Re: John S. Thacker

FYI - The John P. Thacker in the Lewis County death certificate is my Great-Grandfather and the informant that gave the information was my Grandmother Rhoda Polley. The problem with any death certificate is that the person who probably best knew the answers is dead and the survivors are in shock so information tends to get garbled.

In reality John P. Thacker was born about 1834 in Grainger, County Tennessee to Nathaniel Thacker (born ca 1811) and Polly Belle Johnson (born ca 1816). John P. Thacker's first wife was Lucinda Jane Coyle of Estill County, Kentucky although they married in Laural County Kentucky. I think that the wife's name was probably the source for the mother incorrectly being listed as "Louisa". Than again, it would not be the first time I ran into a family member with a nickname so his mother Polly could have been called Louisa or even Mary Louise.

If you trace my John P. Thacker though the census records it is clear he was not born in 1819. I was once told that the 1819 birth date came from a now lost family Bible and I have reason to suspect that the 1819 birth was a brother of Nathaniel and that my John P. Thacker was named after his uncle.

My unproven speculation has long been that the William Thacker (born about 1806) mentioned as father to another John P. Thacker was also a brother of my Nathaniel Thacker.

The 1860 census record shows William Thacker has a Petis Thacker (born about 1785 in Virginia) living with him. Again my speculation is that Petis may be the father of both Nathaniel and William Thacker.

Obviously I have lots of speculation and little proof so I would be happy to compare notes with anyone else connected with this family. While I can't personally help with a DNA project I would love to see a comparison of DNA from direct male descendants of Nathaniel Thacker, William Thacker and other Thackers from the areas of Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. Maybe we could prove or disprove some relatives.

Daryl Polley

Kentucky didn't have state death certificates until 1911 although some counties recorded deaths. Looking through the records, there is a John P. Thacker, b 1819, died Jan 23, 1923 at age 104, in Lewis Co., KY. Parents were Nathaniel and Louisa, both born in KY. [Probably incorrect.] Also a John P. Thacker died April 12, 1854 in Estill Co., age 23, son of William. There are no John Thacker who died in Warren Co. but many others around the state.

If you haven't done so, you might contact Billye D. Jackson, 3004 Coffey St, Victoria, TX 77901-7400. She has done a lot of work on Isaac Thacker and may be able to help. I do not have her e-mail and the address was current in 2005. I've researched this line trying to find Isaac's connection to Sanders Jefferson Thacker. The two Thackers were always near each other. After 20+ years, no luck. My husband is 86 and in a nursing home. What a thrill if I could find Sanders parents or connection to Isaac R. Any help on that line appreciated!

Do you have documentation proving your descent from John Thacker who was born in Arundel Castle? I've seen several Thacker trees posted on Ancestry.com going back to this John Thacker, but none of them provide documentary proof. And without good documentation, such genealogies aren't any better than fairy tales.
Thanks.
John Mahey

Thank you. I have that info but I wont validate it until I find a rcord that matches my Samuel to the Benjamin I believe your have based on the names of wifes youve given me. Do you have any info on a Samuel Thacker (1777-1859) moved to Walker county, gathering @ 500 acres land near Blue Water Rd in Oakman, Walker County, Alabama when he came to settle? I believe he's buried in the Old Lebanon cemetery but there are so many unmarked graves. Its a shame info on the stones aren't available from our ancestors. If they only knew how interested their descendants are in them, huh!

Can't seem to link him with any other Thacker line. I have had my DNA tested and it is post on the "THACKER" forum under the DNA section. If you know anyone (male) that is a direct descendant of Isaac Reed, please them to have their DNA tested and posted. This is about the only way that I know Of to be sure that here is a link. Trying to get ready for some late summer family cookouts. I will make a special trip this coming week to my sisters, to get most of my research.

My sister took an interest in the family tree and she has been doing some reading and searching as well. As we are looking for info from before 1633 AD in England.

Thanks,

Steve

Thanks so much for the link to the library at Stephen F. Austin. Is there any way to access the records other than going there in person? I see so many of my family names in these records. The Sanders Thacker vs Isaac R. Thacker case is interesting. One of the cases in 1841 was Performance Bonds: Joseph Ship to William Weeks. I've been trying for years to find the parents of Isabella Weeks who married Samuel W. Horton. Does anyone know what a performance bond was?

Lynda Langston Fredendall
Atascadero, CA

I realize this is a really old posting, but if you should get this, could you email me your tree? My husband's grandfather was John P. Thacker, William's brother. I wonder if that is why he named my husband Charles?? I've found lots of relatives of his and Charles and his brother Paul never knew they had any relatives still alive. Their father was Melvin Thacker and I take it he was a loner. They grew up in Waverly, Ohio and there was family all around. Thanks, Jenny Thacker

He had a son Willima Thacker born about 1690 and died in Hanover Co., Va between 1767 and 1768. William had a son named Benjamin born between 1720-1730 in Albemarle Co, Va and died there 4/19/1798. This Benjamin was married to Ruth Bowles, Aggy Agnes Baily and Neffeny Emmerson. I don't have and children except Nathaniel David Pettice Thacker born 3/8/1761 and died Feb 8,1818. Haven found many middle names and there were lots of Johns,Williams, and Nathaniels in the family. Hope this helps. This is my husband's line.
