Hi Deidre

I can't help you with this one. My mother was born in Sapulpa, Oklahoma and died in 2006 in Southampton, Massachusetts. I've never been to Oklahoma but my parents went to visit Broken Arrow in July 1972 to see the daughter of her grandmother's sister, Nora Nave-Nichols. Sorry answering this so late but I don't spend as much time on the puter once Spring comes. I'm now back to working on my tree again.
Annmarie J. Christian

Hi Deidre
I've had Ancestry invite you to view my tree. My link to Moty is through my mother's paternal aunt, Juanita Vera Brown-Tiger-Cunningham. I've been working on my tree for over 10 years. I have an old photo of my grandmother, Mary Wadsworth-Brown-McAlpine in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. She is standing in front of the Eufaula Boarding school, a Government run boarding school for Indian girls, with Juanita Vera Brown and Lena Tiger? Would you have any info on Lena? I also have a page for George Washington Tiger. If you find any errors, please let me know and I'll fix.
Thanks
Annmarie J.
Do you know the name of the property owner who lives close by the Tiger Cemetery? My family still owns the cemetery. In 2005, I contacted the tribe and led them to the site. They were supposed to maintain the area. THanks for any information you can give me.

Deidre Prevett

I'm related to a long line of Perryman's from my mother's paternal great grandfather, Chief Samuel William Brown, Sr. (Yuchi & mixed Yuchi & Creek) and also the Hodge line. The Perryman line is huge due to marriages and children. My family tree is at Ancestry with owner as BlondiNativeAme3. My mother was also related to Tigers but haven't been able to find the right Tiger family. Her name was Mollie Tiger and the mother of Kate Atkins-Wadsworth-Holden, who was my mother's maternal great grandmother. Thomas Atkins (white) married Mollie Tiger (full blood Creek) of Coweta. Their daughter was Kate Atkins-Wadsworth-Holden who was married to #1-Mitchell Wadsworth, Sr. (died 1/2 Creek) and #2-Thomas Holden (white?). Kate and Mitchell, Sr. had one child, a son, Mitchell Wadsworth, Jr. who married my maternal great grandmother, Emma Barr-Wadsworth and Emma had my grandmother, Mary Josephine Wadsworth-Brown-McAlpine. Somewhere along the line the paternal Brown side of mom's family married into the maternal Wadsworth side of her family. From my Brown line, I go back to James S. Vann who was Cherokee and married to a Cherokee named Mary Wadsworth. James S. Vann & Mary Wadsworth changed from the Cherokee to Creek Rolls when they enrolled on the Dawes Final Rolls. We might have some common ancestors with Perryman and Hodge line. E-mail me at BlondiNativeAme3@yahoo.com and I can connect you to a Perryman or Hodge ancestor in my tree.
Annmarie J.
I was married to Mack Hodge who was the son of Ella Maria Hodge who was the sister of Grace Trottingwolf. I had read a article about Lincoln many years ago and they said that he had the orginal boot the Trail Of Tears. I do know that the parents of Grace and Ella were Thomas Toma Hider or sometimes spelled Hyder. Thomas' grandmother was Lucinda Adair. I also know that somewhere on Ellas side and I do belive she was an O'Field, who was related to Degadona (Probably not spelled correct) He/or she was on the trail of tears. I had all this information from the Cherokee nation and had misplaced it moving and have never been able to retreive any of it. Anything you know about that side of the family would be appreciated. Thank you and really good to find you. Cecile Hodge

Lincoln Trottingwolf and Susan Dirtpott were my Great-Grandparents. They diviorced when I was a child so do not remember Susan. She remarried to a Mr. Pather but never met her. Lincoln (in his 60s)then married Grace Hider(in her teens), whose brother was Sam Hider, the preacher and author of Cherokee language books.

Lincoln (101), Grace (64) and a nephew named Cornshuker(early 20s) were all killed in a house fire around 1965.

Lincoln and Susan had several children: Nelson, Edwin, Nellie, Clarence, and Sequoyah to name a few. I believe they had several more that died as babies. Sequoyah Trottingwolf was my grandfather. His role number was 10162. My mother, Velma Trottingwolf, was his oldest daughter and my aunt, Katherine was his other daughter.
Velma got married in 1946 to Ralph Pursifull, Sr. and had 5 children. I am the oldest. Katherine had two daughters. All of my brothers and sisters have children and many of the children have children. Most of Ralph and Velma's childen, grandchildren and great-grand-children are register in the Cherokee Nation.

I am interested in knowing if anyone knows who was in the Trail of Tears. Lincoln was born in 1863 and died in 1964. We know he was born in Indian Territory so his parents may or may not have been in the Trail of Tears. If not, then his grandparents must have been. Any information would be appreciated.

Would the Tiger Family plot have a Mollie Tiger buried there? My mother was born in Sapulpa, Oklahoma on March 16, 1924 and died in Southampton, Massachusetts on Feb. 26, 2006. She was the granddaughter of Chief Samuel William Brown, Jr. and Mattie May Payne-Brown. Mom was raised as white but was a mixed Yuchi & Creek. She was the daughter of Mary Wadsworth and Chief Brown's son, Samuel Wayne Brown, Sr. Mom said as a child she heard the people who raised her talk of a Mollie Tiger but I've never been able to find any info on her. Chief Brown's daughter, Juanita Vera Brown married a Tiger in Sapulpa, Oklahoma and she either divorced him or he died. Juanita was married quite a few times. Her sister-in-law was a Louise Tiger. Do any of these names sound familiar to you? I have extensive records for Chief Brown and Juanita Vera Brown-Tiger on my family tree. I'm almost positive Louise Tiger's father was a Precher. I'm also an enrolled member of the Muscogee Creek Nation of Oklahoma.
Thank you
Annmarie J.
I have a Mollie Tiger, Creek Native American, on my mother's side of the family. They were from the Sapulpa, Oklahoma area. Mom was born in Sapulpa March 16, 1925 and died in Southampton, Massachusetts on Feb. 26, 2006. I have checked at www.AccessGenealogy.com on their Dawes Final Rolls for a Mollie Tiger but now that I think about it, she could have died before the Final Rolls.
Daily Oklahoman
08-14-1913
p.4

SEMINOLE INDIAN FOUND MURDERED

Body Placed on Railroad; Is Believed to Be Result of Stomp Dance

Maud, Okla., Aug 13 -(Special)-

With a bullet wound in the head, and lifeless, the body of
Tony Tiger, a Seminole indian living near Maud, was found
early Wednesday morning on the Missouri, Kansas & Texas
railroad tracks about three miles south of Maud. It was
evident that the Indian had been killed and his body placed
on the track in an effort to avoid detection of the crime.
The body was found a short time before a passenger train
was due to pass the place.

The sheriff and other officers from Seminole are working on
the case believing that the killing was the result of
trouble at a stomp dance at Hazel in the southern part of
Seminole county, which has just closed. The Indians during
the dance had liquor, many of them, it is asserted were
drunk, and it is believed Tiger had trouble which later
resulted in his death.

No arrests have been made. Whether officers have clues
which will lead to the apprehension of the party or parties
who made away with Tiger is not known.

***posted for genealogical purposes only; no relation***

Hello,
I am a great, great, great grandchild to Moty Tiger. I know where the Tiger family plot is and I am currently working on maintaning the site. It was very neglected and lost on the edge of the forest. I contacted the Muscogee Creek Nation and notified them of the location. Unfortunatly there department does not have time to maintain the gravesites. Even for a former chief. I have the names of all other family members buried in the plot. If anyone has any questions or perhaps any information for me please do not hesitate.

Kathryn. I hope this reaches you. I became interested in Dirtthrower Tiger, Captain, Company I in the 2nd Indian Home Guard regiment, while researching a couple of Cherokee members of the regiment (Tadpole and Askwater). I see you are Cherokee from your "Trottingwolf" name. Tiger is a distinctly Creek or Seminole surname. Of course there was intermarriage between the tribes and browsing the roster of Co. I, 2nd IHG I see a mixture of Cherokee and Creek/Seminole surnames. It was not typical to have tribes mixed in the companies due in part to the language difference. I'm interested in any insight you may have on Dirtthrower Tiger and his company.

Ken Martin

Here's a suggestion that helped me find Native American ancestors. Go to www.AccessGenealogy.com. They have free Native American records you can search. You might want to check the "Final Rolls Database." This is where I found the Dawes Enrollment Records which give Card # and Roll # of every person in household registered on the Final Rolls. From there you can order a copy of the original Card your ancestors signed up on and also will show land records if you so choose to order. I bought about 15 jackets (complete file with land records for $20). Enter a name on the form, pick a Tribe from the drop down menu and click search. Hope this helps you a little. My ancestors were "Mixed Yuchi" and "Creek" and some ancestors were originally enrolled on Cherokee Rolls and changed to the Creek Rolls when the Government made all Tribes enroll.
Annmarie
Southampton, Massachusetts

Since my original posting, I now realize Jeff Tiger IS NOT AN ANCESTOR OF MINE. It turns out there were 2 Matilda Jackson's. My great great grandmother, Matilda was Matilda Root-Jackson-Barr. I do have the Dawes Enrollment Packet for this "Jeff Tiger." I bought the packet from the National Archives in Fort Worth, Texas back in 2004 for $20. It's a copy of all this other Matilda (Tiger)Jackson & Jeff Tiger's files.
Annmarie

Re: Motey Tiger

I have read in books that in the early years of the white man in this country, the mountain lion was called "tiger".

The Creek Indians belonged to the town of their mother--my greatgrandfather, Moty Tiger, belonged to his mother's town, Tuckabatchee--his father's town was Thlopthlocco. Moty's father's name was Tulsa Fixico and his mother's name was Louisa Canard (Kennard). In our family, the name of Tiger began with Moty and his siblings. The name Canard began when a Scotsman, Kinnaird, came to America and married into the Creek tribe. The name Kinnaird has been spelled eight different ways--Kinnaird, Kinnard, Kennard, Kenard, Kanard, Canard, etc.--I suppose according to how the person writing it down knew how to spell.

Tulsa married a second time to a woman, Chamela, who already had several children. Tulsa and Chamela then had a son, Lumyer, and three daughters, Fickhumkee (called Millie), Hunna (Hannah), and Sophia. They were all given the last name of Tiger.

In a newspaper article during Moty's time it was told that he was originally named Homv Tikv, which meant first to cross. He was named after an ancestor on the Kennard side who performed a brave deed. His name was later changed to Moty Tiger--Moty after Moty Kennard and "Tiger" perhaps because that is how "Tikv" sounded or who knows.

A biographical sketch written about him said that he was the third son of Tulsa Fixico; however, I've never learned who the first two brothers were or how long they lived.

One Tiger family told us that they got their name when the children were lined up in school and said "hereafter your name is ______ and your name is ___________.

Also when Indians were enrolled the Indian names were written down according to how the person writing it knew how to spell or how it sounded to them. For example, there were two related families with the same Indian name and one ended up having their name spelled Ireland and the other one Island.

In addition to their towns, the Creeks also had clan names. One clan name was Tiger. Moty Tiger married Hettie Tiger and her clan was Alligator so my grandfather, George Washington Tiger, was from the Alligator clan, the same as his mother. George's second wife, my grandmother, was Susan Hampton. Her mother was a full-blood Creek Indian woman named Susie Nitie. She died when Susan was around a week old and her father died when she was 7 or 9. Judge Napoleon Bonapart Moore was her guardian and he sent her away to school so she never learned much about her mother. Therefore, I do not know her clan name.

So you can see the name could have started several ways for different families.

Etymology of TIGER

I came across a name on the Internet---Harriet MACHTIGER---and I wonder if that is the source of the surname TIGER.

I am not related to anyone named TIGER, but have been curious about the change of name for many years.

Reg Niles
RegNMINiles#cs.com

I believe Jack birth name is John Tiger born to William Tiger and della Defreese. I have "Jack and Dellas Marriage record with both of their family names on it. I also have a photo of Jacks grandmother Tanya ann Mann. At one time i saw a photo of Willam at the Suffern Librari " Ina book" local history section. I cannot for the life of me find it again and I did not photocopy it. I do have a photo of Jack Tiger when he was young with his wife sis castelonia, one when hes older in a hat, and a photo of Della Defreeese Tiger who is also a ggg Aunt. She is the daughter of John Defreese and Margaret Mann, They are buried at the Ramapo Reformed church Island rd mahwah Nj. I'm also the founder of the Ramapough Family Genealogical and Historical Society. I would love to see any photo any one has on the family and I will certainly share mine.
Judy, I believe we are related. That date is correct with my information. Jacob Sr. did live in Lebanon, NJ in 1830 in his 90's per census report. My great great grandfather was Asa Tiger and Jacob was his grandfather. For me that would be great.....Send me an email and let me know more about your side.
Thanks,
Martha Tiger

Brian don't feel too bad, there are many Tiger's trying to find and put the pieces together. From my own research the Tiger family does indeed have Cherokee, Creek and Seminole Indian bloodlines. My greatgrandmother was a Cherokee. My best suggestion is to start from your parents and work backwards, which is what I've had to do. Both of my parents have died, which made it even harder. Don't give up. Most Tiger's originated from NJ, NY and PA, then headed west. Good luck
