Re: Tillapaugh Family -- Wayne, Oswego & Oneida Counties, NY

From what I've seen on the U.S. Census records, Reuben Tillapaugh did not have any children with Nora. Frederick, Myrtle and Florence were born with his first wife, Harriet. Of course, I can't be certain of this.

In looking at some obituaries of Reuben's siblings, I noticed some controversial birthdates. One article lists Dr. Frederick Smith Tillapaugh, Jr. being born on February 2, 1859 and another article stating that his brother Benjamin Levi Tillapaugh was born on December 1, 1858. I don't see how that could be possible. Some census records show Benjamin being born in 1861 or 1862 while a couple later ones say 1858. Anyway, I'm sure that it is one of a number of issues.

It seems that Frederick Smith Tillapaugh, Sr. and Nancy Lester had at least 13 children...maybe more. Dr. James Judson "J.J." was the oldest, and then from there were William Henry, Dr. Frederick Smith, Jr., Benjamin Levi, Harriet Adelia, Lydia Minerva "Elizabeth," Betsy, Reuben Evart, Diana, Maude, Rutherford, Rufus H. and Morgan B. Morgan is shown as being born in 1883 on a couple census reports and another in 1871. So many questions I see.

Besides all that, I'm still trying to find out if all these are actually children of Fred and Nancy. Hopefully, I can find out more soon.

My father's name was George Gendall Tillapaugh of Cooperstown, NY His father was Revo Tillapaugh. He married Anna G. Gendall and they lived in Schenevus, NY. Tillapaughs are descendants of William Tell of Switzerland. My father worked on a geneology book. The last publication was in 1979. The title of the book is The Dillenbachs of America 1710-1935 with a second book that covers 1935-1979. The Mohawk Valley Printing Company of Herkimer, NY may be able to tell you if there are any copies available. The information in these books is extensive. The original family farm is located in Carlisle, NY and still owned by Tillapaughs.
David G. Tillapaugh Richfield Springs, NY

Reuben Tillapaugh was my great grandmother Betsy's brother. The Tillapaugh's seemed to be a pretty elusive family, it's hard to find them even on census records. Have lots more info on the Tillapaughs that I would be happy to share. Please e-mail me directly if you would like. Thanks.

Hi LuAnn,

I have a few maternal Tillapaughs listed in my family tree from Michigan. My grandmother on my mothers side of the family was a Tillapaugh. My grandmother claims that they originated from the Mohawk valley in New York state. Not being from there I have no idea what counties that may involve but I have dates back to 1839 if you would have any interest. My second great grandfather , David N Tillapaugh must have lived in Ohio at one time because he was in the 144th Ohio Infantry during the Civil War, He was born in 1839 and was married to an Anna Galliger. Pleas feel free to e-mail me at jackmac01@email.msn,com
