By golly I do have access to that book. Here it is from page 25.

13 Feb 1751 is when the will release was dated of her father Wigard.

(15)XII. MAGDALENA; b.4 June 1696 at R. She d. prior to May 10, 1736, as she is mentioned in the first will of Wigard, as deceased. She m. William Tennis alias Tunes. A Release, dated Feb. 13, 1751, recites that "Samuel Tennis and John Tennis grandsons of Wichert Levering," had received the Legacy of Ten Pounds bequeathed by Wichert Livering to his son-in-law William Tennis. They are described as "of Towamencin Township in the County of Philadelphia." Nothing further has been discovered of her posterity.

I dispute that marriage date because William Tennis was born 2 Nov 1688 and died 17 Jan 1749. He married Magdalena Levering about 1713. Magdalena was born 4 Jun 1696 and died 10 May 1736. I am the great, great, great, great, great, great grandson of William and Magdalena (Levering) Tennis.

I never seen the 1858 Horatio Gates Jones Book.

Nelson Tennis

Here is a short obituary I found today.

Duluth News-Tribune, page 9, March 4 1917....

Mrs. Seth Tennis

Park Rapids, March 3 -- Funeral services for Mrs. Seth Tennis who died at Minneapolis will be held here either Monday or Tuesday. Mr. Tennis is a brother of Mrs. Judd Wright of Brainerd, where, with his wife, he formerly lived.

I think this is a descendent of Seth Cadwalader Tennis who went west with his parents Samuel Tennis and Jane Cadwalader Tennis in early 1800's from Montgomery county Pennsylvania. Anyone connected to these Tennis's of Minnesota?

Ok ej, I think we're unto something here now. I have your Ida listed as Eva Tennis born 1876 in Sullivan county, Indiana. Wasn't she a daughter of John Henry Tennis and Diana (Worth) Tennis???? and a sibling of Ronnie's ancestor Charles M. Tennis????? I probably got the incorrect spelling of Ida from a misread of the census????? So Charles and Ida went out to South Dakota???? All the rest stayed in Indiana except Alonzo Alfred who married a Viola ???? and he died in Florida in 1972 at the age of 96 ???? Does any of this sound familiar????

Nelson Tennis
nrtennison@aol.com

Ronnie, I know a lot of years have passed since your post, but I keep coming back to this board and seeing if I can put more pieces of the TENNIS puzzle together. Do you have an approximate date of birth for your grt. grandfather Charles Martin Tennis. I have a Charles Tennis born 1867 Indiana, but not showing any descendency. He was a son of John Henry Tennis and Diana (Worth) Tennis and yes they originated from Pennsylvania. John Henry Tennis was the great grandson of Israel Tennis (1750-1790) and Jane (Meredith) Tennis (1745-1826) of Towamencin township, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania.

Nelson Tennis
e-mail me at nrtennison@aol.com

William was the son of William Tennis and Rebecca Williams who went west and lived and died in Adamsville, Muskingum co., Ohio. This William and his parents are suppossedly interred at Adamsville Baptist Church Cemetery per an online listing, however I walked that cemetery and couldn't find a stone for any TENNIS'S. Could this be your William. I don't show a spouse or any descendents.

Or how about a will of Alexander?

It's not uncommon for first and middle names to be reversed or spellings aborted in the census's.
In the California Death Index, they show his mother's maiden name as LANGHAM.

In the 1910 census, I found a Howard C. Tennis, son of Alexandria Tennis, born 1840 in Pennsylvania, and mother Elvira M., born 1861 in Georgia. They also have a daughter Carrie M. Tennis, born 1901 in Arkansas. They have 3 step-daughters also with last name looks like HENRY ? Nora A., age 19, Ora age 17 & Minta age 13. Alexandria is a farmer in Yocum township, Carroll co., Arkansas.

In 1920 they are at Prairie twp., Marion co., Arkansas & it shows Howard as the step-son of a Alexander C. Harris, age 83 born in Tennessee, married to a Elvira Harris, age 63, born in Georgia.

Hi Nichole & family

When my wife & I met your mother and grandfather, I told them I would go through all my scrap papers and notes I thrown in a box. When I first started researching my TENNIS ancestors, I was very disorganized and I simply wrote down stuff related to the name TENNIS and didn't write down sources or where I found them. Bad me.
Well at The Hummelstown Historical Society, they have a book of Birth, Marriage & Death notices someone clipped from The Hummelstown Sun newspaper, and they have them all indexed. I think that's where I found this Birth announcement. Your Walter Charles Tennis's parents residence was Piketown, West Hanover twp., but his birth name is listed as, "Samuel TENNIS", born 25 March 1905. Place of birth West Hanover twp., Father= Samuel TENNIS, Mother= Estella Brown, residence of parents, [Piketown].

So, now I want to go back to Hummelstown Historical Society and verify my source, but they have weird open hours that interfere with my work schedule. I also want to go to the State Archives and see if I can find tax records of my grandfather between the time he turned 21 in 1899 and when he married my grandmother Cora Ebersole in 1910. I posted this here as I don't have your e-mail, but just was excited about this find and wanted to share it with your family. I'll keep you updated.

My thought on Walter being named Samuel at birth and then Walter Charles, is that maybe if the father was my grandfather, and he skipped town ? Maybe the BROWN family renamed him to Walter Charles??

I'm still looking for the typical TENNIS. Definitely not me. Anyhow if our theory is correct, your grandfather Charles Tennis would be my first cousin? Same grandfather, but different grandmother. And your mother would be same generation as my two sons Nicholas & Clinton, age 28 & 26. My parents started late having children and so did I.

Hoping to get to the state archives this weekend.

Michelle,

Looks like your grandfather Everett A. TENNIS was a brother to Bertha Tennis who married Ross Harmon. Check out the TENNIS/HARMON thread.

In the 13 Jun 1900 census of Cimmaron township, Kingfisher county, Oklahoma, I found a Birtha Tennis, born Feb 1891 in Iowa.
Hello Michelle,

Please accept my condolenceses on the death of your father last year.

I'm going thru the TENNIS board to see if I can help anyone now, as I've gained a lot of knowledge while researching my TENNIS roots. I've found your father's obituary online. I tried both your e-mail addresses and they got sent back to me undeliverable. I found a Texas Birth Index listing your father as the son of Adele & Everett A. TENNIS. Have you ever learned who Everett A. TENNIS was the son of? If you have anything to share, please post it here.

Regards from
Nelson Tennis of Pa.
nrtennison@aol.com

There is no TENNIS'S in the entire state of Maryland in 1860, in the index anyway of ancestry.com. If I scrolled page for page, I might find some spelled as DENNIS or some other aborted attempt at TENNIS.

However, in 1850 I find your Saml TENNIS at Hagerstown, Washington county, Maryland. He is single, age 23, born in Maryland and guess what his occupation is? (Wagon Maker). He is at the Peter Horn residence and Peter's occupation is (wagon Maker). Also a Jacob Bridge, age 21, at same residence making wagons. So, I have no clue where Samuel came from before 1850? But, if I learn anything, I'll post it here.

Nelson Tennis

Ok, found the same family at the exact same location in Illinois in the 1870 census and guess what. Your James TENNIS is known as Edward TENNIS. I find this a lot in these years of census's when one decade the person gives a middle name and next decade they give a first name. So Your James Tennis was probably known as James Edward TENNIS.

Edward's age is 11, born in Maryland. His parents are Samuel TENNIS, age 41, born In Maryland?, occupation (Wagon Making). Mother's name is spelled Louisiana TENNIS, age 31, born in Maryland. And going by the rest of the children's birthplace's. They must've moved from Maryland to Illinois about 1865. Let me see if I can find them in the 1860 census in Maryland?

Nelson Tennis

I guess you already have the 1880 census of The Village of Fairview, Fulton county, Illinois. It shows a James TENNIS, age 21, born in Maryland (Farmer) as son of Samuel TENNIS age 53, born in 1827 in Pennsylvania & both Samuel's parents being born in Pennsylvania. Samuel is a (Painter). Samuel's wife is Lousana, age 42, born in Maryland. I can't find any match in my tree of Pennsylvania TENNIS'S. He might be connected to the Beaver county, Pennsylvania Tennis's who trace back to Germantown with my ancestor's? James has a lot of brothers and sisters.

Nelson Tennis

I know it's been a few years Laura since your posting, but I didn't know there was a TENNIS immigration before the Civil War, from Germany. So the immigrant was John Tennis, born 1802 in Germany, and immigrated between 1841 & 1846? Do you know what port or ship he came to the USA on?

I'm descended from the 1683 immigration of Abraham Tunes Klincken & Beatrix Boetzen Luckens. Their son William took the last name TENNIS and their other son Anthony took the last name TUNIS.

Nelson Tennis

I'm interested in Bertha E. Tennis's ancestry. What part of Oklahoma did she marry Ross at?

In the 13 Jun 1900 census of Cimmaron township, Kingfisher county, Oklahoma, I found a Birtha Tennis, born Feb 1891 in Iowa. So sometime between then and when Evert was born in 1893, they moved from Iowa to Oklahoma. But what interests me most is the birthplace of the father & mother of William is Pennsylvania. Several possibilities, but I got to study this more indepth.

This census taker had very poor spelling and penmanship, so some of the names could be different. But he had Bertha spelled as "Birtha" :)

Nelson Tennis
of Central Pa.

Good Morning Nichole,

Is that where Walter was living in 1945? "Piketown"

Maybe we could get together sometime and share photos. I have some of my grandfather when he was young. Let me know. Me and my wife are coming to Kinzers Saturday, the 14th, to Rough & Tumble Blacksmith Days. Maybe we could meet there? I don't know where your from, but I seen Nora's obituary, and that she was from Kinzers.

Another option to verify this connection is DNA testing. The costs have come down, so I'm told. Last time I read an article on it, it said it would need to be a male from the same generation as me? Is there a surviving son of Walter who would be willing to do something like this? If our theory is correct, Walter Charles Tennis would be a step-brother to my father Jacob Samuel Tennis [1913-1992].

Have you ever tried to get a birth certificate on Walter? He might have just missed the cut-off? I believe the state started that requirement in 1906.

Keep in touch, let me know what you think?

Nelson Tennis
500 Scotch Pine Rd.
Dillsburg, Pa. 17019-9733

nrtennison@aol.com

cell= 717-695-1426
Greetings Paula,

I can't find anything in my files on the ancestry of your great grandmother Caroline Lucinda TENNIS. I assume you already checked the census's? When I can't find someone in the census, I pick the most unique name and go from there with all kinds of spelling variations. So. I chose her sibling you have as Lancon and came up with a Lansing TENNIS in the 1850 census. This is what I found. Might this be your Caroline's family in 1850, but they have Caroline as being born in Missouri?

1850, Southwest, part of District 22, Montgomery county, Illinois.

TENNIS-Nancy, age 40, born Ohio.
TENNIS-James, age 17, born Ohio.
TENNIS-Clarinda, age 15, born Illinois (I think).
TENNIS-Caroline, age 10, born Missouri.
TENNIS-Berthane, age 8, born Illinois. (Maybe Margaret)?
TENNIS-Lansing, age 4, born Illinois.

Do you know when Caroline Lucinda [TENNIS] LADUE moved to Yolo county, California?

In the 1870 census, I found a John Lansing TENNIS, age 24, in Yolo county. Probably went west for the Gold Rush?

If this is your ancestor's in 1850? now we have to figure out who was Nancy married to. But, everytime I find a James TENNIS, their ancestry comes back to Beaver county, Pennsylvania after the Revolution to Samuel Tennis who was the son of John & Mary TENNIS from Juniata county who came from Montgomery county and Germantown, Philadelphia.

Regards
Nelson Tennis

What year was his SSI application?

I find Stella A. BROWN, born Apr 1885, in the 1900 census in West Hanover twp., Dauphin county. She's the daughter of George & Polly.

In 1910, George & Pollie Brown have a grand-son named Walter TENNIS [age 5] listed. No Stella in that household. So, I'm assuming Walter's mother [Stella] may have died between giving birth to Walter [1905] and the census year of 1910. And the father Samuel TENNIS flew to coop. But if Walter took the last name TENNIS, then Samuel must've married Stella????? Don't know protocol in 1905.

In 1920, Walter TENNIS is residing at 801 West Cherry street in Palmyra, Lebanon county with George C. Brown and Polly. Walter C. TENNIS is listed as step-son. [age 14]

In 1930. Walter Tennis, [age 25], is residing with his Aunt Mabel Harman, [age 33], divorced, at 444 South 15th street, Harrisburg, Dauphin county, Pa.

My grandfather was named Samuel Joseph TENNIS, [1879-1966], he was born in West Hanover twp., Dauphin county, Pa. He changed his middle name to Jacob in 12 Nov 1910 when he married Cora Gingrich EBERSOLE. They lived all their lives in North Annville twp., Lebanon county, Pa. Both died at The Mennonite Home in Lancaster co., directly across from present day Park City Mall. My grandfather was a very stern, quiet, disiplinary man who never spoke of his past. Maybe he fathered your Walter in 1905 before he married my grandmother????? I'm going to visit my Aunt tomorrow, who is in her 80's but very intelligent and outspoken and gives me great assistance in my research when I get inside her head. If she says my grandfather had a girlfriend name Stella, then we're pretty sure your Walter was a step-brother to my Dad, who died in 1992, before I ever became interested in Genealogy.

I have another possible Samuel Tennis who was born in 1891, who would've only been 14 in 1905 though????

Regards
Nelson

Nelson,

I want to thank you again for the information that you provided! We are almost positive that your Samuel Tennis and ours is one in the same.

Stella Brown did not in fact pass away. My mother asked her father about Stella today and he said that he does remember her but could not recall when she did pass. We think that possibly her name could be Estella and that she just went by the nickname Stella. The SSI application I spoke about was completed 27 Feb 1945.

If you wouldn't mind we would greatly appreciate anything you would be willing to share about Samuel Tennis as our family has been trying to trace our roots back for years.

Thank you again,
Nichole

The people you and your wife met up with were my grandfather and my great-aunt. I am not your typical Tennis thus the reason (aside from previous travel plans) that I had my Mom talk to her father about meeting with you. My great-grandfather (Walter Charles) it appears was abandoned by both his mother and father and raised by the Browns until he moved between 2 aunts before he married my great-grandmother (Nora V. Plank). Aside from that nobody really knows much about his childhood. Don't know if that helps at all. Definitely anxious to see what you find out on your journies into the archives!
The Montgomery County, IL Tennis families are (I believe) all descendants of John Tennis and Polly Kincaid. Based on research by Lori Hefner, John and Polly had six sons: Adison, Alexander, Andrew, John Franklin, Samuel Boyd and William.
The 1830 census of Montgomery County shows a record for Mary Tennis with four sons. Land records around the same time, as well as census records from 1840, indicate that these are Andrew, John Franklin, William and Alexander. Adison is probably the best researched of the sons, and he is known to have settled in Missouri, though did spend some time in Illinois.
Looking at the 1850 census records in Montgomery County, there are four Tennis families, with heads of household William, Alexander, Mary and Nancy. Andrew married Mary Blair in 12/28/1826 in Brown County, OH, while John Franklin Tennis married Nancy Pack on 11/8/1832...this strongly suggests that the missing father is John Franklin Tennis.
My records are packed away, though I do have a PDF copy of the marriage registration for John Franklin I can send. I also have PDF copies of numerous land records from Montgomery County for John Franklin. May I recommend looking for John Franklin Tennis in the 1840 census in Missouri, near to where Adison Tennis is...I forget the county offhand, but the fact that Caroline is listed as being born in Missouri in 1850 in the census suggests they may have been there.
Now, I'm not sure whether Paula's Caroline is necessarily John Franklin's, but it seems logical...just for the record, I'm descended from Alexander Tennis.
Jeremy

Since my postings, I have run across a copy of Carey and Caroline's marriage record that states they were married in El Dorado Co., California not in New York as I had. I always wondered why New York. I've been looking for the source of the names of Caroline's siblings that I have and I can't find it. At this point I'm not sure they are her siblings. What seems strange is the 1850 census that you sited that states a Caroline Tennis was born in Missouri..the age seems to fit my Caroline.
I'll just keep looking and I'm sure the answer will surface some day.
Paula

Thanks for your reply and information. Some of it I have and some of it is new to me. My connection to the Ladues is through Caroline and Carey's daughter, Frances 'Fannie' Caroline who married her third cousin, James Ladue Case.
I have Carey's mother as Mary Carey. I have also seen both her and Samuel's birthdates as Sept 11, 1785.
The only picture I have of any of the family is that of Fannie..I can send a copy of it if you'd like. Please let me know of any additonal information you get on the family and I will do the same.
Paula

Thanks for your reply. I'm not entirely convinced that this Caroline is my great grandmother even though some of the names and dates seem to match. The family is sure that she was born in Indiana even though there is no evidence to back that up either. I appreciate all the input...someday the right puzzle piece will show up.
Paula

Aunt Helen celebrated her 99th birthday this past June! I don't know Virginia Hines.
I just looked at an ancestry tree and there is a researcher who lists Caroline's parents as James Madison Tennis b. 17 May 1814 and her mother as Clarinda Ellender b. 26 Nov 1816.
she doesn't have place of birth or death. This user has not been online in 6 months. I sent her an email via ancestry

I am part of the Ladue family out here in CA. My line comes from Vallas/Valloise LaDue who married Frances Lila Stetson.
I dont have much more on Caroline, but I just found this piece of info online. Maybe you already have it. It does backup your info about the marriage in El Dorado County, CA.

a bit about Eugene Elsworth Ladue
California Death Index, 1940-1997
Name: Eugene Elsworth Ladue
Social Security #: 568181106
Sex: MALE
Birth Date: 22 Oct 1876
Birthplace: California
Death Date: 1 Feb 1953
Death Place: Los Angeles
Mother's Maiden Name: Tennis
FATHER'S SURNAME: Ladue

1930 United States Federal Census- Redondo Beach, CA. He was first in Eldorado County where he was in the mines then moved to land near Black's Station where he farmed until 1884. Then he went to another ranch six miles west. In 1896 he was killed in the vicinity of Black's by falling from a wagon.

His wife was Caroline (TENNESS) a native of IL, and she died in Woodland after the death of her husband. They had 9 sons and 5 daughters, two sons not living to maturity.

Eugene Ellsworth LA DUE was the tenth in order of birth.
