Hi, Just had a talk with the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. There is also a film with the Tempest family tree on it.(Film# 1559428 Item# 1)
As to why I went looking for it is the marriage of Peter Tempest who disappeared in 1361. Most trees list it as later but not here.
Tempest pedigrees

For some time, my colleagues and I have been engaged in studies of the medieval Tempest family. The results of this work are a set of articles and materials which may be viewed at
http://www.medievalgenealogy.org.uk/families/tempest/index.s...

The earliest Tempest that I know about is Roger, seen in Yorkshire in the early 12th Century.

The latest addition to this website is a transcript of a manuscript by Eleanor Blanche Tempest, written in the early part of the 20th Century. This manuscript is in the British Library (a second copy is at Broughton Hall, near Skipton, in west Yorkshire). The manuscript traces the descendants of Roger Tempest into the 20th Century. A typewritten transcript of the manuscript was developed in the 1930s by Mrs. Tempest’s daughter. With the help of colleagues and an OCR program, I have developed a Word transcript of the transcript which is now up on the above website. Included are over a thousand Tempests and their wives. The transcript is over 700 pages plus an index and includes color renderings of coats of arms and signatures, together with a number of pictures. Also included are extensive descriptions of most of these individuals, together with documentation drawn from original and quasi-original sources.

John Schuerman, Chicago

Hi Mike, I didn't realise that Henry Hungerford was a magistrate though I knew he was 'respectable'. Harriet's second husband was William Joseph King, originally of Buffalo, NY, with a father of the same names. Before she died they spent some time on the south coast and she was involved with some kind of nursing home there and became very popular, and generous I guess as they named a room after her. I learnt all this from a book I found from googling Harriet's name a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, I didn't record all the info immediately and now, annoyingly, can't find the web page again.

As for the Gordons, I have all the details of all the ones you mention plus many more as they are all 'my' Gordons who Bulloch always calls the 'Croughly' Gordons from the name of their lands in Banffshire, near Tomintoul. I've nearly finished writing a book about my Gordon ancestors.

Alistair

Hi alastair,

I'd spotted the scandal - quite a story. I've not got anything quite like it in my "tree". (They are VERY remote relations, but I like to follow up interesting leads). This couple had very tragic lives, money notwithstanding - Sir Charles losing his first wife in a fire, and Harriette, after the scandal, marrying William King in 1889, but dying very soon after at only 33. The co-respondent in the divorce case was a very "respectable" man - Henry Hungerford was a magistrate!

I also have Harriette's parents: Rowland Hill Gordon, born about 1834, Nairn Lodge, Nairnshire. Elizabeth Rose Manson, born about 1834, Scotland (too many of that name to be more precise without the certificate). Rowland's father or grandfather (1841 census doesn't tell us) was William A. Gordon, born about 1771, NOT in Nairn. Both were soldiers - Rowland a Captain in the 42nd Highlanders, William, I'm not sure in what.

Sir Charles' 2nd daughter by his first wife,Ethel, was the grandmother of the 17th Duke of Norfolk, (Miles Fitzalan-Howard)the one who died in 2002.

Mike

Hi Mike, many thanks for your response to my 7-year old posting. I always felt I'd get a response eventually. As a follow-up you might like to know that they married on 1st June, 1874 at the Bavarian Embassy Roman Catholic Chapel, Warwick Street, Westminster, London and lived at Ashby Lodge, Northants. They divorced in 1878 which caused shocking headlines in the Times and elsewhere at the time. Harriet died in 1891 in Marylebone. Alistair

If you're still there after 7 years, here is your answer!
Harriett was the second wife of Sir Charles, his first (Cecilia Tichbourne Hibbert) having died in 1865.
Sir Charles (Baronet of Croston Hall) was born 5 Jan 1834, at Croston Hall, Chorley, Lancs, son of Henry Tempest of Heaton, Lancs, and of Broughton Hall, Skipton, a member of the ancient Tempest family of Bracewell/Broughton Hall/Heaton etc. His mother was Jemima Trafford, of the de Traffords of Croston Hall.

Mike

I would like to inform readers of the Tempest message board of two articles on medieval Tempests, both of which are on Chris Phillips' medieval genealogy website. The first is by Douglas Hickling and me: Tempest Wives and Daughters in the Late Medieval Period and the second is by me: The Early Tempests. Both may be found at
http://www.medievalgenealogy.org.uk/families/tempest/index.s...
I'd welcome any responses to these articles.

I also know he ws on trial for assault on jan 19, 1903 in Disko, Indiana, but I can't seem to find any newspaper accounts.
As my researches progress I find a definite link with the Tempests of Whaddon and I think Thomas Tempest (1591-1644) was of Whaddon and he married Martha, daughter of William Willmot of Wantage by Cecilia Hyde. Thomas was the 2nd son of William Tempest by Elizabeth, daughter of William Moore of Hadham or Haddon, Oxon.

I would very much like to hear about the information you have, please.

Many thanks
Caspar
Dear Ron

What wonderful stuff - thank you very, very much indeed.

I have found a note on William Tempest who married Elizabeth Hyland at:
http://www.royalsociety.org/DServe/dserve.exe?dsqIni=Dserve....

It would be very useful to find the obituaries that they mention here.

My diggings in the meantime lead me to suggest that Robert Tempest of Holmside who married Margaret Lenthall was the son of George Tempest by Eleanor, daughter of Robert Millott, George being the son of Robert Tempest by Ann Lambton.

Now Margaret Lenthall is confusing. There was an Anne Lenthall who married a Robert Tempest of Holmeset (and then 2ndly George Smith of Mustanton, Durham and then 3rdly John Tempest of Bolinghall, Yorkshire), but the visitation suggests she died sp. Then there was a Margarett who married Thomas Tempest of Holmesett. These 2 are shown as sisters and were daughters of William Lenthall of Lachford by Katherine Badby. They were sisters to Thomas Lenthall of Lachford, but maybe he also had daughters? As you see, I am struggling to work out who is who. Do you recognise Thomas Tempest of Holmside? Or Anne Lenthall?

I think that Elizabeth who married William Tempest and was daughter of William Moore or More of Hadham (sometimes written Haddon) may have had as her mother the daughter of Gifford of Southampton, but I cannot prove this yet.

I also find that Martha who married Thomas Tempest of Whaddon was the daughter of William Wymote or Willmot by Cecilia Hyde.

Incedentally Hasted's Kent (1797-1801) spells the house in Cranbrook as Sheppards.

Many thanks again.

Regards
Caspar

I have explored Burke's, Surtee's Durham (I could only find Tempest of Stella & Stanley), Hasted's Kent, the Herald's Visitations, Foster's Pedigree's and the IGI but the Cranbrook branch has always proved frustratingly elusive.

Can you fill in any of the other generations, please (between William (d.1682) and his great great grandfather William)?

You have mentioned that William Tempest had 11 daughters by Elizabeth Hyland - can you confirm if one of them was Penelope who married Abraham Whittaker of Stratford, Essex (descended from a family of long standing in the counties of Lancaster and York), please?

Many thanks for your wisdom.

Caspar
I have John or William Tempest of Cranbrook in Kent (20/4/1682-before 5/12/1761) who married Elizabeth Hyland (6/6/1707) and supposedly he was born at Whaddon. Now the Tempests of Cranbrook are meant to be a cadet of the ancient houses of Tempest of Bracewell, Broughton, and Tong, being descended from Sir Richard Tempest.

I do now know if what I have here is correct or not, but can you point me in any illuminating directions, please? The ancestors of John or William Tempest of Cranbrook are my greatest interest.

Thanks
Caspar
Dear Ron

Your knowledge continues to be very impressive and so I write a quick thank you again.

From what you say this makes Anne Lenthall the daughter of William Lenthall of Lachford and not Thomas which you had suggested previously - do you agree with this, please? Therefore her mother would be Katherine, daughter of John Badby by Jane, the daughter and heir of Richard Pipard.

My interest in these details is because my own genealogical approach is to identify my own ancestors up every male and female line, which is how I arrived at this enquiry in the first place. Hence any more information on William Moore of Haddon would be very much appreciated.

Many, many thanks again and kind regards
Caspar
yes no problem though he was Colonel William Tempest not Rev ,a slightly different calling!
He was the second son of John Tempest of Old Durham and Elizabeth dau and sole heir of John Heath. John Tempest was a staunch if somewhat unwise supporter of the Stuart (Royalist) cause in the English Civil War. He fought at the battle of Marston Moor and at the seige of Skipton Castle. He represented the County of Durham as MP from 1675 to 1678.John Tempest acquired the house at Old Durham in right of his wife as sole heiress. He is sometimes styled as of the Isle another Jocobean property near Bradbury (Co. Durham). He died at Forcett (N. Yorks) 1697 at his daughters house.

John was the son of Sir Thomas Tempest, James I's Attourney General for Ireland and a distant cousin, Eleanor daughter of William Tempest of Hadham (Oxon). This branch of the family had left Co. Durham following the failure of the Northern rebellion against Elizabeth I in which they were implicated.

Hpoe this helps.

Nice to hear from you.It depends on the period you are
most interested in.There have been Tempests in Gateshead and nearby areas (Newcastle , Stella , Whickham , N/S Shields)
area for several hundred years. Gateshead (County Durham)lies opposite Newcastle
upon the south bank of the R.Tyne.Marriages ,births and deaths after 1837 to the present day have all been recorded centrally.
I have quite a few listed if you can be more specific with regard to date , name etc.Prior to this the local parish registers are a good source. Again I
have noted some entries for the Gateshead area and would be happy to help if I can.

Glad that Joseph and Catherine fits.Joseph was ,I think, the second son of Martin Tempest of Lamesley (near Gateshead) Co. Durham and Ann daughter of Joseph Gardner of Gateshead.
Martin Tempest died in a mining accident at the Buddle Pit near Pittington (Co Durham).
I can't think of any town/village in Durham called "Brumstead" so the spelling may be incorrect.
In answer to your question I have been "collecting" Tempests for 20 years or so and no it really is no trouble at all. Sadly I am not aware of any specific sites which are dedicated to us (not yet at least!).

What appears to make sense at the moment is the following.

Martin Tempest = Ann Blaketer
mar.1771 Chester le Street Co Durham
possible children:
Elizabeth b.1776
Charles b.1783 (Lamesley)
Thomas b.1787 (Lamesley)
Thomas (above)=Ann dau of Joseph Gardner of Gateshead
mar 1809
children
Martin b.1810
Joseph b.1812 = Catherine Wood
Anne b.1814
Isabella b.1818
Elizabeth b.1823 = Thomas Lewins
Mary b.1831 = Ralph Turnbull
Catherine b. 1838

Thank you very much for the details of the PA Tempests .
Dear Nancie ,
Thanks for the note. I do not think that there
is a secret to it , only perhaps that I have collected
details of family members since the late 70's and some have
to fit some somewhere! Most of my notes are still
not on my computer though I am trying. In terms of
the inter relationship of the various Tempest branches
it is my own view that most if not all are interelated at some point.
Of those within Durham and Northumberland I feel on the balance of probability that
many of the current groups may be scattered decendents of the Tempests of Stella (16th to 18thC) ,
Old Durham and Thornley(nr. Ryton)(16th to 18thC)
, themselves branches of the Holmside line.
The information re Catherine Wood comes from the 1851 census where she is listed as
born in Durham but as you are no doubt aware even this source can be suspect.
Sadly I have some time to go to retirement but its a nice thought !

Kind Regards
RT

Morning great to hear from you,
You father is clearly a man of reinement!
Re Durham , I did a PhD at university there and left in 1980.
That said I am back on a fairly regular basis (Sunderland season ticket , none but the brave or stupid !)
I was back last week and was amazed at the floods.
I have found three or four other Matt Tempests (uncle is a Matthew and still in north (Magpie supporter ).There is a line which
seems to descend from the Newcastle (All Saints the keelmans church near the quayside)area from early 1700.First Matthew I have married a Barbara Swann in mid 18thC,
I guess that they are related to Tempests in the Whickham and Gateshead areas 17th/18th century.
Hello Nancie,
The only two notes of this name I have are from PA
derived from the US Social Security database in this site (Comley d. 1977)
and the telephone listing.I guess your correspondent must know this!
I have not picked up this christian name in the UK but given your own researches there must be
a good chance that many of the PA Tempests came originally from Durham.
Best Regards
RT

Re: Widdrington and Tempest

As far as I am aware William Lord Widdrington ( attainted treason 1715) had two sons by Jane Tempest of Stella (died 1714)
Henry Francis Widdrington ( titular Lord Widrungton )b.1700 died 1774 London without issue and
William Tempest Widdrington b.1712 died 1753 married an Anne Phillips but died also without issue ? I am unaware of the Tempest name being appended to any other Widdrington branches

The heir to the Stella estate was I believe Thomas Eyre of Haslop ( Derbyshire) one of Lord Widdringtons grandsons . I am not aware of a Langdale connection to Stella
Hope this helps ?

To the best of my knowledge the Tempests of Whaddon (Cambs) descend from a branch of the family settled in Oxfordshire in the mid 16th century. This branch was founded by younger sons of Tempest of Holmside (Durham) fleeing the consequences of involvement in the abortive Northern Rebellion of 1569.The Tempests of Holmside desecended from younger sons of the house of Bracewell (Yorks).
Hope this helps

William Tempest

Looking for information on William Tempest, father of Sarah (b. 1815 - Gibraltar), William I. (b. 1821 - Gibraltar) and Charles (b. 1825 - City of London). William is my direct relation through Sarah's line - she married Matthew Parkin in London in 1843. Who was his wife, where and when was he born, what was he doing in Gibraltar? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
