I have researched the Minnesota - German origin - Thoms of the Carver Co. MN to Long Prairie, MN area. They lived on the county line border or went to church around Morrison Co. / Todd Co. MN, living on farms. I have researched and read the the newspaper of Oliver Co. ND as Theodore Thom went there about 1900. I have researched the other Thoms who came from Scot origin and settled in Long Prairie, MN in town, as far as I know.
Looking for early history before 1900 of the Thoms in our branch and to continue forward.

Would love to exchange information. Do not have address for Wilhelmina Thom in Milwaukee since that was just a brief stop when she first came here. I am hoping to link up the Thoms in Minnesota. Believe they are all related somehow. Let me know what information you would like. Thanks.

She was a nurse in WW2 and I have a photo of her with Field Marshall Bernard Motgomery, I think she was in the 1st No1 Scottish General Hospital ( Territorial Force) In Egypt And Cruden Bay in Scotland.
Thanks for the reply, you are right either Alexander Thom could be James Thom's Father. Does any one else have any ideas on the subject. In the 1851 census James Thom was living with George Stewart 29 and Christian Stewart 28 in Marnoch Banffshire and was listed as a Nephew.

I haven't been able to confirm that this is the same Alexander Thom on James's Marnoch Birth registry. The natural father, Alexander, is listed as being from Gartly, about 12 miles from Marnoch geographically. BUT, there is an 1841 census record listing an Alexr Thom living in Gartly, Aberdeenshire residing with a Margaret Thom, aged 70. There were two Alexander Thom(s) born in Banffshire about the same time: one to the parents, George Thom & Margaret Milne, in Rothiemay, Banff (hence the 1841 reference) and the other to the parents, Alexander Thom & Isobel Ritchey, in Marnoch (my family). Either one could possibly be James's father. Sorry I can't be of any help.

Have seen Wilhelmina Thom coming through Carver Co. MN ... to Fredrick Grosenick ... date of 1859 marriage and finding them in Todd Co. MN comes to mind. August Thom and family came about 1861. Men seem to be in the Civil War -- Carl, August & ?. Maybe the names are duplicated.
Do you have documentation of Milwaukee residence?

I have only searched for the Civil War soldiers on the films, index of CWSS names and in the WI Adjutant General Report. The book gives some dates of Enlistment and Discharge.

Would like to exchange info. Can you post using "Messages" area in the Header (above) by your Log In?

My great grandmother was Wilhelmina Thom who came from Germany in 1871. First locating in Milwaukee, then to Carver county and then to Todd county, Minnesota. Her death certificate lists her father as August Thom but I am looking for siblings. A Charles Thom lived near them. The census in 1870 has a Wil, Louis and a Ludwig in Carver county in 1875. In 1885, Charles, August and Theodore were in Todd County. Then another Charles is listed in 1900. There was an August Thom who died in Long Prairie in 1885. A Charles Thom who died in 1900.

The mystery of Annie Thom

Added by caley76 on 26 Jan 2009

There is still a fair amount of mystery surrounding Annie Thom and her life before coming to Edinburgh.

In 1926 Annie moved to Edinburgh from Huntley (unconfirmed) with 4 of her Children Alistair, Jean, Catherine & James.

Indeed the greatest of these mysteries may well be the identity of Alistair & Jean both of whom were (as far as we are aware) her children.

Catherine and James always new Alistair & Jean (Jeanie) as her older brother & sister. We have been unable to confirm the identity of both the older sibblings, (no birth certificates etc.)

We have found various census connections which shows a Jennie ''McRobbie'' living in the same house as Annie in Kinnethmont, Aberdeenshire.

Family legend has it that Alistair & Jean moved to Glasgow not long after arriving in Edinburgh and that Alistair became a missionary in Africa?

There has been no contact with then since 1929!

Mystery also surrounds the father(s) of Annie's children: -

Alistair (surname unknown) possibly Robertson

James Thom, (possibly Robertson or McPhee)

Catherine McPhee Thom (residence 1912 Torry Street, Huntly, Aberdeenshire)

Any assistance with the above queries would be greatly appreciated as we have found our selves stuck after many years of research

Does anyone have information on a John Thom, born abt. 1786 in Scotland and his wife Mary, born abt. 1798 in England? They lived in Bolton, Lancashire, Eng. I can find them in the 1841 England Census, but I was hoping to learn more about them. I would like to know if a George Thom, born 1814, in Bolton could be their son. I can find George and his family in the 1841 census as well. George, his wife Martha Whittle, and their child came to the U.S. in 1848. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Time of construction 1888. My great Uncle, Patrick Henry Egan, Alexander’s future brother-in-law helped Alex build the barn when he was 12. Patrick HenryEgan was one of Maggie’s baby brothers

From a list of mayors of North Bend, Nebraska: Alex Thom, mayor, 1908 Alex Thom, mayor, 1918 Alex Thom, mayor, 1919 Alex Thom, mayor, 1920. "ALEXANDER THOM came to Nebraska in January, 1882, and after having long been actively and successfully identified with agricultural and livestock industry in Dodge County he retired from the farm and established his home at North Bend, where he has since continued to enjoy the merited prosperity gained through former years of earnest endeavor. He has passed the psalmist's span of threescore years and ten and is a sterling citizen to whom is accorded the fullest measure of popular esteem. Mr. Thom was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, September 25, 1847, and is a son of William and Christina (Chalmers) Thom, who there passed their entire lives, the father having been fifty-three years of age at the time of his death and the mother having passed to eternal rest at the age of sixty-eight years. William Thom was a farmer by vocation and both he and his wife were zealous members of the Free Church of Scotland, in which he served as an elder for a number of years prior to his death. Of the six children three came to the United States: William, who became a resident of Nebraska and whose death occurred in a hospital at Omaha, December 13, 1919; Isabelle, who became the wife of James Thain, of Illinois, and who was in the home of her brother, Alexander, of this review, at the time of her death; and Alexander, whose name initiates this sketch. Of the other three children, James and George died, in Scotland, and there Andrew has been for half a century pastor of a church in Stirlingshire, as a representative clergyman of the Free Church of Scotland in that section of the land of hills and heather. Alexander Thom was afforded the advantages of the schools of his native land and there continued his association with farm enterprise until 1877, when he came to the United States and became foreman of the large farm estate of Henry B. Sherman in Dodge County, Wisconsin. He retained this position five years, and in January, 1882, he came to Nebraska and became associated with the firm of Smith & Mallon, at North Bend, an important concern engaged in the importing of horses. In the interests of this firm Mr. Thom purchased high grade horses in Scotland and shipped the stock to the United States, his operations in this field of enterprise having continued about four years. He then purchased land in Dodge County and turned his attention, with characteristic vigor and judgment, to general farming and stock-raising, in which connection he made a specialty of raising blooded Clydesdale horses and Chester White swine. On his farm, comprising 320 acres he made the best of improvements, including the erection of a barn that is still considered the finest in the county, and he continued his active work on the farm until 1892, since which time he has lived virtually retired, at North Bend, his farm property still remaining in his possession. Mr. Thom was one of the organizers and incorporators of the First State Bank of North Bend, of which he has continuously served as president from the inception of the enterprise and to the success of which his mature business judgment and conservative policies have contributed in large degree. He is an elder and member of the board of trustees of the United Presbyterian Church at North Bend, and as a citizen of his adopted state he is most loyal and appreciative. In 1887 Mr. Thom wedded Miss Margaret Maggie Agen,[sic](Egan) a native of the state of Illinois, and she passed to the life eternal in 1892. Of the three children of this union two died in infancy, and the one surviving is Mabel, wife of Dr. Andrew Harvey, a representative physician at Fremont, judicial center of Dodge County, of whom mention is made on other pages of this work. For his second wife Mr. Thom married Anna Collins, and she passed away a few years later, the only child of this marriage likewise being deceased. April 15, 1913, recorded the marriage of Mr. Thom to Laura Miller, who was born and reared in Dodge County and who is the popular chatelaine of their pleasant home. Mr. Thom is a radical prohibitionist in his political allegiance and has been active and zealous in furtherance of national prohibition, the success of the great movement being a source of marked gratification to him. He has a high place in the confidence and esteem of his home community and the year 1920 finds him serving his third consecutive term as mayor of North Bend." This newspaper clipping is from the North Bend (Nebraska) Eagle, undated http://www.hmca-il.org/l_wgtho2.htm
George Thom

I am sorry that this is long, but hopefully the information may be of use to others. My interest lies with George Thom born about 1845. I think that he last appears in the records in the English BDM Mar-APR-MAY 1909 Thom George 64 Gateshead 10a 587. Tracking back In the census 1901 and 1891 he is living in Durham, although at two different address. One of his daughter is named as Mary R in the 1891 census, but her name is Nena Riddle Thom. Two of his daughters were born in Gloucester (1886 and 1888). In the 1881 Scotland Census George Thom was living in Hawick, Roxburghshire. According to the census two of his children were born there, Maggie Jane (1879) and James John (1880). Before that, I think that George Thom appears in the 1861 census as the son of James Thom, the Superintendent of police, living in Hawick, Roxburghshire. Any information about George Thom (born Aberdeen 1845), his wife Mary Jane, (born Waterbeck, Dumfries-shire 1853) or George parents James Thom (born Aberdeen 1819) or his wife Jane (born 1814)

John (Jack) Vincent Thom Help!!!!

Ok I am at a dead end. My great grandfather's name was John ( Jack) Vincent Thom. He married my great grandmother Irene Renee Cameron August 5 1924 in Vancouver BC Canada. He was from Scotland but immigrated to Canada probably around 1910(this is an educated guess.) We know nothing of his history as he refused to tell anyone. My Aunt(his daughter) says he was probably illegitamate and that is why he never told because he was a proud man. My aunt says he came to Canada as a young boy he had a heavy Scottish accent. He worked as a farm labourer in Saskatchewan Canada. My aunt also said he used a fake birth certificate to get into the military for WWI although she says from the pictures that he looked old enough. His wife also swore that he was older than he said he was. I cannot fathom the idea why he would use a fake birth certificate if he was old enough?
If anyone has any idea or insight into this mystery ????

Hello, I am researching Rymans and found this post. Another Ryman relative with Thom last name might be connected to you. His posting name is Daniel_Thom. He is definitely my relative, maybe yours also. Hope this helps.
Iam looking for Ira F. Ryman who could be related to Robert Ryman, clues are appreciated. Our family came from Indiana and landed in Americus, Kansas. I hope our connections are successful.
Doone~~
