If you'll Google the Florida State site, and go to the county history section, you can bring up counties as they were then. Many counties have changed over the years, and I, too had this problem early on. The community may not exist anymore, but you can find where it used to be, and extrapolate the current county.

I am trying to locate a cemetery/burial site for a distant cousin, Daniel McCarty Fitzhugh THORNTON, born 10 Nov 1800 Caroline Co., Virginia, died 12 Oct 1865 Florida. All I've been able to find out about where he was buried was on several sites...Micauba, Florida, nothing else. I haven't been located the area on the internet yet, so was turning to this site to see if someone knew either where Daniel is buried or where Micauba, Florida is. I sure would be much appreciative in any assistance. Thanks so much.

Hi Lisa. A little more about the Thorntons of Ontario. John Thornton and Frances Bowler arrived in Canada in 1829 (from yorkshire) and brought 13 kids with them. I believe these were: Samuel, William (1819-), George, Elizabeth, Caroline, Richard (1820-) married Maria Powers, Jabez (1824-) who married Rachel Jane Kelley from a neighboring farm and THOMAS (1823-) who married Susanna Powers. Some of these children moved to the USA- Jabez for sure. I have been researching the family of Thomas Thornton and have further information. Please contact me at gspark@shaw.ca

Right.. Thornton/ Wilkerson's can even be listed as mullato which is a term for person's also having Native Amercian ancestry. I have wilkerson, and thornton's in my family, and i'm currently in the process of trying to find out the other surnames that could be related to me through that connection. I just learned we had 4 different tribes of native americans between both my grandparent's side of family from my mother's lineage. I was told we were of native ancestry when i was young boy, and thought we just had only two tribes in our ancestry but, I was supprised to know it was four tribes after learning this from my aunt recently. If there's an oral tradition in your family, that only means they had to hide who they were in those days, and to keep their heritage alive they had to pass it down by oral traditons. Quick note If their skin was a little darker, or light brown they would of been seen as black, and more likely listed as "negro" many times even if they were full blood, or had any amount of native blood. Vise versa if they were native american and could pass as white they would be listed as such. Often times being native american but, listed as black, mullato, or white meant you lost your blood quantum, and identity. Therefore leaving many native americans ancestors no choice but, to create the oral tradition to make sure that their families never loose touch of who they were even if they were lost on paper. many had to hide thier race, or intermarry just to hide themselves as being native american. I beleive alot of wilkerson's and Thornton's are of native american decent. My family members are from walnut grove, granville, oxford, and tally ho region of North carolina so especially the Thornton's and Wilkerson's from this area, i would like to see if we can connect with any info. "people" learn your history, and who you are the ancestors are calling you to come home to lift them up and be proud after a dark moment in time.

I believe I can give you information, not necessarily proven, on descendants. You probably have seen the same information about Lucas and Thornton that I have seen on the World Connect site. I do have proof of descendants of children of my Mary Thornton and husband William Scott who m. 1816 in Mason Co., KY. I have been skeptical of parents of my Mary, but children of my Mary Thornton and husband William Scott had a land transaction handled by a Daniel Thornton in Putnam Co. IN when they lived in Macon Co. IL. Since James Thornton and Mary Lucas are reputed to have had about 14 children, a Daniel and Mary among them, I am inclined to believe these are my Mary's parents. Glad to share what I have and would appreciate knowing your sources, esp. re: Mary Lucas being b. Engl.

Hi Ray,

Yes, that's my Thomas. I would love to establish that link too. Unfortunately I don't get into my research as much as I would like.
The show Who Do you think You Are in Australia is about to show an episode about Sigrid Thornton, the actor. The preview shows her learning about her convict ancestor Sylvester. So it looks like we're very distantly related. I'll be interested to see what they found about him.
I'd like to definitively establish parents for Thomas as I have a few options. I'll have to spend some more time on it soon.
I would love to hear if you have found anything else that may be of use. Thanks.

Hello,
Your best hope is to find the obit. for him in the newspaper where members of the family would be listed. It may also list the funeral home which could put you in contact with family with their permission. At the very least you will be able to find his gravesite and look for any records of purchase or maintenance. If you find the grave site, leave a waterproof message with your contact information. You never know.

Good Luck,
Eric

Thorntons of Vermont

My GG grandfather was Samuel Thornton (1816), he was married to Chloe B. ????. Would like info on both. Samuel was the son of Samuel Thornton 1775. He was born in Canada East???. His son was John Clark Thornton who moved from Vermont to Brookline Mass. John Clark Thornton married Jennie Clover Rowell. She had a boarder for many years named Lida Niles. When Lida was a child her father had a housekeeper named Melonia Thornton. Melonia had a two daughters one was Gertrude n. Thornton. Wondering who Melonia was and was she related to John Clark or Jennie in any way. Samuel 1775 was the brother of the nephew of the famous Matthew Thornton, that part of the family is tree is well documented but by the 1800's the trail seems to fade. Wondering if anyone has any info to share.
jeanie

Thomas Thornton Help Required

I am seeking help in locating early details of the life of Thomas Thornton,a mariner in the Royal Navy. From his naval records I have determined he was born on 12 May 1833 in Durham.in 1853 he joined HMS Duke of Wellington. He married Elizabeth Bartlett in 1858 in Portsmouth shortly before he set sail on HMS Caesar.Leaving HMS Caesar in 1862 I then find him in Ireland with the Coastguard service where he remains until 1878.He then reappears on the 1891 and 1901 census living in Salford,Lancashire, where he states he was born in Egglescliffe,Co.Durham.However,the problem is I have checked both Egglescliffe and Durham records and he is nowhere to be found. From his marriage certificate I know that his Fathers name was John and that John was a Stonemason and that at the time of the marriage John was deceased, meaning he died somewhere between 1833 and 1858,but where? There are no suitable entries I can find in the 1841 and 1851 census to locate Thomas,so where was he for the first 20 years of his life? Any clues as to where I go from here would be greatly appreciated.

Re: John Thornton. County Durham, England. Help needed.

Hi Susan,
I am afraid I only have information coming forward not going further back. John has proved to be my brick wall. I thought I had it sorted out with William and Mary Ann until I found a burial record for a John Thornton born to them, then it seemed to put everything into doubt. My only certainty is that John's father was a William Thornton and he was a mason. This information comes from his marriage certificate.
Sorry it's not much to go on.
Kathryn

Does anyone have a Thornton who married a Rachel in the 1770's or 1780's? I have a Rachel Brittian, b. 1761, NJ (daughter of William Brittain and Mary Collins) who married a Thornton, but I do not know what happened to her. Some folks have her death as 4 DEC 1843 in Orangeville, Columbia, Pennsylvania , but others disagree. Any help would be appreciated!
