For anyone who has been researching Adam Thoroughgood, here is some thorough detail compiled by Audrey Young, posted here with her permission. Her information can be compared to that contained in the link posted by Albert Pate: http://balcro.com/carol.html

An intriguing item here is the mention of a Willoughby surname. Willoughby also later becomes a given name in the Pate family.

The given name Thoroughgood in the Pate family is more than likely the surname of a Thoroughgood Pate’s mother. Although there were immigrants with the given name of Thoroughgood Pate, this family is researched for a possible connection.

Adventurers of Purse and Person mentions these early pioneers. “There was a Captain Adam Thorowgood who immigrated in 1621 in the “Charles” and served as Burgess for Elizabeth City by 1629.”

Cavaliers and Pioneers includes many Patents for persons of this surname, plus their adjoining neighbors:

Pate and Thoroughgood families: Connections?

There was a Thoroughgood Pate in Colonial Virginia and also in Colonial North Carolina. There is some uncertainty among Pate genealogists whether this is the same man. In any case, I am possibly a descendant of the NC Thoroughgood 1660-1713.

It was a common practice among the Pate's of the 1700s and 1800s to use surnames of friends and relatives as given names. Thoroughgood, in its many variations (Thorowgood, Thorogood, Thurowgood), is obviously a surname. So I have been searching for some connection between the two families, predating the birth of the NC Thoroughgood and perhaps even predating their arrival in America.

There was also a Capt. Adam Thoroughgood 1585-1642 in Colonial Virginia. Audrey Young, a Pate genealogist, has done a lot of research on this man and any possible connections to the Pate family.

Jerry Pait found a strong clue to a possible connection in England, where there was a "Pate Thorogood". See the following:

The manor descended in the direct male line of Palmer to Henry Billingsley Palmer, son of Edward Palmer. (fn. 36) Between 1668 and 1697 a number of mortgages were taken out on Dews Hall. (fn. 37) Among the mortgagees was Richard Lockwood. In 1709 Henry Billingsley Palmer sold the manor to Catlyn Thorogood, an official of the South Sea Company. (fn. 38) Thorogood died in 1732. (fn. 39) His son Pate Thorogood sold Dews Hall in 1735 to Richard Lockwood, 'an eminent Turkey merchant', the son of the above-mentioned Richard Lockwood. (fn. 40)

You might want to look at the McAllister's (various sp. McCalister) and Roughtons also for links to James Hassell. James Hassell's sister, Rachel, married first a McAllister and second a Swain. Here is the abstract of her will:

The information came from another researcher, so I do not know how accurate it is.
As I mentioned before, please check it out to be sure.
Since I am not working on the Thoroughgood name that much, I do not know a lot about them.
I was trying to connect Paul Thoroughgood to a Samuel Jackson from the Tyrrell County, NC area in the early 1800's. No luck so far!
Paul Thoroughgood was mentioned as a brother in law to Samuel Jackson according to Samuel's will dated March 21, 1807 in Tyrrell County, NC.Along with James Hassell, another brother-in-law, Paul Thoroughgood was listed as executors of Samuel Jackson's will. Since Samuel had seven sisters, it has been hard trying to find out which one was Paul Thoroughgood's wife.
AND maybe it was not the same Paul Thoroughgood????
If you find something with a Thoroughgood/Jackson connection please let me know...

Thanks for your response. Did you make a mistake with the date of Paul Thoroughgood' birth or is that date of Oct 1835 one sent to you by someone else. He surely isn't the one who married Mary Swain who was born ca. 1756.

Some info forwarded to me recently that was obtained from the Thoroughgood Cemetery in Tyrrell Co., NC, states:

Sacred to the memory of Paul Thoroughgood
who was born in Sussex County, Delaware on the
5th day of February 1760 and died in Tyrrel County, NC on the 10th of October 1835.

In memory of Mary Thoroughgood
who departed this life the 9th of October 1822
in the 64 year of her age.
[I assume this is Paul's wife Mary Swain

According to the Tyrrell Co. Marriage Bonds Paul Thoroughgood married Mary Swain 9 Jan 1788 in Tyrrell Co., NC.

In Paul's will he mentions four children: John, Amos, Ann and Betsey.

My dilemma is with Amos. There are two marriage bonds in Tyrrell Co. for an Amos Thoroughgood. One 23 Dec 1819 between Amos Thoroughgood and Isabelle McCalister; and one 3 Mar 1834 between Amos Thoroughgood and Sarah Basnight.

The Amos Thoroughgood who left a will 1 Dec 1836 named his wife Sally in his will. I don't believe this is the same Amos who married Isabelle McCalister since she did not die until 1 Aug 1855, about 18 years after this Amos died. It is possible that they divorced but I think it is more likely that there were two different Amos Thoroughgoods. What I want to know is which one was the son of Paul and Mary Swain Thoroughgood; and who the parents of the second Amos were.

I do NOT know how accurate this is! You should check with others on this information to be sure!
Paul Thoroughgood(b-Oct 1835)Sussex Cty,DE, said to be a son of Amos Thoroughgood(b-1809) and Sarah(Sally)Basnight(b-1813).
Paul's wife was said to have been Mary Swain, (b-abt 1756)Tyrrell, Cty, NC.. They married in Tyrrell County NC Jan 9, 1788. Another wedding date I found for them was abt 1756..
Paul Throughgood's will was said to have been dated Jan 3, 1829 Tyrrell County, NC. Did he die in 1836???
Children for him were listed as Betsy Thoroughgood, John Thoroughgood, Nancy Thoroughgood, and Amos Thoroughgood born 1809. I assume that Mary Swain was their mother...
According to one researcher, some of this information came from Tyrrell County, NC records including marriage bonds...

I am searching for the descendants of John Kearney (or Carney) Thoroughgood [born 1887] and his wife Lucinda [1893-1983] of Seaford, Sussex County, DE. Their children that I know of include:
William Thoroughgood (born 1910), Jane B. Thoroughgood (born 1913), Laura R. Thoroughgood (born 1920) and John K. Thoroughgood (born 1921).

Married Charles Harrington( B 1861 Dunmow Essex), 1883 age 20
1891 census gives age as 29 b London
1901 census gives age as 37 b Stratford
Unable to trace on 1881 as she was not living at home
Marriage cert shows fathers name to be Joseph occupation labourer.

Who was the wife of of Paul Thoroughgood mentioned in the will of Samuel Jackson? In this will dated March 21, 1807 Paul Thoroughgood and James Hassell are said to have been brothers in law of Samuel Jackson and executors of his will.
This was in Tyrrell County, 1807.
