Classification: Query
Surnames: Telling Clarke Hodgkiss Horton Green
After battling my way through census mis-transcriptions, remarriages and much movement round the country I've hit another dead end. Can anyone link with my Tellings?
John Dore Telling b. c1834 Purton, Wilts
m. Susan Clarke b. c1837 Cirencester, Glos.
children:
(I) Robert John Telling b1858 Marylebone, Middx.
Sarah Amelia Telling b c1860 Daglingworth(?), Glos.
Thomas Telling b. c1865 Edgworth, Glos.
William Telling b. c1867 Wilts.
Emily Telling b. c1869 Swindon, Wilts.
Arthur Telling b. c1872 Swindon, Wilts.
Frank Telling b. c1875 Maisey Hampton, Glos.
(I) Robert John Telling d.1885
m. Mary Ann Hodgkiss b 1859 Oldbury, Worcs.
children.
Mary Ann Telling b. c1880 Oldbury, Worcs.
Susan Telling b. c1881 Oldbury, Worcs.
Emilia Telling b. c1884 Oldbury, Worcs.
(II) Robert William Telling b. 1885 Oldbury, Worcs.
Mary Ann Hodgkiss remarries one Samuel Green, moves to Swansea, and all children are henceforth listed as Green not Telling on subsequent census along with step brothers and sisters.
(II) Robert William Telling
m. Mary Horton b. 1885 Oldbury, Worcs.
Children:
Doris Telling
Lillian Maud Telling
Gwendoline May Telling b.1912
I am descended from Gwendoline and all of the male line here were blacksmiths. I'm particularly interested if anyone can link John Dore Telling in with the rest of the Purton Tellings. He must link somewhere, but I cannot confirm who his father and mother are.
Has anyone else been frustrated by census transcribers index 'Telling' as 'Selling', 'Felling' and even 'Lelling'?! Despite Telling being such an uncommon name, this has been by far the hardest branch of my tree to trace.
