My great grandfather was Edward Thode. He was born at Hadein(or Hadeln), Otterndorf, Hannover, Germany. He came to U
S through Charleston, SC in the late 2850's and was there until 1865 when he came to Galena, Il tojoin brother August. Their mother, Marie Einstein Thode also came there around that time. Her husband, John Jacob, died in Germany. There was a brother, Henry, who came and stayed in NYCity. also a brother, Carl, who I know nothing about. One of the sisters, Catherine, married a Nicholas Schroeder and they came to US on the same ship as Marie. Another sister was Caroline. If this ties into your family let me know at Sansu4023@aol.com

Thanks so much, Paul. I had not seen or heard anything about Frances in so long that I feared she had "crossed over" -- it sounds like in one way that may have happened --and what a loss. I never got to know Ange, whom my mother loved. Back when I had half a brain, was out doing something else all the time and now that I am among the folks, I am senile!
One of Aunt Lena's descendants (Alice Ann Jones Richard)is also collecting "tree" info so you may run into her if you haven't already. Am so sorry Freddy is dead because HE knew stuff too.
Stay in touch -- would love to know what you learn --
Love,
Dot (Bitsy)
Frances is still around, but the last time I asked her something about family history she said "My brother John would know". Unfortunately her brother John (my father) passed away in 2007. I'm very painstakingly trying to remember and piece together things that he told me. I'm writing down some of his stories and working on a family tree.
Be well,
-Paul

So many long and sometimes heartbreaking stories in this family. I think Frances Fricks probably knew more about us than anybody and I never got to spend the time with her that I would have loved. Somewhere there was trunk of old letters and papers, some in German, that I think came down through Aunt Lizzie. All that stuff is so precious to me, but I am so old and half-witted now that I am very glad someone else is the "archivist." The Caroliniana at USC has a lot of Thode stuff, as I am sure you know.
Thanks so much for the cemetery link -- will use it and also pass it on to other searchers among us.

Thank you Dot, I was hoping that you would answer that one. My father (John R. Fricks) visited his cousin Elizabeth Thode several years ago. She was 95 at the time and offered to take care of her four year younger cousin. Your reply also cleared up my question as to where Betty Thode Hoadley fit in to the mix. I've visited the graves of the Thodes buried in Walhalla, but wasn't sure why Fred wasn't among them or where he ended up. A lot of the Thode graves in St. John's cemetary are on the Find A Grave web site and I added a a bunch of the Fricks' (including your Aunt Leassetta Thode Fricks link http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSmid=4...; ) buried there.
I hope that you are well.
Henning Frederick(Fred)Thode, MD, b. 1887, d. 1944, is buried in the Stokely Family Cemetery in Del Rio, Tenn. His sister, Elizabeth Thode Hoard, will be 102 on April 20, and lives in Arden, NC.
Fred's daughter, Elizabeth Thode Hoadley, lives in Walhalla, SC.
Can't begin to count up the possible "Elizabeths" among the offspring of Henning Peter Thode, but there are a lot of children of the current generation. And, this is a family that in old SC fashion does tend to name its children out of the cemetery.
The Elizabeth tradition, though, I suspect comes not from the German Thodes, but from the old-line South Carolina Garvins and Claytons. Elizabeth Clayton was Fred Thode's great-grandmother on his mother, Lillie Garvin's side, and that family has carried a lot of influence through the years.
Most of the Walhalla Thodes are buried in the churchyard of St. John's, on West Main Street.

As an FYI, Henning Peter Thode has a two year old great-great-great granddaughter named Elizabeth. The third or fourth Elizabeth in the family.

My grandfather was Otto Fricks (b. 10-Nov-1886, d. 18-Jul-1951) I always thought that he was the eldest child of my great grandparents J. L. O. and Leassetta (Thode) Fricks. I have discovered that my great grandparents had two other children, Ellen Fricks (b. 11-Feb-1881 d. 31-May-1882) and Freddie Fricks (b. 13-Oct-1888 d. 23-Jan-1889). They are buried in the Baptist cemetery on North Catherine St. in Walhalla SC. in the same plot as my great-great grandparents Joseph and Rebecca (Ivester) Fricks. Any information on these children would be appreciated. Oddly enough, my father and I passed within a few feet of their graves (before Alzheimers made swiss cheese of his brain) and I didn't know at the time of their existence.

Well, the Thodes came to the U.S. from Northern Germany in the 1830s or 40s; apparently the politics got hot for them. Henning Peter (my great-grandfather) was an army officer and sometime about the time of their removal to Charleston he married Catharine Dorothea von Stelling. The John Jacob of my direct ancestry was their younger son and he was born in Walhalla, about 1860, after their colony (including the Schroeder clan) migrated toward the mountains and cooler weather. I would bet on their connection with yours. Interestingly, they stuck to family names -- in every generation including the children of today are several Catharines or Katharines, etc.
The Caroliniana Library of the University of South Carolina has a Thode collection that would probably include lots of things we would like to know -- if ever we can get to it.
Although my earliest THODE ancestor that I know is John Jacob Thode, I dont think that we are related closely. My John Jacob was born about 1797-1803 and died ?. Both of these happened in Germany. His widow came to US with (it looks like) Dau. Katherine Thode Schroeder and family and went to live with sons August and Edward in Illinois. August did come to the US through Charleston, SC about 1857 and then to Illinois in 1866 to join the family. He was alone. Are there any SC Charleston records of this time that might mention him beside the 1860 census where I think I found it.

Dear Dot,
Thanks for E-mailing me back. I'm new to this geneology thing but if I have it right Lizzy would be Lizette W. Thode Fricks who married J. L. O. Fricks, they had Ottoi Fricks who in turn had Cassie Fricks who in turn had Arthur Otto Roach who is my father. I've never met him but I know he stills lives in Walhalla. If this is correct maybe I could get some information from you to put in my family geneology I'm compiling for my two daughters. Thanks

We may have spoken before but in the event I haven't...
my dad always told me exactly what this last message of yours states. My great, great grandfather was Theodore Thode, born in Hamburg circa 1830 (according to the census) and married Margarate (?) had at least 3 children., Fredericka, Martin and Henry August (my ggrandfather) all born in NY. I have reason to believe he came over in 1850's. He was a tailor in Brooklyn, his daughter was a hatmaker.
Does any of this match up with your family? My father knows that there were Thode relatives that migrated south , possibly Florida, and I can account for all of Henry August's children. What i don't know is what happened to Martin, Fredricka never married.
Thanks for checking.
Please contact me if you had any Thode's living in Florida in the 1920's or 30's. I am looking for a family that had two Thode boys in the Merchant Marines. My great uncle was invited to a family function via a formal invitation back then, for the Thode family. My father remembers the gold print on the invite. This would be a connection to a branch of my Thode family. We are primarily New York residents. Thanks!

Hello,

My Henry August Thode was born in New York (maybe Queens or Brooklyn)) in 1871, he had a sister Fredericka and a sister Hazel.Fredericka was a miliner or hat maker and never married. Hazel was born with some type of disability that required her lifelong care. She died in Islip, N.Y. My dad seems to think there was at least one brother because some of the Thode family moved south and were involved in a trucking business(???). My dad remembers that his uncle Ted Thode was invited to an upscale party down in Florida in honor of a Thode....
My Thode family came from the area of Otterndorf, SH, Germany, which is right on the N. Sea coast near the mouth of the Elbe River. At least that is where my great-grandfather Edward was born, and his older brother, August. Edward came through Charleston, SC, but as far as I know was not related to the people in this area. Arrived by 1858 and went to Galena, Jo Daviess Co. IL by 1866 where he married Augusta Henrietta Mensing. Brother August was already there and probably their mother, Marie (Einstein) Thode by this time. Father John Jacob was born and died in Germany before the family came over. Family records show brother, Henry, in NY City with wife Eliza Lohman and 3-4 children. 1881 census show a Henry with wife Eliza and child Charles, which is said to be one of children in Manhatten, think this is the correct one. Anyone descended from them? There were several girls too, one married a Schroeder (prob. in Germany). Their daughter, Caroline, is shown in Edward's family in 1881 census. Anyone related? One source said part of family went to Winona, MN and know two of grandfather's brothers went to the Minneapolis, MN area. Years ago was in contact with a Jerry Kelly in that area. Believe brother who went there were Charles and Edward, but not sure of this.

Susan

He then came to Jo Daviess County, Illinois to Join brother Augustus. Mine was Edward. Another brother, Henry, came to New York City, and as far as I know stayed there. Don't know by what route Augustus came to ILL.

See first message in this string for my linage. Our name came to the US with the pronunciation, Toad-eh or Toad-ee (long e sound) . Then in the next generation it changed to Thod-eh or -ee. Then in my grandfather's generation the end vowel was dropped and is now Thod, without a final vowel sound. Mine is German, but can't tie to another family from Germany, or the Danish family in the next town, tho far enough back I am guessing we are somehow related. Still looking for info on John Jacob (Johann Jakob??) Thode and Marie Einstein. Two sons were born in the Hadein, Otterndorf, Germany area, which is on the North Sea(southern) coast. Any help greatfully accepted.

Perhaps there were other children who had married and moved out? Your relatives? Without going into detail now, those names repeated amongst the children. Theo, Martin, Henry, Fred and Fredrica, and Charles. I will share dates etc if they are of interest to you/connected. Ask me anything. My dad is aging and this is one of his riddles.

We are related!!! My dad who turned 76 this month had confirmed many years ago, he knew her, that Aunt Rika was a excellent miliner and her father,Theodore was a tailor. What I know for a fact is that Theodore Thode born ca 1830, immigrated to the US from Hamburg in 1851. He died in 1909. I have a copy of his death certificate. He married a Margarate, born ca 1830 in Preussen and she died in 1895. I am sending for a copy of her certificate this coming week. I do not know Margarate's maiden name. What I DO know is that Theodore's father's name was Herman Thode. Theodore and Margarate had at least 3 children. Fredrica, Martin, and my great grandfather Henry August. Fredrika never married but I know she cared for a nephew Martin and a niece Hazel. My dad remembers that Hazel was mentally challenged and required care. I believe that Martin and Hazel were children of Martin, or there may have been another son also named Theodore. The nephew Martin was considered to be a little odd as he at times lived with my great grandparents in Southampton, and tried to borrow money from my grandfather because he had invented a new kind of money and created a new way to "write music". He may have spent some time in military prison.
My dad had the feeling that somewhere along the line, there was a falling out, perhaps between Martin senior, Theodore his father and or my great grandfather. My father believes that there were at least two male Thode's who were Merchant Marines in Florida. He was only 10 - 12 years old when he heard these stories so they are sketchy.
What I am sure of is that Florence was not a child of my great grandfather's because my dad grew up knowing all of his aunts and uncles. I am inclined to believe that Florence could very well be Martin's child. I think he married and Emma/Emily. Can you get a death certificate for Florence? It may give you a ton of info. Let me know how you make out. If you send me a direct email address, I can scan and send you a copy of Theodore's death certificate.

There's a very good possibility that my grandmother, Florence (Thode) Foster is a descendent of your gggrandfather, Theodore Thode. At this point I'm trying to determine who her father was. It very well might be Martin, son of Theodore. Would appreciate any info you could provide. Also, I notice the surname Davis on your query; how does this name connect with you?

My grandmother, Florence (Thode) Foster lived with her husband, John B. Foster, on St. John's Place in Brooklyn.
I had limited contact with them after my father, Theodore,
passed away when I was very young. I've just started to research my father's family and remembered that I still had in my possession the last will and testament of my great-
grand aunt, Emilie Davis, who left me a very small sum of money when I was about 17 years old. However, I don't remember ever meeting her nor my grandfather but perhaps I was too young to remember them. Emilie's will contained names and addresses for the year 1957 and that's where I came upon the maiden name of my grandmother Foster. So it appears we might be onto something.

I found helpful information on the 1930 census which indicates that my grandfather Foster was an insurance adjuster. I found Florence (listed as Flossie) on the 1900
census with her sister Hazel and Martin who is listed as being age 45. They were boarders with Fred and May Albrecht
which leaves me at a dead end for Florence's parents. One last thing, Harry Thode was also know as Harry Hart????

She also had a sister Hazel. On the 1900 census she lived with Fred and May Albrecht, German immigrants. I notice the name Albrecht is also mentioned on this website?

Thanks for responding so quickly. I have been working on the parents of Florence Thode but yet to confirm their names. I have sent for the marriage certificate for her and her husband, John B. Foster, but that will take more than a month to receive. I would very much like to have a copy of Theodore Thode's death certificate and you can contact me directly at Rooty@aol.com. I 'm pretty sure that Martin is her father. The marriage certificate will show the names of the parents of both bride and groom so that will be the key for me.

Florence was the executrix of her Aunt Emilie Davis's last will and testament and according to your message just received you mentioned that Martin MIGHT have married an
Emily/Emma which may add another peice to the puzzle. So there is much left to be uncovered. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Susan -

I haven't replied because we were on vacation to Germany and we visited Otterndorf!

I have a researcher in the area looking into "Maschmann". He took us right to the "dike area" you mentioned and said that my greatgrandfather was from this area. He caled it Wehldorf. "Wehl"s (pools of water) are formed by the water coming over the dam in storms hence the name. It's right on the Elba River, a few small towns west of Otterndorf, and east of Cuxhaven.

Here's the website for Otterndorf. http://www.otterndorf.de/ Maybe you could contact them and ask them to share your e-mail with St Severi Kircke, the church in Otterndorf. (I looked for an e-mail address for the church but couldn't find one.)

I'll ask him about Hadeln or the Hadein area you mentioned and get back to you.

Feel free to e-mail me directly (emashma1@nycap.rr.com).

Ed
