I am searching for info on the children of these two. I know that they were living in Tn.or Texas in about 1911 and were married in Spencer County Indiana in 1857. Christopher c was killed by a train in Waco,Texas in 1911 while visiting his daughter. I would like to find out who this daughter is and what happened to her and the other children. Did they all live in Tn. or in Texas? What happened to Mary Jane?.Did she die in Texas or Tn.?. Anyone know?.... Thanks Chris

Thanks for the information, when I get time I will look for Effie's burial site. Do you think it is Indiana?
Have you looked for sites or records in Michigan for your family? There is a Larry Bean living in Schoolcraft, Michigan, grew up in Plainwell, Michigan.
I also have several old pictures of people I can not identify, could these be Tharp's or Strong's. If you are interested I could mail you copies.

Thanks but i do not think this is the correct William i am looking for. The one in the 1850 census in Harmony, Ky says he was born around 1822. Do you have anything anround that time frame? Some things i have found show KY and others say VA. Any help as you can tell would help

I think this is the information your looking for.William Thorpe:born 1734,Augusta co. Va. Died april 1794,franklin co.Va Mary Elizabeth Starr:born 1754 in England,died Nov.1 in Lee co. va.Hope this helps you,the spelling of the name varries among my relitives but they are the same lienage.

I am sure that your THARP / STRONG is in my family line. Have found that they were actually married in Michigan. Have the record. Lost direction with William after Effie died in Calhoun Co., Michigan. Lula Tharp Jackson is my grandmother. Have been trying to find where she is buried and where he moved to? Made we can work out a direction, between the two of us.

I'm sorry, but I have no further information on the Tharp family other than the obituary on Christopher Thorpe that I posted. I believe Christopher was a son of Susan and Ferdinand Tharp. He was a cousin to my wife's grandfather. Since I posted the obit, I did get the date and newspaper it was published in. It was published in the Rockport, Indiana Journal on Friday, September 30, 1960. Also, according to the funeral home record Christopher's date of birth was February 21, 1875, date of death was September 24, 1960 and he was born in Indiana. Unfortunately, his parents' names are not shown on the F.H. record.

Ephraim Tharp was married to Elizabeth and had the following children, Jonathan was born abt 1770 and died BEF 1831 in Alexandria, Hunterdon, NJ. He was married to Nancy Crowford 3 May 1801. (II) John C Tharp was born 25 Jun 1771 in Alexandria, Hunterdon Co, and died 1835 in Hunterdron Co, Nj and was married to Rachel Perry. (III) Ephriam Tharp was born abt 1774 and married Sara Pickett in 1799. (V) Mary Tharp born 1780 died 1857 and married John Rockerfeller. William Tharp born abt 1772 and was married to Mary. I have no information on Elijah.

I have circumstantial evidence of the connection and the marraige certificate of John identifing the connection. I need help on the marriage and Williams parents. According to www.jordangenealogy.com Lavina was dau of John2 who was b DE and m Leah Morris of Bevans in Sussex Co.
John2, son of John1, was the brother of my ancestor Ruth (Tharp) Long. I have not traced the family members who left DE. They are found in OH, IN, IL and NC.
John2 also said to have had son John3.
Gary Tharp's tree on RootsWeb World Connect is reliable.
Maybe this will give you some ideas to search.

Oliver Tharp is my G-Grandfather. My grandfather is Oliver's son William. I can't began to tell you how I've looked for the information you have provided. My father told me his Grandfather Oliver was buried in the Smith Branch cemetery and the military had provided the tombstone.If I remember correctly, my father's story was that there was a deserter in the war,in our family, and that is how our surname went from Spencer to Tharp. Where did you get your information? I would love to hear from you.

Hi Robert,
I believe you are correct. Charles E Strong, Effie's brother, was my great grandfather. I have the family living in Westville,IN in 1870 and in 1880 although Joel R Strong passes away by then. My Great Grandfather married Jennie Bean and they had two children, John Francis and Harry E. John Francis is my Grandfather. Charles was an engineer for the Michigan Central Railroad. He died in 1910 due to complications of diabetes. He was living in Marshall Michigan at the time of his death. He is buried in Marshall along with other Bean family members.I have not been able to find Sarah or Joel in the 1850 census.

Was just wondering if you know that Ia. was abbreviation for Indiana until sometime in the late sixties or seventies when it changed to In. The cities and counties you speak of are very familiar to Indiana. Most of the Tharp's came through Va. to North Carolina to Tn. and on north and west. I have a George W Tharp but he does not fit you 1817 birth time. I am searching this line also and do have some info on the Tharp's in Indiana,Tn,Ky. I would like to share notes with you. MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Eva E. Tharp, 90, of Muscatine, formerly of Keithsburg, Ill., died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at the Muscatine Care Center.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church in Keithsburg. Burial will be at Greenmound Cemetery in Keithsburg.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at the church. Memorials may be made to Keithsburg Fire and Ambulance or Muscatine Care Center. Trimble Funeral Home in Aledo, Ill. is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Tharp was born on Feb. 28, 1911, in Bedford, the daughter of William and Lilly Belle Dickert Kenney. She married Kenneth S. Tharp on Dec. 29, 1928, in Monmouth, Ill. He preceded her in death Aug. 29, 1988.

She and her husband farmed near Keithsburg. The couple also managed several restaurants, including the Old Highway Inn in Viola and the Pancake Corral in Colorado Springs.

She enjoyed taking care of her home, sewing and was a great cook, canning hundreds of quarts of vegetables every summer. She also enjoyed playing cards and bingo.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Keithsburg.

Survivors include five daughters, Dorothy Harader and her husband, John, of Aledo, Esther Gibbs and her husband, Richard, of New BOSTON, Ill., Doris Whitesell of Rock Island, Ill., Marna Stewart and her husband, Gene, of Keithsburg, and Mary Gilmour of Rock Island; five sons, Roger Tharp and his wife, Linda, of Aledo, Marvin Tharp of Taylor Ridge, Ill., Jim Tharp and his wife, Peggy, of Biggsville, Irvin Tharp and his wife, Kay, of Keithsburg, Franklin Tharp and Becky of Seaton; a daughter-in-law, Donna Tharp of Viola; a sister, Alice Muhlenburg of Aledo; 39 grandchildren; 75 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Lyle Tharp; brothers, Tom, Wayne and Chester Kenney; sisters, Helen La Rue, Effie Willitts and Jenny Thurston; three grandsons; and a great-grandson.

She taught in country schools prior to her marriage.

She was a member of the Moscow United Methodist Church and its ladies aid.

She loved quilting, flowers and chickens.

Survivors include a daughter, Jean Smith and her husband, Jerry, of Wilton; three granddaughters, Jill Lafrenz and her husband, Tom, Joanne Holem and Jodi Helmold and her husband, Jeff; a sister, Elsie Tobias of Muscatine; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; four sisters, Eva McKillip, Ora McKillip, Alice Atkins and Grace Strause; two brothers, William McKillip and Mark McKillip Jr.

Linnie Tharp, age 100, of Muscatine, died Thursday, October 12, 2000, at the Crescent Care Center in Muscatine.

Funeral services will be at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Mark Romano, Anthony Romano, Dudley Coker and Steve Tharp. Burial will be in the Parr Cemetery.

Linnie was born June 27, 1900 the daughter of Jacob and Agnes Kosnopfal Sanders. She was united in marriage to Thomas Tharp on April 4, 1922.

She loved her family very much and had many, many friends. Linnie worked at the Weber Button Company for many years and was secretary for two unions. She loved her crossword puzzles, crocheting and was an avid poetry writer.

Her family was blessed to have such a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Linnie will be dearly missed by her son, Richard Tharp of Edmond, Oklahoma; a daughter, Pat Marshall of Illinois; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1984 and a brother and sister.

I hope I am doing this correctly. My great grandfather was Hatford Tharp (I think) and his daughter, Minnie, my grandmother. If this does turn out to be the case, my great great grandfather was Asa Tharp and my grandmother, Susan Tharp. But, as I said earlier, I cannot find much info on this family at all. I think that Hatford Tharp may have been my grandmother's father. Her name was Minnie - she was born about 1891 or 1892 in Ross County Ohio. She married Charles Lee who died in 1922. I have been able to find virtually nothing more on her family. Any information would be appreciated.

Tharps in Northumberland/Lycoming PA late 1700's

I am trying to locate information on the Tharp families that lived in Northumberland or Lycoming Counties in the late 1700's. Tharp male adults of that time included more than one William Tharp, George Tharp, Philip Tharp, Eaton (Tharp?) Thorp, and maybe a few others. Can anyone tell me names of Tharp children born during the 1780-1795 time period in that area? I can find almost nothing on these families! I am especially interested if there was a Sarah or Johannah (Hannah) born during this time. Thanks.

His father was name Ephriam born 1750 and died 1818 in Hunterdon Co. NJ. He was a shoe maker.

I have a David Tharp(thorpe) in my family. He was possibly from PA and moved to KY sometime before 1889. He married a Sarah Elizabeth Smith. My g-grandmother, Augusta Amanda Tharp(Thompson) is the only child I know of that they had together.

They lived in Clermont, Ky and also Jefferson Co. KY, where my g-grandmother was born. This is far back as I have gotten with my grandmothers maternal side. I really dislike brickwalls! lol

For 15 years I have researched this line and have obtained much all with a paper trail. Tom Tharp sent me what he had after I found the marriage of Mary Fletcher to Benjamin Franklin Tharp born 1836 in Hardy Co.,WVA and who served in the Civil War, Ashby's Rangers and the 11th Calvary. After the Civil War he then went westward to the Territories. I found Benjamin in CO and NB following the MO and Platte Rivers where my great grandmother married a James Kilgore and later a Sederquest. Benjamin F. Tharp was found today and I also obtained his death information and the cemetery where he is buried. I am trying to find Tom Tharp who was gracious to me and gave me so much and when I can share the information with him I will share with others.
He had stated that Benjamin was married prior to Mary Fletcher and he was correct as I found that information as well. Benjamin F. was the brother to Hiram Tharp and 8 siblings, his parents were James R Tharp and Druzilla Hulver/Hulvy.
