Hi Linda,
Would the Johnston family member be Nancy "Ann" Johnston who married John Threlkeld about 1765 in Culpeper Co., Virginia? They are the parents of William Threlkeld. I did a little research in Kentucky and there are a few Johnston/Johnson families there who probably intermarried over the years. I'd be happy to correspond directly -I'm just not on my email computer at the moment. My e-mail is karens.carter@verizon.net
Thanks,
Karen

Is the property you purchased one of the old historic brick buildings? Samuel Read built many of the early ones. I have been looking at some information on early brick buildings in Kentucky, where he lived before he moved to Vernon. Both William Threlkeld and probably Samuel Read lived in the area near or around Great Crossings, KY -part of this was in the part of Scott County that later became Owen County in 1819.
You can email me outside the board at karens.carter@verizon.net

Hi Karen,
I am quite interested in your THRELKELD/THRAIKILL families and would like to correspond with you direct if you are willing.

My interest is taken with the "JOHNSON/JOHNSTON" surname in regards to use in middle names with so early of birth years..and particular with relationship to the Virginia and Kentucky families. My JOHNSON married a THRELKELD in early 1800's and I have 8 Williams and two Moses persons in my files.

My best regards,
Linda
lthank@gotsky.com

Thank you very much for this information, and I will correct the transcription to read John J. as I am sure you know some of these old documents can be tricky to unscramble. Very interesting that this is the Samuel Read who built the Courthouse. I have just purchased property across the street from that Courthouse where I will be moving next year.

Sheila Kell

Re: Will of John I. Threldkeld

I believe that the initial should be a J, as I have his name as John Johnson Threlkeld - born 11 October 1815. He was married to Polly Ann Vawter on 9 September 1835 in Vernon, Indiana. She died about 1836 and he died shortly after in late 1836 or early 1837. Samuel Read named as his friend was the husband of his sister Nancy Threlkeld. Samuel Read was the contractor who built the Courthouse in Vernon. Samuel Read, Moses Thrailkill, and John T. Grinstead were in the 1820 Jennings Co. Census in the Campbell Twp. area. Moses Thrailkill (another common spelling) was a brother of John Threlkeld. William Threlkeld, the father of John & Moses and father-in-law of Samuel Read, purchased property in Jennings County as early as 1818. He purchased 160 acres NE quarter, section 34, T7N, R9E on 19 Oct 1818 (south of Butlerville). On 21 Sept. 1821 he purchased another 160 acres adjoining the previous land- SW quarter, section 27, T7N, R9E. I found this recently while searching land records for Samuel Read relating to his sale of a corner of sec 27 to Concord Church (Baptist). I found that William and Sarah Threlkeld of Owen Co., Kentucky sold these two properties to Samuel Read on 8 Sept. 1830. (Recorder's office - Book U page 534). Samuel paid $640 for the 2 parcels. I also have a copy of William Threlkeld's will from Owen Co., Kentucky if anyone is interested.

Sallie R. THRELKELD b. 21 Feb 1839, Glasgow, MO -- d. 17 April 1917 - Kansas City, MO

"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Wednesday, April 18, 1917

A PIONEER TEACHER IS DEAD.

The end came yesterday afternoon to one of the oldest school
teachers in Kansas City in point of service and last of a family
that came here in 1850 when Miss Sallie R. THRELKELD died
suddenly at 720 Highland, where she had been making her
home the last year.

Miss THRELKELD was born in Glasgow, Mo., February 21, 1839.
With her brother, E. R. THRELKELD, pioneer grocer of Kansas
City, and her mother, she came to Kansas City in 1850. She taught
a private school from 1860 until the old Lathrop School was opened
at Eighth and May streets, when she became one of the first teachers
employed by the city. She taught for nine years at the old Lathrop
and nine years at the Humboldt School.

For twelve years prior to 1902 she was principal of the Emerson
School and its first principal. In 1900 she fell on the sidewalk at
Eleventh and Locust streets and broke her hip, while on her way to a
teachers' institute in the old Central High School Building. She taught
school the following two years on crutches.

Throughout her teaching career in Kansas City she had taught more
than two thousand children. Since 1902 Miss THRELKELD had spent
most of her time traveling and visiting relatives in Los Angeles, Cal.

Five nieces and a nephew survive. They are:

Miss Julia K. THRELKELD, Westgate Hotel
Mrs. Turner A. GILL of Los Angeles, Cal.
Mrs. H. C. APPLETON of New York City
Mrs. W. T. DILLON of New York City
Mrs. Katherine ROZIER, 3803 Broadway
James B. THRELKELD of Los Angeles, Cal.

The funeral will be at 4:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at Stine & McClure's
Chapel. The funeral service was set this hour, that the teachers may attend
the funeral. Burial will be in the family lot in Union Cemetery. The pall
bearers will be men school teachers.

======================================================
(I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate
knowing if you found this posting helpful.)
johnobrien@kc.rr.com
======================================================

neirbo8

I am the County Coordinator for Jennings County Indiana with INGenWeb, and am in the process of transcribing the old County record books. I am curious about the Threldkeld family and your board is the closest spelling I have found. I try and find information for my files on families who lived in Jennings County. Here is a will I transcribed last night I was wondering if any of these names connect to your research.

JOHN I THRELDKELD--WILL
In the name of God Amen I John I Threldkeld being weak in body but enjoying my reason do make this my last will and testament.
It is my will that my body be decently intered and that my debts be punctually paid (though they be few) and after payment of my debts and funeral expenses that my Executors pay to the Trustees of the Vernon Church seventy five dollars to be appropriated by them on the meeting house and I bequeath to my beloved sister Nancy Read my bed and bedding and I desire that A & M Vawter have the property that I received of them and I bequeath to Elder William L Stott $4 four dollars for his labors last year and I bequeath a dress to Martha Vawter of her own choosing and then the remainder of my property to be converted in money and put to interest for the benifit of my beloved brothers George B. and Jesse Threldkeld and to be laid out in their education under the direction of the Georgetown or some other Thological institution and I hope that father will aid in their education but if the refuse to accept of the same and apply it in their education I then bequeath five hundred dollars to my beloved father William Threldkeld and then the remainder I bequeath to the house mission of Baptists except my books and clothes which my executors except ? which is to go to brother Hiram and I appoint my friends Samuel Read and Achilles Vawter my Executors to carry this my will into effect.
Given under my hand this 11th day of Nov. 1834
John I Threldkeld
In presence of
Martha Vawter
Joeseph Cowell
Hello,

I just read your message to Shannon and Shelly where you mention that your Threlkeld family ties are in Virginia with distant relatives in Kentucky. My THRELKELD ancestors originate in Virginia also and I have found Threlkelds in Kentucky but have not yet connected them. Would you be so kind as to forward this message to your sister. I would love to hear more about your grandfather's book. My line also includes a SPILLER connection. Thank you.

Looking for more information for Wiley J. Threlkeld, b. Aug 11, 1855 in Georgia (maybe Madison) and d. Feb 7, 1912 in Banks County, GA and his family. He was married to Eliza Jane Brooks in 1875. They had 11 children all born in Georgia. I have the 1910 census for the family.

I'm trying to find out who his parents were?? I think it might of been Julia Ann, but am not sure? I found an 1860 Census for her and there's a name listed, Jackson W. Therlkild b. 1855. Need another set of eyes to help me :)

Wiley's middle name could of been Jackson or James. One more gory detail, he committed suicide (was reported in the Jackson Herald).

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Hi Shannon and Shelly

I found your post when I googled my father's name, William L. Threlkeld. In his case, the L is for Logan, and he was actually a Junior, as my grandfather was of the same name.

Interestingly, I have a sister also named Shelly. Our roots are in Virginia, and we know of distant relatives in Kentucky. My grandfather actually wrote a family ancestry book, which my elder sister has in her possession; she's taken the role of family historian and I have little interest myself. If you find this post and want to email me, I will forward your contact information to her with a request that she get in touch with you.

My name is Threlkeld also. I have the family history book written by Hansford Lee Threlkeld in the 1930's. I did not know there was another family history book so I would be very much interested in corresponding with you and/or your sister. I see that you are not Hansford's line but I am wondering if you are of the line that did some work on the medieval line that I don't know about. (Supposedly there were 5 lines in colonial times.)

I see you are descended from the same line I am. I have your line in detail back to Christopher who was the overseer for Gov. Spotswood. I do not have a scanner but if you send me your address I will snail mail a copy of your line or if you prefer, I can answer a specific question about a specific generation.

I would be very much interested in anyone who has done or is doing researh in England. My daughters have visited the ancestral community on the Scottish border and I have some research of the medieval family done in the 1920's but I think we should have more up to date work.

I will be glad to send you all you wish about your ancestors after they came to VA via Barbados if you send me your adddress.
