The Parents of Mary Edith Throgmorton

Even though my query is about Throgmortons, I take the liberty of posting it here also, as Throckmorton and Throgmorton seem to have been used interchangeably in Montgomery County, North Carolina, in the early 1800s. Certainly Gabriel, mentioned below, was known by both names at various times.

On 30 Nov 2007, I posted a message on the Throgmorton board summarizing my research into the Throgmorton family of Henry County, Tennessee. I was and still am seeking the parents of my great-great-grandmother Mary Edith Throgmorton.

Recently, I discovered a message of 22 Apr 1999 by John R. Throgmorton on GenForum. I think he has provided the clue I needed, but John appears to have died in 2007. I hope that someone has picked up where he left off, and/or that one of you Throckmorton/Throgmorton researchers out there can confirm or deny what follows.

I think it's likely that my Mary Edith is the daughter of Gabriel Throgmorton and his first wife Sarah Boyd or perhaps a second wife, as Sarah may have died early.

What John wrote in 1999 is in quotes below:

"Josiah Throgmorton (my line) had Gabriel, Josush, Thomas, Elizabeth and others."

This much is in Sitherwood's book of 1929, beginning on page 352. Thomas's widow, Rosanna Wilkinson Throgmorton, moved with her children from Montgomery County, North Carolina, to Henry County, Tennessee, in about 1833. Their relatives Richard Throgmorton and his family were already there. But for Gabriel, according to Sitherwood, "Nothing further known."

John says, "Gabriel Throgmorton married Sarah Boyd/Boyt in NC. They had Henry (my line) (Proved), Robertson, James William, maybe more. Gabriel’s family remained in NC until about 1834 when they moved to Henry Co., TN. Gabriel died about 1834, Montgomery Co., NC."

In the 1850 census of Henry County, we find the widower William Throgmorton living with Rosanna, who I suspect was his aunt by marriage. The census says William was born abt 1816 in Tennessee, but FamilySearch says North Carolina. Also in the house are his three children Mary E., Roberson, and James. The household was counted on 2 Dec 1850. This is Gabriel's James William.

In the same census, we find Edy Throgmorton, age 6, and James Throgmorton, age 3, in the household of Samuel Hawkins Cunningham and Mary Edith "Edy" Throgmorton Cunningham. These two children are the same ages as Mary E. and James in Rosanna's household. The Cunningham household was counted on 16 Sep 1850. I believe the two children were counted twice, and that in September they were staying with their Aunt Mary Edith, the sister of James William; by early December, they were back with their father in Rosanna's household.

Also in the 1850 census is Roberson Throgmorton, b. abt 1813 in North Carolina. This is Gabriel's Robertson.

I have not located Gabriel's children Henry or Elizabeth, but it seems that Robertson and James William in Henry County in 1850 are his, along with their sister Mary Edith. They moved to Henry County in about 1834 either as orphans or with Gabriel's widow, to join up with Rosanna's family and the other Throgmortons there. It's even possible that Thomas's family and Gabriel's family traveled together in 1833/1834.

Can anyone shed any light on this hypothesis?

Many thanks

John

How should I find more information?

Hello! I am also researching my dad's family line. I am related to an Alice M. Throckmorton (Glower) who was born in St. Louis, Missouri. She was my great-grandmother.

this is what i have so far.

Alice M Throckmorton (Glower,)born abt 1856 parents are William Thockmorton and Kate M Glower. There were three children in this marriage. Four children: Charles, Alice, Laura. There is another listing online about an Alice M, Throckmorton (Glore) but I do not know if it is the same. There is a different child Solomon that isn't in my records. But everything else is the same.

Willam Throckmorton was born in PA and so was his father. His mother was from NJ, but sadly I do not have their names.

Kate M Glower (Throckmorton) was born in Kentucky. Her father was born in NC and her father was born in Virginia. I hope this helps.

Does any of this information link to yours?

Hi, I am looking for any info on Martha Pear Throckmorton's parents. She was born Oct. 28, 1917 and she died on Sep. 27, 1983 in Cleveland, Ohio. She was married to an Earl Osborne. She had two daughters with him. She divorced Earl on July 14, 1975. I know of one definate sibling that was called "Patty/Paddy". I think his real name was Melvin Issac Murphy. He died on Dec. 17, 1993 in Michigan. There is possibly a sister name "Flo/Florence/Flossi" I can find nothing on her. I do know that they were placed into an orphanage. I also do not know if Throckmorton is Martha's real name or adopted name. Real name could be Murphy. Still hope to find something either way.

The James Webb who married Mary Smith was a son of an earlier James Webb and his wife Mary Edmondson. This overall Webb family was out of an earlier man in VA who was named Giles Webb.

The above Mary Smith was a daughter of Colonel Francis Smith and his first wife Lucy Meriwether. Colonel Francis Smith was a son of Captain Nicholas Smith and Ann/Anne Unknown, as well as a grandson of an earlier Nicholas Smith (whose wife is unknown to me).

A Thomas Edmundson (from the same overall family as the above Mary Edmundson) and his wife Sarah had a daughter named Judith Edmondson, and Judith married Gabriel Throckmorton. Gabriel and Judith had several children, including Albion Throckmorton. Per your post, Albion married Mary Smith Webb (and other records seem to agree with that). Mary Smith Webb was a daughter of the above-referenced James Webb and his wife Mary Smith, per records that I have seen.

Note: Albion Throckmorton had a sister who was named Dorothy Throckmorton, and she married a man who was also named James Webb (from the same overall Webb family as the others mentioned herein).

Gabriel and Judith (Edmondson) Throckmorton also had a daughter who was named Sarah "Sally" Throckmorton, and she married a William Smith. This William Smith was a son of an older William Smith and his wife Mary Belfield (Mary Belfield was also a Meriwether descendant, since her grandmother was Mary Meriwether, a SISTER of the above-referenced Lucy Meriwether...this is the same overall Meriwether family that eventually "led to" the famous explorer, Meriwether Lewis). This older William Smith who married Mary Belfield was another child of Colonel Francis Smith, but this William Smith was via the SECOND wife of the Colonel's, who was named Ann/Anne Adams (Lucy Meriwether had died, and the Colonel remarried to Miss Adams).

Note: The only son that Colonel Francis Smith had with his first wife Lucy Meriwether was named Meriwether Smith.

The above James Webb who married Mary Smith had a sister who was named Mary Webb. This Mary Webb married a Colonel Samuel Smith who was out of the Alexander Smith family from over in "next-door" Middlesex Co., VA. At present, we do not know if Alexander Smith and Colonel Francis Smith were "blood related," but the above marriages to SIBLINGS in the Webb family make that seem like a resonable possibility (DNA testing may someday prove this, one way or the other...we have a couple of male Smith DNA donors from Alexander Smith's family, but we do not have a male Smith donor from the Colonel Francis Smith family at this time).

Comments on any of the above?

I don't have any direct info about Sanders Throckmorton, but my grandfather, James H. Manuel, married his widow, Emma, sometime in the 1930's. He died in 1945 and is buried next to Sanders. I don't know much about him and have been trying to find out more. My father is the 2nd of seven children from James Manuel's first marriage to Nannie Deering. They lived in Eden, NC. I would be very interested if any of your family has any infomation. Most important is that I am looking for any photos of JH Manuel and Emma. The Manuel line is also related to the Tilley's. James Manuel's grandmother was Rebecca Tilley, who married Pleasant Manuel in 1850.

Also because of the names of his oldest son and daughter, I believe Daniel's parents names were Joseph and Sarah Spriggs.
I believe Daniel had a brother Benjamin, who settled in Belmont County, OH. He also may have had brothers Joseph and Jeremiah.
Are you aware of the "other" Joseph Spriggs in jackson County Ohio. There is "my" Joseph, the son of Daniel, and the "other" Joseph, who married Rebecca McCoy. I beleive this other Joseph is Daniel's nephew, possibly son of Daniel's brother Joseph.
How are you descended from Daniel and Sarah?

Throckmorton, Michael & Anna obituary
Michael & Anna Throckmorton
Memorial services for retired wildlife biologist and teacher Michael Reed Throckmorton, 78, and his wife, Anna LaVerne Carlson Throckmorton, 72, a South Kitsap craftsman, will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Port Orchard United Methodist Church. The couple died Dec. 11 as a result of an auto accident at Manchester Highway and Harrison Avenue.

Mr. Throckmorton was born Aug. 29, 1902, in Derby, Iowa, to James and Hattie Throckmorton. He attended school in Idaho, and following high school graduation joined the Marine Corps. He later worked his way through two years of college at Gooding College, and spent two years teaching in a one-room country school in south Idaho.

During the 1930s, he earned a degree in education at the University of Idaho. He married Anna LaVerne Carlson in Denver in 1933. Following college graduation, he worked 10 years as a secondary school teacher in Twin Falls, Idaho, but left that field due to a lifelong interest in wildlife and the outdoors, which led him to a master's degree in wildlife management from Texas A & M. Most of his working life was spent as a biologist and educator with the Idaho Fish and Game Department. He retired in 1964. The couple moved to Kitsap following his retirement.

Mr. Throckmorton was a charter member of Kitsap and Tahoma chapters, National Audubon Society, plus South Kitsap County Writing Group, South Kitsap County Active Senior Citizens Club, and the American Assciation of Retired Persons. He edited several early Kitsap family histories, and also wrote about the county's flora and fauna, with both writing projects used in county historical records.

Survivors include a brother, James Robert Throckmorton of Gig Harbor, and another brother, two sisters, two daughters, two grandchildren, and 11 nieces and nephews, all living out of the county.

His wife was born in Twin Falls, Idaho, July 11, 1908. She received a bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado, and taught in Idaho public schools and worked for the Boise Public Library until moving to this area in 1964. Mrs. Throckmorton was active in pottery, stitchery, woodcarving, and other crafts, was a member of the South Kitsap Writers Group, and was a regular volunteer at the Sidney Art Gallery and at the Log Cabin Museum in Port Orchard. She was also a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, the American Association of University Women, and Methodist Women. She is survived by two sisters, living out of state.

(from the Bremerton, Washington SUN newspaper microfilm, Dec. 15, 1980.
I would love to exchange info with you, finding info on the family has been almost impossible. My grandmother was Emma Curry, my granfather was their youngest son, born just about two years before Saunders died, and as fate would have it I was barely two when my grandfather died, so very little is known about Saunders or his family. According to my great uncle, the only surviving child of Emma and Saunders, all he was ever told was that his father was from Mount Airy, which was a little off. James and Ailsey are buried at the old home place in Stokes County, it is back in the woods behind their home, which still stands. The cemetery is long abandoned, and very few tombstones still standing. The Sons of the Confederacy were supposed to be cleaning it up, but I am not for sure if they ever did since I haven't been there in a few years. Please email me, I do have a few pictures sent from another distant cousin. I have been there, and will be more than happy to give you directions. The land is no longer owned by anyone in the family, and takes a 4wd to access.

Kathy,
I don't have anything on a Joseph with a wife named Rebecca McCoy Spriggs. I know Daniel had at least 2 brothers but I have no information on them. When I was young my mother did tell me that 3 brothers came to Ohio from Pa. I do not know if Daniel had a brother Joseph or not but it is very likely that he did. Jeremiah, I have not heard of but, could be.

I do have some information on Joseph J. Spriggs (son of Daniels eldest son Joseph) in Jackson County in the early years. Joseph J. Spriggs was the eldest son of Daniels son Joseph born March 1st 1827. I have a copy of an article about Joseph J. Spriggs that shows his parents being Joseph Spriggs and Rebecca (Bond) Spriggs. In this article from the book "History of Lower Scioto Valley" it specifically states that his grandparents (Daniel and Sarah) came from Pa. into Belmont County, Oh. originally, then resided in Ky. for a while and then came to the Jackson County, Ohio area. Joseph J. Spriggs became a reverend in the Christian church at age 30. He married July 26th 1850 to Elizabeth Reynolds with whom he had 7 children. Elizabeth died in 1868 (age 36) and in November 1869 he married Nancy S. Dupre.

On Daniel and Sarah, I believe the 1800 census of Washington County, Pa shows a Joseph Spriggs that "could" be our ancester. Myself, I cannot go there at this time to see if there are any land records or such. Hope someone can clear this up for everybody some day soon. If I ever do find out any more, I will post it everywhere.

I am descended from Daniel and Sarah through his son Peter, his son Daniel Cutlip Spriggs, his son Walter Spriggs, then his son (my dad) Thomas Spriggs. I have been looking into our heritage off and on for a few years but I just cannot get past Daniel and Sarah.

Thanks for responding to my inquiry. Maybe we can generate some additional inquiries and find our answer. For now, Thanks again, Janice Spriggs Helton.

Hello! I am curous as to the brothers you may have found for Daniel in Pa. Do you know their names and approximate birth dates? Do you possibly know who Daniels's parents were? This is a dead end for me. I tend to believe based strictly on the naming conventions at the time, that Daniels father would probably have been named Joseph. Thanks, Janice

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 7 April 1904, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

ALLEGED POISONING

Sterling Family Arrested for Giving Arsenic to Husband and Father - Lawton: Mrs. F. H. Throckmorton, her sons Joseph and James and her daughter, Mrs. Lillian Chatterton, was arrested near Sterling and brought here and placed in jail. They are charged with having poisoned F. H. Throckmorton three weeks ago. At the time of his death the people of the community suspicioned foul play for the reason they stated, that the old man had been brutally mistreated by his family and it was known that arsenic has been brought to the family several times. The coroner was summoned but arrived there after the body had been buried. Recently an autopsy was held, the stomach was removed and taken to Norman for examination. Arsenic was clearly visible. The arrest followed.

Throckmorton to Morton, New Jersey to Ohio

Hello,
I am trying to find the ancestors of Benjamin Morton, b 1787 or 88 in New Jersey, died 6/7/1854 in Preble County, OH. A biography of his son John Morton that appears in the history of Edgar County, IL indicates that Benjamin Morton was a second cousin of Indiana Civil War Governor Oliver Perry Morton. I know that the Governor's father had shortened their name from Throckmorton to Morton, and I thought the same thing might have happened with Benjamin.

I believe Benjamin left New Jersey around 1814 and settled first in Warren County, Ohio before moving to Preble County. He married Hannah Janney, whose family also moved from New Jersey to Ohio. The Edgar County history indicated Benjamin was the son of a Revolutionary War soldier and that Benjamin himself served in the War of 1812.

Any information that might shed light on his parentage would be appreciated.

I just noticed you had an update on here, did not see it earlier. Can you tell me where James and Ailsey are buried? By the way, I have a copy of Saunders Throckmorton and Thena Hicks marriage license. Was Thena Hicks your great grandmother or was Emma Curry? Emma was his second wife. Thena Hicks was also related to me on my great grandfather's side. Would love to exchange information with you.

My George was married to Rachel Throckmorton 7/4/1839 in Vinton Co. I have a birth date as 1817 in VA, but I don't know the source of that. That is all I know about him, other than children listed on the 1850 Census. Anything you have would be greatly appreciated.
Elizabeth Throckmorton (b1523)

I am trying to locate information on the children of Elizabeth Throckmorton (b 1523) and John Gifford/Giffard (1523-63). Elizabeth is the daughter of Sir George Throckmorton and Catherine Vaux. John was her first husband and William Hodges her second. I believe that I am descended from their son, John Gifford (1546-1605) but am having difficulties proving this relationship (I find references to it but no sources for it). Any infomration would be greatly appreciated.

I was wondering if you might be willing to share the lineage back and your sources. I am trying to prove my ancestry through (and to) Elizabeth Throckmorton, daughter of Sir George Throckmorton and Catherine Vaux, and her first husband, John Gifford/Giffard.
