OK, we have to have a link here. I'm looking into my husband's Thomasson family. The furthest back I have James Edward Thomasson, born july 22, 1875 in VA, married sometime around 1905 to Hattie Jane Harris who was born between 1878 and 1880 in VA. Hattie, according to my mother-in-law was the daughter of Frank Harris and Mary Jane Harris, cousins. Mary Jane also was married to a McGee and a Lumsden and there is a tie to Poindexter I haven't pinned down yet. Does any of this fit?

I believe my grandfather was James Edward Thomasson and lived in Bumpass during this time. He had eight children, four boys and three girls. The boys names were Robert, Tom & Elwood (twins), I don't recall the other boy's name, but he died in a grain elevator fire in Newport News in 1934. The girls names were Lee, Ethel, and Caroline. ALL of his children are now deceased. The family moved from Bumpass to Salisbury, Md. for a while, and then settled in Warwick Co. Va. in the town of Hilton Village around 1929.
I know that James Edward Thomasson was a traveling salesman, and I believe worked for International Harvester for a while..

Sorry, I never met him, but I believe he died in the mid to late forties. I was born in 1944 and am the son of Elwood T. Thomasson, one of the twins. They did not live in Sailisbury very long. After my Dad died in 1983, I drove up to Bumpass on my motorcycle, and found a farmer working in a field. I asked him if he knew where the old Thomasson homestead was, and he pointed me right to it. It was an old two story log cabin, which I assume still stands today. James Edwards first wife died, and he later re-married. I do not recall the name of either wife, but my brother has the family bible, and I believe all of that information is in there. I will check with him within the next day or two and let you know. There were five brothers instead of four. The one who got burnt up in the fire in 1934 was named George. The youngest brother was Julian, who everyone called Randy. Four of the five brothers died of heart conditions, and my father had an aneurysm.
Ivy Lee was the last of the brothers and sisters to die, and died about five years ago. Descendents of Tom, Elwood, Lee, and Ethel live in Newport News or Hampton. I have lost touch with Bob's child (Fay), and Randy's kids (Linda Jo and Monty). Caroline (Tootsie) never had children and I don't believe George was ever married. I know that James Edward had a brother named Reid (Reed) who lived in Richmond, Va., and I visited him once back in the early 50's. Hope this information helps you some, and I would be curious to know anymore about the family if you could fill me in...Oh, by the way, my great grandmother on the Thomasson side lived with me when I was very young. I do remember her--her name was "Budgy" and she lived to be 3 weeks shy of 100. She died around 1951 or so.. I understand that she once killed a slave with a horse's whip...

Then Betty Lee must be your mother-in-law and I assume you are married to Russel Smith....I got an e-mail from Betty the other day.
James Edward's second wife was name Mary, but I do not recall the name of his first wife. I also believe that he had a sister that was a nurse and served in World War I...I think her name may have been Sallie Bett, but I am not sure. She was gassed with Mustard Gas and settled in Chicago, and I think wound up in an institution somewhere. There is also a cousing living here, perhaps on Uncle Reid's side, name Edwin Thomasson. He may be able to suppy an awful lot of missing information...

My branch of the Thomasson (yes, double s)has been traced as far as George Thomasson in late 16th Century England. I have a two volume set of the book "Thomasson Traces" which has a reletively complete tree back to George of Sutlow, Cheshire. His son George was born in 1592 and died in 1666. He became a well respected printer and bookseller and there is large and notible collection of English Civil War pamphlets in the British Library. One of his sons, Thomas, came to Virginia 1677.

Finnish? No. Try Swedish. Sweden you see more name endings in "son". Denmark "sen".

I have always been told my lineage was English. George Thomasson of London I belive.

Keep in mind,Viking names became English names from the invasions. Many English however dropped the "son", "sen".North England you see more however.

It is technically an English name.

Keep in mind early American mispellings by census takers...Thomason became Thomasson, Thompson etc.etc.
