regarding Gertrude Edith Tevebaugh. Do you have any information on siblings? I know she had a brother "Buck" but don't know if it was a nick name or given. He worked at a cement (mine?) plant and had been injured in an explosion...sometime before 1962-1965...that's when he lived in a trailer behind my mom and dad's house in California. I have found an obit for a Buck in Tahachapi, Ca...any of this familiar? Also, did the have a sister Lillian (Davis?) I remeber meeting her at Hampton (Hamp) Yarborough's in California, also about 1964-1965....mom (Mildred Louise "Pat" Hughes told me the Yarborough's were cousins.
ANY information at all is greatly appreciated!
Renee
P.S. so what would our relationship be?
Thanks!!
PPS I now live in Utah
Anita,
I just gave you some data, much more than you had. Why don't you say how you connect to Philip? Data should be a two-way street; what is your connection? Who are your parents? Such information will allow me to assist you in a more meaningful way: which of Philip's children do you descend from? why are you collecting data?
John L.

Philip Teverbaugh's parentage is somewhat in question, but we know he was a grandson of Abraham Tevebaugh, the founder of our Martin County, IN, family. Probate records and marriage applications of his cousins suggest he was born in Martin Co. or in Daviess Co. His birth year was given as 1846, 1847 or 1848. You missed son, Lafayette, and twins b. in 1900. His wife was Sarah Alice Sigler.
How about some data for you? I do have more in my home files. John L. Tevebaugh

ATTENTION! All Tevebaughs, Teverbaughs, and Teaverbaughs!
In June, 2010, we celebrate the arrival in America of our immigrant ancestor.
He was Johann Conrad Dieffenbach, a 43-year old cooper from Baden, Germany, who went down the Rhine River to Rotterdam in 1709 with his wife, Barbara, daughters Maria Elisabetha and Anna Elisabetha, his 75-year old mother, Anna, and his daughter from his first marriage, Catharina Margaretha. They arrived in New York harbor the next June on one of several sailing ships from England carrying several thousand Palatine Germans thousands of miles from home, ready to begin anew in America.
Yes, I said Dieffenbach, for Tevebaugh and the other 2 variations above were what Irish and Welsh clerks had made of the sounds of that German surname by about 1760. This happened to other Dieffenbachs, but the new name only stuck on 2 boys, Daniel and Jacob in western Virginia and Pennsylvania.
Take a moment this June to be thankful that the long journey was successful and they had a new American name.
John L. Tevebaugh

John Wesley Tevebaugh was my great grandfather. John Wesley Tevebaugh's wifes name was Sarah Isabelle Marsh. Sarah came from TN. He lived in Monroe City, Indiana. He rode his horse to Indianapolis to enlist in the civil war. He fought for the north. I sent away for his service records. He returned after the war to his farm. His home and farm were right next to the cemetary where he is buried. The cemetary is called Walnut Grove in Monroe City. My mother has a picture of him with his wife. Let me know what else you would like to know. I will try to find photos to scan and email. John Wesley Tevebaugh's fathers name was John also.
Contact me at mdoylega(at)gmail.com Maria Doyle

Dennis,
Your original question was whether the correct spelling of our name was Tevebaugh or Teverbaugh. The answer is totally dependent upon how your family spelled the surname. County clerks did it to families in almost every one of the 5 branches of our family. Some kept the "R" and some didn't. They/We all have the same immigrant ancestor, and he was a Dieffenbach. If you would like to explore this farther, email me personally. John

Dennis and Rita, I hate to contradict you, Rita, but you have it rather backward. The ORIGINAL immigrants were Dief(f)enbachs. There were no "immigration officials" as we usually speak of them at that time. Port officials and the ships' captains all kept passenger lists, most all of which were written phonetically. The real "damage" to the name was done by county clerks where these Dief(f)enbachs settled, especially PA, MD, VA and NC. Between about 1775 and 1800 every single Dieffenbach immigrant was recorded by some clerk as "Tevebaugh," but that was only for a year or so and was among more than a dozen other variations of Dieffenbach which they recorded people as. The Deffenbaughs and Devebachs, etc., became permanent, too. Remember, the first "Tevebaugh" yet found was in the later 1760s, it was ours, but we had arrived as Dieffenbachs, just like all the rest did!

Tevebaugh is the correct spelling. Immigration officals in US couldn't or wouldn't spell the German surname correctly and it became Dieiffenbach, Dieffenbaugh, etc. Many Penn Dutch people kept the surname Dieffenbach, and others went back to Tevebaugh.

Hi, Plase send me your email address so I can begin to answer directly to you. I have lots of data about Bernice's family, going back into the 1700s. Maybe you could help me with more recent data. My address is < JTeveb6441@aol.com. If for some reason you don't like that arrangement, just ask more specific questions and post them here. Her husband, by the way, was William S. Teverbaugh. John Tevebaugh
