First Generation

1. Thomas THOMPSON- was born about 1750. He died 1795 in Potter Twp, Centre Co, PA.

History of Centre and Clinton Counties, page 30. Thomas Thompson of Lancaster County mentioned twice as father of Robert, Nancy (wife of Aaron Hardin), Prudence, and Catherine. Order of children not known. Robert listed first, then three females, but Nancy's marriage listed as 1806 likely making her the eldest. No spouse mentioned for Thomas. Date of death 1795. My guess is that Thomas's wife died before he moved from Lancaster County to Centre County. Resided in Potter Twp, Centre County.

He had the following children:

2 F i. Nancy THOMPSON- was born about 1780 possibly in Lancaster Co, PA.

Nancy married (MRIN:2569) Aaron HARDIN- on 27 Nov 1806 in Centre Co, PA. Aaron was born about 1780.

3 F ii. Prudence THOMPSON- was born about 1782 possibly in Lancaster Co, PA.

+ 4 M iii. Robert THOMPSON- was born 2 Mar 1786 and died 23 Sep 1869.

5 F iv. Catherine THOMPSON- was born about 1788 possibly in Lancaster Co, PA.

Second Generation

4. Robert THOMPSON- (Thomas) was born 2 Mar 1786 in Lancaster Co, PA. He died 23 Sep 1869 in Lawrence Twp, Clearfield Co, PA and was buried in Mt Joy Cem, Lawrence Twp, Clearfield Co, PA..

Robert married (MRIN:1676) Catherine WANTZ-, daughter of Christopher WANTZ- and Margaret- (MRIN:5574), about 1808 in Centre Co, PA. Catherine was born 4 May 1786 in Potter Twp, Centre Co, PA. She died 9 Sep 1874 in Fox Twp, Elk Co, PA and was buried in Mt Joy Cem, Lawrence Twp, Clearfield Co, PA.

Aldrich's 1887 History of Clearfield Co. indicates that Robert moved from Lancaster Co to Centre Co, (possibly Potter Twp) as a child. He resided in Howard Twp as a weaver until moving to Fox Twp, Elk Co in 1824. About 1860, Robert and Catherine moved to Lawrence Twp, Clearfield Co. where they resided near their son Isaac.

1860 Census of PA, Schedule 1, Free Inhabitants in Fox Township, Elk County, PA was enumerated June 5, 1860 by J.C. McAllister, Assistant Marshal, Post Office, Kersey. Peter is listed as head of household in 1860 Census of PA as resident of Fox Township, Elk County, PA. Lived with his wife, and ten children. Listed as a farmer, 47 years of age. Dwelling House is #111, family # 113. The value of real estate is $1600, value of personal estate $500. All persons in household listed as born in PA. Age of eldest son (Prochorus Milo - my great-grandfather) is correct on census in comparison to other records therefore assume other ages fairly accurate. None listed as having attended school during the year.

Dates for birth, marriage, and death from the Family Record hand-lettered by Merton James Thompson (RIN 350) about 1912.

9 M iv. Simon THOMPSON- was born 9 Nov 1814 in Centre Co, PA. He died 18 Feb 1911.

Simon married (MRIN:4629) Ann THOMPSON- on 25 May 1837. Ann was born about 1814.

George also married (2-MRIN:4558) Margaret BARNETT- on Apr 1880. Margaret was born about 1817.

11 M vi. Reuben THOMPSON- was born 16 Sep 1818 in Centre Co, PA. He died 22 May 1891 in Winslow Twp, Jefferson Co, PA.

Reuben married (MRIN:4566) Margaret MCINTOSH- on 7 Apr 1843 in Fox Twp, Elk Co, PA. Margaret was born about 1818 in Ireland. She died after 1898.

Robert married (MRIN:4567) Mary E. DANIEL- on 5 Feb 1848. Mary was born about 1825.

Isaac married (MRIN:3878) Matilda REAMS- on 27 Mar 1851. Matilda was born about 1828.

16 M xi. Nelson THOMPSON- was born 20 Jun 1831. He died 8 Apr 1909.

Nelson married (MRIN:4358) Martha BAILEY- on 26 Oct 1869. Martha was born about 1831.

I am a descendant of Peter THOMPSON and his second wife, Eliza Dixon.

Geraldine Hatt (RIN 2189) remembers a teacher from Port Allegheny, Elk County, who was a granddaughter of Peter Thompson. Her name was Annie Thompson. Perhaps born about 1875, because she was older than Edith, Geraldine's mother. Annie was unmarried.

Family history states that Peter was married three times. The first wife died in childbirth and the infant also died. The second wife had one child who survived and her date of death suggests that she died with a second pregnancy or birth. The third wife not only had thirteen children, but outlived Peter by many years.

History of Centre and Clinton Counties lists many Thompsons as early settlers of the Penn's Valley area. I do not know which, if any of these, are related to my family.

A Captain William Thompson served with General James Potter about 1758.

Page 15: William Thompson was a new settler in the Potter Twp. assessment in 1774. He had one horse and one cow. William Thompson was also listed as an early settler (with the McNitts) of Armagh Twp in Mifflin County, indicating that the lines of Potter Twp extended to include the east end of the Kishacoquillas valley.

Page 17: Inhabitants of Potter Twp Sept 20, 1776 included William Thompson Sr. and Jr., Thomas Thompson, John Watson, and Hugh Moore. These names are on file as an application to the Commonwealth for arms and ammunition for themselves and for powder and lead for the Indians to enable them to get a living without going to the enemy for a supply.

Page 24: When Mifflin County was erected, March 19, 1789, that portion of Potter Twp of Northumberland County bounded eastward by a line running from Nittany Mountain, southerly by the head of Penn's Creek and Spring Mills to the Seven Mountains, and westerly by a line from the end of Nittany Mountain to Tussey, had inhabitants that included: Abel, James, and Joseph Moore; and Henry and Thomas Thompson. From Spring Mills eastwardly (that part of Potter Twp which remained in Northumberland County) resided John Watson.

Page 39: April 1798/99. Residents of the newly formed Centre Twp. included Hamilton Moore, John Moore, (each had 1 cow); John Thompson-20 acres cleared, a cabin 1 horse and 4 cows; William Thompson-10 acres cleared, cabin, 2 stills, 1 horse, 1 cow.
