Looking for some info on my great great grandfather Frank Bartlett Thorndike, born: 08/18/1882 in Maine and took residence in Camden, Maine. This appears to be the only missing piece of my tree and I have put countless hours into finding his parents with zero luck. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

Greetings,

I am a direct descendant of John Thornidke. I have only recently taken an interest in the family history. I have several letters from a great, great aunt to my father (who passed away three years ago) containing some family lore.

Here is my lineage:

John
Paul
John
Robert
Ebenezer
Joshua
Joshua
George
Charles
Faunce 1889-1969
Faunce 1929-2006
Bruce b 1960 (myself)

I now have one son, Mitchel, born 1990.

Thanks for your posting, David

Bruce Lane Thorndke

Re: John THORNDIKE born 14 Feb 1839 Tetford ENGLAND

Hi Paul-- I've gotten some things straightened out since I wrote yesterday (I've been working hard at it!) I found out that some of the original information I was working with was incorrect. My great grandfather's name was James, not Charles, and he was the younger brother of John. I found a lot of great information through the Ripon Public Library site. They also had a brother named William. The family came from England in 1853, and according to the records I read, they were originally from West Keal, Lincolnshire. Their parents were William (1815-1888) and Elizabeth Thorndike (1814-1909).
I also found a record of an 1838 marriage between a William Thorndike and Elizabeth Stanney, but do not know yet if I'm on the right track with that. The date seems right, as John was born the following year, and it took place in that area (Spilsby). I'll let you know if I find out anything else. Please let me know if you have any new information on this branch of the family tree. Where did you find the information that John was from Tetford? thanks-- Elise

Hi Paul-- Sorry I can't help you with info on John Thorndike's parents. I am just starting to trace my lineage and think that there is a chance that John Thorndike is my great-great-grandfather. My great-grandfather is Charles Thorndike from Ripon, Wisconsin. I have his date of birth as 1845, which couldn't be right if John is his father. Do you know who John's children are?

Thanks-- Elise Rugolo-Crowe

My grandfather is Ralph Dale (1881-1966), Romauldo's brother. I am thinking that Ashley married Mary Frances Crocker (1844-1920). I am having some trouble following her lineage. Doe's anyone have information on the Crocker line?

Best wishes,
Craig

OK....First, I think the third son's name is John Scott Thorndike b. 11-Jul-1963 (brothers are Charles Morse Thorndike II b. 4-Dec 1949, and Romualdo Philip Thorndike Jr b.17-Jan 1952.)

Second, I think your grandfather is William THOMPSON Thorndike.

Third, I think the reason you "lost" Philip is because his real name is Romualdo Philip Thorndike (there was a real string of them dating back to your great grandfather)

Finally, I think your relative Charles Morse Thorndike is different than my Charles M Thorndike. Although we're related, it's pretty distant. Hope this helps.

Hello Adam, I happen to be the 6th great grand child of Sarah Thorndike, born about 1735/6 in Beverly, Ma. to Herbert and Abigail Thorndike. She married Dominicus Sewall on Feb. 28th, 1758 in Beverly. Before the Rev. war they moved to Canada and Changed the name to Sewell. This must make us very distance cousins. If you would like to share family history feel free to contact me. sewells3@home.com

John Thorndike, born probably in Lincolnshire, England and buried at London, England, 3 November, 1668, was the second son of Francis and Alice (Coleman) Thorndike of great Carlton and Scamblesby, county Lincoln. He married, probably at Salme, MA, Elizabth Stratton, born in England about 1614 and presumably deceased by 27 July 1668, daughter of John and Anne (Dearhaugh) Strattoin of Shotlley, county Suffolk, England.
John Thorndike's parentage and his Englisdh adncestry, for several generations, are concluysively established by the weill of his brother Herbert Thorndike, Prebendery of Westminster Abbey, London. In this instrument, Herbert directs that he be buried "between Doctor Nurse and my brother John Thorndike in the wawy from my lodging to the church" and he leaves substantial legacies to "my two niecesd Alice and MArtha Thorndike" daughters of John and Elizabeth (Stratton) Thorndike.
It has been stated that he came from Ipswich, county Suffolk, England in 1629, but this has not been verified. SDavage, in his "Genealogical Dictionary of New England," conjectures that he came with Wintrhop's fleet in 1630, which seems quite reasonable in view ofs the fact that he was in Salem in 1632 when he had evidently attained a considerable degree of prominence, for in 1633 he was named by Governor Winthrop, Junior, to plant a colony at nearby Agawan, as Ipswich was then known. While one of the original settlers of that place, he appears on the early records as grantee and grantor of land in Salem, the transfers involving tracts in sections which subsequently became South Danversd and Beverly. Beverly is described in the deed as "a certain breadth of the the Sea at Patche's Beach and a good way back as far as Beaver Pond." Here, in that part of Beverly known as "The Cove," he built his house, in which he lived until his departure for England in 1668.

Hello David, I have found Thorndikes back to William born abt,1454 in Little Carlton Lincolnshire, England. One of his sons was Herbert born abt 1518 in the same town. He married Janet Nicholas. They had a son by the name of Nicholas born 1535, in lincolnshire, who married Frances Southey. Their son Francis born 1569/1570, married Alice Coleman. They had a son John, born in Lincolnshire in 1603. He married Elizbeth Stratton. John died in Beverly Ma. on July 27th 1668. They had a son Capt. Paul born 1643, in Salem, He married Mary Patch. They had a son Capt. John born Jan. 22nd, 1674 in Beverly. He married Joanna Larkin. Their son Herbert born Jan 3rd, 1707/8, Married Abigail Ober. They Had a daughter named Mary or Sarah born Jan. 13 1734 in Berverly, who married Dominicus Sewall ( Sewell) on Feb. 28th 1758 in Beverly and moved to Canada before the revolution. I may have a few dates wrong as I have been up for a long time and have a hard time seeing the keys. I have tons of info on the Sewells if you would like this information. I am trying to find out who Dominicus's parent were. I have heard that they were Thomas Sewall and Mary Norton but can't prove it yet. William Sewell

This is the first time I'm been able to post a message for a while, my hard drive crashed.
My Thorndike info comes from a book "The Descendants of John Thorndike". It was privately published by a Dr. Thorndike from Bar Harbor Maine. I found it in the Maine State Library and was suprised to find my mother's name listed as the 11th generation. Her father was Charles Jesse Thorndike born at Seattle, Washington January 20, 1897. He married my grandmother Katheryn (Koenig) Lesser. His father Charles Aldelbet Thorndike was born Aug. 15 1868 in Hayward California. His father was Edward Adelbert Thorndike born at Camden Maine Feb. 25 1842. He left Maine in early manhood and settled in Seattle where he was the last Marshall under its town government and the first Chief of Police under its city government.

I am seeking a copy of the book you mentioned. Is that the one by Morgan Hewitt Stafford or is this a different book? Either way, I am very anxious to obtain any relevent material . Thanks! Anne Thorndike (Mrs. Charles Morse Thorndike) Also, can you find any reference to my husband's great grandfather Romualdo Pacheco Thorndike?

Hi, I am Anne Thorndike. My husband, Charles Morse Thorndike is a direct descendent of this same line. John Thorndike's son Capt. Paul was the father of Ebenezer who was the father of Ashley Clary Thorndike, who was the father of Romualdo Pacheco, my husband's great-great grandfather. His son Charles Morse was his grandfather for whom he is named. Could you please help me find a copy of the Thorndike family book that has been passed down. My late mother in law, Evelyn Ouelette Thorndike was very involved with the family geneology and all I have to go on are scraps of paper and pictures I found in her things. I would like to create a master chart to frame and leave to my nephews (next generation Thorndikes). I am particularly lacking in our branch after Ebenezer. Can't find any info pertaining to Ashley Clary or Romualdo Pacheco other than the Crocker family book. All help and replies welcome. I am enjoying meeting all of my new relatives, thanks, Anne Thorndike
