Hi Beverly - I just read your post that you're a Texada from Alexandria, LA. My father was Alvon Clay Keary (his parents were Patrick Foley Keary & Gretchen Lillian Sullivan Keary). Dad's maternal grandparents were Georgia Texada Sullivan & Henry Clay Sullivan. Dad was born & raised in Cheneyville on Catalpa Grove Plantation. I believe Georgia & Henry Sullivan were also the parents to Lolly, Elise & John (who'd be my dad's aunts & uncle). I have a book with photos of them. Any information you could share would be wonderful.

Hi Constance - Boy, I think we might have some common relatives because of the similar names you listed. My father's maternal grandmother was Georgia Texada Sullivan (she married Henry Clay Sullivan). They had several children including Gretchen Lillian Sullivan Keary (my grandmother), Lolly, Elise, & John. I have a photo of Georgia Texada Sullivan in a book. Also have photos of Gretchen Lillian Sullivan, her sisters Lolly & Elise, and their brother John Sullivan. My father was Alvon Clay Keary from Cheneyville, LA (Rapides Parrish).
I am a descendant of Joseph Texada, son of Don Manuel Garcia de Tejada. I am the 2nd great granddaughter of Joseph's daughter, Virginia who married William Case. They lived in the Bayou Chene, Louisiana community which sadly no longer exists as a community. There are a lot of descendants from this line.

Veronica Faith Theriot Pesson

My great-grandparents were Henry Clay Sullivan and Georgia Texada Sullivan of Cheneyville.I can't find alot on Georgia Texada's family yet. Henry was born in Virginia to Martha Williams(listed as mulatto); he also had a brother Robert Adams(I have a close cousin here through the Adams). I assumed that Henry's father was white in Virginia but I don't have any information on him. Henry and Georgia had several children, most of whuch migrated from Louisiana. All of them are listed as mulatto or colored- depends on the census/word in vogue at the time; in Louisiana at that time those lines were pretty blurry anyway. I have some pix I need to post still. They are buried in Edgefield Cemetary for blacks. I went to Cheneyville as a child with my father Joseph Sullivan (deceased) to visit. I know about Lloyd Hall but have not been there. I understand it still functions as a B&B(haunted) and a working sugar farm (owned by another family). I plan to head that way to see for myself since it's not far.

I'm researching my wife's Sullivan ancestors from Cheneyville. White Sullivans from Virginia owned plantations near Cotile before the Civil War, and owned Loyd's Hall Plantation in the reconstruction era, fathering numerous mixed-race offspring with their slaves and (post-war)laborers. (Most of the Sullivans in the census records of that era are shown as mulatto or black). I'm trying to trace both sides, and any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Pam,

WOW...this is amazing. I did post this years ago and almost forgot I did. Yes, we are talking about the same Aunt Tish (as we called her). She was the youngest of I forget of how many children. She was the youngest sister to my great-great grandmother Alice (Holt) Texada--they called her Mother. Aunt Tish passed away last year...She was 103 years old. The last time I seen her was at her 100th birthday bash and she was a spitfire...just like when she was younger (or so I was told)

I'm Shaina Victoria Glass--My mom is Rena Gayle Boss-Victoria--which is the daughter of Ruth B Rosenthal--whose mother was Beatrice Holt Boss--daughter to Alice Texada

I know it's a long lineage.. Guess that makes me the 5ht generation. Still feels like a tight lineage.

I see you are a Texada. What's your lineage. I am young (28) but I have been, I guess you can say molded for learning and sharing our lineage... since I was about 8. That's when they had the big Texada reunion in Los Angelos in the Summer of 88/89.

I have created a tree..it should be online and it's available for I believe all to see that shows the lineage of the Texadas I know of. It goes back to the mid 1600s. I actually research the lineage and my mom even takes us (my siblings) to the Texada graveyard. Why?I don't know but I find it interesting, especially learning about people and their connection to family.

Let me know if I can help or how we can help each other.

Hello Shanina: I found your inquery on the internet, I too have been researching with a cousin the Texada history. I am a granddaughter of Wright Texada, who was a son of Louis and Martha Texada. What I found is that some sectors of the family were also from Mexico, after the war they settle in Rapides Parrish along the bayou. I remember meeting and lots of stories about Shug, Neal, Lutica and Ta-Sweet. My father Clarence Texada, his mother was Carrie St. James-Texada. There are 3 of the siblings living in the Houston, Texas area Odessa, Bennie Ruth (Babysister) and my dad Clarence. Everyone else has passed away within the last 10 years. My dad is 78 yrs. old, Babysister is 77 yrs. old and Odessa is 80 yrs. old. They are still a very close family, the history is interesting and rich. The cousin I refered to, you might know him, his name is (Junior) Lee Dodson, resides in Alexander, La, he is an administrator educator the last I spoke with him, he's an area principal in the Rapides Parrish department of education. His mother was the oldest daughter of Wright and Carrie, Martha nickname was Momah, his brother whom as passed away was Charles Louis Dodson. Let me know if I can be of help to your search, looking forward to hearing from you.
Pam Tejada
Brooklyn, NY

The book you want is "The Wells Family and Allied families"
It has anybody who's anybody in it..
It clears up the fact we are not kin to Rebeeca Wells,(Thank Heaveans) Problems with my other side of the family.. She used Walker stories to tell her story. Teency was my Mother..
Anyway I come through Willie Frank Texada and Kate Malissa Texada who were First cousins. I have 3 sets of grand parents, Trenton LeRoui James and Willie Frank Texada James, George Trezavant Owen and Kitty Lou Borron Owen, (Her mother "Biz" was sister of Willie), and Morgan Wales Walker and Genevieve James Walker, and yes my parents were cousins..
We grew up at "Castile" on the Bayou.. It is no longer in the family..As of this past year..
The origal house was long gone after my parents added on to the house and got a three story plantation looking house in 1973..
My Mom Genevieve, "Teency" got Alice Chilton started on family history in the 60's early 70's.. And together they found many interesting stories..We found our Blonde hair and Blue eyes came from the Texadas. As Mannual Texada was a Blonde Blue eyed man..Funny when you tell people your blonde looks come from Spanish roots..
They say thats why the Texada's are so kooky to much inter breeding..LOL LOL It's always been a family joke, as We're all kin in 3 or 4 different ways and have many double first's..
Genevieve
Hope this helps if you'rre strill out there

Please note, John Texada had two sons named Louis. The oldest (Lewis Emanual Texada) was born to his first wife Lucy Welch (who was white). After Lucy passed away, the other Louis Texada and his younger brother Irving (or Irvin) were born to Mary Butler (who was black). I am a decendent of the black Louis Texada. Most Texada's here are pretty tight lipped as they leave out a lot of imformation not liked.. My mom had started it and I won't to finish it..Thank You
Farangen1979@yahoo.com

There were several Texada brothers who built homes along Bayou Rapides.. They each had a wife and a mistress. Each of whom if you check the cematarties you'll find..They had many children some had more by their mistresses.. I have some imformation on this.. The mistresses were slaves.. As we have many cuz's who are African American..
farangen1979@yahoo.com

All came from Nataza Miss, through Don Manuel Garcia Texada and aquired their land from spanish land grants..

Hi Bonnie,
It's been some years since I've been on here(my deepest apologies) for such a delay. My aunt Neal(Boss) just passed but I know she was named after the youngest child--Cornelius Texada and her first name was Rosa, which she was named after the youngest girl, Rosa Texada. (Her name was Rosa Cornealius but she later changed it to Cornealia. She passed in Sept 2006. My Aunt Bonnie, whose name is actually Luticia is also named after a Texada which is actually the last living descendant of Louis and Martha-her name is LeTesia, she was born in 1902 and she currently lives in Chicago. Keep her in your prayers, she's 104.

We recently loss my Aunt Neal and Aunt Bonnie (Luticia) and well, it brought me back to my roots, I'll say. Neal and Bonnie were the grandkids of Alice 'Shug' Texada. My grandmother was Ruth Boss, also a grandchild. If anyone can give me the next step pass Louis ad Martha I would highly appreciated.

I went through it in 2001 during the pilgrimage with another cousin descended through the Texadas and heard it was on tour again in 2003. Was unable to go in 2003.
Dear Beverly: My gandmother's maternal grandmother was one of the grand daughters of Manuel Gregorio de Texada, he married Josefa Perdomo Xenes in New Orleans on 7-5-1791. My grandmother always told me that her grandmother Lutgarda Navarro y Gregorio de Texada spoke french and that she descended from a distinguished family that settled in Havana and Matanzas after the Luisiana purchase, being loyal to the king of Spain. I have an old photograph of her. Her son, Jaime Tio Navarro settled in Merida, Yucatan, after he fled colonial authorities and fought for Cuba's independence.

My wife, Bonnie, is a descendant of the Texada family as follows: Manuel Garcia de Texada (married Mahala Trevillion), John Augustin Texada (married Lucy Welsh), Joseph Welsh Texada (married Margaret Ker Davidson), Joseph William Texada (married Aimee Preot), Elizabeth Texada (married Thomas Smythwicke Andrews), Aimee Preot Andrews (married William Joseph Bartell, Jr.), Bonnie Bartel (married Thomas Latino). So she's descended from the other son of Manuel. I have a fair amount of information on this side of the family, but not much on Joseph's side from which you are descended. I'll be happy to share whatever information I have that you may be looking for. I'd also like to get further information on Joseph's line after I review what I have so far. Please let me know how I can help.

Bevery, does the bible you mention indicate Joseph Texada's mother was Isabel Garcia and not Mahala Trevillion?

I am a 3rd great granddaughter of Joseph Texada, son of Manuel Garcia Texada.

Thanks!

I am a descendant of Joseph Texada. His daughter, Virginia is my paternal grandmother's grandmother.
My lines goes like this:
Manuel Garcia Texada
his son - Joseph Texada
Joseph's daughter - Virginia Texada - married William Case
Their son - Jerome Case
Jerome's daughter - Sarah Case - married Agricole Theriot

I tried to find the post where Beverly Barrilleaux says that Joseph's mother was Isabel Garcia not Mahala Trevillion and that she has Joseph Texada's family Bible but could not find it. What sort of documentation is contained in the Bible? I would like to know if I should correct my tree but would like more info. It certainly makes sense based on what I know about the tradition of Spanish surnames - something about their last name is their mother's last name and their father's last name. A man from Mexico was trying to explain it to me just a few months ago. (I live in Colorado but was born, raised, and married in Louisiana.)

By the way, the Texada name/line is still very much alive in New Iberia, Louisiana. There are numerous businesses which reflect the Texada name in New Iberia. Coincidentally, my husband's family is an old New Iberia family. I am from Franklin, LA which is 20 miles from New Iberia. My parents, Barney Theriot and Hazel Ashley were raised at Bayou Chene, LA.
