Hello again!
I'm not sure if you've seen it, but James Lewis Tibballs and his 2nd wife's (Sarah Dobbin) marriage certificate from April 1873 is now on Ancestry - came on a week after I ordered it! It shows him as a carpenter and widowder, and his father as Lewis James Tibballs, deceased, so it all fits with our trees.

Yes we have to same family don't we! It's a very distant connection though...You mentioned James Lewis Tibballs, born 1828 in Richmond who had 2 wives..your Lewis James Tibballs was from the 1st marriage, my relative is Charles Tibballs, born 1877 from the 2nd one, mother Sarah Dobbin. Charles is my great grandfather. He was quite a bit younger than your Lewis, so we're sort of a generation behind your family.
Your side of the family sounds more interesting than mine! Charles was a painter and decorater who lived in London, then Kent and had 4 children - George, Ellen, my grandad Frederick and Jack, as well as 2 that died as babies. Not very exciting is it!
I have your part of the family in my tree too but I haven't looked into them properly, so the information you've given me was really interesting. Like you, I'm really interested in the Tibballs name but I have no idea where it comes from either. My dad's theory is that every Tibballs spelt the same way is somehow related, so I'm trying to find out if it's true! There's quite a few in Warwickshire/Leicestershire in censuses, etc, but I can't find a connection. Are you still in touch with any of your Tibballs relatives?
I haven't been able to get any further than you with my research - Lewis James in 1800 is the furthest back I've got. I'm planning a visit to the Surrey records officewhich has the records for Richmond, so I'll let you know if I find anything out.
I'd really appreciate it if you would send me the family tree Daphne sent you. So where did she fit into the family?

Haha, oh how exciting. Yes it does, how exciting!
Name on the certificate is Louis Victor Tibballs, born Medway district in 1887.
His father, Lewis J Tibballs was a Quarter Master-Seargent with the Royal Engineers and so the boys were all born in different places: Louis, born 1888, Chatham; Percy, born 1892 in Mauritius; Freddie, born 1896 in Falmouth. Seems to have been born/christened/registered in Hanover Square, London, 1859.
He, in turn, seems to have had a father called Lewis James Tibballs who was born in Richmond, in 1828 and married twice. His father was called Lewis James too, born 1800; the name Lewis appears to have stemmed from this man's wife's maiden name. (I got the information in this paragraph from a lady called Daphne, who contacted me on here in 2006). I can send you a copy of the family tree that she sent to me.
I think I made a mistake...did I tell you that Victor married Gladys? She is his daughter, of course...he married Dorothy Irene Geddes, from the Isle of Wight. She had several children, including my Grandmother.

So, Where do these people fit into your family story? Have you ever heard a family story about a name change? Do you know whether the family originally came from Europe?
I have never been able to get around to verifying much beyond Victor's birth certificate and of course, one can only get so far on Ancestry alone, so I had got stuck until Daphne emailed me. I had begun to guess amatueurishly at some details which Daphne had found in her research too. It would be interesting to see what you make of it.

Hi, yes I have a Victor Louis Tibballs, born 1887, with brothers called Percy and Frederick! I don't have Gladys though.
In my tree, Victor Louis Tibballs's father was Lewis (sometimes also spelt Louis) James Tibballs, born 1859 in London.
Does any of this sound familiar?

Yes please! I was contacted by somoneone a few years ago, who gave me her research (it ended up being fairly certain that we weren't really related) and I would be interested to compare it to yours and mine. We can share!
My Maternal Great-Grandfather was Victor Louis Tibballs and my Grandma was (before she married) Gladys Tibballs. We have two Great War ancestors, one of whom won a Military Cross; they were Frederick and Percy Tibballs. I would love to hear from a child, grandchild or great grand child of theirs!

Oh my. I just revisted my TIBBILS line and see how much research I need to repeat. What a mess!!! So sorry for the misinformtion and I really do appreciate you pointing out my error. I have since 2001 moved across the country and live in Colville, WA but am very active in my local genealogy society. Again, thank you for pointing out my mistake.

Josiah is the brother of Thomas Tibbals born 2 Mar 1651 in Milford, New Haven, Conn. Our Thomas married Abigail Stream on 12 Dec 1672 in Milford, Conn. Abigail was the d/o Martha Beard and John Stream.

Out Tibbals is Thomas Tibbals of Milford Conn. He was one of the originas settlers. He had two wifes,the first ones name was Mary. She had two children Samial and Mary. I was under the understanding that bouth of the children died. I don't think that Mary did. Can any one help with this?
And do you have a last name for Mary?

I have (and it's being added to quite regularly at the moment) numerous Tibbals from the South East London, England area. Some from my g-grandparents and/or gg-grandparents siblings left England for a life in America. Does anyone tracing the Tibbals family, have ancestors from this part of England?

Although we both descend from the immigrant, Thomas Tibalds/Tibbals, we part immediately as I descend from Josiah Tibbals who married Mary SHERWOOD and then down from there. Josiah and Mary had a son, Josiah who had a son Nathan who had a son Nathan who married Hannah COGSWELL. This couple moved to Auburn, New York. Sorry I can't be of any help. Incidently, somewhere along the line my line changed the name to TIBBILS.

I have him born on 21 March 1838. Ohio. His wifes name is Nancy Lutitia Hall. M date 26 May 1859. His Fathers name is Seymour Spelman Tibbals. It that helps let us know.

We are doing the family history on Thomas Tibbals (1615)from England. He moved to Milford, New Haven Co, Connicticut. The son Thomas married Abilgail Stream. Then Joseph Tibbals married Abigail Baldwin who had John that marred Olive Rose. Who had a son they named Moses who married Ruth Spelman.To make a long story short. The family moved to California. Then Walter Marvin Tibbals married Mildred Mary Humphrey and they moved to Bishop, California. There son moved to Yerington, Nevada.

My TIBBALS were/are from Bernodsey/Deptford area of London, and most of them workked on the docks. However, you mention the Hertfordshire Tibbals. I know that I am not related to this Tibbals family. The names you gave are not in my tree either. But then if your Tibbals come from the same area of London as mine and worked on the docks, there is a possibility. I will contact some relatives who may know more than what I do and see what they say, and get back to you.

hi i am married to andrew john tibbals whose fathers, donald alfred, family originally come from the london dockland area. Don't have much info as he passed away in aug 1990.he was at htis time living in hertfordshire where he had lived for at least 40 years. he was married to Nellie and had 4 children Graham,colin,pam and andrew. would like to hear from you if you have anty information on this branch.

Sorry, but I have no photo of this Tibbals family member, nor anyone of that name. You are 100+ years ahead of me. I am still in the mid 1700's. Plus, as at the moment, I don't have any connection to the American Tibbals. Sorry, but I cann't help.

Hi, I notice this is an old message but hope you get this. My fathers name was George Henry Tibbals born in Bermondsey London 16 April 1921 I have a twin brother John Tibbals and sister Sheila Tibbals my mothers name is Hilda Jean Mary Stark (originaly from Deptford London)
I am not very sure of dates but may be able to help. We do have a family diary which mentions 'The Truelove' bound for US I will try to find out where it is and if there is any interesting information in it.

Looking for a photo of Elisha Green Tibbals, he was a Baptist Minister or Preacher in the Mid to late 1800's. He may of had one taken by someone when he was a traveling minister, in the east. I believe I have a photo of some of the children, or at least the all look like one of his son's William H. Tibbals.

I am jumping in here with my line of Tibballs/Tibbles/etc.

My grandmother's last name was Tibbils. Her father was Henry Clay Tibbils, son of Harvey W. Tibbals, son of John B. Tibballs, son of Nathan Tibballs (married to Hannah Cogswell)

Could you please give me the name of the book you are referring to at the New York public library? I volunteer once a week at NEHGS and would like to see if they have a copy of it there.

Barney and Anna Tibbals in Wyoming

There is a lot written about Barney N. and Anna Tibbals in this book: South Pass City: Wyoming's City of Gold, compiled by Thos. Lindmier and Cynde Georgen, (2004; Donning Publishers, VA Beach, VA). He was manager of the gold mine there betw. 1898 and 1905.

Hi, I am also a descendant of Henry Eliot Tibbals. I was wondering which of his wives your husband is descended from. My grandmother has done a lot of research on him, and discovered he was a polygamist. I'd love to share what info I have if you are interested.

Thomas Tibbals was born June 27, 1613 in Ellsborough, Buckingham, England. He came to America on the ship TRUELOVE which sailed from London in 1635. He settled in Milford, CT in 1640 and was admitted to the church there on Feb. 24, 1645. His first wife Mary was admitted to the church on Feb. 14, 1644. She died June 18, 1644. Their children were Mary, Samuel and John. He married a second time to Sarah Seabrook. Their children were John, Josiah, Thomas, Sarah, and Hannah.

Thomas died April 8, 1703 in Milford, CT. and has a stone inscription on the memorial bridge at Milford dedicated Aug. 28, 1889, the town's 250th anniversary.

Theobald was spelt Tibballs in the 1600-1700 so in writing down information such as births marriages and deaths they were spelt Tibballs OR Theobald depending how educated the person was.

Sorry it's taken me a year to reply. If your Tibbals family came from Hertfordshire, then we are not related. Not my branch I'm afraid. If they came from Southwark, South East London, then they'll be my line. The names you gave aren't in my tree at present.

Edward Tibbals

I am wondering if you ever found this connection...as Henry Willard Tibbals was my gggrandfather. His daughter, Ada Madora Tibbals, was my ggrandmother and her son, Harry Tibbals Gorsuch, was my grandfather.
