RESEK family... they are also listed as Slovak....

Here are the facts about the town and you will note that most of the population are Ruthenian...

Perechyn (in Hungarian: Perecseny) is a "town type settlement" in the Perechyn (or Pereein) district of Transcarpathia Oblast. The settlement has got ~6.600 inhabitants near all of them Ruthenian. The village was in the Ung (in Ukrainian Uzh (or Už)) County of the Kingdom of Hungary till 1919/1920 (Czechoslovakian occupation / Treaty of Trianon). 1920-1939 part of Czechoslovakia, in 1939 part of the short-lived Subcarpathia, in 1939-1944 part of Hungary (after the Hungarian occupation and annexation). 1946-1992 part of the Soviet Union and now Ukraine. The settlement is a district seat near Uzhhorod (20 km north in the Uzh Valley.

The 1910 population of Uzh district was
Population by language (1910 census):

Ruthenian = 61,711
Hungarian = 53,824
Slovak = 36,364
German = 8,383

As you can see there no Czechs listed. So what you are looking at is not Czech but Slovak. Have you had it translated? If you can scan it and email I would be willing to help with this.

Robert Jerin
Croatian Heritage Museum
Cleveland Ohio

Yup, am a Byzantine Catholic myself. My ancestors came from Perecen, which after they left became part of Czechoslovakia, yet they still referred to themselves as Czechs....

My grandfather's birth certificate was written in something that was half-Russian + half-Czech, if I remember correctly, would have to go back and check.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Mark,

Just found your posts... TELEHA is a Ruthenian name... they came from what is now the western part of Ukraine... prior to WW I it was part of Austria (a province called Galicia) prior to that it was part of the a great Polish Empire (it was the Poles who saved Europe from being overrun by the Turks!)... So he did not come from Czech if he came from that area rather he came from Galicia.... and there is no Russian here... Ruthenians are a distinct ethnic group who are Byzantine Rite Catholics (aka Greek Catholic) which should not be confused with the Orthodox Church...they recognize the authority of the Pope in Rome.... however when these people came to America there were many Roman Catholic Bishops who did not want to recognize Byzantine Catholics as their priest were allowed to marry... thus many became Orthodox religion in America.

Robert Jerin
Croatian Heritage Museum
Cleveland Ohio

Joyce,

Thanks so much for your reply. I will dig thru my paperwork and let you know what I have. I believe it was Tom (his wife is Wendy) that sent the family tree. He actually sent it to my brother, who in turn forwarded it to me, as I was doing the research. I exchanged letters with Wendy a few times, each time she said she was trying to get Tom to email me, but he apparently was too busy with his job. I will get you what I know shortly.

Thanks again for a reply, I had pretty much given up hope.

Mark

Whatever you can get as far as information from your Mom would be greatly appreciated. I am dancing a jig around the room as I write this, I'm so happy. Thanks for answering my post. I'd hit this dead end, and my next course of action was to follow up on those Teleha's I'd found in the 1910 census. And that was going to take some work.

The town that my great-grandfather came from, Perecen, Czechoslovakia, is now located in Ukraine.

I thought it'd be pretty nice to expand the family just a little bit by digging up some information, it's great that someone else feels that way too. I live in Lorain, Ohio. My email address is marknmaryt@yahoo.com.

Here's the deal, Cuz,

At Ancestry.com, they had available, for a brief time, free of charge, the 1910 census. I did a search for PA, hoping to find Stanley Teleha, and his hometown, if it was different than Aliquippa. Instead, I found Janos and Laszlo Teleha, in two different counties. I have it saved to a Microsoft Word file, if you want to see it. Good luck and God Bless in finding something new with your Mom, and for what it's worth, tell her I said HI!

Mark

Family Tree

Hi Mark,
All of the information you forwarded to me seems pretty accurate. My grandfather, Stanley Teleha, also died in the swine flu epidemic in the early 1900's with one of his children. My dad was 4. My grandmother may have told the story about the missing "n" but I think it was actually from my dad's sister. It could all be wrong or maybe a memory not really accurate. I have never seen a birth certificate. If there was one it's been gone a long time. My grandfather was Czech and I think there was Russian influence in the mix too. I have not asked my mother any of these questions, but since we may have found some connection, I'll try to jog her memory. Mom is 86 and I'm not sure she remembers these early conversations with my dad's mother. It sure would be nice to have a few more cousins. Stay in touch. By the way, Mark, where do you live? I'm in the Pittsburgh area.
Joyce

Hi Mark,
I saw your posted message today. Michael Teleha from Aliquippa, PA, was my father. He died 3 years ago. In fact he was buried 3 years ago today, Feb 14. The grandson you mentioned has to be one of my nephews. My grangfather came here from Europe and I was told that his name was "Telehan", and that the last "n" was dropped by whoever processed him through Ellis Island. We may not be related, or perhaps we are. Let me know what information you have.
Joyce
