George Rosales Tilford

Looking for more info on George Rosales Tilford, b. 18 Apr 1843 in Ohio, died June 1921, where unknown. He married Elivra Wood, b 30 Apr 1849,in Indiana. They had 10 children. I have quite a bit of information on their family but I am trying to fill in spots and trace the Tilford line back to England. George R.'s father was John Winslow Tilford,b. 15 May 1796, in England (I think) Mother Lucy Myers b. 5 Nov 1808 with two stories, one born in Maryland, and also that she was a Pennsylvania German. John and Lucy had 5 children that I know of. They are Emily,Samuel H.,George R.*,William Dumas, and Winslow Henry. Any additional info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Greg

I am doing some research for Adele Tilford here in the UK. She is the great granddaughter of Joseph Henry Tilford, b.1895, Stapleford and younger brother of your Ernest Butcher Tilford.
Robert TILFORD, Mary BARKLEY, George GORE, Cyrill Joseph CAMPBELL

Looking for parents, siblings, and ancestors of Mary BARKLEY:
According to her death and burial records she was born December 15, 1854 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. The oldest record I’ve found for her is the 1870 U.S. Census, City of Detroit; the household includes Robert TILFORD, age 58, born Scotland; Elizabeth TILFORD, age 46, born New York; Mary BARKLEY, age 15, born Michigan; and John BARKLEY, age 13, born Michigan. I suspect that Elizabeth TILFORD is the mother of Mary and John BARKLEY. Mary BARKLEY married first George GORE, 3 July 1872 in Detroit, Wayne County Michigan; witnesses Robert and Elizabeth TILFORD. George GORE was born ca. 1834 in New York. I have no record of how this marriage ended. Mary BARKLEY married second Cyrill Joseph CAMPBELL, 10 July 1878. She died 27 June 1923 in Detroit.
Any help appreciated—will share what information I have.

Gail Campbell Schulte
George S. Tilford, 1790--1868, Cayuga Co., NY

Additional information about the following Tilfords would be appreciated.

George S. Tilford (1790–1868) lived most, if not all, his life in Cayuga Co., NY. He was there in the 1850 and 1860 U.S. censuses and was probably the same George Tilford listed in the 1820–40 U.S. censuses in Sterling twp, Cayuga Co., NY. His first wife, Isabella (–1828) was the mother of James S. Tilford and (at least) two others. His second wife was Nancy P.

The son James S. Tilford (1811–1871) was listed in the 1850–70 U.S. censuses for Sterling twp, Cayuga Co., NY. He and wife, Nancy (–1880) parented 8 (apparently) children: Mary Patty (1840–1847), Martha A. (–1918), Sarah Jane (1844–), James S. (1846–), Nancy (1847–1847), Margaret Ann (1848–1922), George S. (1851–), and William C. (1854–).

Daughter Martha A. Tilford married Jacob Timerson ca. 1864. Daughter Margaret Ann Tilford married George Madison Farnham (1841–1922) in 1871 (his antecedents and some descendants are extensively documented in several published works).

Re: Margaret Tilford

Stan:

Take a look at www.Myindianahome.net
In the list of graves for Slippery Point Cemetery, Republican Twp, Jefferson County you will find:
Sanderson, Mary E., wife of Thomas, Sept. 5, 1814 - Sept. 2, 1880

Then see “Wills & Probates,” Mollie Sanderson is listed as an heir of Preston Tilford.

Then see “Marriages 1861-1864”: Thomas Sanderson married Mary E. Tilford.

The 1880 Census for Republican Township shows Dr. Thomas Sanderson, physician, and wife Mary E. living with a niece named McDonald.

I also show Dr. Thomas Sanderson, Jr. b. July 30, 1837, d. June 18, 1905 buried next to Martha J. Sanderson b. July 29, 1841, no death date given. My notes show this couple buried in Springdale Cemetery, Madison, Indiana. I don’t know who the Thomas was who is buried in the Monroe Presbyterian Cemetery.

I’m assuming Dr. Sanderson remarried after the death of Mary, who apparently wished ot be buried with the Tilfords.
I also note that the death date for Mary, in Slippery Point Cemetery, is an obvious error, probably on the part of the transcriber: 1814 should have read 1844, the year of Mary’s birth – attested by her age in the 1860 Republican Twp census

If you want, I can look at my Tilford document. I have information on Mary E. Tilford’s ancestry back as far as William Tilford, a Revolutionary War Soldier and patriarch of this whole line.

Hope this is helpful, but recognize that after 5 years, you may already have found answers to your questions.

Rhonda: By this time, you may already know more than I do, but I have a record of two marriages in Ohio County between Tilfords and Haynes. These both came from:

MARRIAGES: 1795 - 1905, Ohio County, Kentucky,
http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ky/ohio/vitals/marriage...:

TILFORD, LUCY
HAYNES, CHARLES 1-1-1836
ANCIL HALL WALKER DANIELS

Walker Daniels was apparently the bondsman, and Ancil Hall is listed in the column labeled “Married By.”

I found one Lucy Haines [sic] in the 1880 Census, born in Kentucky in 1815, widowed, living in her son’s
Household in Macoupin County, Illinois. She’s the only candidate I could find and I know that’s not much of a clue. I was unable to find any unambiguous trace of Charles Haynes.

TILFORD, JAMES Y.
HAYNES, SARAH 3-21-1843

In the 1880 Census, I found the family of James Y. and Sally Tilford living in Caneyville, Grayson County,
Kentucky, with 5 children and 3 adult males labeled “Other.”

I found a couple of LDS postings that give James’ middle name as Yandell. As is so often the case,
some of the information doesn’t jibe with other data, but they show him as b. 5 May 1820 d. 12 Feb 1899.
The census shows him born in TN, but LDS claims Alabama. Kentucky Death Records show no Tilford who died in 1889.

As for Sarah Haynes Tilford, LDS claims she was born in 1822, which jibes with the census.

Bob
Seeking information about Joseph M. Tilford b. abt 1844 who married Marietta Surface of Johnson County, Indiana. There are many references to him in the Index to the Christian Record, from which we know that he died in 1875, 4 years after his marriage. He is also listed as one of the ministers of Mt. Carmel Christian Church, organized in 1870 in Nineveh Township, Johnson County. Joseph and Marietta had two children, Eva May b. abt 1873, and Everett b. abt 1875. Could Joseph M. Tilford have been the son of Jefferson and Nancy Tilford of Clark Co, IN?

Samuel Tilford, Clark Co Indiana: Silver Creek Church

Seeking information about Samuel Tilford of Clark County, Indiana. His name appears in a list of members of “old Silver Creek Church” along with that of Absalom Littell. Samuel apparently joined between 1816 and 1825. A history of the Littell family states that Samuel was the second husband of Absalom Littell’s daughter, Anna, whose name appears along with Samuel’s as Charter Members of the Sellersburg Church of Christ, established July 1832. I find no other trace of Samuel or Anna. (The Samuel Tilford of Jefferson Co listed in the Indiana Census for 1820 is a different person.)

Nabb Presbyterian Church & Tilfords

Seeking information about Tilfords mentioned as charter members of Nabb Presbyterian Church in Scott/Clark Co IN in 1885: Anna Belle Tilford, John Tilford, Mary Tilford, William L. Tilford.
Others are mentioned elsewhere in the “History of Nabb Presbyterian Church” http://www.rootsweb.com/~inscott/NabbPres.html:
Emmett Tilford, Millie Hancock Tilford (from Pleasant Ridge Methodist Church), William D. Tilford, and one name that may be incorrectly transcribed: Pearl Watt Tilford Buxton. The 1880 Census for Fox Township, Jasper Co, IL shows John S. Tilford 32, wife Eliza J. 31, son William L. 8 mos., Emett [sic] 6, Neola B 4 and Bertha V. 3. In 1905, Emmett Tilford was elected both an elder and a trustee. Does anyone have any idea which John S. Tilford this might be?

Hi Robin,

Thanks for your reply. James K. Polk Tilford was my great great grandfather. I am assuming he was named after President Polk, which would probably make his full name James Knox Polk Tilford. I listed his children in my other message. If you need dates for them, I have most of them. There is an interesting point which I noticed concerning Nicolas Calvin Tilford. In the 1850 Census it says that he was born in Alabama which doesn't exactly go along with his being born in Short Creek. I found some information on the Mormon web-site, but I also believe that some of it is incorrect. Please feel free to e-mail me. Where do you fall into the family tree? I look forward to corresponding with you. I really do appreciate your response.

Carol Ann

Tilfords and Hayes in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama

I am tracing my father's mother's line. So far I have been able to trace back to my ggg grandfather Nicolas Calvin Tilford from Grayson County, Kentucky. He was a physician. I have found him on both the 1850 and 1860 Grayson County Census. His wife was Julia Ann McGowen, I believe. My gg
grandfather was James K.P. Tilford. I located him on the Kentucky 1910 Miracode index. On the censuses there seems to be disagreement about his initials. In 1850 he is listed as James R.P. Tilford. In 1860 he is listed as J.T.E.P. Tilford. My great grandmother was his daughter Albina Tilford and her daughter was Virdie Ree, my grandmother. I remember my great aunt telling me about her great grandfather being a physician from Grayson County. All of my relatives on that side of the family have passed away and I am just now beginning to trace that side of the family. If anyone has any information on this family I would be most grateful. My great grandfather was William Turl Hayes. He and Albina had several children.
Dalsie M.
Virdie Ree
Dewey
Calvernia
Robert Hayden
James Bryan
Elton
Edgar Earl Hayes

Tilford

Have been looking for origin and then where she died...Cynthia Tilford married Abil Rainey King on Nov. 20th, 1837 in Clay Co. Mo. Had one daughter Martha Jane King. He is supposed to have died in 1847...where, we don't know...he was son of John Rebecca Rainey King...Rebecca is buried in Daily Cem near Savannah, Mo. We think Cynthia Tilson(king) married next William Tilson in Andrew Co, MO. in Dec. 1850. Martha Jane King married Rufus Whitsell in Clinton co. in 1866..she was born in 1844. Anyway Cynthia disappears..think there might have been a sister Jesse King. Anyone have any info?? Ann
