I've made a terrible mistake in thinking that the North Carolina (Duplin, Sampson, and Johnston County) Thornton's were related to the Rhode Island Thornton's. I somehow misread the DNA chart and thought they were grouped together but they're NOT. Needless to say, I did some extensive research on the RI Thornton's and below is what I found in case anyone is iterested.

Here is what I have on the Rhode Island Thornton's.

Generation No. 2

2. John2 Thornton (John1) was born circa 1634 in England2, and died 1695 in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island3. Notes for John Thornton:
John Thornton immigrated to Newport in 1648, at age 14. (Not confirmed) Although this would seem to indicate that he was not born in Rhode Island but most likely England. I have later found a record of immigration stating that John Thornton immigrated in 1639 at the age of 5 with the primary immigrant also being named John Thornton (his father perhaps?) [Filby, P. William, ed., Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s, Farmington Hills, MI, USA: Gale Research, 2006, Place: Newport, Rhode Island; Year: 1639; Page Number: 288, Immigrated in 1639.].

The LDS Family Search site lists a John Thorneton christined 3 Aug 1634 in Cockerham, Lancashire, England with his father being John Thorneton. There is a second Johes Thornton listed, christened 07 Dec 1635 in Laughton by Gainsborough, Lincoln, England with his parents listed as Johis Thornton and Sensae.

He immediately began to practice in Chicago, where he opened an office. At a later date he entered into partnership with Justus Chancellor, under the firm name of Thornton & Chancellor. Mr. Thornton has made a specialty of corporation and real estate law and is recognized by the bar and real estate men as an expert in corporation and real estate litigation. He has not avoided the other branches of his profession, however, and his success in criminal cases has been repeatedly demonstrated.

In recent years Mr. Thornton's time has been largely engaged in cases brought against various corporations under the Sherman Anti-Trust Law, the Valentine Law of Ohio and the anti-trust laws of New York and Michigan.

In 1895 he was appointed by the governor of Illinois a member of the state board of education. He was a prime mover in establishing the college preparatory school of Chicago and the truant schools of that city. In 1895 he framed a teachers' pension bill, and through his efforts and influence the bill was enacted in the legislature, His work in the board of education has been of the greatest benefit both to pupils and teachers in the public schools. In 1897 he was appointed by Mayor Carter Harrison, the corporation counsel of the city of Chicago. In 1889 he was elected president of the board of education of Auburn Park. Afterward he served as member of the Cook county board of education and of the board of education of Chicago.
