Re: GGGGrandfather Alfred Terrill

Just stumbled on your post from 2004. I have been researching the Terrill Family for several years, specifically the Alfred Terrill connection. He would be my GGG grandfather also. I did find a marriage record in Green Lake County, for Alfred, after his wife Hannah Kimball died. He married a Rebecca Hobson. That record listed his parents as Jonathon Terrill and Elizabeth Tiffany Terrill. Strangely enough, although I find lots of children for Jonathon, and know all of the connections, I have never been able to locate a birth record for Alfred. I also know that I was always told that he and Enoch were brothers, also that Edson (Enoch)and Eugene,(Alfred) were first cousins.

Thanks for taking the time to detail this for me, and giving me some hints for the search. I know that Micajah Terrill had a child named Oliver Cromwell Terrill, who would have been only about 3 years older than my William. I suspect Oliver was a cousin, and perhaps close to William, as he used that name with his second son. Just wish I could prove his lineage to my own satisfaction. I have gathered a lot of facts to support attaching him to James Terrill and Ann Smith of Rockcastle County, KY. Based upon preponderance of evidence, the Terrill society accepted the association, but I continue to look for something that proves that association or some other. Thanks for your help on the Missouri Terrills.

Henry's sons are proven in this will.
Children from marriage to Susan Phillips:
Thomas, Nancy, Mary F, Robert A, and Henry Towles.
Children from 2nd marriage to Martha Alexander:
John, Overton, James A, Sedone, and Patsey.

John relocated to Marion County, MO area and shows up in Macon County, Missouri census info.

Overton stayed and died in Garrard Co., KY.

I'm not sure about James but I think he is the James H that shows up in the 1860 census in Marion Co., MO

Robert died in Marion Co., MO

Henry Towles died in Sumner Co., TN.

I haven't found out much on Thomas except he married a Sally Palmer in Garrard Co., KY on 10 Jan 1809. I suspect he died in KY and his wife later relocated to Marion Co., MO with their family. A Sarah Terrill shows up in the 1850 Marion Co., MO census, b abt 1788 KY with children. The oldest child living with her was Oliver b. abt 1824 in KY. From what you've told me about your William, I suspect he is the child of Thomas Terrill and Sally/Sarah Palmer. You should be able to call the Marion County Courthouse and get either a will or probate records for this Sarah. Hopefully you're mystery will be solved.

Hope this helps.

Mark

This line was related to mine, but I am not sure how far back they diverge. The ones I am looking for also lived in the Garrard County/Madison County area of KY. My GGGf went west with some family, just early enough that I cannot make the census link to his father. He was living in Indian Territory, OK by 1848. He is rumored to have been disinherited because he went down into in IT to live and then married a girl down there. Also some old family tales of him floating into Webbers Falls, IT on a barge, with his white horse. The closest Terrill relatives were living in MO at that time, possibly your branch. I also once looked at the Census records and found one of the MO households had one more male than family records indicate for a particular age group. So, I keep wondering if my guy (William Smith Terrill, b 1818) was among the MO terrills. Also, he named one of his children Oliver Cromwell Terrill, and I know that name was part of the MO Terrills.

If any of this ring a bell with something in your research, let me know!
SusaN

When was this will signed? I didn't see a date, maybe I just overlooked it. Do you know if A) this family is related to Edmund Terrill I and II of Madison County, KY...B) Is this family related to Oliver Cromwell Terrill, MO (I Think)...C) Is there any evidence that Robert's family had an additional family member (William S. Terrill) living with them prior to 1845? I am trying to confirm a lineage for my own GGGrandfather, who arrived in Indian Territory by around 1844. I believe he is son of James Terrill and Ann Smith Terrill of Mt Vernon, KY. This James was the son of Edmund II. Let me know if you have any mention in records of an extra person traveling to MO with the family. Thanks

William S Terrill evidence sought

It has been awhile since I last posted. I have William Smith Terrill (Born 1818) attached to James Terrill, Rockcastle Cty, KY and Ann Smith, dau of William Smith, also of Rockcastle County, KY. This relationship is based upon preponderance of evidence, but no smoking gun has been sought. William had already moved to Indian Territory, OK by 1850 Census when he would have been mentioned by name. He married a part Cherokee girl, named Mary Ann Thompson. He had sons named Edmund, James Preston, Oliver Cromwell, John Gunn, William Smith II, Albert Pike, Henry, Allen,

If anyone has a story of a Kentucky Terrill son being disinherited or otherwise rejected by his family for marrying an Indian girl, I would be interested in talking to you. If you are part of this family group from Mount Vernon, KY, I would also like to talk to you to compare what you may have on the James and Ann Smith Terrill family. I know that they had a male child under the age of 5 in 1820.

I have a James H. Terrell, but do not attribute his middle name as Hunter (I have two other James Hunter Terrells who do not match your facts). He was the son of John Terrell (b. 1784) and Sarah ___ (b. ?).

Don C. Terrill

Samuel and Mary Trewren Terrill

Stephen and Elizabeth Jelbert (nee Gilbert): married in Redruth 17 August 1809. He was a blacksmith and victualler at Redruth Inn on E. Fore St. (census) and was christened 19 May 1755 in Perranuthnoe, Cornwall.
His parents: Stephen and Lucretia Matthew(s) married 14 October 1754
a. Stephen ch 19 May 1755 who married Elizabeth Jelbert [Gilbert]
b. Elizabeth ch 5 November 1756
c. Jane ch 16 April 1759
Stephen and Elizabeth Jelbert (Gilbert) married 17 August 1809 in Redruth, Cornwall. She was born 1 June 1791 and died 2 April 1851 in Redruth.
Her parents: Richard Gilbert b 24 October 1763 in Illogan, Cornwall, married 4 January 1789 in Redruth to Elizabeth Reynolds who was born 26 December 1765 in Redruth. Richard and Elizabeth Reynolds Gilbert also had a son Richard Gilbert born 1 November 1789 in Redruth.
Richard’s parents were Edward Gilbert and Anne Rogers (no info on either). Elizabeth Reynold’s parents were Wm Reynolds and Joan (no maiden?)
Stephen and Elizabeth Jelbert Bawden had, in Redruth:
1. Stephen - b 6 April 1812, ch 25 April 1813, married Mary Terrill born 8 April 1817 in Redruth, dtr of Samuel and Mary (Trewren or Tremain) Terrill of Redruth. Mary's sister, Elizabeth Clemo and dtr Elizabeth lived with the family, too. Mom married Wm. Clemo and it is thought she was divorced before she came to the US and lived with brother Stephen in Phildelphia and Iowa.
2. Harriet – ch 5 March 1815 – possibly housekeeper (June 1870 US census) for English couple in Franklin Twnshp, Naughton Cnty, MI; 23-yo miner Matthew H. Dennis, 22-yo wife Eliza Jane and 1-mo son William John.
3. Edwin - ch 30 March 1817. Joined gold rush to Alaska, mined gold for wife’s ring, married Elizabeth Kitto(e) in Redruth, came to Mineral Point / Linden, Iowa County, WI, (US) and set up blacksmith shop. They had 5 children. Edwin / Edward died of horse kick in the head in early 40 yo.
4. John- ch 18 April 1819 no info
5. Henry - ch 1 April 1821 no info, married Josepha Matthews and lived and died in Moonta, Australia as a carpenter.
6. Elizabeth – ch 15 March 1823: came to US (no date) as part of brother Stephen’s (1 above) household in 1860. It is not known if she came with Stephen and Mary but 1860 federal census says she was part of his household.
7. Caroline – ch 5 October 1825. Married Thos Vivian b. 1826 in Redruth. Dtr Caroline Bawden Vivian married John Henry Harris from Devon.
8. Matilda – ch 19 July 1830. Came to US (no date) possibly with sister Elizabeth. 1860 federal census says she was part of brother Stephen’s household in Rockingham Twnshp. She married Mr. Knotwell (no name, no date or location) and they had a child named M B Knotwell (Oakdale Memorial Gardens database). I'm guessing by the history of naming children, it was probably a dtr named Matilda Bawden Knotwell. The child (no gender in the records) died at 5 yrs of brain fever (cholera) and is buried with grandparents Stephen and Mary. There is no burial info for Matilda or Knotwell in Oakdale.
I can trade Terrill info with anyone. My list goes back to Mary's grandparents.

Hi, Was so excited to see your posting. S. Smith Terrill was my great grandfather and was married to Decima Flippen - Decie for short. They had one daughter named Decie also and she was my grandmother. I hope you get this because I would like to exchange information, etc.

Dr. Terrill died in Fl and is buried at Howey in the Hills, Fl. Decie died in San Francisco and was cremated. I have the name of the mortuary I believe in my papers, will look that up if I hear back from you. They divorce early in their marriage. Dr. Terrill never re-married, but Decie did to a man named Dunkley. He died early in their marriage and she never re-married.

Have you found your answer yet? I am descended from John Allen Terrell and Lucy Talley. Mary, their daughter, was my grandmother. I have cobbled together some info. that says James Hunter Terrell, Jr., father of John Allen, was the son of James Hunter Terrell, Sr. and Susan Vibert. I have recently come across some disturbing news that Terrell, Sr. was childless. Do you know anything about this?
