John Tews / Amealia Newbery Tews

John and Amealia came to America about 1867 - 68. They were from Germany. John died in around 1874-75. They lived in Iron Ridge,WI. Amealia married Charles Grosskopf and moved to Grant, WI. I'm trying to find out the name of John's father and mother, as well as the date and place of death of both John and Amealia. Also, I'm looking for brothers/sisters or other relatives of John and Amealia. Any records from Iron Ridge were destroyed during a fire of the building housing the records. Thank you for any info that might help. Dona Betenbaugh

There may well be a connection between our families. I have passed your information on to another descendant of Jacob TEWS Carl's son to see if she can draw a connection. Carl was married I believe several times -- to Wilhelmina, to Emma and perhaps even to Louise. If you have any further information you can send it on to me if you wish. Many thansk for your message.

Hello Jeffrey, your father Roger William, was my father's (James Eugene Tews) brother, my name is Maryellen Tews, I'm the youngest of Jim & Myrtles' children. I just received an e-mail the other day from Aunt Lucy Graham, and also from cousin Joan, I contacted Aunt Lucy, regarding a book that Robert Loerzel is writing about ''The Great Chicago Car Barn Tragedy'', great-uncle Lawrence John Sovea, Anna v. Tews's (Sovea) older brother, was a brakeman on the Pennsylvania railroad line. On Nov. 27th, 1903, he was killed by the car barn bandits, these criminals had begun a crime spree in Chicago, in 1902, they killed several people, including saloon keepers, railroad station cashiers, and one police officer, Grandma Tews had a copy of a book written about the subject, there is detailed information about the crimes at www.chicagotimecapsule.com.., Robert Loerzel also wrote a book titled ''The Alchemy of Bones''. Also a true crime account, of the murder of Louise Luetgart, she had a cousin by the name of Sophia Tews, the website for that book is www.alchemyofbones.com.., I've been in touch with this author, he posted info on Google asking anyone related to the victims, police, or participants to e-mail him at Loerzel@comcast.net... my e-mail is MaryellTe@aol.com, if you would like to chat, feel free to contact me.

Jacob J. TEWS, wife Anna (LANG) TEWS

I am searching for my TEWS ancestors from Prussia. What I know is my gr-grandfather Jacob J. TEWS,a carpenter, emigrated from Prussia in about 1896/97 with his wife Anna (nee LANG) TEWS and their children, among them my maternal grandmother Lydia Algrepina Anna TEWS (dob Nov 22, 1890, Prussia). Their first recorded address was in 1897 in Detroit MI. Anna TEWS' father was Martin. Lydia married an Afro-American man named Walter Loran BOWLES.They had three children one of whom was mother. Anna TEWS died May 29, 1900 and is buried in Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit. Lydia (TEWS)BOWLES died in July 1927 following the birth of her son. I don't know where Jacob or Lydia were buried. Ther are other TEWS buried in Woodmere Cemetery. I have the names of the other TEWS buried there, altho'I am not sure of their connection to me. Feel free to contact me if
we can make a connection.

Beth Allen
Toronto, Ontario
Canada

Re: Wilhelm, Carl Johann Tews - Kreis Cammin

Marty:

My great grandfather was Jacob J. TEWS (a miller) who was born in Pomerania in 1865 (month and day unknown), very possibly in the county of Cammin. Jacob's father was Carl TEWS. I wonder if this is the same Carl TEWS you refer to in your message as your great grandfather.

I know my great great grandfather Carl TEWS married young and married 3 times. Jacob's mother was Wilhelmina (BARS) TEWS whose date of birth and death are unknown. I don't know who, if any, Jacobs full siblings were.

One of his other wives was Anna TEWS, with whom he sired two children, Edward (dob April 19, 1885) and Emma (dob unk).

I suspect, because of the space in time between the births of Jacob and Edward, that Carl's other wife, whose name is unknown, might have been his second wife, Wilhelmina being #1 and Anna, #3.

Perhaps, the wife #2 was your great grandmother Fredericke REETZ TEWS, making your grandfather Wilhelm TEWS, (born 5 years after Jacob) my great grandfather Jacob's and my step great grandfather Edward's, half brother.

If any of this sound familiar please don't not hesitate to contact me. I would appreciate hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Beth Allen
Toronto, Ontario
CANADA
CARL TEWS and Wilhelmina (BARS) TEWS

I started my search for my Prussian ancestors in 1998. Since then, I
have uncovered a fair amount of information. Could anyone help
me with leads to move my search forward.

I'd like to eventually find the exact area of Prussia where my
great-grandfather and his wife were from. I'd especially like dates of
birth for my gr-grandfather Jacob TEWS and his parents, and any
information on his parents.

Here's the information I have:

Jacob J. TEWS (my maternal gr-grandfather)
Year of birth: 1865
Jacob's occupation: carpenter
Place of birth: Pomerania, Prussia
Parents: Carl TEWS and Wilhelmina (BARS) TEWS
Jacob's first wife: Anna (LANG) TEWS dob Apr. 4, 1869
Jacob's and Anna's daughter: Lydia Algrepina TEWS, dob Nov. 22, 1890
Jacob and Anna's sons: Samuel: (dob?) Arthur (dob 1898 Detroit)
Left Prussia for US (Detroit, MI): between 1891 -1893
Religion: attended both Free Methodist and German Second Baptist
Churches in US

I understand that the TEWS name has its origins in the Netherlands among
Mennonites, some of whom settled in Prussia in the
1600s.

1.What about the surname BARS? Where does this name originate?

2. As I understand it, my great grandparents were not Mennonites, nor
Catholic. I am not sure what relationship they might have had to the
Lutheran religion while in Prussia.

3. What was the religious makeup of Pomerania in the 19th Century?

4. Were there any particular areas of Pomerania where particular
religions concentrated?

5. Were the TEWS or BARS known practise any particular religion, as far
as you know?

6. Were there any Baptist or Methodist churches in Pomerania or any
other part of Prussia in the 19th Century?

7. Does anyone have any connection to the people have have mentioned?

I thank you for any help you might give me.

Beth Allen
Toronto, Ontario
Dale:
The name Craver sounds familiar. My cousin, Dorothy Schultz, married into a family whose surname sounded like your last name. I could not e-mail you directly, your e-mail address may have changed. Anyway, Dorothy's mother, Leona Tews Schultz, lived in Green Bay, Wi., where Dorothy grew up. Later she moved to Florida. My grandfather's name was Robert Fredrick Emil Tews, b. 4-4-1871. ( I thought that he was born in Germany, but his marriage regeister indicated that he was born in Iron Ridge, Wi.- I'm still trying to verify that. Robert had four childre: Leona; Cordelia (Minnie); Carl (who moved to North Carolina); Olga Rose Tews Kleman (my mother). Does any of this sound familiar? My connection is through Lillie Tews and Alfred Stark. They would be my Great Grandparents. My mom was Linda Stark and Grandfather was Ivan Stark ( son of Lillie & Alfred). Most of my relatives come from springfield so have alot of connections their. After the death of Ivan my Grandma remarried Wally Gentz.
