Etna Alice Thornburg of OR, CA & WV

I am trying to break through a brick wall. If anyone has a lead on an Etna Alice Thornburg who moved to West Virginia from San Francisco in the 1960s, I would be grateful to hear from you. She passed away in 1983.

Here is what I know so far"

"Etna A. Thornburg [Etna Alice Rearick per birth certificate; "Ethna N." (sic) Thornburg on the death certificate] was a long time resident of Lane County, OR, where her parents finally settled. She married a man named "Thornburg" of whom nothing else is know [save that he might have been a Naval Officer] and lived in San Francisco during the 1950s. They were divorced (date unknown) and on 7 Nov 1967 a social security card was applied for on her behalf by an "H. V. Johnson (Guardian), of Eugene, OR." According to her death certificate, she lived in Walton, Roane County, WV and died in the Riverside Nursing Home in St. Albans, Kanawha County, WV. Beyond the above, nothing is known of her life from about 1930 until her death, including how she wound up in West Virginia. According to her death certificate she is buried in the Orma Cemetery, Orma, WV."

(Though she was buried with her second husband Nehemiah Cheesman)

I look forward to news of this obituary that you mention.

I have been gone this evening and it's too late to look it up now about the 1913 date and his location, but I think I got it from an obituary that listed Jesse C (Jessie)as a survivor of William and gave his city of residence. I will try to locate it tomorrow. It is a coincidence that I am going to the Indiana State Library tomorrow with some friends and we are all going to do some genealogy research. I wasn't sure which family I was going to concentrate on - maybe doing Thornburgh reasearch would be appropriate.
Did you know that one of the wrought iron gates into West Lawn Cemetery in Hagerstown has the name Thornburg(h) in very large letters over it? Can't remember if the "h" is included.
Glad to find a relative, as I don't have any that I know of at all on my father's side.

Jesse and Margaret Warren Thornburgh were my great-great grandparents. I have noted that Jessie Thornburgh, son of Jesse and Margaret, was married to Emeline Wright and had children: Charles,Josephine, Orville, Ulysses, and George.
Jessie lived in Richmond, Indiana, as late as 1913. I know he survived his brother, William.
You might try Richmond, as his burial place, but it is located in Wayne County also. Good luck.
How are you related?
I noticed that his name has been spelled Jessie, rather than Jesse, his father's spelling.

I'm looking for information regarding the burial of Jesse Carver Thornburg of Hagerstown, Indiana.

I know that his parents, Jesse (Sr.) and Margaret (Warren) are buried at West Lawn Cemetery in Hagerstown, Indiana. As are several of Jesse C's brothers and sisters. But Jesse C is nowhere to be found. I've checked "Tombstone Inscriptions in Wayne County" by Beverly Yount and come up empty.

The Indiana death index gives his place of death as Stony Creek Township, on 6 Jan 1918. A search of all transcribed cemeteries in the Stony Creek area, even the greater Madison County produce no Jesses.

Would anyone be able to point me to a good place to keep looking as to his wherabouts? Any guesses on what newspaper an obituary might be found in?I'm not from the area, so I'm not certain.

Elizabeth Thornburg

Thanks for posting that information. It will help immensely in giving me more confidence that I am researching the right family and heading in the right direction.

I have found Martha Webb's grave, but no trace of John Henry Thornburg's grave. She is buried at the Old Shelby Cemetery in the same area as her son, AA Thornburg and his wife, Evie Ezekiel Thornburg. Also buried there is AA's first wife, Nancy J Hardy, as well as Lois Thornburg, my mother's older sister who died as an infant. She is in an unmarked grave.

Do you have any idea as to where Ellis or John Henry are buried? Any other information you may be willing to share would be very much appreciated. Thank you so much!

I'm not even sure if they are my ancestors. I've been told that my GG-grandfather was named Ellis Thornburg. My grandfather was Miller Gid Thornburg, born 1894 and died 1964. He had sisters named Viney and Doll, and brothers named Frank, Al, and Andrew.

His parents were John Henry Thornburg and Martha Webb Thornburg. I have been told that his father's name was Ellis, but the only Ellis Thornburg that I've found through census records that seems to be my Ellis was married to a woman named Amanda. This was found on the 1870 Census of Madison County, Alabama. Here, John Henry (listed as Henry) is listed as being 13 years old, with parents Ellis (47 yo), mother Amanda (40 yo), brother Gabriel (17 yo) and brother Martin (10 yo). I am almsot positive that these are my people, but I have also seen records of an Ellis Thornburg married to a Melvina Cabott with names of children very similar, sometimes identical, to those of Ellis and Amanda. Could Amanda have been a first or middle name of Melvina Cabott?

Fields B. Thronburgh

Filed B. Thronburgh was a part of the family of Lewis Throneburg Jr. The Thornburg/Throneburg research group headed by me has been working on this. Lewis Throneburg Jr. is a probable son of two likely brothers Frederick D. Throneburgh/Tranberg and Ludwig/Lewis Thronebarger/Tranberg Sr. who came from Pa. to North Carolina in ~1775 along with their sister Christina Barbara Tranberg Beaver. Because of German naming customs it is possible that Lewis Throneburg Jr. could belong to either family. However, due to the estate papers of Ludwig/Lewis Thronebarger Sr. we believe he is likely the son of Ludwig/Lewis Sr.

If you contact me via email I will help you put Fields B. Thronburg's family together back to Lewis Jr.
rthornbu@hughes.net

Martin Luther Thornburg and Daavid T. Thornburg

I am seeking any member of the Martin Luther Thornburg family of Madison County, North Carolina. Or the David T. Thornburg of Madison County, North Carolina and then Tennessee. MArtin Luther had several sonsClaude, Willlie, Ernest, Carl, Paul and Robert L. David had sons Herman and Luther.
These two men are sons of William Thronburg/Thornburg who I have traced from 1818 to 1891. William Thronburg first married Catharine P. Sigmon in 1840 North Carolina in Lincoln County. He then married an Eliza A. and had MArtin Luther and two daughters. He then married an Ida Fann in 1887 in Greene Co., Tennessee and had David T. Thornburg. The Thornburg/Throneburg/Throneberry/Thornsberry reseach group has information that places him as a son of Leonard Thornburg ( 1796-1873) who moved to Washington Co. Tennessee in 1847.

Along with the research group there is a big Thornburg/Throneburg family in North Carolina that would like to get in touch with you.

Re: John Thornburg of North Carolina

Tom and Lorelei,

I hope you will contact me again as we have had a breakthrough in our Throneburg/Thornburg research of North Carolina. Due to DNA testing and a genealogist's report we have obtained we now know that the information in the Trarbach research report is wrong and most of the Gaston/ Mecklenberg Thornburgs and Throneburgs descended from Lewis Thronebarger/Dronebarger. Lewis and his likely brother Frederick David Throneburgh had several sons. We know that John B. (Lee) Thornburg of Mecklenberg County, Fields B., Samuel Lewis and possibly Jacob M. Thornburg(Administrator of Sameul Lewis' will) are sons of a Lewis Throneburgh who married a Nancy Johnson. We are unsure if this Lewis is Lewis Thronebarger/Dronebarger's son(most likely) or David Throneburgh's son.

I have been in contact with John Lee(B.) Thornburg's son and have obtained a copy of the Bible pages for John Lee's(B.) family (his children). I will be glad to share them.

Again, please contact me and I can give you a complete update on the family.

Ron Thornburgh
rthornbu@peoplepc.com
THORNBOURGH-FARRINGTON

I am very interested in the THORNBOURGHs and FARRINGTONs as I think I am descended from "Elizabeth Thornbrough: Born 24 3rd month 49 N.S. or 12 1st month 1748/9 O.S. Guilford Co., NC Died perhaps 26 Sept 1840 Reported married out of unity 23 2nd month 1765 New Garden MM, Guilford Co., NC. Disowned 30 3rd month 1765 New Garden MM, Guilford Co., NC Married to JOHN FARRINGTON".

The above is what I have found, but I have not been able to prove that they had a son Jehu (not John) Farrington born ca 1766 or even who their children were.

Does anyone have proof of relationship between Jehu F. and his possible parents, John F. and Elizabeth T.?	I am very interested in a Jehu FARRINGTON (1766-1861) who had three or more wives. I have not been able to prove any connection between Jehu and his possible parents, John and Elizabeth.

Jehu first married circa 1795 to a Ester Charlin (Carley, Charlton ?) possibly in York Co., SC. I am not even sure of her name. He married 1817 in Morgan Co., GA to Lucy Adkins, widow Jeremiah Miles. He then up and married to Margaret Lee in Alabama in 1841.

William

Anyway she married John Carter in Guilford County, N.C. I believe 6-20-1821. When they moved to Kansas she died there in 1868. They were Quakers. Is this a connection to your Thornburghs?

Thanks for responding. I am glad to finally get an answer from the family. I have been in touch with those Thornburgs that live in Grand Junction, Col.
Since this post in 2004 I have had an answer and have traced this family's ancestry down.
Garth and Vance Thornburg are part of the family of Throneburgs that came from Lincoln/Catawba County in 1847 to Indiana. Daniel Thorneburg Sr.'s first son David was Garth and Vance's ancestor.
If you are interested in the family please let me know.

I have traced their ancestry from David to his first son Joseph Hile Thornburg to Jewell, Kansas. Can't remember the rest and I have my files packed up at this time because I was just at a reunion where I shared all of my information on the family.

Frederick David Thronburgh/Tranberg of NC (pronounced the same) was the father of Daniel Throneburg Sr. Daniel had several sons.David, Elias, Daniel Jr. and Leonard. Elias was my gggrandfather. Daughters were Margaret, Mahala and Rhoda.

This family is truly much larger than most realize. Through DNa testing several of us have proven that Frederick David Thronburgh and Ludwig Thronebarger of North Arolina were related as brothers or first cousins. Ludwig,s family surname ended up as Throneberrys ( TN.), Thornsberrys(MO.) and Thornburgs(NC).

If you are interested in more information on the family I will gladly provide it. I hope you will share what you know about Garth and Vance's life and children......

Sincerely,

Ron Thornburgh
rthornbu@peoplepc.com

Anderson, IN Thornburgs from Central Christian Church

In my search for Harry Hyman Hirsch, I have been trying to find descendants from his "foster family" that I discovered in Anderson, IN. The pastor of the church and one of the office staff have graciously reviewed their records for Thornburgs and Harry Hirsch. Here is the information that they have provided to me. My hope is that it provides some help in another's family tree search.

"We have membership records dating back to 1900, but there are some years (1910 to 1920) that are missing, or I haven’t found them yet.

I found a Mr. & Mrs. John R. Thornburg joined the church in April 1871. There is a notation that Mrs. Thornburg was deceased and John R transferred his membership to Downy Ave. Church in Indianapolis is Oct. 1957. I’m not sure if these were related or not. There is no first name for Mrs. Thornburg.

The next record I found was Katie & Bertha Thornburg joining the church. There is a notation of the letter dated May 4, 1903.

Also Guy Thornburg & Mrs. Lizzie Thornburg joined in March 1902. Also listed were Mr. Frank Thornburg, Emma, Ruth Guy & Edna. It shows Guy & Edna lived in Indianapolis.

There is a listing for Herbal Thornburg (there is no date).

It shows J.R. Thornburg died 9/16/47, Mrs. J.R. died 8/11/47 and Kate died 1/28/49. Martha Thornburg Gregg is listed and she died 11/27/31.

I have a record dated in 1938 for Mary Joan (Staley) Thornburg & Wayne E. Thornburg. They transferred to a church in Michigan in 1964.
Etna Alice Thornburg [nee Rearick]

I am looking for information, especially for the spouse, of Etna Alice Thornburg. She reputedly married a US Naval Officer sometime after 1930.

She was born Etna Alice [aka Edna or Ethna] Rearick to William Riley Rearick and Lelia May Spores, on 28 Feb 1910 in Hoquiam, Grays Harbor County, Washington. She grew up in Lane County, Oregon and died in Apr 1983 in Clay County, West Virginia.

This is a dead-end for me, so any help would be appreciated. Either post here or contact me through my Ancestry.com profile.

Guidance

I am 16 years old and my name is Victoria Thornburg. My family seems to know absolutely nothing of our ancestory, but I am eager to learn more about my origins. All we know is that the Stoaks'(My Mom) married the Thornburgs (my dad) and that my grandma lived in Iowa. As you can see, I really don't have much information, so I would really like some help with this.

Here are the records I have:
1860 Cherokee Co, Ala
Thornsberry, Ellis (42) born TN occupation: MB Clergy, wife:Lavinia (43) born TN, children: W P (21),Andrew L (16), Allison T (14), Gabriel (12), Ellis (8), Henry (4), Martin (1).

1870 Madison Co, Ala
Thornburgh, Ellis(47), wife: Amanda(45), children: Gabriel(17), Henry(13), Martin(10).

1880 Cherokee Co, Ala
Thornburgh, Ellis(62), wife: Melvinia(60), Martin K(20)
Thornburgh, Henry J(24), wife: Martha(18), Andrew A(8mos)

I am assuming that Lavinia, Amanda, and Melvinia are the same person due to the age. The 1870 census is off, but it seems to be off for everyone. Maybe one of the children gave the info to the recorder? I am also unsure of where "Cabott" came from. I do not have it on any of the records that I have.

Allison Templeton Thornburg (married to Martha Emma Moore)is my gg grandfather who was Miller Gid's brother.

I have a tape recorded conversation about John Hnery marrying a Webb that I am working on posting so that others can try to make sense of it.

Happy Hunting :)

I have the census for years 1860, 1870, 1880 and also the civil war records. I don't seem to have Melvina's last name on any of those. Do you have records that I have missed?

Re: Guidance

Hi Victoria,

I don't know if I can help you or not, but my Thornburg's lived in Iowa as well, so I will try. Hopefully, we can connect and get you on your way to learning more about your family.

Do you know if your Thornburg's happened to be of the Quaker Faith? Do you happen to know your grandmother's and/or grandfather's) name? Where did your Dad grow up? Was your mother from the same place as your father? Where and when were they married?

Rule of thumb is to begin with you and work backwards. I know this will be difficult for you since you are so young, and census records are not available for more recent years yet. Do you have any relatives you can talk to that might know more than your parents do regarding your grandparents? Where were you born; where was your dad born; get a copy of your dad's birth (and death, if applicable) certificate. Sometimes you can find out a wealth of information on those.

Let me know what you find, and we'll see if we can figure out where to go from there.

Good luck,

Jan Lopez
jslopez@cox.net
Just wondering if you found any info on Charles Thornburg. I have Charles in my genealogy records but just name only. His daughter in law, Addie Lou Purdy was my great aunt, her sister Lennie Mary Purdy was my grandmother.
