Re: Motey Tiger

I have read in books that in the early years of the white man in this country, the mountain lion was called "tiger".

The Creek Indians belonged to the town of their mother--my greatgrandfather, Moty Tiger, belonged to his mother's town, Tuckabatchee--his father's town was Thlopthlocco. Moty's father's name was Tulsa Fixico and his mother's name was Louisa Canard (Kennard). In our family, the name of Tiger began with Moty and his siblings. The name Canard began when a Scotsman, Kinnaird, came to America and married into the Creek tribe. The name Kinnaird has been spelled eight different ways--Kinnaird, Kinnard, Kennard, Kenard, Kanard, Canard, etc.--I suppose according to how the person writing it down knew how to spell.

Tulsa married a second time to a woman, Chamela, who already had several children. Tulsa and Chamela then had a son, Lumyer, and three daughters, Fickhumkee (called Millie), Hunna (Hannah), and Sophia. They were all given the last name of Tiger.

In a newspaper article during Moty's time it was told that he was originally named Homv Tikv, which meant first to cross. He was named after an ancestor on the Kennard side who performed a brave deed. His name was later changed to Moty Tiger--Moty after Moty Kennard and "Tiger" perhaps because that is how "Tikv" sounded or who knows.

A biographical sketch written about him said that he was the third son of Tulsa Fixico; however, I've never learned who the first two brothers were or how long they lived.

One Tiger family told us that they got their name when the children were lined up in school and said "hereafter your name is ______ and your name is ___________.

Also when Indians were enrolled the Indian names were written down according to how the person writing it knew how to spell or how it sounded to them. For example, there were two related families with the same Indian name and one ended up having their name spelled Ireland and the other one Island.

In addition to their towns, the Creeks also had clan names. One clan name was Tiger. Moty Tiger married Hettie Tiger and her clan was Alligator so my grandfather, George Washington Tiger, was from the Alligator clan, the same as his mother. George's second wife, my grandmother, was Susan Hampton. Her mother was a full-blood Creek Indian woman named Susie Nitie. She died when Susan was around a week old and her father died when she was 7 or 9. Judge Napoleon Bonapart Moore was her guardian and he sent her away to school so she never learned much about her mother. Therefore, I do not know her clan name.

So you can see the name could have started several ways for different families.

I believe Jack birth name is John Tiger born to William Tiger and della Defreese. I have "Jack and Dellas Marriage record with both of their family names on it. I also have a photo of Jacks grandmother Tanya ann Mann. At one time i saw a photo of Willam at the Suffern Librari " Ina book" local history section. I cannot for the life of me find it again and I did not photocopy it. I do have a photo of Jack Tiger when he was young with his wife sis castelonia, one when hes older in a hat, and a photo of Della Defreeese Tiger who is also a ggg Aunt. She is the daughter of John Defreese and Margaret Mann, They are buried at the Ramapo Reformed church Island rd mahwah Nj. I'm also the founder of the Ramapough Family Genealogical and Historical Society. I would love to see any photo any one has on the family and I will certainly share mine.
Brian don't feel too bad, there are many Tiger's trying to find and put the pieces together. From my own research the Tiger family does indeed have Cherokee, Creek and Seminole Indian bloodlines. My greatgrandmother was a Cherokee. My best suggestion is to start from your parents and work backwards, which is what I've had to do. Both of my parents have died, which made it even harder. Don't give up. Most Tiger's originated from NJ, NY and PA, then headed west. Good luck

From OK she and others made it to FL. She had a daughter named Lucy, who died at age of 107 in 1976. If anyone has any information on either Lucy I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.
Hi Bobbie
I'm receiving your email now. I had exceeded my limit from being at mom's for 2 days and had to delete junk mail first to get new mail.
I have the Dawes Roll Packet #741 for the following:
#2443 - Matilda Jackson
#2444 - Emma Barr
#2445 - Laura Barr
Matilda Jackson -age 42- father/Root mother/Alice Oatkey
Emma Barr - age 19 - father/J.C. Barr a non-citizen mother/Matilda Jackson
Laura Barr - age 14 mother/Matilda Jackson father/J.C. Barr

It says #2443 Matilda Jackson is on 1890 roll as Matilda Tiger and also on Coweta Pay Roll of 1898. #2444 Emma Barr is wife of #1 on Creek Card #1987 which I don't have. I have Creek Card #1981 for Mitchell Wadsworth, Sr.

On the sworn testimony page J.C. Barr says Matilda Jackson beloged to the town of Broken Arrow He represented Emma, my grandmother and her sisters as Power of Attorney. The papers are dated August 28, 1899.
On the land exemptions page dated April 14, 1930 it lists Matilda Jackson now Barr as living in Wagoner.

Do you know why Matilda Jackson is listed on 1890 roll as Matilda Tiger?

These are all copies of the orininal records sent to me by the National Archives in Fort Worth, Texas.

I have the following Dawes Records:
Card #NB242 Mary Wadsworth b. 2-13-1903 d. 4-20-1924 plus another baby of Emma Bar born dead on 12-23-1904.
Card #NB425 for William Leo Cunningham, Laura's son.
Card #2977 for Samuel Childers age 32 and died 2-25-1901.
Card #NB1119 for Effie Childers born 12-6-1904 whose father was Chisso Childers and mother was Millie Childers.
Card #740 for Hattie Childers age 22 and on 1890 roll as Hettie Barr. father J.C Barr & mother Matilda Jackson and roll #2442 Effie was Hatties' daughter and was 4 mos. at the time.
Card #3297 for James S. Vann from Cherokee and Mary Wadsworth of Coweta who might be a gr. gr. gr. of my grandmother Mary Wadsworth.
Card #3462 for Laura Nave age 1-1/2 whose father was John C. Nave a non-citizen & mother as Alice Nave (Alice Branchcomb).
Card #1981 for Mitchell Wadsworth, Jr. age 33 whose father was Mitchell Wadsworth, Sr. & mother was Kate Holden. #6195 Mitchell Wadsworth, Jr. is on Creek Card #243 as husband of #2 which I don't have.
Card #585 lists roll #1896 Kate Holden.
Card #914 lists #2956 Jennie Root age 5 with father Thomas Root & mother as Ida Hill. Jennie is listed on 1895 payroll as Fannie Roots.
roll #2959 as Martha May Root age 2 with father as Thomas Root & mother as Ida Hill. License and certificate of marriage of Thomas Root and Ida May McGraw (user Ida Hill) exhibited letter of Guardianship for both of the above children issued to Ida Hill by the U.S. Court Northern District Sept. 22, 1899.

On Card #585 from Choska, I.T. June 29, 1899 lists Thomas Holden, roll #1895 as father Thomas Holden a non-citizen and mother as Becky (no maiden name listed) from town of Euchee. Roll #1896 as Kate Holden wife age 40 on 1890 Coweta Town Census page 98. Her father is Thomas Atkins of Coweta and her mother as Mollie Tiger of Coweta.
Thomas Holden, Jr. on Euchee census roll of 1895. Kate Holden died on January 9, 1909 at age 50 or 60 (conflicting ages listed in dawes papers) in Coweta.
Roll #6195 for Mitchell Wadsworth, Jr., age 50 as of Jan. 22, 1919 a 1/2 Creek from Sapulpa. Mitchell Wadsworth, Sr. died in 1873 and not enrolled.
Thomas Holden died April 16, 1901.

Because the records show Matilda Jackson was listed on 1890 roll as Matilda Tiger I was wondering if she could have been married the Indian Way to a Tiger without a marriage license. What do you think?

email me at BlondiNativeAme3@Netscape.net
Maybe you can explain Creek Card #741 to me. Do you have this record? I could copy and mail to you if you want and also the record for Matilda Tiger, roll #6099.
Annmarie

Hi Bobbie

I have the right Matilda Jackson but I was sent the records from Matilda Jackson, roll #6099 instead of roll #2443. My mistake was I had combined the two Matilda's as one person

My grandmother was Mary Wadsworth; gr. grandmother was Emma Barr; gr. gr. grandmother was Matilda Jackson.

I have a letter from my grandmother Mary, which, she wrote from Aunt Alice Nave's home on July 3, 1923 to Sam W. Brown, Jr and his wife Mattie May Payne who raised her after Emma Barr died sometime after the birth of a stillborn child on Dec. 23, 1904. I also have an old black & white picture of Nora Nichols with her mother Alice Nave-Branchcomb taken in front of Frankhoma Pottery Place. Nora used to write to my mother over the years.

My maternal gr. gr. grandmother was Matilda Jackson married to the Jackson you mentioned, and I have one old picture of her holding my grandmother, Mary Wadsworth when Mary was a baby. The back of the picture says: Mary Wadsworth and Tealdy (Matilda Jackson). Matilda was very pretty and my grandmother Mary looks to be about 6-12 mos. old. Nora sent my mother a lot of old black & white pictures years ago of Mary & Matilda, Sam & Mattie May Payne and Juanita Brown-Tiger who was my mother's paternal aunt as Juanita's brother, Samuel Wayne Brown, then age 17 got my grandmother, Mary pregnant at the age of 21. I have all the letters from Sam Wayne Brown, my mother's father explaining all this to my mother. Sam Brown, Jr. & his wife raised my grandmother as a child and when my grandmother got pregnant Juanita talked her into marrying Martin McAlpine who then took my mother away from the Brown family and had his mother Annie McAlpine bring her to Holyoke, Massachusetts to raise because Martin wanted ALL Mary's money and land which he got except for the last piece his mother had my mother sign away 6 mos. after she turned 21.

I have all the letters to my mother from Nora Nichols and Samuel Wayne Brown as Nora said she didn't know what happened to my mother after Mary Wadsworth died. We are related through Emma Barr's sister which is Aunt Alice Nave-Branchcomb. I didn't know Mitchell Wadsworth, Jr. married again shortly after Emma Barr died until I read one of Nora Nichols letters to my mother.

My daughter and I have been cleaning out boxes and cartons of Oklahoma Family History which my mother now age 80 had stuffed away as mom was in denial over all her relatives because growing up she was never told of her Oklahoma relatives, wasn't allowed to ask about them but was just told she was Indian.
It was cousin Nora that found my mother and gave Samuel Wayne Brown her address and they all started corresponding again. My mother knew nothing of her past and now cries thinking of all the years that she wasted when she could have found her family sooner when they were still alive. By the time Nora found my mother she was 19 and just starting college.
My parents stayed with Nora the week of July 1, 1972 when Nora said she had just burried her husband. By going from the dates on Nora's letters she would have been age 72 in July 1972. I can't find the letter she told my mother her birthday. Nora's letters at the time were coming from: R.E. Nichols, R2 Box 128 in Bristow, Oklahoma.
Over the years Nora sent a lot of family history letters and pictures which my mother has all over the place. We still haven't gone into the ton of boxes in her cellar yet. I can't use my scanner as it isn't working but I can get pictures copied or download pictures to a disk to save.

E-mail me @BlondiNativeAme3@Netscape.net and if you want to include your address, I can send you copies of all the letters to my mother from Nora through the years as Dorothy Brown, my mother's paternal aunt said in a letter that Nora was the keeper of the family history which is the role I now have for my mother.
Hope to hear from you.
Annmarie

Hi my name is Annmarie. I've been doing my mother's genealogy for almost 4 years now. I have the Dawes Enrollment Card for my great great grandmother, Matilda Jackson. On her enrollment card it states she was married to a Jeff Tiger. This was her first husband. They were married for only one year the Indian Way and had no children. Maybe you would know how she fits into the Tiger family. I also have another Tiger in the family on my mother's maternal side, her name was Mollie Tiger. She was the wife of Thomas Atkins and the mother of Kate Holden from Coweta.
Matilda Jackson is on the 1890 Roll as Matilda Tiger and is also on the Coweta Pay Rolll of 1898. Her daughterrs were Emma Barr (age 19 my great grandmother) and Laura Barr age 14. Matilda Jackson's father was ? Root and her mother was Alice Oatkey all of Coweta. Matilda Jackson also married a J.C. Barr, a non-citizen who was an attorney. Emma Barr married Mitchell Wadsworth and they had my grandmother, Mary Wadsworth on Feb. 13, 1903 and another baby was born on Dec. 23, 1904 (stillborn). Mary Wadsworth and Chief Samuel W. Brown, Jr. had my mother Anna Josephine McAlpine born March 16, 1924. My grandmother was already pregnant by Chief Samuel W. Brown, Jr. when she eloped with and married Martin McAlpine an Irish non-citizen from Holyoke, Massachusetts who came to America during the great potato famine. I also found on Creek Card #914 Thomas Root who married Ida Hill a non-citizen and became guardian to Jennie Root (on 1895 Pay Roll as Fannie Roots) age 5 and Martha May Root age 2. They were from the town of Big Springs. License and certificate of marriage of Thomas Root and Ida May McGraw (Ida Hill), on Sept. 22, 1899. Jennie Root on Big Spring Census roll of 1895.

Roll #6099 Matilda Tiger age 40 Full blood creek from the town of Coweta. She is on 1890 roll as Tilda Chully and also on the Coweta Town census of 1895.
Matilda's father was Sim-me-see from Broken Arrow and her mother was Lo-sutch-ey from the town of Coweta.
I have 22 Dawes Enrollment Cards for my family from the National Archives in Forth Worth, Texas. It cost $20 per jacket (enrollmet card and land records). I also found a good site by lancehall who has ALL the "Dawes Enrollment Card #'s and people online. I typed in Dawes Enrollment Cards then clicked on the link for "Enrollment Cards," by lancehall at https://www.quickbase.com. This is an excellent compilation of all the Dawes Enrollment cards.
You can E-mail me at BlondiNativeAme3@Netscape.net. Hope this information will give you some help.
Ms. Annmarie J. Christian FAX: (413)734-2266

Hi Martha
I've now got my Public Family Tree on Ancestry.com. I've been working on it since 2000.
I discovered there were two Matilda Tigers in the same area of Oklahoma at the same time. Since my post I found a cousin who told me my Matilda was, Matilda Root-Tiger-Barr-Jackson. She was married to a Jeff Tiger for a year and had no children with him.
Thanks
Annmarie
